Abstract:
In one of her many poetic motivation descriptions included in her literary works and comments, Amelia Rosselli points to tough-life experience as a factor influencing her artistic creativity. The Italian twentieth-century poet repeatedly emphasizes a direct impact of mental well-being as the driving force of her writing process. A gloomy flashback, hand in hand with a concept, experience, and fantasy, influence the expression of her pieces and structures the literary space. A minor overtoned reference to the grievous reality of Fascist Italy connected with the murder-for-hire of family members, sudden and premature death of her sweetheart and brother, mental illness in the context of the DNA memory, and, finally, the promise of suicide had all impacted noticeably upon the verses of her poems. Another thing worth mentioning is the issue of stress and hardships lived through by Amelia Rosselli’s mother and her immediate relatives just prior to the poet’s birth. According to the latest developments in medicine and cognitive sciences, any psychical damage influences bodily and mental functioning of persons not only directly affected by them, but also their descendants. The linguistic terms applied in the pieces of the Italian poet provoke a discussion of the phenomenon of post-memory. The term, which was proposed by Marianne Hirsch to refer to collective trauma inheritance, has been recently broadened by psychologists to encompass individual memory as well. The fragments written in four language codes (Italian, French, English, and music notation) offer hints to be used in the psycho-emotional analysis of the poet. Additionally, scrutinizing Amelia Rosselli’s nostalgic lyrical pieces, we can discern, by referring to psychological sciences, how the composition-making can constitute an auto-psychotherapy procedure. In terms of interdisciplinarity, the experience of melancholy and nostalgia in Amelia Rosselli’s artistic creativity covers the psychological, social, historical, cultural, political, and artistic areas.

L’oggetto di questo studio è la poesia: uno studio psicoanalitico del linguaggio poetico, che va ad indagare gli impulsi inconsci e le motilità mancate racchiuse all’interno del testo. Un linguaggio complesso e portatore di lapsus, di atti mancati, un linguaggio poetico che merita di essere analizzato in rapporto alla psicoanalisi: il linguaggio di Amelia Rosselli e Alda Merini, che furono internate in manicomio, e che attraverso la loro poesia, hanno sublimato la loro stessa vita. Attraverso i metodi di Freud, di Jung, e in particolar modo di Julia Kristeva, saranno analizzate alcune liriche delle poetesse utilizzando quattro metodi di analisi: morfofonemica, sintattica, pronominale, contestuale. L’Io poetico si svela attraverso i suoni, gli impulsi vengono rivelati nei sintagmi nominali e verbali e nella loro articolazione, la scissione della personalità si divide tra un io, un tu e infiniti egli, e l’intertestualità rivela l’ampiezza della cultura delle autrici, l’interiorizzazione del passato storico e letterario e la nobilitazione della realtà a opera poetica.

Questo lavoro di tesi si propone un unico, semplice obiettivo, che tuttavia soltanto all’apparenza può darsi come banale e scontato. Le pagine che seguono sono infatti un tentativo di lettura del testo svolto attraversando la raccolta che sta ai margini della produzione poetica di Amelia Rosselli: Sleep, libro dalla lunghissima gestazione, elaborato nell’arco di tredici anni, dal 1953 al 1966, e scritto in lingua inglese. Dedicarvi uno studio vuol dire frequentare dunque un campo di indagine ben specifico, relativo all’analisi e alla critica dell’opera rosselliana; al contempo, però, il libro è specchio di una ricerca poetica tanto profonda da aprire la riflessione del lettore a un discorso necessariamente più ampio, di natura poetologica. Infatti, da un lato, si tratta di un corpus testuale in cui si trovano condensati gli stessi motivi che permeano anche la poesia in lingua italiana, rispetto alla quale uno studio approfondito di Sleep si rivela quindi particolarmente significativo. Dall’altro lato, grazie alla rara capacità di Rosselli di porre i problemi fondamentali della poesia all’interno della poesia stessa1, la lettura di Sleep offre l’occasione di riflettere su alcune questioni essenziali riguardanti la scrittura poetica: il nodo che, nella parola, stringe tra loro suono e immagine; il rapporto tra pagina scritta e movimento del pensiero, quindi tra lingua ed esperienza; il funzionamento della memoria, intesa soprattutto come dinamica creativa, risonanza della tradizione nella lingua della poesia; il tentativo di raggiungere l’Altro, il lettore, che si dà come scintilla prima per la scrittura, per la nascita del testo e, infine, dello stesso io poetico; il cortocircuito tra cervello, cuore e ventre, tutti luoghi in cui si concepisce l’esperienza interiore che diventano, perciò, anche sede della gestazione creativa. Tutto questo converge in una poesia, quella di Sleep appunto e, in generale, dell’intera opera rosselliana, che, volendo farsi testimonianza e interrogazione dell’esistenza, si realizza anzitutto come ricerca, quindi come sperimentazione, estenuante e insonne: parafrasando uno dei primi scritti rosselliani, sono infatti la privazione del sonno e la sua attesa allucinata a provocare – evocare – il ritmo, la musica, le immagini della poesia. Abstract:
This thesis focuses on Intertexuality in the Poetry of Amelia Rosselli from Primi Scritti (1952-1963) to Variazioni belliche (1959-1961). The research is based on the annotated books of the author's personal library kept in the Fondo Rosselli of Viterbo and of her personal documents, letters and original typescripts of her works held in the Centro Manoscritti Autori Moderni e Contemporanei of the University of Pavia. Rosselli's annotations are studied for the first time and they have proved to be essential for the interpretation of her poetry. Rosselli's aspiration to Gesamtskunstwerk is reflected in the composition of her library which ranges from musicology, quantum physics, Gestalt psychology, history of art and philosophy. I explored the influence of these disciplines in her work adopting an interdisciplinary approach. In particular I concentrate on the influence that her studies in etnomusicology have had on the style of her poetry. The theoretical framework of Julia Kristeva and Gian Biagio Conte enable me to draw two main intertexual strategies in Rosselli's poetry: the intertexuality of harmonics, and parody. Rosselli's use of literary allusion is a very original one: it is based on her work as a musicologist, which she articulates in the essay La serie degli armonici. In this essay Rosselli studied natural harmonics in music. Allusions develop into an intertextual fugue creating a mîse en abyme effect. Another type of allusion is the parody in which the poetic I acting as the fool challenges the literary fathers of Tradition in order to find her own space in the canon. The study of intertextuality has also some important consequences on a literary hystoriographic perspective: I recognized in her poetry what Detloff called 'the persistence of Modernism'. Her work like the one of Anglo-American modernists is characterized by a form of resilience to trauma and loss. Like the literature of survivors, Rosselli's deals with the expression of inexpressible, the fragmentation of the poetic I, and the will of re-writing her own story to overcome trauma. The ultimate result is a political and ethical cry for social justice, symphathy and peace.

Nous voulons démontrer que le plurilinguisme n’est pas un procédé accessoire, mais une fonction majeure de la littérature. Pour ce faire, cette thèse étudie l’écriture de trois auteurs italiens plurilingues : Amelia Rosselli (1930-1996), Edoardo Sanguineti (1930-2010) et Patrizia Vicinelli (1943-1991). La première partie analyse le plurilinguisme littéraire d’un point de vue théorique, historique et formel. Après avoir défini les concepts essentiels, nous dressons une synthèse argumentée des études fondatrices sur ce sujet. Parallèlement, nous montrons comment le plurilinguisme se développe dans la deuxième moitié du XXe siècle. Enfin, nous dégageons les caractéristiques formelles récurrentes des textes plurilingues, du micro-texte au macro-texte, et proposons plusieurs typologies. De plus, nous soutenons que le plurilinguisme a un rôle crucial dans la pensée, les émotions et les images véhiculées par les textes littéraires. La deuxième partie explore trois caractéristiques majeures de cet imaginaire plurilingue : la subjectivité, la représentation de l’espace mondial et la conscience métalinguistique. Le plurilinguisme a enfin des conséquences globales sur les logiques de réception et de traduction, comme le montre la troisième partie. Plus généralement, le lecteur lui-même est toujours plongé dans une traduction potentielle. Après avoir examiné les questions théoriques que pose la traduction du plurilinguisme, nous critiquons différentes traductions de nos auteurs en plusieurs langues. Nous insistons sur les cas particuliers de l’autotraduction et de la traduction réalisée avec l’auteur<br>My aim is to demonstrate that multilingualism is not an incidental process, but a substantial function in literature. Therefore, this thesis studies the works of three italian multilingual authors: Amelia Rosselli (1930-1996), Edoardo Sanguineti (1930-2010) and Patrizia Vicinelli (1943-1991). The first part analyses literary multilingualism from a theoretical, historical and formal point of view. After defining essential concepts, I give a detailed overview of the founding studies on this topic. At the same time, I point out how multilingualism raises during the second half of the XXe century. Then I identify the main formal patterns of multilingual texts, from microtext to macrotext, and propose different typologies. Moreover I argue that multingualism plays a leading role in thoughts, emotions and images conveyed by literary texts. Thus the second part focuses on three major features of the multilingual imagination: the subjectivity, the representation of world space and the metalinguistic awareness. Multilingualism has finally a global impact on the reception and the translation of texts, which is the topic of the third part. The reader himself is always engaged in a potential translation. After investigating the general questions raised by the translation of multilingualism, I criticize different translations of our authors in several languages. I also emphasize the specific issue of self-translation and translation written with the author

Nous voulons démontrer l’importance du moment biographique et formatif d’Amelia Rosselli qui précède son écriture et le rôle de ses premiers écrits plurilingues qui représentent la préhistoire de sa trilogie italienne et d’autres œuvres de sa maturité littéraire. Pour ce faire, cette thèse étudie, dans ses deux premières parties, l’exil de la famille Rosselli, victime de la persécution politique pendant le ventennio fasciste et la proto-formation culturelle, franco-anglo-américaine, de la poétesse, entre musique, littérature et politique. Nous dressons une synthèse de l’influence du néoréalisme du poète Rocco Scotellaro et de l’ethnologue Ernesto de Martino. Dans la troisième partie, cette étude analyse, dans une perspective intertextuelle, les Primi Scritti de 1952 à 1963 et décrit l’idiome de la poétesse, caractérisé par l’alternance et le mélange, parfois dans le même texte, de l’italien, de l’anglais et du français. Parallèlement nous montrons comme le plurilinguisme d’Amelia Rosselli ne se limite pas à une simple triglossie. Son plurilinguisme englobe d’autres langues : le latin, l’italien et le français du moyen âge, l’anglais élisabéthain, la langue des analphabètes de la Basilicate, les formes populaires du Sud de l’Italie et de Rome. Nous soutenons l’importance des études anthropologiques et ethnomusicologiques qu’elle a suivies de 1952 à 1953 et nous montrons en quoi le livre-enquête Contadini del Sud du lucanien Rocco Scotellaro a été déterminant pour Amelia Rosselli, ainsi que d’autres textes, afin de décrire la richesse de sa préhistoire littéraire. Pendant l’analyse des textes des origines, nous dégageons la naissance de trois poétiques d’Amelia Rosselli, de l’espace, de l’éclipse du moi poétique et de la blessure qui se montrent interdépendantes, s’entrelacent et se développent au cours des années 60 et 70<br>We would like to show the importance of Amelia Rosselli’s formative and biographical moment that precedes her writing as well as the role of her first multilingual works that represent the prehistory of her Italian trilogy and of other works of her literary maturity. To do so, this thesis studies, in its first two sections, the exile of the Rosselli family, victim of political persecution throughout the fascist ventennio, as well as the poet’s Franco-English-American proto-formation, amongst music, literature and politics. We will draw up a synthesis of the neorealist influence of the poet Rocco Scotellaro and of the ethnologist Ernesto de Martino. In the third section, this study will analyse, in an inter-textual perspective, the Primi Scritti (1952-1963) and will describe the poet’s idiom, characterized by alternation and mixture, of Italian, French, and English, sometimes in the same text. In parallel we will show how Amelia Rosselli’s multilingualism is not limited to a simple triglossie. Her multilingualism includes other languages: Latin, Italian and French from the Middle Ages, Elizabethan English, the spoken language of the illiterate from Basilicata, plus popular forms of speech from the south of Italy and from Rome. We uphold the importance of the anthropological and ethno-musicological studies carried out by Amelia Rosselli from 1952 to 1953. We will also show how the book of investigation Contadini del Sud by the Lucanian Rocco Scotellero was determining for her, as well as other texts, to be able to describe the treasures of her literary prehistory. Throughout the analysis of the texts of the origins we will uncover the birth of Amelia Rosselli’s three poetics: that of space, of the eclipse of oneself, and that of the wound, together to be seen as interdependent, entwined, and that will further develop themselves during the 60’s and the 70’s

This chapter examines the influence of Petrarch on the poetry of Amelia Rosselli. It argues that Rosselli's poetry can be seen to reaffirm the enduring value of the Petrarchan legacy at the close of the second millennium and shows how Petrarchan discourse operates within her poetry as a veritable ghost in the machine. It suggests of Rosselli's three major books, Serie ospedaliera appears to be the one in which the dialogue with Petrarch is more explicitly and productively engaged.

This chapter focuses on Carlo and Nello Rosselli, witnesses of a religion of duty that was different from Croce's philosophical premises and political conclusions, yet identical to it in the central role played by the principle of moral liberty. They had been led to the religion of duty by their “uncle” Gaetano Salvemini. Although Salvemini was a fierce enemy of clericalism, superstition, bigotry, and the authoritarianism and conservatism of the Vatican, he defined himself as a religious man. Christ's teaching was, for Salvemini, the foundation of the moral faith that guided his life. Their mother, Amelia Pincherle Rosselli, was also was crucial to the moral and intellectual education of Carlo and Nello Rosselli. For her, they embraced a religiosity of devotion to the moral principle lived inwardly, to be practiced with absolute intransigence.

Abstract:
Latin America encompasses a vast territory between 12°30'N and 55°30'S latitude and between 29°W and 82°W longitude. This subcontinent has 13 countries with complex climatic conditions. Extremely humid weather is typical closer to the equator, while semiarid, arid, and desertic conditions prevail in the Bolivian and Chilean high plains. The wide variation in climatic conditions leads to distinct agricultural conditions across Latin America. For example, forests, equatorial fruits, and perennial vegetation exist throughout the Amazonian region. Farther from the equator, toward the Andes and at higher latitudes, there is a noticeable change in agricultural systems. There is a greater emphasis on growing cereal/grain crops in Argentina and Brazil. The countries that compose the Amazon River basin experience a higher amount of annual precipitation, and drought is not a characteristic phenomenon there, except during high-intensity El Niño years (Marengo et al., 2001). In contrast, drought is a regular event commonly observed in parts of Peru, Chile, Paraguay, Argentina (Scian and Donnari, 1996), Uruguay, and Brazil. The Atacama Desert in Chile is one of the most arid regions on the earth, where the average annual precipitation is as low as 0.8 mm in Arika or even 0.5 mm in other regions of this desert. Figure 12.2 provides a more detailed description on climatic conditions of Brazil. Although the average annual precipitation in the northeastern region is less than 300 mm, it exceeds 2500 mm in some other regions of Brazil (Grimm, 2003). Agricultural operations take place during the rainy season (March–October). The northeast region is drought prone, but the central, west, and southeast regions are traditionally grain-producing regions. In the northeast and central-west regions, water deficiency is higher, which seriously affects food production. Table 12.1 shows production losses in Brazil due to climate anomalies including droughts that occurred during 1978–1986 (Mota, 1979) and 1991–1994 (Rossetti, 2001). About 33% (about 50% in the northeast region) of these losses were attributed to droughts. Maize production also significantly declined due to drought that occurred during 1990–91, 1993–94, 1996–97, and 1997–98.
