Abstract:
This article investigates the musical thought and stylistic evolution of the American modernist composer Ruth Crawford Seeger (1901-1953) in her formative years. It shows the relationship of style and idea to what she termed "spiritual concept": the core of her transcendental modernism. The sources of Crawford's spiritual aesthetics are Theosophy, Eastern religious philosophy, nineteenth-century American Transcendentalism, and the imaginative tradition of Walt Whitman. Thus Crawford drew on an eclectic legacy of ideas that had been linked in American intellectual life since the turn of the century. Documentation of her thought is based on unpublished diaries, poems, and correspondence. The mediation between style and idea is discussed in terms of the influence of two composers, Scriabin and Dane Rudhyar, and specific compositional procedures, such as: (1) the local referential gesture, exposed through expressive terminology like "mystic," "veiled," and "religioso"; (2) the hidden program, in which an untitled work is revealed to have an extra-musical context; and (3) the free, imaginative recreation of Eastern sacred chant. Music discussed includes the Sonata for Violin and Piano, the sixth and ninth prelude for piano, and the Chants for Women's Chorus.

Abstract:
Blood vessel formation requires endothelial cell (EC) migration that depends on dynamic remodeling of the cytoskeleton. Rudhira/Breast Carcinoma Amplified Sequence 3 (BCAS3) is a cytoskeletal protein essential for EC migration and sprouting angiogenesis during mouse development and is implicated in metastatic disease. Here, we report that Rudhira mediates cytoskeleton organization and dynamics during EC migration. Rudhira binds to both microtubules (MTs) and vimentin intermediate filaments (IFs) and stabilizes MTs. Rudhira depletion impairs cytoskeletal cross-talk, MT stability, and hence focal adhesion disassembly. The BCAS3 domain of Rudhira is necessary and sufficient for MT-IF cross-linking and cell migration. Pharmacologically restoring MT stability rescues gross cytoskeleton organization and angiogenic sprouting in Rudhira-depleted cells. Our study identifies the novel and essential role of Rudhira in cytoskeletal cross-talk and assigns function to the conserved BCAS3 domain. Targeting Rudhira could allow tissue-restricted cytoskeleton modulation to control cell migration and angiogenesis in development and disease.

Abstract:
In the modern information society a man is in the flow of a dynamic life. An avalanche of information falls on him, which has a strong impact on his consciousness. In this situation the question of human values becomes particularly relevant. The relevance of the values’ problem draws attention to the concepts that reveal new aspects in the determination, formation and functioning of values. Regarding it the A. Maslow’s concept of values, built by a researcher in the XX century on the basis of psychology, is of interest. The purpose of the research is to reveal the main provisions of the A. Maslow’s concept of values highlighting the moments of novelty in them, and to show its influence on the certain cultural phenomena, in particular astrology. The analysis of astrology is based on the material of works of D. Rudhyar, the famous philosopher and astrologer. Within the research such methods of humanitarian knowledge as the method of comparison, analysis and synthesis are used. It is need to separately note the method of philosophical hermeneutics, the main elements of which are understanding and interpretation of the text. The study of the A. Maslow’s concept of values and the possibilities of its application in culture allows us to outline the new ways of entering the applied axiology, which is closely related to the inner man. A new determinant of the genesis of values – psychological – is discovered. A. Maslow reveals that the basis of the formation of values is the person’s needs and abilities. It is on their basis the valuable and significant for a person is formed. An attempt is made to move the issue of developing values from a purely descriptive plane to a practical one, eliminating the gap between «what is» and «what should be». It is revealed the usefulness of applying the A. Maslow’s concept of values with the example of astrology, which is not exclusively descriptive but involves an active practical application of it by a person. Moreover, based on that, markers of human interests and his receptivity to various cultural phenomena, in particular, astrology, are identified. The revealed features give a new way of looking at the explanation of the reasons for modern people hobbies and addictions to different non-scientific ways of mastering the world, including astrology. The research seems to be significant for further investigation of the forms and methods of human mastering the world and his interests in various aspects of modern cultural life.

Abstract:
This dissertation investigates the thought and the musical and artistic aesthetic of the French-American composer Dane Rudhyar (1895-1985). Seeking justification for his views and aesthetic in a variety of areas and distrusting both rationalism and mysticism exclusively in their own terms, Rudhyar chose an eclectic path. The qualities in his musical, visual, literary, philosophical and astrological work come not just from certain late nineteenth-century and early twentieth-century French and German sources, but also from the Orient (particularly India and Japan), and from the early idealism and optimism of the New World. The multi-faceted nature of his work and life also reflects his philosophy of Wholeness, i. e. the dynamic interplay between Multiplicity and Unity. During my research, I have undertaken the tasks of gathering together the hugely disparate body of Rudhyar's (philosophical, musical, visual, astrological and literary) works, and of investigating what stands behind his vision. While the content of this study is not intended to follow any chronological order, the principal views of Rudhyar have often affected the general flow and layout of the dissertation, which is structured in three large parts. The first deals with Rudhyar's European background and his `seed' philosophy. The second is an examination of Rudhyar's fascination with the Orient and its conceptual ramifications. The third evaluates Rudhyar's American identity against the background of some of the social and cultural overtones that shaped the United States, particularly up until World War II. In the musical discussions of this dissertation, emphasis has been placed on his piano music; works examined include Transmutation, Three Early Pieces, Theurgy and Three Melodies (for flute with piano and cello accompaniment). These analytical sections will be presented in the first and second parts and are not intended to be comprehensive accounts of the compositions in question but merely illustrations of the relationship between idea and realisation

Abstract:
This thesis presents an integrated assessment of the life and music of Johanna Beyer (1888-1944) through a combination of socio-cultural and musical analysis. It examines the composer?s biography in the context of the New York music scene in which she participated and the social and cultural paradigms of her time. Contemporary conceptions of gender and sex had a particularly strong impact on Beyer?s work and the reception of her music. Ideologies concerning gender, sex, work, composition and modernism intersected in a variety of ways in her life and music; these issues are examined extensively in Chapter Two. Because gendered thought was so instrumental in obscuring the work of this important composer, Chapters Three and Four provide a thorough and synthesized analysis of Beyer?s music that has thus far been denied to her. These chapters discuss both the composer?s dissonant, ?ultra-modern? music and her later tonal music, exploring elements of continuity and change in her oeuvre. The thesis rejects earlier interpretations of Beyer?s work as disjointed and argues that it is instead the product of a constantly evolving composer.
