Abstract:
This is a thematic study of Harry Potter (1997-2007) concerning the theme of alienation. Joanne Rowling is a British novelist famous for writing her best-known fantasy book series, Harry Potter (1997-2007). This study argues that Rowling employs fantastical elements in Harry Potter to present symbolic and real-life themes that summon the postcolonial discourse of alienation. In addition, the study aims to raise the role of fantasy in serving Humanity and the dignity of people and understanding the conflicts among the members of society. Moreover, this study investigates how racial discrimination and postcolonialism work against the Humanity of heroes and their companions in their community. Therefore, that relationship causes a realistic commentary on real-life situations. The theoretical platform deployed in this study is a postcolonial perspective that purports to grasp the striking overlaps between the theme of alienation and the insights of the racial and social postcolonial discourse. The findings achieved in this paper prove the juxtaposition between alienation on the one hand and racial and social discrimination on the other hand. The researcher seeks to demonstrate that Harry Potter reflects the suffering and alienation of characters.

Abstract:
Ever since the Harry Potter books started being published, they have triggered much enthusiasm around the world be it in their original English version or in translation. Their British author, J.K. Rowling has been praised for her creativity, and especially for her linguistic inventiveness. The latter – in the first six volumes – is the subject of the present dissertation and so is its trad-aptation into foreign languages – more precisely into French and Dutch. Originally literary works for young people, these books, however, have reached a wider readership, thus becoming cross-over books. This development can be justified by the way the story is expressed – and not only on account of the diegesis itself. This research tries to analyse the various features of the languages which are used and/or invented, on the one hand, and demonstrates that one can refer to the conception of a specific literary idiolect – rowlinguism – studying the cultural references within the language itself in a first part, then the phonological quality and the humour of the text in a second part (plays on sounds and words, visual and oral descriptions, idiolects) before tackling the analysis of passages with different styles and forms. These three aspects are considered both as far as the original text is concerned as well as the foreign versions mentioned above. Indeed, translation is the very subject of the last part, based on both lexical observations on J.K. Rowling’s text and on economical and professional practices (translating, publishing, reading, re-writing). On the other hand, therefore, a conclusion had to be drawn concerning the result, namely it has been easier to translate into Dutch – a Germanic language - than into French – a Latin language – due to available linguistic resources

Abstract:
The Harry Potter books are the inheritors of several literary traditions. Both intergeneric and intertextual, they do not only belong to the category of non-realistic genres but also to the traditions of school fiction, mystery or adventure novels and initiation stories. This hybridity results in the creation of a very rich universe, teeming with inventions; all sorts of texts and writing tools are representative of this creativity. J. K. Rowling both imitates and distorts her sources, in scenes in which writing and reading play an important part. Besides, thanks to a playful and manipulative style, she invites her readers to play with their sense of deduction and memory and their literary culture. Indeed, she refers to many works of fiction and thus, proposes different ways of reading and understanding her stories. As is the case with most literary cycles, she has expanded on her fictional world in new texts, pieces of what is now called “trans-fictional” writing. J. K. Rowling and her readers also have developed the Harry Potter world, rewritten it and transferred it to new media, turning this literary work into transmedia fiction. This study focuses on the three main points mentioned, that is to say first on the part played by reading and writing in the Harry Potter books, then on the relation between the writer and her readers through her writing and on the many different ways in which the novels have been and still are being rewritten
