Abstract:
During the Hellenistic period, royal correspondence constituted a challenging mode of diplomacy for polis communities. The chapter offers a case study of how one such community, Magnesia on the Maeander, responded to the challenge. The dossier in question concerns the request of acceptance of a new contest for Artemis Leukophryene, first celebrated in 208 BCE, which Magnesia addressed to all of the Greek world. The answers from kings, leagues, and cities make it possible to compare different ‘discursive styles’, in particular the contrastive ideologies of power instantiated in the royal letter and the city-decree. In addition, Ceccarelli shows how the way in which they were set up in the agora of Magnesia affords insights into the Magnesians’ own perception of these acts of international diplomacy—and how they used the responses to project an image of a political community that was both internally cohesive and well connected with the outside world.

Manning, J. G. Cross-Cultural Communication in Egypt. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/acprof:oso/9780195386844.003.0015.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter offers a paradigmatic case of cross-cultural communication from ancient Egypt. Because it was pictographic, Egyptian hieroglyphic script combined the literary and the visual in a way that rendered communication both a priestly privilege and a royal one. It was an important public phenomenon, too, analyzed here in terms of transaction costs. Commonly applied to the study of the ancient economy, the nature and extent of transaction costs explain why and how the pharaohs made use of monuments and decrees to unify a diverse society. The use of hieroglyphics did not prevent the use of other scripts as well, and in Late Antiquity, Egypt became partly bilingual. Bilingualism, which had always existed in major ancient marketplaces and at royal courts, now became widespread.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter examines Gallican components in liturgical chants copied in Gregorian manuscripts by focusing on a group of chants for the masses for the Holy Cross. These chants, copied in manuscripts from Aquitaine, bear signs of more remote pre-Gregorian roots that can be recognized in some textual and musical features, in aspects related to their liturgical collocation, and in the theological arguments they contain. Before undertaking an analysis of specific examples, the chapter first considers the extent to which royal decrees influenced chant practices in Carolingian and post-Carolingian Europe by contextualizing the process of standardization of chant within the projects of cultural reform of the Carolingians and the Merovingians. It then discusses issues of persistence and change in the transmission of liturgical repertories as well as the role of music censorship in the practice of liturgical chant.

Haubold, Johannes. Converging Perspectives on Antiochos III. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198805663.003.0006.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter compares three texts about the Seleukid monarch Antiochos III: a decree of the Seleukid Greek city of Teos published shortly before the king’s war with Rome; a description of his conduct of the war written by the pro-Roman historian Polybios; and a cuneiform text from Babylon about Antiochos’ visit to the city just after the war. I argue that, despite differences in style, cultural background, historical context, and political allegiance, these texts converge around key themes of Seleukid imperial discourse, such as the king as benefactor and the importance of the royal couple. The chapter thus serves as a corrective to recent scholarship that tends to stress the differences between Greek and non-Greek perspectives on the Seleukid kings.

Abstract:
This chapter discusses the law of set-off in Spain. Under Spanish law, set-off represents a means of extinguishing an obligation between a debtor and a creditor. Set-off occurs mainly as a form of payment rather than a guarantee. The chapter first considers set-off between solvent parties, focusing on the requirements of statutory set-off, set-off in case of assignment of credit rights, and set-off as a mechanism for creating security interests. It then examines set-off against insolvent parties, with emphasis on the scope of the prohibition set out in Article 58 of the Insolvency Act regarding set-off against an insolvent debtor and whether there are exceptions to this prohibition. The chapter also analyses set-off in financial transactions subject to Royal Decree Law 5/2005, along with cross-border situations relating to set-off against insolvent parties and choice of law with respect to set-off between solvent parties.

Gotman, Kélina. The Convulsionaries. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780190840419.003.0005.

Full text
Abstract:
Convulsions in the eighteenth century were subject not only to intense medical and religious debate but also to theatrical ridicule. Following the death of François de Pâris, a popular figure in Jansenist debates on papal intercession in France, convulsions and miracles began to take place around his tomb. This led to a spate of theatrical spoofs and street-level entertainment by the so-called Convulsionaries of Saint-Médard, unsuccessfully suppressed by the royal authorities. Convulsions, which came to represent excess emotion and exaggerated identification with national causes, were wrapped up into a psychiatric discourse on monomania, describing all extreme forms of enthusiasm—including fordance. Translated onto the vaudeville stage, monomania informed comic ballet productions as well as working-class cabaret, decried for depicting—and inspiring—surplus affect. Even the romantic tragedy Giselle may be seen to represent monomania: in this case, cast as gestural and emotional excess leading to feverish dancing and death.

Abstract:
Introduction During the Covid-19 pandemic, non-pharmacological interventions (NPIs) aimed to minimise the spread of the virus as much as possible to avoid the most severe cases and the collapse of health systems. These measures included mobility restrictions in several countries, including Spain. Objective To assess the impact of mobility constraints on incidence, transmission, severe cases and mortality in the evolution of the Covid-19 pandemic. These constraints include: • Mandatory home confinement. • - Recommendation to stay at home. • - Perimeter closures for entry and/or exit from established areas. • - Restriction of night-time mobility (curfew). Methodology Systematic literature review, including documents from official bodies, systematic reviews and meta-analyses. The following reference databases were consulted until October 2021 (free and controlled language): Medline, EMBASE, Cochrane Library, TripDB, Epistemonikos, Royal college of London, COVID-end, COVID-19 Evidence Reviews, WHO, ECDC and CDC. Study selection and quality analysis were performed by two independent researchers. References were filtered firstly by title and abstract and secondly by full text in the Covidence tool using a priori inclusion and exclusion criteria. Synthesis of the results was done qualitatively. The quality of the included studies was assessed using the AMSTAR-II tool. Results The literature search identified 642 studies, of which 38 were excluded as duplicates. Of the 604 potentially relevant studies, 12 studies (10 systematic reviews and 2 official agency papers) were included in the analysis after filtering. One of the official agency papers was from the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) and the other paper was from the Ontario Agency for Health Promotion and Protection (OHP). The result of the quality assessment with the AMSTAR-II tool of the included systematic reviews was: 3 reviews of moderate quality, 6 reviews of low quality and 1 review of critically low quality. The interventions analysed in the included studies were divided into 2 categories: the first category comprised mandatory home confinement, recommendation to stay at home and curfew, and the second category comprised perimeter blocking of entry and/or exit (local, cross-community, national or international). This division is because the included reviews analysed the measures of mandatory home confinement, advice to stay at home and curfew together without being able to carry out a disaggregated analysis. The included systematic reviews for the evaluation of home confinement, stay-at-home advice and curfew express a decrease in incidence levels, transmission and severe cases following the implementation of mobility limitation interventions compared to the no measure comparator. These conclusions are supported by the quantitative or qualitative results of the studies they include. All reviews also emphasise that to increase the effectiveness of these restrictions it is necessary to combine them with other public health measures. In the systematic reviews included for the assessment of entry and/or exit perimeter closure, most of the studies included in the reviews were found to be modelling studies based on mathematical models. All systematic reviews report a decrease in incidence, transmission and severe case levels following the implementation of travel restriction interventions. The great heterogeneity of travel restrictions applied, such as travel bans, border closures, passenger testing or screening, mandatory quarantine of travellers or optional recommendations for travellers to stay at home, makes data analysis and evaluation of interventions difficult. Conclusions Mobility restrictions in the development of the Covid-19 pandemic were one of the main NPI measures implemented. It can be concluded from the review that there is evidence for a positive impact of NPIs on the development of the COVID-19 pandemic. The heterogeneity of the data from the included studies and their low quality make it difficult to assess the effectiveness of mobility limitations in a disaggregated manner. Despite this, all the included reviews show a decrease in incidence, transmission, hospitalisations and deaths following the application of the measures under study. These measures are more effective when the restrictions were implemented earlier in the pandemic, were applied for a longer period and were more rigorous in their application.
