Abstract:
The presented research focuses on the relationship between art and architecture. On the example of the mural Der Weg der Roten Fahne (The Path of the Red Flag) installed at the western façade of the Kulturpalast Dresden(Palace of Culture in Dresden) the author analyses the necessity of the mural as an immanent element to communicate political decisions of the German Democratic Republic's government to the public by using architecture. Up until now the mural reinforces the political value of the International Style building in function and shape and links its volume to the urban layout.

Abstract:
The royal palace museums of the Grassfields’ Kingdoms of West Region of Cameroon are well recognized for the preservation of culturally significant objects and practices. To date, the role of palace museums in wildlife conservation has received little consideration. Herein, a preliminary study into the animalbased artefacts of palace museums from a wildlife conservation perspective is presented. A total of 11 chiefdom palace museums in the West Region of Cameroon were surveyed and the animal species represented in their exhibitions recorded. Parts of 32 different animal species, including locally extinct large mammals such as lion, cheetah, chimpanzee, and elephant were found. The primary purpose for inclusion of specimens in palace museums was for preservation of culture. However, potential wildlife conservation focused uses to which palace museums may also put their collections are discussed herein. KeyWords: Grassfields, Bamileke, Bamoun, Culture, Education, Mammals.

Abstract:
Visual recognition of objects is generally assumed to be independent of the location in the field of view. Experiments have shown, however, that for stimuli such as random-dot clouds recognition can be severely affected by retinal displacement (Foster and Kahn, 1985 Biological Cybernetics51 305 – 312; Nazir and O'Regan, 1990 Spatial Vision5 81 – 100; Dill and Fahle, Perception & Psychophysics in press). In a series of new experiments, we tested whether similar shortcomings of translation invariance can be obtained also with more natural-looking objects. For that purpose, we tested human subjects with 3-D animal-like shapes that had been employed previously in studies of rotation invariance (Edelman, 1995 Biological Cybernetics72 207 – 220). Some of our experiments included same - different discrimination, while in others the subjects had to label the briefly displayed stimulus with one of two possible labels. In both tasks, translation invariance was found to be incomplete: performance was significantly reduced when object memory had to be transferred to new locations. This positional specificity parallels the imperfect generalisation of recognition over rotation in depth, reported in the past years by many research groups. Similar to those findings, our present results suggest that the mechanisms of visual object recognition may be view-based rather than object-based. As before, these results have implications concerning the various theoretical approaches to the understanding of recognition currently under consideration.

Abstract:
The smallness of the sound is based on intensity. When it affects the brain and the heart, first blood activity is affected and then it is transformed into mental sensation. To measure the intensity of noise, we use the decibel method. It is also known as Phan; It is worth noting here that if the sound level of a flute produced by a flute is 40 fane, the level of the sound of the two flutes would be only about 43 pans instead of 80 pans and the sound level of 10 flutes would be around 50 pans. There is a difference in the intensity of the sound and not the highness of it.

Abstract:
ObjectiveTo evaluate the relationship between health-related quality of life (HR-QoL) and both physical and psychiatric factors in a large, international, multicentre cohort of patients with isolated dystonia, the Dystonia Coalition.MethodsNatural history data from 603 patients with isolated dystonia (median age 57 years (IQR: 48 to 64 years), 67.0% women) were prospectively acquired and analysed. HR-QoL (RAND 36-Item Health Survey), severity of depressive symptoms, generalised anxiety (Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale) and social anxiety (Liebowitz Social Anxiety Scale) were assessed. Dystonia severity (Burke-Fahn-Marsden Dystonia Rating Scale) and dystonic tremor were examined. Statistical predictors of HR-QoL were calculated using saturated path analysis.ResultsReduced HR-QoL was strongly associated with the degree of depressive symptoms and generalised and social anxiety (8/8 RAND 36 subscales, p≤0.001). Increased dystonia severity was associated with worse physical functioning, physical and emotional role functioning and social functioning (all p≤0.001). The presence of tremor correlated with worse physical functioning and pain (all p≤0.006). Younger age was associated with reduced emotional well-being and vitality (all p≤0.006). There were no HR-QoL differences between sexes.ConclusionHR-QoL in isolated dystonia is strongly associated with psychiatric and physical features. While current standard of care focus on motor aspects of dystonia, comprehensive care should address both physical and mental aspects of health.

Abstract:
On 26th December 1999, hurricane Lothar blew over Europe causing widespread damages, particularly on forested areas of Western Switzerland. One consequence of uprooted trees were depressions in the ground where rain water could collect and remain, depending on the soil characteristics. Colonisation of these aquatic depressions by plants and animals was surveyed in 2000. Our study showed that these new depressions were only colonized secondarily, organisms (insects and amphibians)preferring aquatic biotopes already present in the surrounding forest such as ditches, marshes or ponds. First colonization started around mid-May, but only within the depressions which were deep and filled with permanent water. The present study describes the colonization process of these depressions and discusses their contribution to forest biodiversity.

Abstract:
AbstractThe amphipod diversity in the Siberian Lake Baikal is unique, with some 260 endemic species and 80 additional subspecies recognized so far. Three general patterns of differentiation in molecular data, however, suggest that this is still a gross underestimate of the actual number of species. Firstly, allozyme analyses regularly indicate a species-level distinction for taxa previously treated as subspecies (here corroborated for Micruropus talitroides / eurypus, M. wahlii / platycercus and Eulimnogammarus verrucosus / oligacanthus). Secondly, so far unrecognized (sibling) species are detected even sympatrically (e.g., in both the Micruropus complexes above). Thirdly, 'conspecific' samples from different parts of the lake, of several Pallasea spp., regularly show diagnostic allozyme differences suggesting presence of vicariant sibling species in the main geological subdivisions of the basin. Extrapolating the observations to the whole of the Baikalian amphipod fauna, a reasonable projection for the total number may be close to a thousand species. Molecular data suggest that the conventional Baikalian lineages are remarkably old, whereas the vicariant new taxa may have arisen recently in the (early) Pleistocene. These dual levels of diversity are paradoxical in view of the lake's history and the forces supposed to underlie the diversification and speciation processes. The well defined and specialized forms originated in times when the climate and environments were grossly different from the present: not as a response to the present kind of environments. On the other hand, the divergence that has arisen within the time frame of the environmentally modern Lake Baikal (a single basin and cool climate, < 2-3 Myr) appears to be related to geography rather than to adaptive features of morphology and ecology. The patterns prompt a reconsideration of the role of geographical isolation in recent speciation within Lake Baikal.

Abstract:
Habitats and landscape fragmentation, caused by linear land transports infrastructures, is one of the major cause for the current loss of biodiversity. Among those infrastructures, road is a major cause of fragmentation, especially as it possess specific traffic-linked effects, which induces wildlife-vehicles collisions and landscape pollution. In order to decrease those negative effects, mitigation measures are taken, among which wildlife crossings, enabling wildlife to cross the road. Road also creates new potential habitats for small wildlife species in anthropogenic and fragmented landscapes. In this essay are shown (1) the potential as habitat of different road-linked elements; (2) the possibility to anticipate wildlife-vehicles collisions in order to improve the position of mitigation measures; (3) the importance of methodology in the evaluation of wildlife crossings effectiveness; and (4) the possibility to improve existing wildlife crossings. Those results will allow improving landscape defragmentation strategies

Abstract:

You could say that the Swedish artist Felix Gmelin in his art uses media to get closer or further away from what we consider to be the reality and also truth. The purpose of this study is to discuss what this means for the intention of his art works. The starting point is my own aesthetic experience of his painting and the installations A Gentleman’s agreement (1996), Farbtest, Die Rothe Fahne II (2003) and Tools and Grammar 2.5 (2007). Each of these works of art consists of different kinds of prefabricated material such as articles, films and documents. These kinds of material are often considered to stand in the way of the aesthetic experience, maybe because they are supposed to be closer to reality and therefore to truth. The thesis of this study is that the truth in art is inscribed in the aesthetic framework of each art piece and also in the technical support it uses. If for example the support consists of an investigative journalist’s documentary research, in Rosalind Krauss’ description, the truth might be found in the authenticity of the documentary material. If the technical support has to do with sampling instead, as in the re-use of existing materials to create new works of art, the truth can probably not be found in the different pieces of material but in the work ofart in itself. It does not matter then if the different pieces of material it consists of is traditionally considered unaesthetic. The conclusion of this study is that Gmelin’s Gentleman’s agreement, Farbtest, Die Rothe Fahne II and Tools and Grammar 2.5 actually discuss what truth is and if there is an aesthetic truth.
