Understanding social behaviour in livestock groups requires accurate geo-spatial localisation data over time which is difficult to obtain in the field. Automated on-animal devices may provide a solution. This study introduced an Real-Time-Kinematic Global Navigation Satellite System (RTK-GNSS) localisation device (RTK rover) based on an RTK module manufactured by the company u-blox (Thalwil, Switzerland) that was assembled in a box and harnessed to sheep backs. This article examines the letter from Margaret Roper to Alice Alington, which is commonly referred to as Thomas More’s “Dialogue on Conscience.” Within this dialogue, More recites two tales, one about the man named Company, and another about how a thief tricks a magistrate. While most readers of the dialogue identify More with Company, the story about Company is merely a digression, a red herring to distract readers from his surprisingly straightforward indictment of Henry VIII. More is not Company, but rather the magistrate who has been arrested under a false law, the Act of Succession.

Sitting atop a rickety Indian bus trundling up the Beas Valley to the delightful hill station of Manali in the Kulu Valley of Himachal Pradesh, peering between swaying bodies and piles of luggage, I caught my first glimpse of the snowy peaks of the Himalaya. Yes, those white streaks way up in the sky were not, after all, clouds: they were glints of sunlight on impossibly high and steep ice-fields plastered onto the sides of mountains that tore up into the sky. It was a sight to take one’s breath away and I knew instantly that this was going to be the start of a great adventure. We were a typical shoestring British student expedition of five friends who could fit easily into two overloaded rickshaws, heading for the mountains around the Tos Glacier. Mountaineers dream about climbing in the Himalaya. Since my earliest days of climbing the hills and crags of Snowdonia and northern Scotland, I had yearned to see and climb those magical Himalayan Mountains. Now here I was, and the reality of the Himalaya was even better than I imagined. I had taken three months off from my PhD studies on the geology of the Oman Mountains to go on this expedition. We had driven a Land Rover out from England to Muscat through a snowy Europe and across the Empty Quarter of Arabia from Syria and Jordan to the United Arab Emirates and Oman. After three months’ fieldwork in Oman I caught a passenger ship, the MV Dwarka, last of the British East India Company merchant vessels that plied the Gulf route from Basra via Kuwait, Bahrain, Dubai, and Muscat to Karachi, and then travelled through Pakistan by train into India. That first expedition to Kulu was a revelation. We camped on the Tos Glacier, four days’ walk above the village of Manikarin in the Parbati Valley of eastern Kulu, for about four weeks. During that time the weather was perfect almost every day.

In addition to Marlowe, Chandler’s other veteran characters also unwittingly suffer post-traumatic symptoms, and chapter six is an exploration of the most significant of Chandler’s novels and the work that best represents his protagonist as a veteran, The Long Goodbye (1953). Examining Marlowe’s behaviour around, and attitude towards, the two veterans identified in the novel, Roger Wade and Terry Lennox, it is argued that Marlowe becomes part of a “band of brothers,” an intimate group of veterans in whose company the detective displays the undeniable evidence of his past experiences and trauma.

Ludwig Wittgenstein held a contradictory, queer position in Bloomsbury. He was in several homerotically-charged close friendships with men, including John Maynard Keynes, yet he was awkward in the cosmopolitan company of Bloomsbury and derided at Cambridge by second-generation Bloomsberry Julian Bell. Nonetheless, Wittgenstein was concerned with themes that occupied the Bloomsbury Group, such as the difficult process of making sense and the importance of aspectival perception in meaning-making – a key component of Bloomsbury thought from Roger Fry’s cubism to Virginia Woolf’s experimental fiction. Moreover, concern for the difficulties of making sense connect both Wittgenstein and Bloomsbury to contemporary queer theory’s concern for problems of intelligibility, such as Judith Butler’s. Detloff and Pohlhaus explore these themes and their importance for our perception of what Bloomsbury means today.

Chapter 3 offers a case study of the thirteenth-century scholar Roger Bacon, who contrasted the terms lingua and idioma in a way prefiguring the later language/dialect distinction. Bacon was able to do so because of his exceptionally broad intellectual and linguistic horizon; he was familiar with English, French, Latin, Greek, and other tongues, as well as the regional variation within some of them. His mastery of Greek in particular was unique in his times. His linguistic outlook was a central precondition and a triggering circumstance for his lingua / idioma distinction. Bacon was in good company, since the renowned philosopher Thomas Aquinas presupposed a similar metalinguistic contrast in his exegetical works; yet Thomas was much less explicit about it. Chapter 3 finishes with a brief exposé on biblical exegesis as an overlooked source for ancient and medieval ideas on regional variation.

Tagamet emerged as the first blockbuster drug when its sales exceeded $1 billion in 1986, three years after its introduction to the market. An anti–peptic ulcer drug, Tagamet was discovered by James W. Black and his colleagues at Smith Kline &amp; French’s (SK&amp;F) British subsidiary in Welwyn Garden City. Before Tagamet, SK&amp;F was a little-known U.S. drug firm in Philadelphia. After Tagamet, SK&amp;F became one of the largest pharmaceutical companies in the world. The history of Tagamet is one of the most extraordinary in the annals of medicine. It is a saga of a drug that almost escaped detection because the research efforts that began in 1964 did not seem to produce results within the first 11 years! Smith Kline started as a humble drug store in Philadelphia in 1830. During the American Civil War, Smith Kline was founded as a small apothecary by two physicians, John K. Smith and John Gilbert on North Second Street. Not only was Philadelphia the birthplace of the United States of America, it was also the cradle of American pharmacy. Wyeth, McNeil, Rorer, and Warner-Lambert all trace their origins to small drug stores established there during the Civil War. In the 1880s, Mahlon N. Kline led the company into research and manufacturing of its own products. In 1891, it absorbed French, Richards &amp; Co. founded by Harry B. French, creating Smith Kline &amp; French. After its establishment, the company slowly expanded its inventory. By the 1920s, it had some 15,000 products ranging from aspirin to liniment. Their Eskay’s Albumenized Food was highly popular as a digestible food for infants and the disabled. Later, the company did very well with Eskay’s Tablets for Seasickness. Its specialty, Eskay’s Neurophosphates, a nerve tonic, soothed millions of people at home and abroad. In 1929, Smith Kline &amp; French Laboratories was created to devote itself solely to research and development (R&amp;D). During the Great Depression year of 1936, the company stepped up its efforts in R&amp;D (in a recent contrast, many pharmaceutical companies stepped down their R&amp;D investments during the last recession of 2008).

Dring’s early career is traced through her commissions for BBC radio and television broadcasts, of which the most significant is The Fair Queen of Wu, a ballet for singers and chamber ensemble with choreography by Felicity Gray. During these years, her first publications appeared, with an emphasis on piano music (for solo piano and two pianos) and her Three Shakespeare Songs. Dring’s music was also performed in recitals, including her recently published piano works and a selection of her songs (published and unpublished). The most favorable reviews are found for her Festival Scherzo (“Nights in the Gardens of Battersea”), written to commemorate the Festival of Britain. Also discussed is her one-act opera, Cupboard Love, the music written for the Christmas plays produced by Angela Bull’s Cygnet Company, and her first performance as a singer at the RCM’s Union “At Home.” A fine example of Dring’s cabaret style is found in the discussion and analysis of her song, “The Lady Composer.” In her personal life, the chapter documents her marriage to Roger Lord, his career as a musician (principal oboe in the London Symphony Orchestra for thirty-three years), and the birth of her son, Jeremy.
