Department of Chemistry, Shivaji University, Kolhapur-416 004 <em>Manuscript received 27 July 1994, revised 20 August 1996, accepted 20 September 1996</em> The sensitivity, pH&#39;s of maximum colour change and rapidity of colour change of &alpha;-<em>o</em>-(carboxyphenyl)-, &alpha;-<em>p</em>-(carboxyphenyl)-, &alpha;-<em>m</em>-(sulphophenyl)- and &alpha;-<em>p</em>-(sulphophenyl)azo-<em>p</em>-nitrobenzylcyanide (designated respectively as OCPNBC, PCPNBC, MSPNBC and PSPNBC), have been evaluated in methanolic sodium methoxide (MSM) and ethanolic sodium ethoxide (ESE) media which are calculated in terms of specific colour discrimination steps, pHmcc, and half-band width of changes of SCD in pH units. For rapid calculations of these values, the 1963 Commission International de L&#39;Edairage (CIE) recommendation for perceptually - more uniform colour spacing - has been given preference to the Mac-Adams Ellipses and RUCS system. The chromatic separations calculated from coordinates obtained by these systems have been reported.

Abstract:
Purpose The purpose of this paper is the development of a multiscale model which simulates the effect of the dispersion, the waviness, the interphase geometry as well as the agglomerations of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) on the Young’s modulus of a polymer filled with 0.4 Vol.% MWCNTs. Design/methodology/approach For the determination of the homogenized elastic properties of the hybrid material representative unit cells (RUCs) have been used. The predicted homogenized elastic properties were used for the prediction of the Young’s modulus of the filled material by simulating a finite element (FE) model of a tensile specimen. Moreover, the model has been validated by comparing the predicted values of the numerical analysis with experimental tensile results. Findings As the MWCNT agglomerates increase, the results showed a remarkable decrease of the Young’s modulus regarding the polymer filled with aligned MWCNTs while only slight differences on the Young’s modulus have been found in the case of randomly oriented MWCNTs. This might be attributed to the low concentration of the MWCNTs (0.4 Vol.%) into the polymer. For low MWCNTs concentrations, the interphase seems to have negligible effect on the Young’s modulus. Furthermore, as the MWCNTs waviness increases, a remarkable decrease of the Young’s modulus of the polymer filled with aligned MWCNTs is observed. In the case that MWCNTs are randomly dispersed into the polymer, both numerical and experimental results have been found to be consistent regarding the Young’s modulus. Practical implications The methodology used can be adopted by any system containing nanofillers. Originality/value Although several studies on the effect of the MWCNTs distribution on the Young’s modulus have been conducted, limited results exist by using a more realistic RUC including a periodic geometry of more than 20 MWCNTs with random orientation and a more realistic waviness of MWCNTs with aspect ratio exceeding 150.

Abstract:
Little is known about occupational SARS-CoV-2 exposures and COVID-19 outcomes. We established a Doctor’s First Reports of Occupational Injury or Illness (DFR)-based surveillance system to study cases of work-related COVID-19 exposures and disease. The surveillance data included demographics, occupation, industry, exposure, and illness, details including hospitalization and lost work. We classified workers into ‘healthcare’, non-healthcare ‘public-facing’, or ‘other’ worker groups, and rural–urban commuting areas (RUCAs). We describe worker exposures and outcomes overall by worker group and RUCA. We analyzed 2848 COVID-19 DFRs representing workers in 22 detailed occupation groups and 19 industry groups. Most DFRs were for workers in metropolitan RUCAs (89%) and those in healthcare (42%) and public-facing (24%) worker groups. While DFRs were from 382 unique worksites, 52% were from four hospitals and one prison. Among 1063 DFRs with a suspected exposure, 73% suspected exposure to a patient or client. Few DFRs indicated hospitalization (3.9%); however, the proportion hospitalized was higher among nonmetropolitan (7.4%) and public-facing (6.7%) workers. While 56% of DFRs indicated some lost work time, the proportion was highest among public-facing (80%) workers. Healthcare and prison workers were the majority of reported occupational COVID-19 exposures and illnesses. The risk of COVID-19 hospitalization and lost work may be highest among nonmetropolitan and public-facing workers.

Abstract:
This article outlines several fundamental elements which contribute to the emergence of the political phenomenon known as “populism”. In contemporary, democratic, political system conditions, factors conducive to the development of this phenomenon include those resulting from the progress of civilizational and the growing social issues that accompany it. In a very synthetic way, populism can be seen as the articulation, within a specific society of problems, that arise based on group and individual goals. The question remains open as to whether populism, as a new political phenomenon, is becoming a precursor to the next stage in the process of global social development.

Abstract:
Machine-to-Machine (M2M) systems and cloud services provide various kinds of data via distributed Web services. A context-aware service recognizes real-world contexts from such data and behaves autonomously. However, it has been challenging to manage contexts and services defined on the heterogeneous and distributed Web services. In this paper, the authors propose a framework, called RuCAS, which systematically creates and manages context-aware service using various Web services. RuCAS describes every context-aware service by an ECA (Event-Condition-Action) rule. For this, an event is a context triggering the service, a condition is a set of contexts to be satisfied for execution, and the action is a set of Web services to be executed by the service. Thus, every context-aware service is managed in a uniform manner. Since RuCAS is published as a Web service, created contexts and services are reusable. As a case study, RuCAS is applied to a real home network system.

Abstract:
This article describes various electrochemical programs that could enable advanced vehicles to generate critical gases directly from water. Energy storage solutions using water electrolysis and fuel cell systems are being examined for applications ranging from backup power systems and lighter-than-air vehicles to extraterrestrial bases on the moon and Mars. The basic architecture of a regenerative fuel cell energy storage system includes a high-pressure water electrolysis system, a fuel cell, a fluid management and storage system, a thermal management system, and a power management system. For extraterrestrial applications, the system would be used in tandem with a photovoltaic array. Recent studies have focused on oxygen and hydrogen storage pressures of between 1000 and 2000 psi, requiring the development of a high, balanced-pressure water electrolysis cell stack and balance of plant to safely manage these fluids. Fuel cell-powered vehicles hold the promise of reducing greenhouse gas emissions from the transportation sector, provided the hydrogen fuel is produced from a renewable energy source, such as a high-pressure water electrolyzer operating from wind, solar, or nuclear power.

Zhu, Yurong. "Large Deviations on Longest Runs." Thesis, Linköpings universitet, Matematisk statistik, 2016. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:liu:diva-128822.

Abstract:
The study on the longest stretch of consecutive successes in \random" trials dates back to 1916 when the German philosopher Karl Marbe wrote a paper concerning the longest stretch of consecutive births of children of the same sex as appearing in the birth register of a Bavarian town. The result was actually used by parents to \predict" the sex of their children. The longest stretch of same-sex births during that time in 200 thousand birth registrations was actually 17 t log2(200 103): During the past century, the research of longest stretch of consecutive successes (longest runs) has found applications in various areas, especially in the theory of reliability. The aim of this thesis is to study large deviations on longest runs in the setting of Markov chains. More precisely, we establish a general large deviation principle for the longest success run in a two-state (success or failure) Markov chain. Our tool is based on a recent result regarding a general large deviation for the longest success run in Bernoulli trails. It turns out that the main ingredient in the proof is to implement several global and local estimates of the cumulative distribution function of the longest success run.

Abstract:
A revisão proposta recomenda que, na definição das funções que as vias possam ter dentro da rede viária urbana usualmente caracterizada pela relação entre os níveis de mobilidade e acessibilidade proporcionados ao tráfego veicular - sejam consideradas, de forma mais abrangente, as necessidades dos usuários não motorizados (pedestres e ciclistas) no que diz respeito às características geométricas da seção transversal.<br>The paper presents, at first, a research about the historic evolution of the roadway system in São Paulo as an aid to understand the changes the city went through, for decades, in its urban configuration and in the way people and vehicles moved through the circulation physical network. The paper analyzed the road aspects of urban plans which, many times were understood as roadway plans, and of the urban laws of land division during the period of 1895 to 2004. Based on the findings of the research, as well as the critical analysis of rules and manuals in effect in the City São Paulo, mainly those that address the establishment of a roadway-typical cross section, the present paper aims at suggesting a contribution to the roadway classification review of the City of São Paulo. The proposed review recommends, according to the definition of the roles that the roadways may play within the urban roadway network usually characterized by the relation between the mobility and accessibility levels provided to vehicle traffic to take into consideration, in a more comprehensive manner, the needs of those non-motorized users, (pedestrians and cyclists) in regard to the cross-section geometrical characteristics.

Abstract:
The monograph is devoted to the problem of recreating the linguistic-ethnic unity of the Old Russian anthroponymic and toponymic systems, the discovery of direct connections between the proper name and mental landmarks.&#x0D; The monograph provides a comprehensive description of the onomasticon of ancient Russian monuments of writing in line with comparative historical linguistics, taking into account the encyclopedic, ethnolinguistic and etymological characteristics of proper names. The system and structure of the onomastic space of monuments of ecclesiastical and secular content of the XI-XIII centuries are investigated, conceptual approaches to their description are proposed. The study of the functions of proper names, their morphemics and semantics allowed us to establish the national and cultural specifics of the Old Russian onomastic vocabulary, to determine the prospects for its evolution, as well as the formation of the modern Russian anthroponymic system.&#x0D; Modeling of the Old Russian onomastic space both in the field of anthroponymy and toponymy takes into account the connection of proper names with contextual usage. The participation of nominal signs in the formation of the space of written and artistic texts of the era of the Kievan state is based on the attachment of certain proper names to texts of a religious and secular nature. Nomination in the space of proper names is considered in the monograph not only as a process of activity of a creative nature, but also as a means of onymic word production in the older era. &#x0D; It is addressed to specialists in historical lexicology and onomastics, language history, teachers of literature, local historians.

Abstract:
Abstract Corrosion in a shipboard waste drain system piping resulted in at-sea failures and impacted ships' operations. Metallurgical analyses of pipe sections removed from service identified the failure mechanism to be poultice corrosion enhanced by the presence of sulfides and high flow rates or excessive turbulence. A variety of methods to mitigate the corrosion including water treatment, materials substitution, coatings, and cathodic protection were investigated. Applying coatings to the inside diameters of the piping runs was most attractive from both logistics and cost standpoints compared to the other corrosion control methods studied. A flexible extension for a standard commercial powder coating gun was developed in order to apply coatings to internal piping surfaces. This extension allows application of heat cured epoxy powder coatings to piping runs up to six feet in length that contain multiple short radius elbows. Implementation of the coating process will result in significant corrosion reduction and related maintenance cost savings while ensuring operational readiness of the fleet.

Abstract:
Abstract Underground/underwater pipelines are susceptible to corrosion from DC stray current originating from the operation of High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) transmission systems. With increasing population growth and the demand for electrical power, HVDC transmission is an economical method of transporting electrical energy over long distances. There are two distinct types of HVDC transmission, monopolar and bipolar. Monopolar systems use the earth or preferably sea water as the return circuit, whereas bipolar systems only use the earth or sea water during electrical upsets or faults. This paper will outline the effect of stray current that originates from an HVDC transmission system that runs parallel to and crosses a crude oil and natural gas pipeline system. Ground fault currents as high as 2800 amps have been recorded flowing into the ground electrode when the bipolar HVDC system reverts to monopolar operation during fault conditions or during scheduled maintenance.

Abstract:
This paper describes a guidance algorithm for autonomous operation in partially known environments. The emphasis of the paper is enabling learning within a receding horizon trajectory optimization framework. The information acquired from an exteroceptive sensor is assimilated into a spatial value function. This setup has the advantage that the system learns information directly relevant to optimal guidance and control behavior and enables efficient trajectory-planning in unknown or partially known environments. The system's performance is demonstrated using successive runs in high-fidelity indoor simulations.

Ellis, Peter F. "Selection Considerations for FGD Slurry Piping." In CORROSION 2000. NACE International, 2000. https://doi.org/10.5006/c2000-00575.

Full text
Abstract:
Abstract In addition to the piping that carries slurry to the spray headers of the absorbers, many FGD systems include very long runs of piping to slurry ponds and other discharge points. While slurry piping does not receive extensive attention in the technical literature, proper piping selection can significantly improve system reliability and performance, while incorrect selections can lead to increased cost and/or serious maintenance problems. Alloy piping, fiber-reinforced thermoset plastic piping, thermoplastic piping, and steel piping lined with rubber (sometimes with a rubber cover as well) have all been used. No one category of piping is best for all applications. The advantages and disadvantages of each category are discussed in detail.

Abstract:
Abstract The new Metrolink light rail transit system runs from Lambert International Airport into downtown St. Louis and across the Eads bridge to East St. Louis, Illinois. Various steps have been taken to control stray current because of the complexity of underground structures along the right of way. The rail system is now in operation and the effectiveness of the stray current control program is being evaluated through a test program and the cooperation of all concerned.

Full text
Abstract:
This paper outlines the dynamic behavior of externally excited rotor/stator systems with occasional, partial rubbing conditions. The observed phenomenon have one major source of a strong nonlinearity: transition from no contact to contact state between mechanical elements, one of which is rotating. This results in variable stiffness and damping, impacting, and intermittent involvement of friction. A new model for such a transition (impact) is developed. In case of the contact between rotating and stationary elements, it correlates the local radial and tangential (“super ball”) effects with global behavior of the system. The results of numerical simulations of a simple rotor/stator system based on that model are presented in the form of bifurcation diagrams, rotor lateral vibration time–base waves, and orbits. The vibrational behavior of the considered system is characterized by orderly harmonic and subharmonic responses, as well as by chaotic vibrations. A new result (additional subharmonic regime of vibration) is obtained for the case of heavy rub of an anisotropically supported rotor. The correspondence between numerical simulation and previously obtained experimental data supports the adequacy of the new model of impact.

Full text
Abstract:
This paper carries out an analytical stability study on the solutions of externally excited, symmetrical rotor/stator systems with full annular rubs. The obtained analytical stability conditions contribute to a better understanding of the dynamical jump phenomena, which correspond to the occurrence of the saddle-node bifurcation of the full annular rub solutions, and the transition between full annular rubs and partial rubs, which corresponds to the Hopf bifurcation. A systematic investigation of the influence of the system parameters on these phenomena is performed. It is also found by means of numerical simulations that the Hopf bifurcation boundaries of the full annular rub solutions can serve as good approximations or conservative boundaries for the dry whip instability of the considered rotor system.

Weinstein Agrawal, Asha, Samuel Speroni, Michael Manville, and Brian D. Taylor. Pay-As-You-Go Driving: Examining Possible Road-User Charge Rate Structures for California. Mineta Transporation Institute, 2023. http://dx.doi.org/10.31979/mti.2023.2149.

Full text
Abstract:
This report lays out principles to help California policymakers identify an optimal rate structure for a road-user charge (RUC). The rate structure is different from the rate itself. The rate is the price a driver pays, while the structure is the set of principles that govern how that price is set. We drew on existing research on rate setting in transportation, public utilities, and behavioral economics to develop a set of conceptual principles that can be used to evaluate rate structures, and then applied these principles to a set of mileage fee rate structure options. Key findings include that transportation system users already pay for driving using a wide array of rate structures, including some that charge rate structured based on vehicle characteristics, user characteristics, and time or location of driving. We also conclude that the principal advantage of RUCs is not their ability to raise revenue but rather to variably allocate charges among various types of users and travelers. To obtain those benefits, policymakers need to proactively design rate structures to advance important state policy goals and/or improve administrative and political feasibility.

O'Neill, Clare, Andy Saulter, Christopher Stokes, and Breogán Gómez. Application of bias correction to the Met Office operational storm surge forecast. Met Office, 2025. https://doi.org/10.62998/tymo5223.

Full text
Abstract:
The Met Office runs an operational storm surge forecast system for the UK based on a 7 km configuration of NEMO forced by wind and air pressure from Met Office global atmosphere forecasts. The water level forecast comprises the surge residual from the model added to the harmonic tide prediction derived from observations. A new automated bias correction has been added to the system to improve forecast performance. The correction has 3 components: a mean sea level correction to account for different mean sea levels in the forced and unforced model runs, a monthly correction to account for the atmospheric component included in harmonic tide predictions, and an empirical constant correction to account for sea level rise and other effects not currently included in the surge model. The correction scheme is shown to significantly improve the overall forecast skill compared to the original uncorrected forecast. The number of forecasts that fall outside the target 20 cm accuracy is reduced from an average of 17% (whole tide cycle) and 22% (high waters only) to less than 6% (in both cases). The average RMS error is reduced from 14 cm (whole tide cycle) and 15 cm (high waters) to 9 cm (in both cases) and the average bias is reduced from 11 cm to 1cm (all tide cycle) and 13 cm to 3 cm (high waters). The correction was added to the operational system in August 2024.

Abstract:
Artificial intelligence that makes news headlines, such as ChatGPT, typically runs in well-maintained data centers with an abundant supply of compute and power. However, these resources are more limited on many systems in the real world, such as drones, satellites, or ground vehicles. As a result, the AI that can run onboard these devices will often be inferior to state of the art models. That can affect their usability and the need for additional safeguards in high-risk contexts. This issue brief contextualizes these challenges and provides policymakers with recommendations on how to engage with these technologies.

Full text
Abstract:
Why do banks fail? We create a panel covering most commercial banks from 1865 through 2023 to study the history of failing banks in the United States. Failing banks are characterized by rising asset losses, deteriorating solvency, and an increasing reliance on expensive non-core funding. Commonalities across failing banks imply that failures are highly predictable using simple accounting metrics from publicly available financial statements. Predictability is high even in the absence of deposit insurance, when depositor runs were common. Bank-level fundamentals also forecast aggregate waves of bank failures during systemic banking crises. Altogether, our evidence suggests that the ultimate cause of bank failures and banking crises is almost always and everywhere a deterioration of bank fundamentals. Bank runs can be rejected as a plausible cause of failure for most failures in the history of the U.S. and are most commonly a consequence of imminent failure. Depositors tend to be slow to react to an increased risk of bank failure, even in the absence of deposit insurance.
