Abstract:
We examine how organizations select some routines to be changed, but not others, during organizational search. Selection is a critical step that links an exogenous trigger for change, change in individual routines, and larger processes of organizational adaptation. Drawing on participant observation of an initiative to improve perioperative efficiency in seven Ontario hospitals, we find that organizational roles shape selection by influencing both politics and frames in organizational search. Roles shape politics by defining the role-specific goals of the people who have authority to change a routine. Organizations will not select a routine for change unless at least some elites—people with role-based authority—frame the existing routine as negatively affecting their role-specific goals. Roles also shape individuals’ frames. Because people are only partially exposed to interdependencies between routines in their day-to-day work, they may not be fully aware of the diverse impact that an existing routine can have on their goals. Proponents for change can use strategic framing to focus attention on interdependencies between routines to get elites to better see how an existing routine negatively affects their goals. They can also change elites’ goals by using strategic framing to focus attention on new and broader goals that the change in routine would promote.

Abstract:
BackgroundAttention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) symptoms and autistic traits often occur together. The pattern and etiology of co-occurrence are largely unknown, particularly in adults. This study investigated the co-occurrence between both traits in detail, and subsequently examined the etiology of the co-occurrence, using two independent adult population samples.MethodData on ADHD traits (Inattention and Hyperactivity/Impulsivity) were collected in a population sample (S1, n = 559) of unrelated individuals. Data on Attention Problems (AP) were collected in a population-based family sample of twins and siblings (S2, n = 560). In both samples five dimensions of autistic traits were assessed (social skills, routine, attentional switching, imagination, patterns).ResultsHyperactive traits (S1) did not correlate substantially with the autistic trait dimensions. For Inattention (S1) and AP (S2), the correlations with the autistic trait dimensions were low, apart from a prominent correlation with the attentional switching scale (0.47 and 0.32 respectively). Analyses in the genetically informative S2 revealed that this association could be explained by a shared genetic factor.ConclusionsOur findings suggest that the co-occurrence of ADHD traits and autistic traits in adults is not determined by problems with hyperactivity, social skills, imagination or routine preferences. Instead, the association between those traits is due primarily to shared attention-related problems (inattention and attentional switching capacity). As the etiology of this association is purely genetic, biological pathways involving attentional control could be a promising focus of future studies aimed at unraveling the genetic causes of these disorders.

Abstract:
The use of the preposition à ‘at’ involving ‘social routines’ gave rise to less attention than its locative use in the linguistic literature on space. In this paper, we highlight the main properties of this use of the preposition –‘functional’ expression of an activity or state, neutrality to number, possible lack of reference to a landmark/ground entity– by successively examining landmark nouns that refer to ‘objects’ and to ‘locations’. On this basis, we then sketch out the semantic mechanism which, according to us, seems to underlie this interpretation of the preposition à. Finally, we parallel this semantic functioning with that of bare singular nouns and incorporated nominals as recently described in the literature.

Surveillance, whether active or passive, is a dynamic process. It is fundamental to public health decision-making and subsequent action. Choice of diseases for surveillance, development of methods, ongoing systematic evaluation and dissemination to those who need to know, are each components which require expert, knowledgeable attention. The communication age will greatly redefine approaches to surveillance, both for data acquisition and dissemination. Especially in the dissemination area, the public health community needs to strengthen its capacity

Abstract:
We preconceived that uncertainty and the need to discover new framing concepts would frequently face school decision-makers trying to significantly alter their domain. In contrast, however, we found that familiar administrative mechanisms were used to channel consideration of a major decision—that of the computerization of the curriculum. These familiar administrative mechanisms were used in combination with inspired use of language to reinforce the routine frame. Thus, for organizational participants, the very routineness symbolized the unexceptional nature of a change that might otherwise have aroused considerably more attention.

Abstract:
It was hypothesized that a concentration routine intervention would have a significant positive effect on the performance of intercollegiate golfers. A concentration routine consisted of a preshot and a postshot routine. In addition, this study predicted that a positive relationship would exist between routine execution and golf performance. The seven members of an NCAA Division I female golf team participated in this study. A one-way factorial design with repeated measures on multiple dependent variables tested the effects of the treatment among three time-frames. The three timeframes were: (a) Pre-treatment, which consisted of the four tournaments prior to the intervention; (b) Treatment-one, which consisted of the three tournaments immediately following the Introduction and Implementation Phases of the intervention; and (c) Treatment-two, which consisted of the three tournaments immediately following treatment-one. The results indicated that the treatment had a significant effect on golf performance. Subsequent discriminant function analyses and univariate F-tests revealed that scoring differential -- score minus the course rating -- contributed most to the difference in overall golf performance and exhibited a significant treatment effect. On the other hand, (a) percentage of fairways hit, (b) percentage of greens hit in regulation, (c) percentage of up-and-downs, and (d) number of putts per round revealed no significant treatment effect. A Least Significant Difference (LSD) post hoc test indicated that: (a) Scoring differential increased significantly from pre-treatment to treatment-one; (b) Scoring differential decreased significantly from treatment-one to treatment-two; and (c) Scoring differential decreased significantly from pre-treatment to treatment-two. A multivariate multiple regression found a significant relationship between routine execution and golf performance. The canonical correlation coefficient (Rc), combined with the canonical correlation coefficient squared (Rc2 ), revealed that a majority of the variance between the sets was shared. Additional canonical correlation analyses indicated that a portion of the variance in the individual measures of golf performance was explained by a linear composite of routine execution. Therefore, for this sample of golfers, it was asserted that routine execution was a significant contributor to golf performance.

Abstract:
This article reports a systematic clinical case study of the psychological assessment and treatment of Daniel (9), a coloured South African boy with a diagnosis of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) (inattentive type). The case is of scientific interest because: (1) there was only a single treatment session, in which contingency management training was delivered to Daniel’s parents and teacher; (2) there was evidence for the effectiveness of the intervention immediately and at two-year follow-up; (3) it documents the transportability to a South African context of an intervention developed by overseas research; (4) it documents the central role of case formulation in the delivery of effective psychological interventions; and (5) although Daniel met the criteria for ADHD, he also displayed symptoms of depression and social anxiety and the case supports the use of a transdiagnostic approach to case formulation. The conscientiousness with which his parents and teachers applied the programme was a major factor in the effectiveness of the intervention, and such rapid impact would not be possible where parents and teachers are unavailable or not co-operative. The publication of systematic case studies such as this one is important for the development of a local evidence-based practice in South Africa.

Abstract:
Augmented Reality (AR) is a technology that adds a virtual layer to the physical world. The most promising future for AR is in personal computing. Several studies have found that the usage of AR guidance leads to problems with attention to objects that are not directly addressed by the AR guidance. This study explore how AR guidance affects route learning. To do so, a Mobile Augmented Reality application for navigation was developed. The application was developed for Android using ARCore and Sceneform API. Route learning was evaluating by comparing the performance of participants navigating using the application to a reference group that got verbal instructions for the same route. Route learning performance was measured in the participants memory for details of the route e.g. the amounts of sharp turns, specific landmarks they had seen along the route and their ability to retail where they had seen the distractions in relation to the final point of the route. The results of the study show that route learning was not noticeably different for the participants using the application compared to the participants that got verbal instructions. Using the application did not reduce the participant’s ability to navigate safely. Due to the few participants of the study the results should not be considered statistically definitive rather as trends.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to gain a better understanding of the past research that has been conducted to date on pre-shot routines in golf via a thorough review of the literature. A historical review is presented in a chronological order of research studies that have been conducted pertaining to pre-shot routines in golf over the last 40 years. From this review, the STOP S.L.O.W. GO Pre-Shot Routine Model for Golf was developed and assessed amongst college golf coaches in the United States. A total of 36 college golf coaches working at the NCAA Division I level participated in a two-round Delphi study to validate the usefulness and future utility of the STOP S.L.O.W. GO Pre-Shot Routine Model for Golf. The usefulness of the STOP S.L.O.W. GO Pre-Shot Routine Model for Golf was validated by achieving a 72.73% consensus agreement level amongst study participants. The researchers were unable to reach adequate levels of expert consensus amongst college golf coaches working at the NCAA Division I level pertaining to the future utility of the STOP S.L.O.W. GO Pre-Shot Routine Model for Golf in their golf instruction. However, it was found that future utilization rates of the model may increase if the designer of the model were to provide educational sessions to college golf coaches and members of their college golf team. Practitioners and researchers are encouraged to further examine the efficacy and future adoption rates of the STOP S.L.O.W. GO Pre-Shot Routine Model for Golf amongst golfers of all ability levels. In addition, a study examining the real adoption and utilization rates of college golf coaches working at the Division I level is encouraged upon the completion of face-to-face educational sessions by a researcher who has expertise in the area of pre-shot routines in golf.

Abstract:
The aim of the present project is to provide a better understanding of how safety messages can control drivers' vulnerable road user detection abilities. Safety messages provide both vulnerability information and elicit emotion with persons that are exposed to it. This thesis deals with how vulnerability information and emotions respectively affect vulnerable road user detection performances. A special focus was placed on cyclists because of the lack of studies that address cyclist detetcion issues. The project also focused on physiology, especially emotion identification through physiological patterns

Abstract:
The proposed survey appears in the setting of the research concerned with the fluctuations of the attention performance in transportation and more precisely in driving conduct. It has for objective to show, in a developmentale and differential perspective, the impact of the moment of the day on road accidents and the attention performance and of conduct, according to age, sex and typology morning-evening. In order to be able to conduct the identification of the performances, 84 occasional drivers of light vehicles, of which 42 men and 42 women, are distributed in thee groups of age (young (20-29 years), adults (30-59 years) and aged (more than 60 years)) and according to their preferential timetables of sleep (typology morning-evening). These drivers are, in the same way to tests of attention (dam of numbers), submitted to tests of simulated conduct, at different moments of the day: the beginning and end of the morning, the beginning and end of the afternoon. The results indicate that the daily performance attention and of conduct (subscripted by the time of reaction to braking) fluctuate differently according to age, sex and typology, and that the middle levels of the attention and the times of reaction to braking decrease with age. The moment of the day, through a statistical study (accidents of the road occurred in metropolitan France to January 1st, 2007), seems to have a differential effect also on road accidents: the drivers are more frequently victims of accidents during the day than the night; on the other hand, the indication of gravity seems more accentuated at night. However, if young drivers aged from 20 to 29 years and middle age drivers (30 to 59 years) are more frequently victims of accidents than oldes people, these, on the other hand, are overrepresented in the fatal accidents. Women are less victims of accidents and remain the less exposed. Finally, the description of the daily evolution of the attention performance and that of conduct indicates a relation between the level of attention and the time of reaction at the end of the morning and the beginning of the afternoon. These results complete the reflections led on the auspicious moments for good driving and permit to underline the major place of age and the typology of the drivers in the cause of the accidents

Nee, Mélanie. "Les défauts d'attention dans la survenue de traumatismes non intentionnels." Thesis, Bordeaux, 2018. http://www.theses.fr/2018BORD0212/document.

Abstract:
Attention is a complex process that is required in almost all our daily activities. Beyond its natural fluctuation during the day, our level of attention is also influenced by a large range of factors that can diminish our level of alertness (e.g. medicines, alcohol use) or divert our attention (e.g. mobile phone, thoughts) thus exposing us to the occurrence of unintentional injuries. In road traffic safety, attention failures have been identified as a major cause of concern but questions remain unsolved. What about attentional failures in the occurrence of daily-life injuries ? The aim of this thesis was to explore the role of attention failures on the risk of unintentional injuries. The idea was to explore epidemiological issues that remained unresolved in road traffic injuries while extending the problematic to those lesser-known injuries that are Home and Leisure Injuries (HLIs). To that end, this thesis was divided in three parts. First, we investigated the association between medicine use and the risk of road traffic injuries among pedestrians. To do that, we used data on road traffic crashes collected by the French police forces matching with data on reimbursed medicine from the French Health insurance. In a second part, we were interested in several types of driving distractions on the risk of road traffic crashes using data from a sample of road users interviewed at the Bordeaux University Hospital. The third and final part was to study the role of attentional failures on the occurrence of HLIs and was based on data from a prospective and online cohort on HLIs. Attentional failures were studied from the perspective of mind-wandering as a trait measured through a questionnaire and also the implementation of three online neuropsychological tests. Several medicine classes, including benzodiazepines, were associated with an increased risk of being involved in a road traffic crash as a pedestrian. In the study on distracted driving, the higher risk was found for visual distraction. Finally, whereas neuropsychological test scores were not associated with a higher risk of HLI, mind-wandering trait was associated with a higher risk of sport, leisure and moving-related injuries. This work provides essential insights into issues that have remained unexplored to date. Beyond the drivers and road risk, our results indicate that attentional failures could also present a risk for pedestrians as well as for the occurrence of other everyday injuries. In years, to come, the share of attentional failures in the occurrence of injuries is expected to further increase, particularly due to the increasing use of new technologies in our daily live. Therefore, a better understanding of the role of these attentional failures in the occurrence of unintentional injuries is more than ever essential

Abstract:
The monograph examines the problems that play an important role in the processes of constructing transport geostrategies on the Eurasian continent. In the processes of redrawing the world's spaces, the transport sphere (along with financial and information) often acts as a catalyst for modern transformations. It is emphasized that thanks to transport networks, the economy on a global scale is structured in a completely specific way. To increase the potential of any state and society (the peoples living in it), the creation of conditions for communication community (in the broadest sense) is an integral component of its sustainability. The thesis is proved that the direction of the flow of many global integration or disintegration processes corresponding to the new world conditions depends on the reliable and fast operation of transport communications. Special attention is paid to the concept of the modern Chinese state "One Belt , One Road", which the Chinese elite actively promotes in the external space. Some aspects of the economic and transport development of the Arctic region in the context of the functioning of the Northern Sea Route are considered. Due attention is paid to the special role of Central Asia in the context of these problems, as well as the implementation of the international transport project "North - South". For students and teachers, as well as for anyone interested in economics and politics.

Abstract:
This chapter provides a summary of a landmark study in child and adolescent psychiatry. What is the most effective long-term management strategy in children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder: medication management, behavioral treatment, a combination of medication management and behavioral treatment, or routine community care? Starting with that question, it describes the basics of the study, including funding, study location, who was studied, how many patients, study design, study intervention, follow-up, endpoints, results, and criticism and limitations. The chapter briefly reviews other relevant studies and information, discusses implications, and concludes with a relevant clinical case.

Abstract:
This chapter covers the spectrum of routine monitoring, audit, service evaluation, and formal research. Routine monitoring is an essential task for all mental health professionals, and techniques to make it more palatable are explored, including using routine data for clinical supervision and monitoring team targets. Regular audit is described as an essential tool for logical service development and quality improvement. In the discussion of research, the importance of choosing the correct methodology and of paying attention to detail are stressed. In community psychiatry, sampling bias, regression to the mean, and the Hawthorne effect pose important risks. The hierarchy of research methods is outlined with randomized controlled trials (RCTs) at the top, preferably with either single- or double-blinding. Careful statistics and systematic reviews support evidence-based practice. In addition to experimental quantitative trials, there is a place for cohort and case control trials, as well as for qualitative trials to generate hypotheses.

Implementation science in health care comprises over 30 years of rich and varied activity that has developed, refined, and applied implementation science concepts, theories, and research approaches. This body of activity has produced valuable empirical findings and has contributed to the continued development of the broader field of implementation science. This chapter describes key stages in the development and evolution of implementation science in health care. It discusses key settings, evidence-based practices, and implementation strategies studied by health care implementation researchers and examines key challenges and future directions in the field. Continued growth in health care implementation science will require expanded attention to sustainment, scale-up, and spread of effective health care practices and attention to the study of routine, naturally-occurring implementation processes in addition to experimental evaluation of investigator-led implementation.

Abstract:
This chapter discusses the development path of the dynamic capabilities construct, calling attention to two ways in which the path has become bifurcated. In particular it pays attention to the widening chasm between Teece’s original conception of dynamic capabilities and his revised conception, as expressed in some of his more recent works. The roots of these divergent, and yet theoretically consequential understandings are explored, as are the ways they have developed in the literature: the need to reconcile the routine nature of dynamic capabilities on the one hand with the need to account for the ability of organizations to intentionally alter their resource base on the other. The chapter argues that such a reconciliation is possible, once a process (or performative) approach is adopted. In particular, the authors argue that in so far as capabilities fully exist in performance, each particular performance may enact capabilities differently over time and in particular contexts.

Abstract:
Coady speaks compellingly of the hazards of humanitarian moralism. Coady’s corrective to those hazards calls for attending to the immediate political context but neglects how human rights (HR) not only engages with a political context external to it, but is itself deploying and negotiating power. Thus his discussion of the HR/humanitarianism merger renders this confluence as background to, rather than constitutive of, those hazards. From the 1990s the international community paid less attention to routine HR, and focused increasingly on HR in the context of humanitarian crisis. This shift’s impacts include: inflecting HR in those contexts with a depoliticizing humanitarian morality; treating HR engagements as episodic injections in moments of disaster with politics displaced by the moral urgency of catastrophe, rather than as engagements with the routine and structural; translating HR into an export product with engagements activated not by our rights but “theirs” — thus intervening in, even disregarding, local populations in name of their HR. If we don’t take into account these larger stakes re. the politics of HR and humanitarianism, the prudence that modifies moralism functions to complement rather than counter, with ethics and expertise travelling hand in hand to couple moralism and prudence to rescue “better”.

Routine radiographs are not cost effective in the intensive care unit (ICU) setting. Most published guidelines agree that radiographs are worthwhile after insertion of tubes or catheters, and in patients receiving mechanical ventilation. Otherwise, they are required only for change in the patient’s clinical status. Picture archiving and communication systems utilize digital imaging technology. They provide superior quality images, rapid image availability at multiple sites, and fewer repeat examinations, reducing both cost and patient radiation. Disadvantages of picture archiving and communication systems include expensive equipment and personnel required to keep them functioning. The majority of chest X-ray abnormalities in the ICU are best understood by paying careful attention to the initial appearance of the X-ray in relation to the patient’s onset of symptoms and the progression of abnormalities over the next few days.

When patients conclude active cancer therapy, many experience an elevated degree of awareness and worry about disease recurrence. For most patients, this anxiety is intermittent and tolerable, but for others, it is quite disruptive. Patients’ psychological and cognitive difficulties are not systematically explored during routine medical visits. Receiving the news of cancer recurrence is enormously difficult and so is the disclosure of news for the oncologist. The chapter provides practical tips for disclosing prognostic information. Physicians can and should pay particular attention to patients’ overall quality of life, rather than focusing solely on the medical reality, and strive to balance their own communicative preferences and strategies with the needs of their patients, tailoring their process of disclosing news of recurrence to patients’ expressed preferences in order to facilitate coping and sustain the therapeutic alliance.

Abstract:
Human rights are a common feature of police reform, rhetoric and regulation in many jurisdictions. Yet how human rights law might serve to regulate policing, function as a discourse for describing what police ‘do’ or perform as a critical concept for engaging with what the police role is, or ought to be, has received limited attention. This book is an endeavour to produce one of the first sustained, interdisciplinary accounts of the empirical realities of human rights law in policing. The substantive insights are drawn from unprecedented access to the Police Service of Northern Ireland. The book takes the reader on a tour of four sites of policing: the public forums host to ‘official’ police narratives, routine policing, public order policing and police custody. It seeks to better understand how and why police officers performing different aspects of policing, operating in distinct regulatory sites and enacting their own identities and experiences, come to encounter and engage with human rights law in their everyday work. The book aspires to embrace criminology’s interdisciplinary spirit, drawing on concepts from criminology itself, as well as law, anthropology, sociology and organizational studies, to illuminate the empirical realities of human rights law. It offers a series of findings and insights that expose how human rights law functions in modern policing, and the histories, imaginations, visions and values police officers’ express in narratives, sensemaking and practices of routine police work.

AbstractAnimal footprints are preserved in the archaeological record with greater frequency than perhaps previously assumed. This assertion is supported by a rapid increase in the number of discoveries in recent years. The analysis of such trace fossils is now being undertaken with an increasing sophistication, and a methodological revolution is afoot linked to the routine deployment of 3D digital capture. Much of this development has in recent years been driven by palaeontologists, yet archaeologists are just as likely to encounter footprints in excavations. It is therefore timely to review some of the key methodological developments and to focus attention on the inferences that can and, crucially, cannot be justifiably made from fossil footprints with specific reference to human tracks.

Abstract:
AbstractIn locally advanced squamous cell carcinoma of the head and neck, adding three cycles of high-dose (100 mg/m2) cisplatin every three weeks to definitive or adjuvant radiotherapy can significantly improve locoregional control and survival. One of the major drawbacks is severe acute toxicity with about 40% of patients developing mucositis, up to one fourth suffering from dysphagia, and at least 20% having bone marrow suppression. Late toxicity has been under- and sometimes mis-reported and may even be responsible for an increase in non-cancer-related deaths in long-term survivors. Moreover, efficacy outcomes are still not satisfactory with 5-year overall survival rates ranging between 40% and 50%, excluding the growing minority of human papillomavirus-related oropharyngeal cancer cases with a markedly better prognosis. Consequently, alternative regimens have gained attention with the aim to reduce toxicity, improve adherence, and maintain adequate anti-tumour activity. Low-dose (usually 40 mg/m2) cisplatin given in weekly intervals emerged as the preferred alternative to the standard, high-dose regimen. But do we have enough evidence to support this approach and which patients might become suitable candidates? While the use of high-dose cisplatin is supported by the results of four large trials randomizing altogether 1539 patients between conventionally fractionated chemoradiation and radiotherapy alone, there are only three small, similarly designed but possibly biased studies favouring a weekly regimen. In addition, two other trials randomly assigning patients to receive either high-dose or low-dose cisplatin, provided evidence against routine administration of the latter schedule. Therefore, although weekly cisplatin may enhance short-term tolerance in terms of gastro-intestinal, hepatic, hearing, renal, and haematological side effects, it cannot be excluded that this improvement comes at the price of compromised survival with no benefit in late adverse events. We acknowledge that certain clinical scenarios, particularly in the presence of relative contraindications to high-dose cisplatin, may favour a less toxic cisplatin dose and/or administration schedule, among which the low-dose weekly regimen. In this respect, the ever-growing population of elderly patients is in particular benefitting from a careful decision, taking into account the pros and cons of such regimens.

Abstract:
Knowledge graph embedding is an essential problem in knowledge extraction. Recently, translation based embedding models (e.g., TransE) have received increasingly attentions. These methods try to interpret the relations among entities as translations from head entity to tail entity and achieve promising performance on knowledge graph completion. Previous researchers attempt to transform the entity embedding concerning the given relation for distinguishability. Also, they naturally think the relation-related transforming should reflect attention mechanism, which means it should focus on only a part of the attributes. However, we found previous methods are failed with creating attention mechanism, and the reason is that they ignore the hierarchical routine of human cognition. When predicting whether a relation holds between two entities, people first check the category of entities, then they focus on fined-grained relation-related attributes to make the decision. In other words, the attention should take effect on entities filtered by the right category. In this paper, we propose a novel knowledge graph embedding method named TransAt to learn the translation based embedding, relation-related categories of entities and relation-related attention simultaneously. Extensive experiments show that our approach outperforms state-of-the-art methods significantly on public datasets, and our method can learn the true attention varying among relations.

The research was implemented within the framework of the University of Latvia master’s study program “Pedagogy” course “Effective classroom management”. During the action research, the researchers identified group management problems in music lessons at educational institution X, in group Y. Key problem identified was the insufficient attention of children at the beginning of the lesson. The research proceeded to also look for possible solutions. The aim is to analyse current methods of delivering effective music classes in a pre-school setting, and propose and validate new strategies to improve the beginning of a music lesson. The study involved 17 preschool children (11 boys and 6 girls), a music teacher, and two group teachers, and an observer. The study was conducted from October 2019 to March 2020. The first results of the action research show that as the teacher changed her classroom activities, introduced certain group management techniques, such as signalling and acoustic counting, and repeating these as a routine activity in each lesson, children’s attention improved significantly at the beginning of the music lesson and became more sustained.

Cold Reheat Piping in power plants has received little attention for many years. Carbon Steel piping that handles steam at 500 F to 700 F has only had problems when not properly supported or water hammered on start up. Most recorded failures have been mechanical fatigue at a girth weld. Excessive attemperation in both coal fired plants and combined cycle ones, has become a routine practice. Consequently the number of failures (catastrophic or non-catastrophic) in Cold Reheat Piping have occurred in recent years. Most of these recent failures can be traced back to water hammer or a thermal shock due to changes in the operation of attemperator sprays. This paper shows how a Cold Reheat Piping system, that was included in a nondestructive test program, failed in a short period of time due to thermal fatigue, from a change in spray operation.

Abstract:
Vibration is an undesirable phenomenon in engineering, and its avoidance has received considerable attention, especially for the cases of precision engineering. Since the dynamic performance of precision mechanisms are most likely to be restricted by their 1st modes, multiple single degree of freedom (SDOF) tuned mass dampers (TMDs) are designed to suppress a translational moving platform with single mode. The TMDs are designed with optimal stiffness and damping ratios, which are acquired by numerical optimization using minimax algorithm. Each SDOF TMD is implemented via the graphical approach and modeled by substructure dynamic modeling techniques. Results of finite element analysis (FEA) show that the maximum amplitude of frequency response function (FRF) of the primary system can be damped to 89.14% when N is 3, which validates the vibration mitigation by employing the designed TMDs. Furthermore, the proposed design routine provides a guidance for implementation of multiple SDOF TMDs.

Abstract:
Abstract In the physical design of integrated circuits, global and detailed routing are critical stages involving the determination of the interconnected paths of each net on a circuit while satisfying the design constraints. Existing actual routers as well as routability predictors either have to resort to expensive approaches that lead to high computational times, or use heuristics that do not generalize well. Even though new, learning-based routing methods have been proposed to address this need, requirements on labelled data and difficulties in addressing complex design rule constraints have limited their adoption in advanced technology node physical design problems. In this work, we propose a new router — attention router, which is the first attempt to solve the track-assignment detailed routing problem by applying reinforcement learning. Complex design rule constraints are encoded into the routing algorithm and an attention-model-based REINFORCE algorithm is applied to solve the most critical step in routing: sequencing device pairs to be routed. The attention router and its baseline genetic router are applied to solve different commercial advanced technologies analog circuits problem sets. The attention router demonstrates generalization ability to unseen problems and is also able to achieve more than 100× acceleration over the genetic router without severely compromising the routing solution quality. Increasing the number of training problems greatly improves the performance of attention router. We also discover a similarity between the attention router and the baseline genetic router in terms of positive correlations in cost and routing patterns, which demonstrate the attention router’s ability to be utilized not only as a detailed router but also as a predictor for routability and congestion.

Abstract The inspection method based on risk was studied about 23 large tanks of a national strategic oil reserve base, which was a relatively large research work, because the tank inspection was a non-statutory inspection that received little attention, and the risk assessment method of large oil storage tanks in the actual project application was not mature enough. The basic information of 23 nominal volume one hundred thousand cubic meters crude oil tank was collected and sorted. 23 storage tanks under the application of risk assessment are all aboveground atmospheric storage tanks. 23 storage tanks are all floating-roof tanks, whose host materials include SPV490Q, 16MnR, Q235-B, and Q235-A; the containing medium for storage tank are crude oil, and time-to-use starts from August 2006 to April 2007. The implementation process of tank risk assessment was described, and the process of implementing risk assessment was described in detail. The method of risk trend analysis is studied, and the routine maintenance and maintenance suggestions are given. The results show that the risk assessment method for the tank can be implemented, and has been recognized by the tank management unit, providing a rare real case.

Abstract:
The stimuli for consumption is present in everyday life, where major retail companies play a role in providing a large range of products every single day. Using sonification techniques, we present a listening experiment of Portuguese consumption habits in the course of ten days, gathered from a Portuguese retail company. We focused on how to represent this time-series data as a musical piece that would engage the listener’s attention and promote an active listening attitude, exploring the influence of aesthetics in the perception of auditory displays. Through a phenomenological approach, ten participants were interviewed to gather perceptions evoked by the piece, and how the consumption variations were un-derstood. The tested composition revealed relevant associations about the data, with the consumption context indirectly present throughout the emerging themes: from the idea of everyday life, routine and consumption peaks to aesthetic aspects as the passage of time, frenzy and consumerism. Documentary, movie imagery and soundtrack were also perceived. Several musical aspects were also mentioned, as the constant, steady rhythm and the repetitive nature of the composition, and sensations such as pleasantness, sat-isfaction, annoyance, boredom and anxiety. These collected topics convey the incessant feeling and consumption needs which portray our present society, offering new paths for comprehending musical sound perception and consequent exploration.

Abstract:
To improve the efficiency of Darrieus wind turbines, which still lacks from that of horizontal-axis rotors, Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) techniques are now extensively applied, since they only provide a detailed and comprehensive flow representation. Their computational cost makes them, however, still prohibitive for routine application in the industrial context, which still makes large use of low-order simulation models like the Blade Element Momentum (BEM) theory. These models have been shown to provide relatively accurate estimations of the overall turbine performance; conversely, the description of the flow field suffers from the strong approximations introduced in the modelling of the flow physics. In the present study, the effectiveness of the simplified BEM approach was critically benchmarked against a comprehensive description of the flow field past the rotating blades coming from the combination of a two-dimensional unsteady CFD model and experimental wind tunnel tests; for both data sets, the overall performance and the wake characteristics on the mid plane of a small-scale H-shaped Darrieus turbine were available. Upon examination of the flow field, the validity of the ubiquitous use of induction factors is discussed, together with the resulting velocity profiles upstream and downstream the rotor. Particular attention is paid on the actual flow conditions (i.e. incidence angle and relative speed) experienced by the airfoils in motion at different azimuthal angles, for which a new procedure for the post-processing of CFD data is here proposed. Based on this model, the actual lift and drag coefficients produced by the airfoils in motion are analyzed and discussed, with particular focus on dynamic stall. The analysis highlights the main critical issues and flaws of the low-order BEM approach, but also sheds new light on the physical reasons why the overall performance prediction of these models is often acceptable for a first-design analysis.

The main recommendations of the panel report can be summarised under four key headings:  High quality, high impact research: the importance of archaeological science is reflected in work that explores issues connected to important contemporary topics, including: the demography of, the nature of movement of, and contact between peoples; societal resilience; living on the Atlantic edge of Europe; and coping with environmental and climatic change. A series of large-scale and integrated archaeological science projects are required to stimulate research into these important topics. To engage fully with Science in Scottish Archaeology iv these questions data of sufficient richness is required that is accessible, both within Scotland and internationally. The RCAHMS’ database Canmore provides a model for digital dissemination that should be built on.  Integration: Archaeological science should be involved early in the process of archaeological investigation and as a matter of routine. Resultant data needs to be securely stored, made accessible and the research results widely disseminated. Sources of advice and its communication must be developed and promoted to support work in the commercial, academic, research, governmental and 3rd sectors.  Knowledge exchange and transfer: knowledge, data and skills need to be routinely transferred and embedded across the archaeological sector. This will enable the archaeological science community to better work together, establishing routes of communication and improving infrastructure. Improvements should be made to communication between different groups including peers, press and the wider public. Mechanisms exist to enable the wider community to engage with, and to feed into, the development of the archaeological and scientific database and to engage with current debates. Projects involving the wider community in data generation should be encouraged and opportunities for public engagement should be pursued through, for example, National Science Week and Scottish Archaeology Month.  Networks and forums: A network of specialists should be promoted to aid collaboration, provide access to the best advice, and raise awareness of current work. This would be complemented by creating a series inter-disciplinary working groups, to discuss and articulate archaeological science issues. An online service to match people (i.e. specialist or student) to material (whether e.g. environmental sample, artefactual assemblage, or skeletal assemblage) is also recommended. An annual meeting should also be held at which researchers would be able to promote current and future work, and draw attention to materials available for analysis, and to specialists/students looking to work on particular assemblages or projects. Such meetings could be rolled into a suitable public outreach event.

Abstract:
The learning crisis in many developing countries has led to searches for innovative teaching models. Adoption of innovation, however, disrupts routine and breaks institutional inertia, requiring government employees to change their way of working. Introducing and embedding innovative methods for improving learning outcomes within state institutions is thus a major challenge. For NGO-led innovation to have largescale impact, we need to understand: (1) what factors facilitate its adoption by senior bureaucracy and political elites; and (2) how to incentivise district-level field staff and school principals and teachers, who have to change their ways of working, to implement the innovation? This paper presents an ethnographic study of Pratham, one of the most influential NGOs in the domain of education in India today, which has attracted growing attention for introducing an innovative teaching methodology— Teaching at the Right Level (TaRL) – with evidence of improved learning outcomes among primary-school students and adoption by a number of states in India. The case study suggests that while a combination of factors, including evidence of success, ease of method, the presence of a committed bureaucrat, and political opportunity are key to state adoption of an innovation, exposure to ground realities, hand holding and confidence building, informal interactions, provision of new teaching resources, and using existing lines of communication are core to ensuring the co-operation of those responsible for actual implementation. The Pratham case, however, also confirms existing concerns that even when NGO-led innovations are successfully implemented at a large scale, their replication across the state and their sustainability remain a challenge. Embedding good practice takes time; the political commitment leading to adoption of an innovation is often, however, tied to an immediate political opportunity being exploited by the political elites. Thus, when political opportunity rather than a genuine political will creates space for adoption of an innovation, state support for that innovation fades away before the new ways of working can replace the old habits. In contexts where states lack political will to improve learning outcomes, NGOs can only hope to make systematic change in state systems if, as in the case of Pratham, they operate as semi-social movements with large cadres of volunteers. The network of volunteers enables them to slow down and pick up again in response to changing political contexts, instead of quitting when state actors withdraw. Involving the community itself does not automatically lead to greater political accountability. Time-bound donor-funded NGO projects aiming to introduce innovation, however large in scale, simply cannot succeed in bringing about systematic change, because embedding change in state institutions lacking political will requires years of sustained engagement.
