Abstract:
This Master thesis is a project commissioned by the Swedish company Ranotor AB. The objective of this thesis is to develop a conceptual solution for a rotary valve mechanism that has to work efficiently in a high-temperature and high-pressure environment. The valve is to operate at high rotational speeds which calls for very short opening time.Modern engineering tools namely Solidworks, Ansys and Matlab, were employed for modelling and analysis of the conceptual solution. The best design solution was selected from three developed concepts, and the selected concept was further developed and optimized. Major material candidates and gas-tight sealing solution were identified and evaluated and the optimal material and seal design was chosen. Optimization of the individual components as well as the whole assembly was performed based on stress, thermal and dynamic analysis. The given design specifications and functions were fulfilled and the results were satisfactory. The obtained results provide a theoretical foundation for the development and application of a rotary valve in high-temperature and high-pressure environment.

Abstract:
This thesis investigates potential materials to be used in the rotary sealing industry that provide low power loss and minimize cost. The studied rotary valve utilizes slots that act as timing valves to allow for flow axially, through the seal face, at particular times within a heat pump cycle. This investigation examines various combinations of multiple PTFE materials, plastics, and soft metals that have been proven to provide low friction coefficients. Leakage and wear requirements are stated for the future use of the rotary valve and are used to determine the effectiveness of sealing the fluid while examining the power loss. In conclusion, the study finds the combination of a modified PTFE stationary ring and Aluminum Bronze rotating face to provide the lowest power loss. Numerical analysis was completed to verify the lubrication regime to be partial lubrication and was also used to investigate geometry changes and impact on the power loss.

Rotary valves have existed for millennia; and while they have developed tremendously since the first Roman valves, many of the same problems have persisted. The basic problems are caused by the coupling of functional requirements, which limits the valve's performance. Using axiomatic design (AD), two of these couplings, including the coupling of the friction-sealing FRs, are studied and resolved. Although more work can be done to improve the patent-pending designs, the concepts presented represent advancements over existing rotary valve designs. The proposed designs have been analyzed for their merits as a valve and for their potential applications, such as in automotive engines.

Abstract:
AN ABSTRACT OF THE THESIS OF Justin W. Behrens, for the Master of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering, presented on June 24, 2011 at Southern Illinois University Carbondale. TITLE: MODIFICATION AND PERFORMANCE EVALUATION OF A MONO-VALVE ENGINE MAJOR PROFESSOR: Dr. Suri Rajan A four-stroke engine utilizing one tappet valve for both the intake and exhaust gas exchange processes has been built and evaluated. The engine operates under its own power, but has a reduced power capacity than the conventional 2-valve engine. The reduction in power is traced to higher than expected amounts of exhaust gases flowing back into the intake system. Design changes to the cylinder head will fix the back flow problems, but the future capacity of mono-valve engine technology cannot be estimated. The back flow of exhaust gases increases the exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) rate and deteriorates combustion. Intake pressure data shows the mono-valve engine requires an advanced intake valve closing (IVC) time to prevent back flow of charge air. A single actuation camshaft with advanced IVC was tested in the mono-valve engine, and was found to improve exhaust scavenging at TDC and nearly eliminated all charge air back flow at IVC. The optimum IVC timing is shown to be approximately 30 crank angle degrees after BDC. The mono-valve cylinder head utilizes a rotary valve positioned above the tappet valve. The open spaces inside the rotary valve and between the rotary valve and tappet valve represent a common volume that needs to be reduced in order to reduce the base EGR rate. Multiple rotary valve configurations were tested, and the size of the common volume was found to have no effect on back flow but a direct effect on the EGR rate and engine performance. The position of the rotary valve with respect to crank angle has a direct effect on the scavenging process. Optimum scavenging occurs when the intake port is opened just after TDC.

Okhotnikov, Ivan. "Design and performance evaluation of a rotary flow control valve for independent metering hydraulics." Thesis, Bournemouth University, 2018. http://eprints.bournemouth.ac.uk/31282/.

Full text
Abstract:
Off road heavy machinery is the second largest contributor to air pollution in terms of the levels of fossil fuel consumption after road cars. This is partly attributed to inefficient power hydraulic systems used to drive these machines’ tools or instruments. A relatively recent idea of an independent metering technology has become a major topics in improving efficiency, reducing fuel consumption and saving energy. Current research and development of independent metering applied to fluid power systems enables energy recuperation capabilities of hydraulics. However, actual industrial implementation cases are still rare, especially in application requiring high flow rates. Flow control valves are used in flow regulation and controlling of hydraulic actuators’ speed. The speed control occurs through throttling, which causes large power losses. Moreover, the substantial flow forces acting on the throttling parts of the valve in high flow rate regimes has resulted in the application of sophisticated multi-staged servo valves. An alternative one-stage design can resolve these issues, but such proposals and studies are still scarce in the literature. This research looks at new design ideas as the means to improve hydraulic valve performance and efficiency. The novelty is also to enable single staged valves to be used in high flow rate applications. The main approach is to simplify and perform a complete redesign of the valve geometrical structure to replace the existing spool and seat valve configuration. The novel design proposed in this thesis is based on a rotary tubular structure, which is less bulky and much lighter. The focus of this investigation has been on the study of the flow characteristics and fluid structure interaction of the new valve’s moving parts using a combination of theoretical, simulation-based and experimental studies. A prototype of the final design was manufactured and tested to validate the simulated data. Test results provided a good experimental validation of analytical and numerical models employed in this investigation. Detailed analysis of the performance of the new suggested valve proved its viability as a strong candidate to replace the existing in-efficient industry standard spool and seat valves. The metering characteristics of the new valve has demonstrated that alternatively designed one-staged flow control valves can create smaller pressure drops, hence, consume less power than the industry standard benchmark. The thesis presents the research, investigation and detailed analysis of a novel unconventional valve design suitable for the independent metering architecture. This research demonstrates the feasibility of the independent metering architecture for use in high flow rates applications. This research further consolidates the position of this new valve can have within the fluid power industry, further expands its range of application paving the way for industry adoption to replace old valves with a new and more efficient valve system.

Abstract:
This report is a bachelor thesis at Karlstad University in collaboration with Invencon AB and Ranotor AB. The goal was to analyze a rotating valve leading water vapor through an inlet and five outlets. The quantifiable results that were addressed in this project are the mass flow through the outlets and the forces affecting the valve and its shaft (primarily radial forces). The tools used for this project are PTC Creo and ANSA for modelling and mesh as well as ANSYS-CFX and Matlab for computational help. The results show that the specified rotational speed of 4600 rpm doesn’t work for this model. The rotational speed was chosen because of an interest in this specific operating condition. A 3 mm radial gap between the rotating valve and the valve housing proved to cause a leakage in the form of pressure loss inside the valve. The boundary conditions that were laid out for this project are not valid for this operating condition. Since the difference in pressure is large (100 down to 1 bar) the flow is choked. A large difference in pressure also makes it important to adjust the total area of the outlets, since the pressure drop affects the density of the vapor. The forces on the rotating valve that were calculated (using ANSYS-CFX) create a foundation for choosing bearings for the valve. If the construction is modified, and/or the rotating valve will operate at a different rotational speed these forces will be subject to change.

Abstract:
The aviation environment holds challenging application constraints for efficient hydraulic system noise reduction devices. Besides strong limits on component weight and size, high safety and reliability standards demand simple solutions. Hence, basic silencers like inline expansion chambers and Helmholtz-Resonators are state-of-the-art aboard commercial aircrafts. Unfortunately, they do not meet today’s noise attenuation aims regarding passenger comfort and equipment durability. Significant attenuation performance is expected from active concepts that generate anti-phase noise. However, such concepts remain a long term approach unless related costs, e.g. due to additional power allocation and real-time control equipment can be avoided. In this paper an active fluid borne noise attenuation concept is discussed that accounts for the mentioned constraints. An aircraft hydraulic pump is considered as main noise source. The active attenuator is an in-house rotary valve design. The basic feature is a known direct shaft coupling principle of pump and rotary valve, so no speed/ frequency control of the valve and no separate power supply are required. The common-shaft principle is further simplified here and proposed as integral feature of future “smart pumps”.

Kessel, Stephen Ronald. "The interaction between rotary valves and pneumatic conveying pipelines." Thesis, University of Greenwich, 1985. http://gala.gre.ac.uk/9292/.

Full text
Abstract:
The object of this work was to investigate the interaction between rotary valves and pneumatic conveying pipelines and the effect which this can have on overall system performance. A review of previous work and current industrial practice revealed that very little work has been published on this subject, although it was evident that some manufacturers of pneumatic conveying systems do have preferred entrainment configurations. Consequently, a preliminary experimental investigation was undertaken with a transparent model of a rotary valve and drop-out box in order to observe the air and solid flow patterns inside the drop-out box. This provided the most important outcome of this work, that is, the discovery that two distinctly different modes of flow can exist in the chamber of a conventional drop-out box. The first of these is a turbulent swirling motion caused by the conveying airstream and is the most desirable operating condition because it results in the most effective entrainment of material into the conveying line. The second is a situation where the drop-out box is effectively 'choked' with product. Models to explain these two conditions have been developed and subsequently tested against data obtained from a full size positive pressure conveying system specifically constructed for this purpose. An extensive experimental programme has been carried out in which the performance of this system was examined with a selection of different entrainment configurations and different test materials. The principal variables investigated were the height and volume of the drop-out box, the orientation of the rotary valve with respect to the pipeline and the conveying air velocity. As a result of this work guidelines have been produced for interfacing rotary valves with pneumatic conveying pipelines. These have been presented as a simple list of eight points and it is anticipated that they will enable systems to be designed with more confidence than has been possible previously.

Abstract:
To minimize the complexity of existing process control valves, the authors derived a new control valve design by functional separation and functional integration of functions. One key element of this new valve design is the functional integration of teh actuator into the valve´s throttle. A hydraulic swivel motor is operated with the process fluid, in this case water. The pressure difference to operate the motor comes from the valve itself. Within this paper we present the control valve design and show in detail how we used the Fail-Early design method to develop the hydraulic swivel motor. The construction is discussed using the experience from manufacturing the prototype and the first exp erimental results are shown. The experiments yield, that the swivel motor principle is promising. Finally, the next development issues are discussed.

In this research, the spotlights are aimed on the historical years between 1959 and 1967, with the main purpose of showing the scenic arrangements of the installation, organization and performance of a Rotary Club in a geographical scenery that was in mutation phase. That territory, formerly denominated Promised Earth or Canaan of the Industry, was soon substituted by the nomenclature Steel Valley .The partners founders of that first Rotary Club conceived themselves as foreigners from the Canaan of the State of Minas that emanated "milk and honey". Native from another lands, they met each other and they were met in order to form a service club in the Nacional Valley of Redemption, but with intense institutional entails to an international corporation. Organized under the doctrine of the interest well understood, the associated agents, each one, with his composition and capital volume, of economic, cultural, social, symbolic or political nature, they allowed, through the mechanism of capital convertibility, to concentrate, in the regional community, a power, capable to produce real effects without apparent waste of energy. As a voluntary and oligarchical association, this service club was, in a way, a institutional vehicle, in the local sphere, of appropriation, incorporation, reproduction and diffusion of visions of world of the ideological corpus of International Rotary.

The Vale dos Vinhedos can be seen as a consolidated wine turistic destination, but may add other attractions, through the development and planning activities related to its landscape since the enoturism cannot develop itself in its fullness, if not take into account the landscape value of a particular region. This study had the purpose of identifying which is the importance of the landscape for those who visit the Vale dos Vinhedos Wine Turistic Route. Being an exploratory-descriptive case study, it was used for data collection, an instrument of semi-structured interview in a quality and quantity nature that was tested and adapted to search over three aplications. The sample included 100 (one hundred) visitors from Vale dos Vinhedos Wine Turistic Route, seeking to identify: the profile of these visitors, their motivations, the attractions that draw attention and their perception about the local landscape. The survey revealed that the profile of visitors are people with higher level of education, who travel with their family and with motivating factor directly related to wine and, together with it, reflects the identity of the Vale dos Vinhedos. The trellised vines were, in the perception of the landscape, what drew the most attention from visitors, representing 40% of the sampling, and these say that they are a natural landscape. But the landscape of the region is culturally modified by the action of man, because from the arrival of Italian immigrants in 1875, it has been tailored. Other elements of the landscape, besides the trellised vines, which were identified by visitors, includes winery, vegetation, the architecture of old houses and, thereby, the local way of life. The results showed up that the landscape of the region is a motivating factor and because of this is a tourist attraction especially for the presence of the trellised vines at the local design landscape. It is conclude that the tourist attraction connected to the grape and wine could be better explored to increase the tourist offer, having a better integration from the landscape like tourist resource and, consequently, contributing to its preservation.

Tourism is known as one of the main industries in the world. It has been applied as an instrument of economic development in the Rota do Vale dos Vinhedos (Route of the Valley of Vineyards), in the municipality of Bento Gonçalves, state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. In the Vale dos Vinhedos, agriculture has specialized in grapegrowing and winemaking (viticulture and viniculture). Over time, the evolution of local agriculture produced a social differentiation process. The activities currently practiced by different types of farmers and production systems in the Vale present different situations both in terms of generating economic surpluses and their distribution among the agents who participate in their appropriation, consequently causing different impacts on the dynamics of development of this theory. In methodological terms, research followed the descriptive exploratory procedure of qualitative and quantitative analysis. The central issue of the study is to look at the development of Rota do Vale dos Vinhedos during the 1990-2005 period, and to identify wine and tourism as factors that drive local economic change. It begins by discussing the evolution of each activity in the economic scene; it analyzes the indicators of participation of grape-growing and winemaking, and then establishes a counterpoint with the indicators for the tourism industry during the same period, affecting the aspect of development from the same temporal perspective. The results indicated that all the types analyzed presented positive added value margins of contribution, emphasizing the systems involving wine-making, grape growing and tourism.

Abstract:
This dissertation is based on the application of an empirical procedure using stated preference techniques for the estimation of the value of travel time for drivers in regional trips, in the context of a choice between tolled and non-tolled routes. It first reviews the theoretical and the empirical approaches for the valuation of travel time and then presents the basic concepts of two other topics relevant for the methodology adopted: choice theory and stated preference methods. An application to a specific case study is then presented, using information from a stated preference survey conducted in 2005 with a large sample of car drivers intercepted at several points in the highway network of the state of São Paulo. The stated preference experimental design considered three attributes: trip time on a tolled route, value of toll and trip time on a non-tolled route. Survey data were analyzed and used for the estimation of discrete choice (multinomial logit) models; values of travel time were derived from estimates of coefficients of an additive linear in the parameters utility function. The specification of the models and the segmentation of the sample allowed the estimation of the variation of travel time according to some selected driver and trip characteristics. Results indicated, for the specific choice context analyzed, an average value of travel time of approximately R$16/h, varying from about R$12/h to R$23/h for different segments of travelers. Trip length was an important characteristic influencing the variation of the value of travel time, which declined as trip length increased. Other important effects were found for leisure trips, for travelers with low income and for those with high family car ownership.

Abstract:
A Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulation of the Bishop Rotary Valve (BRV) engine is developed. The simulation used an existing commercial CFD code, CFX 4.3, with a number of new routines written to allow it to simulate the conditions and motions involved in an internal combustion engine. The code is extensively validated using results from other researchers, and several new validations are performed to directly validate the code for simulating internal combustion engine flows. Firstly, tumble vortex breakdown during the compression stroke of a square piston model engine is modelled. The results of the simulation are validated against published high quality experimental data. Both two- and three-dimensional models are tested, using the k-e and Reynolds stress turbulence models. The Reynolds stress turbulence model simulations successfully predicted the tumble break down process during the compression stroke. A simple three-dimensional Large Eddy Simulation model is also presented. The numerical simulation is then applied to the BRV engine. An in-cylinder flow field not previously described is discovered, created by the unique combustion chamber shape of the BRV engine. The flow field is not adequately described by the traditional descriptions of engine flows, being squish, swirl and tumble. The new flow structure is named 'dual cross tumble', and is characterised by two counter-rotating vortices in the cross tumble plane on either side of the inlet air jet. Analysis of the dual tumble structure indicates that it is most beneficial in high bore to stroke ratio engines. This flow structure has been predicted or visualised by a small number of previous researchers, however no published research has recognised its significance or potential benefits. The validated code is then used to predict the effect of modifying the valve cross sectional area, the effect of the inlet manifold wave, the effect of heat transfer from the inlet manifold walls, the effect of bore to stroke ratio, and the effect of engine speed. This work presents a numerical simulation of a new rotary valve engine technology. This opens up a whole new area of engine aerodynamics research as no detailed examination of the flows in a rotary valve engine have been presented previously. In the process, it discovers a new compression stroke turbulence generation mechanism, 'dual cross tumble', which offers the potential of performance levels not possible using poppet valve engines.

Abstract:
The rotary valve is a widely used mechanical device in many solids-handling industrial processes. However, it may also be responsible for most of the attrition effects occurring in a typical process. In this study, the attrition effects occurring in a rotary valve operating as a stand-alone device and as part of a pneumatic conveying system were investigated. In the former case granular attrition was carried out at three different rotary valve speeds and the experimental results obtained were found to be in good agreement with the Gwyn correlation. In the latter case three typical air flow rates were used in the pneumatic conveying system. The size distribution of the attrition product obtained at the lowest air flow rate used was not adequately described by the Gwyn correlation. The attrition process and mechanisms involved were analysed and the minimum size of the attrition product obtained from both modes of operations was found to be similar.

Mollier chart of R410A refrigerant is used to obtain the corresponding theoretical suction temperatures, discharge temperatures, densities and pressures at different working conditions. Then the corresponding volumes and pressures at different crank angles are calculated based on its thermodynamic properties. ANSYS is used to simulate the valve displacement of the rotary compressor under different operation processes. Under the fix of valve material mechanical properties (density, Young's modulus and Poisson's ratio) and top flange parts, by changing the valve thickness only, the instantaneous valve displacement and the compressor performance caused by the difference between internal and external pressures of the compressor chamber. Simulation shows that the displacement of 0.305mm valve is lower by 4.1% compared with that of 0.25mm valve under the same pressure loading. The experimental test verifies that 0.305mm valve increases the energy efficiency ratio EER (Energy Efficiency Ratio) by 1.8%. The simulated and experimental results are consistent each other.

This research study is regarding to the impacts among the learnging attitude, working value, and the employment pursuit of the vocational school student who is involved into the Rotary Cooperative Education in Hospitality. The majority reference of this study is gatherred from the student groups in the Central part of Taiwan. The first step is generating the surveys, and the effective feedback ratio is 78% out of totally 300 survey reports collected. Second, the statistics data is tested with SPSS (Statistical Package for the Social Sciences) software in Windows 21.0 version. Data analysis is the last step but not the least. The analyzing technique includes the Descriptive Statistics, the Factor Analysis, the Reliability Analysis, the T-test, the One way ANOVA (Analysis of Variance), the Correlation Analysis, and the Regression Analysis. The main discovery of this research and analysis is that study motivation and working hours based on individual’s background have the significant impacts on learning attitudes and work values. Study motivation essentially shapes the learning attitudes, and working hours considerably forms the work values. Other elements in individual’s background do not have obvious effects on them. Besides that, the learning attitude of students who take Rotary Cooperative has significant relevance to work values and future employment wills. And the former determines the latter. On the other hand, the work values and the learning attitude of these students can reflect their future employment wills directly. According to the result of this research, there is no doubt to advise Cooperative Education Students to accumulate their educations as well as pursue practical experience, which is useful to their future employment. However, the progress of Rotary Cooperative learning will be different from one-way learning. Abstract:
The intership at the Comissão de Coordenação e Desenvolvimento Regional de Lisboa e Vale do Tejo (CCDR LVT) was inserted in the "Rotas do Tejo" project as a contribution to the Region of Lisboa e Vale do Tejo’s (RLVT) Maritime Agenda, with a vision for tourism development in the concerned region. Tourism, as an economic sector, has come to stand out as the main source of income in many regions, taking advantage of its natural resources. The significant investment in this field despite advantageous for the locations in question, became a threat to the environment, since its use was not always made in a sustainable way. Thus appearing in this report is the region’s potential for tourism; with a specific study on the survey information about the coastal areas of nine municipalities of Vale do Tejo, linking this research with sustainable development goals. The objective of the internship concerned boosting this particular area, therefore, the proposed tasks were performed in the following steps: searching for information on the European and national policies regarding the sea, water, environment and tourism; collection and analysis of data relating the RLVT; elaboration of possible lines of action and actions to be undertaken; recommending financial sources. For a better awareness of the area proposed for the case study, a survey and gathering of information were performed, organizing the latter in descriptive tables followed by an analysis of the local reality. When designing this data it was possible to make a proposal for funding sources, compatible with European and national funds. This report seeks to understand what measures have been takenrelated to the sea and inland waters, bothat European and national levels, in order to implement EU directives learned during the Masters’ degree, to the work done during the intership at the instituitionabove mencioned. The relationship between tourism and the environment led to the creation of sustainable actions that could be implemented with the lowest possible impact on the area of study.

Wang, KeSheng. "Vibration monitoring on electrical machine using Vold-Kalman filter order tracking." Diss., 2008. http://hdl.handle.net/2263/27613.

Abstract:
Conventional rotating machine vibration monitoring techniques are based on the assumption that changes in the measured structural response are caused by deterioration in the condition of the rotating machine. However, due to changing rotational speed, the measured signal may be non-stationary and difficult to interpret. For this reason, the order tracking technique was introduced. One of main advantages of order tracking over traditional vibration monitoring techniques, lies in its ability to clearly identify non-stationary vibration data, and to a large extent exclude the influences from varying rotational speed. Several order tracking techniques have been developed and researched during the past 20 years. Among these techniques, Fourier Transform Based Order Tracking (FT-OT), Angle Domain Sampling Based Order Tracking (AD-OT) and Vold-Kalman Filter Order Tracking (VKF-OT) are the three most popular techniques and have been commercialised in software. While the VKF-OT is comparatively new, and both its theory and application are different from the other two techniques, the unique advantages of this technique has led to increased research attention in this field. This growing interest in research on the application of the VKF-OT technique on real machines, and its comparative advantages with respect to other order tracking techniques, inspired the present research. With this work, a comprehensive literature of electrical machine condition monitoring was surveyed, which gives a broad perspective of electrical machine monitoring methods ranging through electrical techniques, vibration techniques, temperature techniques and chemical techniques. To simply the process of applying VKF-OT in initial investigations, simulated single-degree-of freedom and two-degree-of freedom rotor models were established, and the application of the VKF-OT technique on these simulated models was explored. Because most of the current research draws significantly on an understanding of the VKF-OT theory, it was also necessary to review and summarize the current status of VKF-OT theory from previous work, as well as explore the procedures for selection of its filter bandwidth when dealing with real data. An experimental set-up for monitoring an electrical alternator was constructed. Real experimental data were subsequently used to compare the advantages and disadvantages of the three popular order tracking techniques. The unique time domain advantage of VKF-OT was implemented, using crest factor and kurtosis values as indictors of the fault condition of the machine. This gave encouraging results.

Abstract:
Neste sentido nasce a arte rupestre como recurso turístico visando o desenvolvimento do turismo regional e consequentemente aumentar as receitas internas.
The cultural tourism has been greatest demand by tourists as way to takes up their spare times. At this demand connect other important elements of each zone including handicraft, gastronomy, landscape, among others. In this case study, the Lima valley, we examined a great wealth of cultural and environmental heritage. However is in the scope of Schematic and Atlantic Rock Art that we developed this work. In this way Rock Art arise as touristic resource here set up as way to developing the regional tourism and as a result improve internal revenues. This project includes creation of one route, essentially in rural areas, that form the «Rock Art Route of the Northwest». For this to materialize the work was divided into three stages: initial work office, where secondary sources and cartographic sources were consulted; fieldwork that led to the archeological exploration, and finally, the advanced working office where they were gathered all the information, created SWOT analysis and drawn the planning and implementation of the courses. In this route we create four pedestrian paths. All paths can be made by different ways of locomotion and are associated to hiking which, represent an opportunity for sustainable economic to develop in rural areas. The main objectives of this study undergo transform the rock art in a cultural tourism product by linking the sites already valued by other sites, thereby contributing to the diversity of tourism products in the region, contributing to the creation of sustainable products, to extend the stay of tourists in the valley of Lima and contribute to local and regional development at the economic, social and cultural level. The "Route”, as well as memory and local identity, enables the discovery of archaeological and intangible heritage.
