Full textThis Work Project studies established distribution channels strategies’ adjustments due to continuous customers’ needs updates and market challenges. Qualitative and quantitative views support the analysis, based on two real cases within the same company. It was found that cases’ negotiations may turn comparable premises in distinct developments and outcomes. Lessons from the past, if used to address future cases, would be helpful through customer satisfaction focused perspectives. It is suggested that distribution approach choices may not be homogeneous along the business and they must rely on who is able to effectively complete the process from product source to the customer.

Full textEm Portugal, o período industrial foi um dos maiores impulsionadores do crescimento e desenvolvimento urbano. Em meados do século XIX, com a aceleração das industrializações, a vila do Barreiro torna-se um importante polo industrial para o restante País. Contudo após vários anos de auge industrial o vasto património é quase inexistente, devoluto ou em ruínas, tornando-se assim numa zona com fortes dissonâncias e grandes vazios urbanos. A escolha deste território surge da oportunidade de revitalizar um lugar dotado de um património natural significativo, sustentado num processo de intervenção minimalista e que valoriza a identidade e a memória do lugar. A componente chave da oportunidade enunciada, corresponde à possibilidade de criação de novos usos, quer para os vazios urbanos quer para os edifícios existentes a reabilitar. A proposta incide na zona ribeirinha de Alburrica, tendo como objetivo a reabilitação da Quinta do Braamcamp e do Moinho de maré, assim como a dinamização de atividades desportivas, recreativas tornando este lugar com cariz turístico e consequente desenvolvimento económico local. A valorização das zonas verdes existentes consiste na conceção e otimização das acessibilidades dentro do local de intervenção assim como a sua ligação com o centro da cidade do Barreiro através de percursos em palafita.
ABSTRACT: In Portugal, the Industrial Period was one of the main drivers of urban growth and development. In the middle of the nineteenth century, with the acceleration of the industrialization, the village of Barreiro becomes an industrial center for the rest of the country. However, after several years of industrial boom the vast heritage is almost nonexistent, empty or in ruins making it an area of great asymmetries and marked by large urban voids. The choice of this territory arises from the opportunity of revitalizing a place endowed with a significant natural heritage, in a sustainable way and through a process of minimal intervention and that values the identity and memory of the place. The key component of this opportunity concerns the possibility of creating new uses, both for the urban voids and for the existing buildings being rehabilitated. The proposal focuses on the riverside area of Alburrica, aiming at the rehabilitation of the Quinta do Braamcamp and its Tide Mill, as well as the promotion of sports and recreational activities, making this place a tourist destination and, consequently, fostering local economic development. The enhancement of existing green areas consists of the design and optimization of accessibilities within the intervention site, as well of its connection with the center of the city of Barreiro through stilt routes.

Full textThe current doctoral thesis presents the development of an analytical procedure for the quantitative analysis of fatty acid ethyl esters (FAEE) in hair and in skin surface lipids using headspace solid phase microextraction (HS-SPME) and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) as well as a method based on high-performance liquid chromatography with photodiode array detection (HPLC-DAD) to determine squalene concentrations in lipid extracts. The results obtained from analysis of samples from different alcohol consuming groups showed that FAEE are suitable markers for long-term alcohol misuse. Concerning sensitivity and specifity they are at least as good as other commonly used markers like GGT, CDT or MCV. The following provisional cut-off values were established: for chronically excessive alcohol consumption, the sum of the four FAEE (ethyl myristate, ethyl palmitate, ethyl oleate and ethyl stearate) found in the highest mean concentrations should be > 1 ng/mg in hair; for non-drinkers, concentrations < 0,4 ng/mg are typical. The quotient obtained by dividing the FAEE concentration by the squalene concentration was defined as the relative FAEE concentration, which provides a better classification of the samples regarding the consumer groups through hair analysis. Relative FAEE values also allow a reasonable comparison in the case of skin surface lipid concentrations for the first time. 2 ng/µg is suggested as a preliminary cut-off value. As a further important result of the current work, the mechanism of incorporation of FAEE into hair was clarified. It was shown that fatty acid ethyl esters are incorporated into hair mainly through sebum.

Full textThis PhD thesis is a comparative study between tontines practiced on the African migrant market in the Parisian district of Château-Rouge and those practiced in the market of Brazzaville, Congo. In the Congo, tontines spring up in the absence of other accessible monetary and social protection institutions. Therefore tontines are an instrument of financial security enabling small businesses to avoid spending all their earnings on a daily basis. They allow for members to protect themselves from their inclination to overspend or waste money and to shelter money from theft or pressure from peers. Tontines constitute an alternative to the formal banking system for populations with low monetary income, but they also channel savings which fuel savings accounts and serve as working capital to micro-finances institutions. In the Parisian migratory context, Congolese women feel the need to replicate this device: tontines thus become a market integration instrument and a vehicle for socialization. Moreover illegal female immigrants excluded from the French banking and insurance system resort to tontines as a means of social protection and savings. Through financing projects in their country of origin, tontines establish a bridge between immigrant populations and their relatives back home. In the specific case of female prostitutes, tontines appear to be an instrument of symbolic dirty-money laundering

Full textThe objective of this thesis is to study the historical and geographical construction of border urban West African diasporas through the economic dynamics that drive these business communities. Who are the border traders? Where do they come from, what motivates them? How they are organized to build their wealth? Based on the life stories of thirty seven among the richest traders settled in the border area of Gaya-Malanville and Kamba-Birni-N'Konni Illela, this thesis tries to give answers to these questions. The study shows that these traders most were in their early labor migrants. Following a journey rich in experiences, having helped to build social and financial capital, they settled in the border towns where they have managed to mobilize this capital to take advantage of the border position and build their wealth. Full textThis dissertation relates the evolution of the formation of rural family through three periods before 1954, 1955-1986, 1987-2011 in the Red River Delta in the North of Vietnam. The theoretical cadre is referring to the work of Alain Girard, Claude Henryon and Edmond Lambrechts, François Héran and Michel Bozon, to the analysis of conditions for formation of one generation and generating reports of Karl Mannheim, to the analysis of the social transformation of Pierre Bourdieu from his book Work and workers in Algeria. The fiel survey by interview and observation was realized with spouses who had their marriage between references dates. Viêt Nam has experienced in the twentieth century big events which we refer. It crossed the feudal-colonial period, the period of socialist construction and the period of the market economy with a socialist orientation. Starting from political, economic, legal, educational, and demographic contexts of the country, through empirical data on the subject and survey results, we try to identify the main characteristics of the marriage of each period and the social mechanisms which determine the choice of spouse by examining the main aspects of the entry process in union: circumstances of meeting, conditions of courting, marriage decision-making, criteria for selecting, and marriage rituals. All of this aims at understanding the continuities and changes of this evolution. We observe that the geographical distance becomes more marked between the municipalities of origin of the spouses. The contexts of courting are more and more marked by the existence of the social networks and by the system of the education and training. The youth autonomy is affirmed. We find concordances between survey results and sociodemographic data recently observed in Viêt Nam

Full textThe Afar triple junction is a unique region that links the Red Sea, the Gulf of Aden and the Ethiopian rift, and where it is possible to study the different stages of continental breakup, from early rifting to seafloor spreading and development of continental passive margins. Extension and magmatic activity are generally thought to be restricted to the active volcanic segments of the rift or to oceanic ridges. However, magmatic activity is also present on the continental margins flanks of the Afar rift, southern Red Sea and Gulf of Aden. The ambient noise tomography and teleseismic body-wave tomography are complementary methods that allow imaging the crust and upper mantle, and help to reveal magmatic systems. Our tomographic studies of the Afar region provide evidence for the presence of complex magmatic systems under the Afar rift flanks, currently modifying the crust and linked with hydrothermal systems near the surface. The emplacement of intruded or under-plated dense magmatic material in the Afar lower crust accommodates the extension outside of the active magmatic segments. In addition, the Red Sea margin flanks in Yemen are affected by magmatism caused by localized small-scale upwellings of mantle material, from a broad abnormally hot mantle zone located beneath Afar and southwestern Yemen. We also suggest the presence of magmatic systems with or without a volcanic expression at the surface, beneath the passive margins shoulders of the eastern Gulf of Aden. We propose that these systems could be fed by small-scale convection caused by lithosphere thickness variations at the edge of the Arabian plate and near the Gulf of Aden main fracture zones

Full textBy examining the commonalities by structural, stylistic and semiotic tools, and by themes, this study aims to find the commonalities between the two Chinese and French novels: Dream of the Red Chamber by Cao Xueqin and Remembrance of Things Past by Marcel Proust. Based on our analysis in Part I, a specific form on three aspects - the narration, the system of characters and the temporality - is found to be common in both works. It is of a circular shape, closing in on itself, analogue to a metaphor but extends to all the text, which we call "the metaphorization." The metaphorization on these three aspects will be the center of a new aesthetic, proper but common to both works. In Part II, we will show that metaphorzation makes possible the formation of a self-referential world in the interior of the two works, and the three categories of signs inside a fiction - the Signifier, the Signified and the Referent - will have the opportunity to draw their source only in the interior of the novel. We are going to investigate into the fantastic that lies under the appearance of realism in the narration of the two stories of “Marcel” and “Jia Jade magique.” The metaphorization is not only an important part of our theory, it helps to discuss on the very essence of the literature in this present study. By converging these two novels by their similarity, we wish to make interesting discoveries from a comparative point of view

These books have in common the themes of travel, memory and creation. The three protagonists all long for the lost paradise of their childhood, thus they search for their origins. Travelling in space and time, on the outside and inside themselves, they become archaeologists of their own memory, digging for forgotten treasures. Is remembrance a topos of travel literature?

The feeder bus is high accessibility. It can expand the service range of rail transportation and is usually used as a last-mile transportation mode. It can also bring passengers to a specific public facility such as a hospital or a shopping mall. Both rail stations and public facilities aim to reach more target groups, that is, to achieve the goal of maximizing the market potential. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to propose a feeder bus route design method that maximizes market potential. Traditional bus route design methods cannot be used to solve the problem of maximizing the market potential of feeder bus routes because these methods do not consider the existing route coverage and ignore the characteristics of potential target groups. Therefore, through spatial analysis, this study proposes a method for analyzing spatial gaps in feeder services for public transit and defines market potential indicators to reflect the characteristics of potential target groups. Consequently, the market potential is maximized as the objective function, while the circuity and budget are constrained. Since the feeder route design problem is an NP-hard problem, it is difficult to use traditional mathematical programming methods to obtain an accurate and optimal solution within a reasonable amount of time. Therefore, to solve this problem, this study proposes a discrete particle swarm optimization algorithm by improving the coding and iterative updating method for particle swarm optimization. This study uses the feeder bus route design of the Taiwan High Speed Rail Miaoli Station as a case study to verify the effectiveness and applicability of the proposed method. The market potential indicator values for routes designed using this method are significantly higher than those proposed by the government according to the rule of thumb. Higher market potential values may indicate that more passengers will be attracted, thereby benefiting both public transportation companies and the high-speed rail, which proves that the method proposed in this study can effectively design feeder bus routes that maximize market potential.

Previous event studies show mixed results about the announcement effect of new product introductions on firms’ market value. Because prior researches focus on either cross industries sample or single manufacturing industries, we thereof hope to clarify that ambiguity by studying this effect in the context of a service industry. This study empirically estimates the impact of new route announcements on the market value of airline companies. Using the sample of U.S. airlines over a 10 year period, we further identify factors that influence the direction and magnitude of the change in market value. To provide more insights, we also examine if those influences vary across different groups of announcements. Our work extends the body of literature about the impact of new product announcements and the literature about new entry effects in airline industry. Moreover, these findings will provide insights to managers and investors in evaluating new route opening decision.

This research examines the stock market reactions to the airline route-terminating announcements by using event study analysis. The uniqueness of the airline industry makes the route-terminating announcement an important issue to the society. Some previous studies already investigated the market reactions to terminating announcements of product, project or plant operation. The empirical evidence shows that when the investors have complete information about the operation of the announcing company, the termination announcements will be accompanied by positive market reactions. On the contrary, when the investors do not have complete information about the announcing company, the termination announcements will be accompanied by negative market reactions. The sample in this study is composed of 89 announcements made by 18 airlines from 1983 to 2003. Based on the empirical findings, no clear impact of route termination to the stock price can be found. But terminations that are related with firm specific reasons and that terminate multiple routes at the same time will have lower two days cumulative abnormal return. Also, there is a negative relation between the growth opportunity of airline and two days cumulative abnormal return.

This study is to be directed towards the cross-commuting problem among the suburbs, and analyzing the feasibility of integrating the suburban rapid transit (SRT) and the radial rapid transit (RRT). Hopefully, it is aim at making a suitable plan about how to combine the SRT and RRT to solve the cross-commuting problem and to promote the effectiveness of the whole transportation system. A continuum approximation technique is proposed to separate the study region into 10,000 arithmetic grids and assign travelers’ optimal access mode and route choices by minimizing their generalized total travel costs. The model analyzes commuter’ mode and route choices at every residential site, that is, how commuters live in different locations of a metropolitan area will travel along surface streets straight to the workplace, travel along surface streets and expressways, travel along surface streets and then ride on the rapid transit. Furthermore, the study considers variations in commuters’ values of time and residential locations to aggregate the passenger’s demand of the SRT. Then, the study formulates the long-term and short-term demand-supply interaction models to derive the optimal route, fare and frequency of the SRT. Generalized total commuters’ saved travel cost, SRT construction costs, SRT operating costs and SRT vehicle acquisition costs, are formulated to construct a long-term demand-supply interaction model with the objective of minimizing total system cost. On the other hand, SRT operating revenue, SRT operating costs and SRT vehicle acquisition costs, are formulated to construct a short-term demand-supply interaction model with the objective of maximizing operator’s operating profits. Finally, an example of Taipei metropolitan corridors for rail rapid transit is used to illustrate application of the model in this study. The results show the market areas of SRT, optimal residential locations suitable for each of different traveling mode and route combinations, equi-travel time contours and equi-travel cost contours. The results can be used as guidelines on determining the optimal operational plans of SRT for operators, the optimal access mode and route decisions for travelers and the optimal route selection for SRT planner.

Due to the economy of Mainland China grows rapidly in recent years, the demand of air transportation in China has become one of the main markets in the world. After the first cross-strait charter flight executed from Taiwan to Shanghai in January 2003, it has passed more than 12 years, however, due to the political issues between the two sides, mainland Chinese residents are still unable to have a transit flight via Taiwan to the other destinations. Cross-strait flights opening for mainland Chinese transferring via Taiwan has been a main topic of interest to the aviation industry in Taiwan. Once Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport becomes a transit airport option to mainland Chinese travelers, it will be expected to bring a large amount of passengers making stopover flights via Taiwan, which would not only increase the traffic volume but also help Taiwan develop into a regional air transportation hub. This research is to develop an airport-pair demand model and applies it to the air transportation system between major origins of China to Los Angeles of the United Sates. By incorporating the airport pair data of fare, traffic volumes, flight frequencies, block time, distance, minimum connection time and other considerable factors from May 2010 to November 2014, this research is based on aggregate Logit Model to forecast the market share allocations of each transit hubs of mainland Chinese travelers’ choice of routes to Los Angeles. The study also estimates the traffic volume and the market share of mainland Chinese passengers transferring via Taiwan Taoyuan International airport under the assumption of the limitation will be relieved by 2016. The results would provide references to the aviation industry of Taiwan to estimate the market potential of mainland Chinese passengers transiting via Taiwan. For airline companies, the study illustrates the potential markets in China, which would be also helpful for long term fleet planning and expansions. The Growth rate of Taiwan pharmaceutical market is limited since the global budget conducted. Products will be developed and launched successfully in Taiwan market before exported to foreign market. Not only new strength、new formulation、new application route and new combination but also first launched global generics are good opportunities for Taiwan pharmaceutical companies which intent to develop the tech. and business. They can build up patent barrier, create product differentiation and prolong product life cycle. Big Pharma also launch these kinds of products when first-in class products are rare to develop successfully. What about the payoff of these new strength、new formulation、new application route、new combination and 1st launched global generics drugs in Taiwan? According to the reference of Taiwan pharmaceutical, we evaluate them by risk-adjusted net present value (rNPV) and NPV calculation. In new strength、new formulation、new application route and new combination products strategy, the product net revenue has to be over NTD710million to achieve developmental value from initial phase 2 and 3. Such kind of candidates is hard to find out in Taiwan single market. If we reduce the marketing cost or patient numbers in clinical trial, it still not to be valuable when net revenue is NTD300million. 1st launched Global generic products are considered as available candidates in single and smaller Taiwan market because global generics only need one phase 3 generally. After rNPV calculation, the project is valuable when revenues will achieve NTD150million. If we reduce the marketing cost or patient numbers in clinical trial, it will be valuable when net revenue is over NTD 105million. Pharmaceutical companies shall be careful to check the value when developing stage prolonged and patients enrollment increased. In competition model analysis, we find out the integration between governments or policy is critical rather than the individual competition strategy. The projects will turned into un-valuable and lose the opportunities of market when governments evaluate the documents in globally highest benchmarking regulation and delay the launching schedules.

With the trend of world trade and free competition, many international industries deliver their goods by air transportation so as to improve their competition after considering shipping distance, time and quality. Taiwan took part in the World Trade Organization in 2001 to increase its competition in the world. Moreover, the structure of industries in Taiwan has been changing from labor intensive to technical intensive while many firms have moved their plants to Mainland China recently. World Air Cargo Forecast 2004/2005 by Boeing shows that the demand of air cargo will be increased up to three times in the future 20 years with an average annual growth rate of 6.2%. Many evidences indicate the importance of air freight. Past studies merely applied the discrete choice model on air carrier choice or directly analyzed the aggregate demand. Little research incorporated the demand-supply interaction into air routes and frequencies programming. This study assumes shippers in specific industry choose air cargo carrier by minimizing the total logistics cost. This study then constructs a demand model to examine how the characters of products, the urgency, shipping fare, inventory cost, shipping time and distance affect international firms’ choices on air carriers. Grey model is used to estimate the air freight demand of each industry. Considering the changes in industrial structure, this study forecasts the air cargo demands on different routes for various firms in different industries. In addition, a supply model is constructed to determinate route frequencies and the unit basic shipping charge for air carriers with demand-supply interaction. A case study is presented to illustrate the application of the proposed model using data available from C.K.S international airport and industrial economics data base in Taiwan. The results show that shippers with the shorter delivery distance put more emphasis on shipping charge. However, they will prefer choosing the air cargo carrier which offers more frequencies when their product value is high. Since the product value of goods transported from Taipei to Anchorage in US is high, therefore, shippers on this route usually emphasize on the inventory cost and choose high-frequency air cargo firms. The predicted demand using the proposed model is shown to be more accurate than those without considering the changes in industrial structure. Moreover, the proposed model is demonstrated to yield more profit than the model that does not consider demand-supply interactions. Consequently, the results of this study not only indicate that the route frequency programming model for air cargo carriers with demand-supply interaction is practicable, but also provide decision-support tools that forecast the air freight demand and profit as well as determine route frequencies and unit basic shipping charge for air cargo carriers.

This paper explores market segmentat ion and positioning analysis for container carriers by identifying the appropriate variables establishing market segments,market posi t ioning and key strengths and weaknes ses of service at t r ibutes perceived by direct accounts and NVOCC . Data for the empirical study were collected from container carriers that provide services to North America from Taiwan and consisted of perceived satisfact ion and importance for container carrier service attributes. Factor analysis was initially per formed to categorize service attributes of container carrier into two under lying latent factors including service performance & quality, ocean freight Oriented group , Cluster analys is fur ther divided the direct accounts an d NVOCC(customers) into two distinct market segments . This study analyzes the choice behaviors of travelers and formulates the models of airport market boundaries for competing city-pair services by assuming that travelers choose the airport with the minimum general- ized travel cost; airlines'' objection functions whose arguments are profit- maximizing frequencies and fares are also formulated. The models results show that improving airlines'' operating efficiency in one airport could expand its market size. Increase on average speed or decrease on average cost for airport access modes will make the market area of the larger airport expand toward the smaller one. In addition, when airlines in one airport raise their service levels to increase the load factor ,the market share of the airport could increase.

Full textThe goal of the present project is to study a problem given by the group Sociedade Central de Cerveja S.A. about the brand Desperados. The problem is the low conversion rate from the percentage of people that already tried the beer Desperados versus the percentage of people that consume it regularly. After the problem is described, the data analysis was done, divided in two parts: In the first part, the internal data analysis, about the group Sociedade Central de Cervejas S.A. and the brand Desperados – such as the strategy and position, the consumer and the performance in the market. Still in the first part it is included an external analysis – in terms of macro-environment, by means of PESTE analysis, and in terms of micro-environment, resorting to analysis of the market and of the competitors. For the second part of the data analysis, the first stage was to develop an online questionnaire both for the target and potential target of the brand, 18-30 years old, so as to complement, with primary data, the studies given by the company. With the questionnaire results and the studies given by the company, the data was analysed and the most relevant results for the problem shown as: beer consumption in Portugal; Desperados consumption in Portugal; The Desperados image and consumer. Also and in a qualitative way, two different night-out routes were analysed: for the 18-24 and 25-34 years old. After the analysis, there were drawn the main conclusions and recommendations.
O presente projeto tem como objetivo estudar um problema colocado pelo grupo Sociedade Central de Cerveja S.A. sobre a marca Desperados. O problema colocado é a baixa taxa de conversão de percentagem de consumidores que já experimentaram a cerveja Desperados versus a percentagem de consumidores que a consomem regularmente. Após o problema colocado, procedeu-se à construção e análise de dados. Divido em duas partes: Na primeira parte, a análise de dados internos, sobre o grupo Sociedade Central de Cerveja S.A. e sobre a marca Desperados, como a estratégia e posicionamento, o consumidor da marca e a performance no mercado. Ainda nesta fase foi feita uma análise externa – ao nível do macro-ambiente, através da análise PESTE, e ao nível micro-ambiente, com a análise de mercado e da concorrência. Para a segunda parte da análise de dados, a primeira fase foi desenvolver um questionário online, para o target e target potencial da marca, 18 – 30 anos, de forma a complementar, com dados primários, os estudos fornecidos pela a empresa. Com o questionário respondido e os estudos fornecidos pela empresa, foram analisados os dados e apresentados os resultados mais relevantes para o problema em causa: O consumo de cerveja em Portugal; O consumo de Desperados em Portugal; A imagem e o consumidor de Desperados. Também, e numa vertente mais qualitativa, foram analisados duas night out routes diferentes: Para o target 18-24 anos e 25-34 anos. Após a análise, foram tiradas as principais conclusões e recomendações.
