Abstract:
This article discusses a methodology for assessing the effectiveness of a high-performance research platform. The assessment is carried out for the example of the "Informatika" Center for Collective Use (CCU) established at the Federal Research Center of the Institute of Management of the Russian Academy of Sciences, for solving new materials synthesis problems. The main objective of the "Informatika" Center for Collective Use is to conduct research using the software and hardware of the data center of the FRC IU RAS, including for the benefit of third-party organizations and research teams. The general characteristics of the "Informatika" Center for Collective Use are presented, including the main characteristics of its scientific equipment, work organization and capabilities. The hybrid high-performance computing cluster of the FRC CSC RAS (HHPCC) is part of the data center of the FRC IU RAS and also part of the “Informatika” Center for Collective Use. HHPCC provides computing resources in the form of cloud services as software (SaaS) and platform (PaaS) services. With the aid of special technologies, scientific services are delivered to researchers in the form of subject-oriented applications. Based on the analysis of the structure and operation principles of the Informatika Center, key performance indicators of the Center have been developed taking into account its specific tasks in order to characterize its various activity aspects (development, activities and performance). CCU efficiency evaluation implies calculation, on the basis of the developed indicators, of overall (generalized) indicators that characterize the CCU operation efficiency in various areas. An integral indicator is also calculated showing the overall CCU efficiency. To develop the overall performance indicators and the integral performance indicator, it is suggested to use the methods of weighted average and analysis of hierarchies. The procedure of determining partial performance indicators has been considered. Specific features of the choice of CCU performance indicators for solving new materials synthesis problems have been identified that characterize computing complex capabilities in the creation of a virtualization environment (peak performance of a computing system, real performance of a computing system on specialized tests, equipment loading with applied tasks and program code efficiency).

Abstract:
The RUNX1/AML1 gene encodes a developmental transcription factor that is an important regulator of haematopoiesis in vertebrates. Genetic disruptions to the RUNX1 gene are frequently associated with acute myeloid leukaemia. Gene regulatory elements (REs), such as enhancers located in non-coding DNA, are likely to be important for Runx1 transcription. Non-coding elements that modulate Runx1 expression have been investigated over several decades, but how and when these REs function remains poorly understood. Here we used bioinformatic methods and functional data to characterise the regulatory landscape of vertebrate Runx1. We identified REs that are conserved between human and mouse, many of which produce enhancer RNAs in diverse tissues. Genome-wide association studies detected single nucleotide polymorphisms in REs, some of which correlate with gene expression quantitative trait loci in tissues in which the RE is active. Our analyses also suggest that REs can be variant in haematological malignancies. In summary, our analysis identifies features of the RUNX1 regulatory landscape that are likely to be important for the regulation of this gene in normal and malignant haematopoiesis.

Abstract:

RSS is a format for easy information sharing between computers. A RSS-file, also known as a feed or a channel, consist of a list of items. The items are structured with XML-tags and have to be processed in some way before it can be read. RSS¬readers, web-browsers with RSS support and e-mail-clients with RSS support can be used to display the feed.

This thesis is focused to investigate if RSS can be used within an enterprise for internal communication. We look at different computer based communication tools that are available today and compare them with RSS. All the different tools has there advantages as well as disadvantages, we have tried to find out if there is room for one more information channel within an enterprise.

Our study shows that RSS is not suitable as a stand alone solution for internal combination. RSS main strengths lies in mass information that has to be pushed out in one direction.

Abstract:

The web has evolved much through the years. From being a place where author and reader were clearly distinguished, it now invites everyone to take part in the development of both content and technology. Social services are central in what is called Web 2.0. Wikis, blogs and folksonomies are all examples of how the users and their communities are key to the development of services. Collaborative writing, tags and API:s are central. Social services are given an extra dimension through integration. The purpose of this study was to investigate whether it was possible to integrate an encyclopedia with a photosharing service. The issue was whether it was possible to find relevant images to the article they were connected to. The method for examining the issue was to create a service which functions was investigated through user tests. Wickrpedia was created, which is an integration of Wikipedia and Flickr. Wikipedia is an encyclopedia in the shape of a wiki, while Flickr is used to store, organize and share photos. The result shows that the images added someting to the encyclopedia; it became more entertaining and pleasant and the users’ knowledge was increased. The relevance of the images was good. The service can and should be improved. The conclusion is still that the service worked well and was seen as an improvement by the users.

Zivkovic, A. (Aleksandar). "Development of autonomous driving using ROS." Master's thesis, University of Oulu, 2018. http://urn.fi/URN:NBN:fi:oulu-201806062488.

Full text
Abstract:
Autonomous driving, or self-driving, is the ability of a vehicle to drive itself without human input. To achieve this, the vehicle uses mechanical and electronic parts, sensors, actuators and an on-board computer. The on-board computer runs sophisticated software which allows the vehicle to perceive and understand its environment based on sensor input, localise itself in that environment and plan the optimal route from point A to point B. Autonomous driving is no longer a thing of the future, and to develop autonomous driving solutions is a highly valuable skill in today’s software engineering field. Robot Operating System (ROS) is a meta-operating system that simplifies the process of robotics programming. This master’s thesis aims to demonstrate how ROS could be used to develop autonomous driving software by analysing autonomous driving problems, examining existing solutions and developing a prototype vehicle using ROS. This thesis provides an overview of autonomous driving and usage of ROS in the development of autonomous driving, then elaborates on the benefits and challenges of using ROS for autonomous car development. The research methods used in this master’s thesis are design science research (DSR) and a literature review. An artefact is developed and evaluated—a remote-controlled (RC) car equipped with Raspberry Pi 3 board as the on-board computer, an Arduino Uno board, Teensy LC board, a set of sensors and ROS-based software. The thesis is supported by the author’s employer, automotive software company called Elektrobit. By following the steps described in this thesis, it is possible to develop an autonomous driving RC car which runs on ROS. Additionally, this thesis shows why ROS provides good solutions for the autonomous driving issues. It points to the benefits of ROS: open sourced, peer-to-peer, network-based meta-operating system with ready-made components for autonomous driving, and highlights some of the challenges of ROS: security issues and single point of failure.

Papanikolaou, Alexandros. "A combined approach for hiding partial information in RSA." Thesis, Aston University, 2006. http://publications.aston.ac.uk/10680/.

Full text
Abstract:
Partial information leakage in deterministic public-key cryptosystems refers to a problem that arises when information about either the plaintext or the key is leaked in subtle ways. Quite a common case is where there are a small number of possible messages that may be sent. An attacker may be able to crack the scheme simply by enumerating all the possible ciphertexts. Two methods are proposed for facing the partial information leakage problem in RSA that incorporate a random element into the encrypted message to increase the number of possible ciphertexts. The resulting scheme is, effectively, an RSA-like cryptosystem which exhibits probabilistic encryption. The first method involves encrypting several similar messages with RSA and then using the Quadratic Residuosity Problem (QRP) to mark the intended one. In this way, an adversary who has correctly guessed two or more of the ciphertexts is still in doubt about which message is the intended one. The cryptographic strength of the combined system is equal to the computational difficulty of factorising a large integer; ideally, this should be feasible. The second scheme uses error-correcting codes for accommodating the random component. The plaintext is processed with an error-correcting code and deliberately corrupted before encryption. The introduced corruption lies within the error-correcting ability of the code, so as to enable the recovery of the original message. The random corruption offers a vast number of possible ciphertexts corresponding to a given plaintext; hence an attacker cannot deduce any useful information from it. The proposed systems are compared to other cryptosystems sharing similar characteristics, in terms of execution time and ciphertext size, so as to determine their practical utility. Finally, parameters which determine the characteristics of the proposed schemes are also examined.

Encryption has been used for a long time and is used nowadays to encode information in such a way that authorized people will only be able to read it. Encryption is also used for authentication, to hide a person’s identity. The goal with this thesis is to create an encryption program which will be able to perform encryption and decryption with two algorithms. There are already a number of encryption programs on market and we hope that our program will be as good as these. Performance tests will be done after the program is finished to see if the goals have been achieved. This thesis is done together with the help from Forsvarsmakten. This thesis is written in Swedish.

Abstract:
This paper describes the work carried out by the Inter-American Development Bank, the IDB Lab, LACChain, Cambridge Quantum Computing (CQC), and Tecnológico de Monterrey to identify and eliminate quantum threats in blockchain networks. The advent of quantum computing threatens internet protocols and blockchain networks because they utilize non-quantum resistant cryptographic algorithms. When quantum computers become robust enough to run Shor's algorithm on a large scale, the most used asymmetric algorithms, utilized for digital signatures and message encryption, such as RSA, (EC)DSA, and (EC)DH, will be no longer secure. Quantum computers will be able to break them within a short period of time. Similarly, Grover's algorithm concedes a quadratic advantage for mining blocks in certain consensus protocols such as proof of work. Today, there are hundreds of billions of dollars denominated in cryptocurrencies that rely on blockchain ledgers as well as the thousands of blockchain-based applications storing value in blockchain networks. Cryptocurrencies and blockchain-based applications require solutions that guarantee quantum resistance in order to preserve the integrity of data and assets in their public and immutable ledgers. We have designed and developed a layer-two solution to secure the exchange of information between blockchain nodes over the internet and introduced a second signature in transactions using post-quantum keys. Our versatile solution can be applied to any blockchain network. In our implementation, quantum entropy was provided via the IronBridge Platform from CQC and we used LACChain Besu as the blockchain network.

Abstract:
This study was conducted to inventory, classify, and map soils and vegetation within the ecosystems of Katmai National Park and Preserve (KATM) using an ecological land survey (ELS) approach. The ecosystem classes identified in the ELS effort were mapped across the park, using an archive of Geo-graphic Information System (GIS) and Remote Sensing (RS) datasets pertaining to land cover, topography, surficial geology, and glacial history. The description and mapping of the landform-vegetation-soil relationships identified in the ELS work provides tools to support the design and implementation of future field- and RS-based studies, facilitates further analysis and contextualization of existing data, and will help inform natural resource management decisions. We collected information on the geomorphic, topographic, hydrologic, pedologic, and vegetation characteristics of ecosystems using a dataset of 724 field plots, of which 407 were sampled by ABR, Inc.—Environmental Research and Services (ABR) staff in 2016–2017, and 317 were from existing, ancillary datasets. ABR field plots were located along transects that were selected using a gradient-direct sampling scheme (Austin and Heligers 1989) to collect data for the range of ecological conditions present within KATM, and to provide the data needed to interpret ecosystem and soils development. The field plot dataset encompassed all of the major environmental gradients and landscape histories present in KATM. Individual state-factors (e.g., soil pH, slope aspect) and other ecosystem components (e.g., geomorphic unit, vegetation species composition and structure) were measured or categorized using standard classification systems developed for Alaska. We described and analyzed the hierarchical relationships among the ecosystem components to classify 92 Plot Ecotypes (local-scale ecosystems) that best partitioned the variation in soils, vegetation, and disturbance properties observed at the field plots. From the 92 Plot Ecotypes, we developed classifications of Map Ecotypes and Disturbance Landscapes that could be mapped across the park. Additionally, using an existing surficial geology map for KATM, we developed a map of Generalized Soil Texture by aggregating similar surficial geology classes into a reduced set of classes representing the predominant soil textures in each. We then intersected the Ecotype map with the General-ized Soil Texture Map in a GIS and aggregated combinations of Map Ecotypes with similar soils to derive and map Soil Landscapes and Soil Great Groups. The classification of Great Groups captures information on the soil as a whole, as opposed to the subgroup classification which focuses on the properties of specific horizons (Soil Survey Staff 1999). Of the 724 plots included in the Ecotype analysis, sufficient soils data for classifying soil subgroups was available for 467 plots. Soils from 8 orders of soil taxonomy were encountered during the field sampling: Alfisols (<1% of the mapped area), Andisols (3%), Entisols (45%), Gelisols (<1%), Histosols (12%), Inceptisols (22%), Mollisols (<1%), and Spodosols (16%). Within these 8 Soil Orders, field plots corresponded to a total of 74 Soil Subgroups, the most common of which were Typic Cryaquents, Typic Cryorthents, Histic Cryaquepts, Vitrandic Cryorthents, and Typic Cryofluvents.
