Based on a validation of the numerical methods with an experiment, numerical simulations are carried out to study the effect of tip clearance size on the performance and tip leakage flow in a dual-stage counter-rotating axial compressor. The predicted results showed that the variation of the tip clearance size in rotor2 has a more significant impact on the overall performance and stall margin of the compressor. In addition, the impact of the tip clearance size effect is mainly on the rotor with the tip clearance size variation. The variation of the tip clearance size in rotor2 almost has no in

The uneven mass distribution of gyro rotors results in vibration, rotation and drift of gyro rotors, which seriously affect the performance index and life of gyro rotors. However, because there is no rigid connection between the rotary shaft and the shell of the gyro rotor, the dynamic balancing machine can only balance the vibration component of the single braced frame gyroscope rotor, and can’t measure the gyro rotor’s rotation component. A new idea for a contra-rotary ramjet engine is presented. To define the theoretical limits of the non-typical, contra-rotary ramjet engine configuration, its analytical model was developed. The main weakness of existing rotary ramjet engine projects is the very high rotational speed of the rotor required for achieving supersonic inlet flow. In this paper, a new idea for a contra-rotary ramjet engine (CORRE) is presented and analyzed. This paper presents the results of

AbstractActuators with low inertia and high bandwidth are of great interest for haptic devices, as they improve the quality of force rendering and transparency. This paper describes, as a proof of concept, a new design in rotary induction motors, the Axial-DSIM (Axial Double-Sided Induction Motor). This motor has a simple design construction that consists of a thin and lightweight disc-shaped moving secondary (rotor) surrounded by fixed primaries on both sides that generate a rotating magnetic field that induces a force on the disc. The low inertia of this motor and its principle of operation make it possible to render high-fidelity torques with high dynamics.

Abstract:
The wake effect is the biggest challenge when locating downwind turbines in wind farms which imposes large separation distances between turbines. In the present work, CFD simulations are presented to study possible configurations of wind farms of Savonius wind turbines. The farm is composed by in steps, starting from two-turbine configuration, adding one turbine until reaching a cluster of closely set ten rotors with an average power coefficient of 0.225. This value is very close to the single rotor’s power coefficient. The power density of the cluster is 7.55 W/m2 which is much higher than si

Abstract Most fully analytical treatments of rotor whirl are restricted to very simple rotor geometries, and have limited use while studying real-world rotors. Analysis of more complex rotors is routinely carried out in Finite Element software such as Ansys, but this is less effective at generating fundamental insights to inform the design process. This paper is motivated by the ongoing development of a Supercritical-CO2 turbine rotor, and illustrates a rotor model of intermediate complexity. Such a model, given the relative novelty of the turbine design task stemming from the very high rotati

This report summarizes computational fluid dynamics (CFD) results of electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) geometries using the SU2 Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) solver. Geometries were generated based on the Smart Transportation Infrastructure Initiative (STII) Rappor 15th iteration with various rotor-installment solutions. It was found that although open rotors installed on an underwing pylon were superior to shrouded rotors installed in a canoe, the canoe configuration would provide more potential for improvement, and using a canoe door to cover the first rotor opening woul

In this paper, an automated framework is presented to perform helicopter rotor blade planform optimization. This framework contains three elements, Dakota, ParBlade, and RCAS. These elements are integrated into an environment control tool, Galaxy Simulation Builder, which is used to carry out the optimization. The main objective of this work is to conduct rotor performance design optimizations for forward flight and hover. The blade design variables manipulated by ParBlade are twist, sweep, and anhedral. The multi-objective genetic algorithm method is used in this study to search for the optim

This paper presents advancements in a surrogate-based, rotor blade design optimization framework for improved helicopter performance. The framework builds on previous successes by allowing multiple airfoil sections to designed simultaneously to minimize required rotor power in multiple flight conditions. Rotor power in hover and forward flight, at advance ratio 𝜇 = 0.3, are used as objective functions in a multi-objective genetic algorithm. The framework is constructed using Galaxy Simulation Builder with optimization provided through integration with Dakota. Three independent airfoil sections

Abstract:
A framework for optimizing rotor blade airfoil shape is presented. The framework uses two digital workflows created within the Galaxy Simulation Builder (GSB) software package. The first is a workflow enabling the automated creation of a surrogate model for predicting airfoil performance coefficients. An accurate surrogate model for the rapid generation of airfoil coefficient tables has been developed using linear interpolation techniques that is based on C81Gen and ARC2D CFD codes. The second workflow defines the rotor blade optimization problem using GSB and the Dakota numerical optimization
