Will Todd, born in Durham in 1970, has an extensive output of compositions to his credit, including highly-charged operas and oratorios, largely centred around themes from northeastern England, notably the workers' struggle against early 19th and 20th-century injustice and oppression. I had heard his emotive cantata The Burning Road performed at St Albans Cathedral in February 2002 – it depicts the relentless, footsore Jarrow Marchers of 1936 who stopped in the city en route to London – and was interested to hear the follow-up in his new opera on an allied theme: The Blackened Man.

The Royal College of Surgeons of England rugby club is flourishing but needs your support. It has a very young history when compared with the United Hospitals Cup (the oldest competition, dating back to 1874 and still being played despite many amalgamations of the London teaching hospitals). Our College club was founded in 2003 to play against the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh for the Park–Parker Cup. The first game was played at the Rosslyn Park ground on the morning of the Calcutta Cup and, sadly, after suturing various parts of players' anatomy from both sides, I presented the Cup

This thesis provides a comprehensive source study of the eighteenth-century Chapel Royal partbooks (London, British Library R.M.27.a–d). The 56 manuscript volumes in this collection, which are now catalogued into four groups (or ‘sets’), were used in the daily choral services at St James’s Palace during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. The sources have a complex history since they have an ‘organic’ quality whereby the books continued to be copied into and altered whilst they were in regular use. Nor was this paradigm of madness the only oae prevailing in the classical period, Bethlem patients also being regarded (e.g.) as 'objects of charity', requiring bot

As a brother to merchants and a physician to kings during the commercial crises of the 1620s, Harvey was exposed to ways of thinking about circulation that he used to make sense of the disparate observations he made about the motion of the heart and blood. Abstract During his first year as king of England, James self-consciously performed on the stage of state and gave three major public performances, all of which reflected not only English conventions and rituals but also his own distinctive style and character. The first performance was in absentia at the planned executions of three of the Bye and Main plotters; the second was at the Hampton Court Conference summoned to settle differences between the English bishops and their critics; and the third was the magnificent royal entry into London on the eve of the opening of his first parliament.

In particular, it addresses the identity politics behind the establishment of the 15th (1st London Welsh), Royal Welch Fusiliers. It underlines how, for a cohort of male English volunteers, Wales and Welshness held some form of meaning at the point of their military enlistment.
