Abstract:
This article examines the political activism of conservative civil society in postrevolutionary Mexico through the lens of American service clubs. It focuses on the case of the Rotary Club of Monterrey, which gathered the city's industrial elites and some of the most vocal opponents of the Mexican state, particularly the presidency of Lázaro Cárdenas (1934–40). Monterrey is significant because of its economic and political clout; by the 1930s, it was the powerhouse of heavy industry and in the 1940s a key center of support for the Partido Acción Nacional. After Monterrey Rotarians dissolved their club in 1936, following a disagreement with Rotary International's policy against political involvement, they regrouped and established throughout Mexico the only service club that blended pro-business goals with right-wing hispanidad ideology: the Club Sembradores de Amistad. This story illustrates how conservative civil society in Mexico adopted seemingly contradictory transnational influences (Catholic Hispanist thought and American service clubs) to challenge the postrevolutionary state in a less confrontational way.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Clinical practice and research are frequently seen as two worlds apart, in psychiatry as in the vast majority of medical specialties. In order to bridge the gap between them, economic founds and grants are required, not always easy to obtain. In this contribution we report the birth of the Association for Research in Psychiatry (ARPSY) and its main activities. ARPSY was born in May 2016 thanks to a research prize assigned to dr. Giorgio Mattei by the eight Rotary Clubs of the Province of Modena, Italy (Rotary Club Modena, Mirandola, Carpi, Sassuolo, Vignola Castelfranco Bazzano, Frignano, Modena L.A. Muratori, Castelvetro di Modena Terra dei Rangoni, that altogether make up the so-called “Ghirlandina Group”). Aim of the association is to promote mental health among students and trainees, mental health professionals, patients and their families, and among the general population by means of fund raising, in order to finance research projects, clinical interventions and educational activities.Disclosure of interestThe authors have not supplied their declaration of competing interest.

In this research, the spotlights are aimed on the historical years between 1959 and 1967, with the main purpose of showing the scenic arrangements of the installation, organization and performance of a Rotary Club in a geographical scenery that was in mutation phase. That territory, formerly denominated Promised Earth or Canaan of the Industry, was soon substituted by the nomenclature Steel Valley .The partners founders of that first Rotary Club conceived themselves as foreigners from the Canaan of the State of Minas that emanated "milk and honey". Native from another lands, they met each other and they were met in order to form a service club in the Nacional Valley of Redemption, but with intense institutional entails to an international corporation. Organized under the doctrine of the interest well understood, the associated agents, each one, with his composition and capital volume, of economic, cultural, social, symbolic or political nature, they allowed, through the mechanism of capital convertibility, to concentrate, in the regional community, a power, capable to produce real effects without apparent waste of energy. As a voluntary and oligarchical association, this service club was, in a way, a institutional vehicle, in the local sphere, of appropriation, incorporation, reproduction and diffusion of visions of world of the ideological corpus of International Rotary.

Abstract:

Its central purpose is to develop the understanding of bourgeois sociability. The thesis is divided in five parts dedicated respectively to the specificity of the object and difficulties that have been encountered, membership and characteristics of this population, sociability, relations between sociability and politics, and the philanthropic and international dimension of Rotarian actions. A service club is a voluntary association of individuals, professionals with a common goal. It is an area of civic and political socialization where its members implement citizenship. Rotary International is one of the largest service club in the world with 105 years of existence. It has been conducted a quantitative and qualitative research to verify the characteristics of a service club of Rotary International, Rotary Club São Paulo Avenida Paulista, which develops social projects in various areas relevant to society. It is presented the socio-economic relations of the associates and relationships that they lay in the formulation and implementation of social projects. The analysis of network and social capital is the pillar of support of the members for the existence of social relevance. It discusses the importance of partnerships in the implementation of projects. The donation system, that permeates the club, brings an understanding for the commitment of the volunteers involved. Through network analysis it has been verified the internal and external relationships of the club, as well as the movement of capital by reciprocity and the motivations of volunteers. The research has revealed that the associate profile is a well established businessman, interested in using their profession to improve the quality of life of society. The internal network between members, reveals a leadership based on knowledge. The leadership does not follow the hierarchical structure of the club. The national and international network has proved to be small without large amounts of bonds. There are subgroups where the members participate in several at once. Social capital highlights the cooperation and trust between members of the international organization. The associates use the individual networks to implement the projects. There is a retribution of volunteer work performed, proving the theory of giving supports and motivates members

Abstract:
This work is the result of a research whose main purpose is to present the discovery of the genesis of the 1st Grade Rotary State School between 1956 to 1971, taking into account the relationships established between the public and the private in this educational institution. Its specific objectives are to answer some questions related to the implementation of this school in the municipality of Ituiutaba that in the selected years was considered "Rice Capital", because it standed out in economic strength for its intensive production of this grain. Therefore, our purpose also was to understand and analyze the governmental educational guidelines present in the period in question; to analyze documents, newspapers and iconographic clippings related to the emergence of the Rotary School in the years 1956 to 1971; to understand and characterize the historical agents in this process and what mechanisms were made for their stay in school, as well as discuss how the time and space for their operation was organized; to discover the relevance of the school's implementation and its contribution to the population of the municipality; to identify how educational thinking circulated during the era in the categories disseminated through the International Rotary Club Institution; and to understand how the correlation/connection between the international organization and the Rotary School has taken place. The methodological procedure for the research was defined in five distinct phases: a visit to the 1st Grade Rotary State School for the collection of official documents and school iconography in the school archives; visit to the Cultural Foundation of Ituiutaba to read newspapers for the proposed period and to the Ituiutaba Town Hall to read the minutes of the City Council; visit to the Rotary Club of Ituiutaba to read the minutes of the period in question, Rotary journals and magazines; consultation with the IBGE to understand the official statistical data regarding the municipality and the State Public Archive; and survey of bibliographic references, presidential messages, Pedagogical Magazines and of teaching. The results showed that the public and private relations present in the genesis of the school prove that they do not always appear in the Brazilian history of education in the form of conflicts, but also of exchange and conviviality. This possibly evidenced the omission of the Brazilian State towards public education. Thus, we conclude that this research provided the disclosure regarding the situation of the public school instituted in the municipality of Ituiutaba in the selected historical period, especially regarding the genesis of the Rotary School. Having completed this work has expanded the corpus of knowledge about school institutions even more, by making a transnational movement that discussed the condition of the institutionalization of the public school, not only at the local, but also in regional and national level. In this transnational movement we also understand the connection between the Rotary Club of Ituiutaba and the International Rotary Club, thus reflecting its dynamics and the ideology implicit in the Rotary principles reflected in the Rotary School and in the Ituiutaban society by some categories.

Abstract:
There are numerous projects developed by non-governmental organizations promoting peace and international understanding. There are numerous people involved who use their time off volunteering for a cause. However, centenary organizations like Rotary International still have a low degree of notoriety. This thesis is presented in form of case study, unveils outlines of what Rotary is and its main challenges: aging membership and the reduced level of public recognition. To take a representative picture of what is happening in various international clubs 47 surveys were conducted in geographically different clubs. Then, it was created a case study based on these data and also my knowledge of the movement, as a member, participant in various conferences, congresses, seminars, workshops and district councils, as well as conversations and interviews with Rotarians. The suggested approach in solving the case will make it possible to come into direct contact with representatives from Rotary, knowing their actions at the source and have a chance of “being one of them” suggesting strategies for the problems presented, by creating a plan of action to conquer new members and communicate the concept in their community properly.

Abstract:
The most recent data available from the Ministry of University and Research (2017) confirm that in Italy, students of foreign origin who have reached the age of secondary school still prefer to enrol in technical and professional institutes rather than in high schools. The same data also reveal how their school performance tends to be on average lower than that of their peers not of foreign origin, especially in scientific or technical subjects. Very often, the causes of this are to be found in a not yet adequate level of CALP. In this paper we illustrate a project (Po.Li.S.: Potenziamento Lingua dello Studio), the purpose of which was to improve the CALP of these students and in so doing their overall school results and motivation to study.
