Abstract:
The Spinning Ellipse Speed Illusion is an illusion of perceived speed in which a low-aspect ratio “fat” ellipse will appear to rotate more slowly than a higher-aspect ratio “skinny” ellipse that is rotating at the same speed. This illusory percept can be observed when the ellipses are defined by luminance, color, relative motion, and dotted contours and across a wide range of rotational speeds and eccentricities. The illusion is not limited to rotating ellipses and can be observed with different-shaped contours as well. The Spinning Ellipse Speed Illusion illustrates that the perceived speed o

This volume meets the needs of radiology residents to become adept at interpreting musculoskeletal (MSK) imaging studies. It does so by presenting core knowledge and fundamentals that must be learned to accurately and effectively interpret MSK studies by the trainee and non-specialist. The goal is to impart to residents, as well as to refresh for practitioners, essential facts in a concise and readable format so the reader becomes conversant with all imaging modalities used and the essentials of interpretation and technique. The concept of symmetry plays a central role in our understanding of the fundamental laws of Nature. Through a deep mathematical theorem due to A.E. Noether, all conservation laws of classical physics are related to symmetries. In this chapter we start from the intuitively obvious notions of translation and rotation symmetries which are part of the axioms of Euclidian geometry. Following W. Heisenberg, we introduce the idea of isospin as a first example of an internal symmetry. A further abstraction leads to the concept of a global versus local, or gauge symmetry, which is a fundamental proper

Figurines made in Honduras between 900 and 400 BCE established connections among persons through fragmentation, partibility, and enchainment. These figurines were made in two distinct sizes, both miniaturized. Their miniaturization requires concentrated attention to worked surfaces that reveal, on close examination, fine detail, requiring handling and rotation. Larger figurines are rarely recovered intact, often forming assemblages of heads or bodies that imply the dispersal of a partible body. Smaller figurines pierced for suspension as pendants normally are completely intact. They differ in

Three fundamental and equivalent mathematical frameworks (“pictures”) in which quantum theory can be lodged are exhibited and their relations and relative advantages/disadvantages are discussed: (1) The Schrödinger picture considers the dynamical development of the overall system state vector as a function of time relative to a fixed complete set of time-independent basis eigenstates; (2) The Heisenberg picture (convenient for the use of Green’s functions) embeds the dynamical development of the system in a time-dependent counter-rotation of the complete set of basis eigenstates relative to th

The brief reflection that follows is a discussion of how and why celestial bodies were seen as alive in the celestial physics of the sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries. From Aristotle to the angelology of the Scholastics and through to the new astronomy of Johannes Kepler, vitalism of some kind played a part in the study of celestial bodies. Celestial vitalism probably reached its height in the late Renaissance, when it was strongly informed by medical ideas. Those living skies seemed to embody animal souls and their forces. Venus and Mars both had liquid water long ago, while Venus may even have been comfortably warm and humid before modern complex life developed on Earth. What if the job of police was to cultivate the political will of a community to live with itself (rather than enforce law, keep order, or fight crime)? This book describes a world where that is the case. The Republic of China on Taiwan spent nearly four decades as a single-party state under dictatorial rule (1949–1987) before transitioning to liberal democracy. This book describes the social life of a neighborhood police station during the first rotation in executive power following the democratic transition. It shows an apparent paradox of how a strong democratic order was built on a foundati
