Abstract:
The Wizard of Oz (1939) is one of the most often referenced, if not the most often referenced, text within US popular culture. The MGM classic starring Judy Garland has largely eclipsed L. Frank Baum’s vast universe of Oz and original book, as the songs (“Somewhere Over the Rainbow”), phrases (“We’re not in Kansas anymore”), and visual iconography (ruby slippers) of the film are regularly alluded to – and have taken on a life of their own. This not only raises The Wizard of Oz to mythic status, but it also allows for these references to serve as signifiers immediately understandable to a US-Am

American exceptionalism, which has been supposed to have a divine historiography, accentuates and represents various aspects of Americanness that manifest destiny and strong challenges. Its sense of independence and moral superiority stems from the mythos that prioritizes its uniqueness and responsibility as part of its formation process. This ideology, in particular, suggests that the prior history of these people is pointed toward the “New World” in order to build and glamorize their distinctive future. It was the Canadian philosopher Marshall McLuhan who first introduced the term ‘global village’ into the lexicon, almost fifty years ago. He was referring to the phenomenon of global interconnectedness of which we are all too aware today. At that time, we were witnessing the world just opening up. In 1946, British Airways had commenced a twice weekly service from London to New York. The flight involved one or two touch downs en-route and took a scheduled 19 hours and 45 minutes. By the time McLuhan had published his book “Understanding media; the extensions of man”, there were regular services

Endometrial cancer is one of the most common gynaecological cancers in high-income countries and, for many years, has been associated with poor outcomes for patients with advanced-stage disease. The results from the Phase III studies, RUBY Part 1 with dostarlimab, NRG-GY018 with pembrolizumab, and DUO-E with durvalumab, in patients with advanced or recurrent endometrial cancer in 2023 were practice-changing. The addition of immunotherapy to carboplatin–paclitaxel chemotherapy, followed by immunotherapy maintenance, led to a marked improvement in progression-free survival (PFS), particularly in

Abstract:
Analyzing and developing new quantum error-correcting (QEC) schemes is one of the most prominent tasks in quantum computing research. In such efforts, introducing time dynamics explicitly in both analysis and design of error-correcting protocols constitutes an important cornerstone. In this work, we present a graphical formalism based on tensor networks to capture the logical action and error-correcting capabilities of any Clifford circuit with Pauli measurements. We showcase the functioning of the formalism on new Floquet codes derived from topological subsystem codes, which we call XYZ . Bas

Introduction Where children’s television once ruled supreme as a vehicle for sales of kids’ brands, the marketing of children’s toys now often hinges on having the right social media influencer, many of them children themselves (Verdon). As Forbes reported in 2021, the pandemic saw an increase in children spending more time online, many following their favourite influencers on YouTube, TikTok, and Instagram. The importance of tapping into partnering with the right influencer grew, as did sales in toys for children isolated at home. We detail, through a case study approach and visual narrative

Phillip Noyce is one of Australia’s most prominent film makers—a successful feature film director with both iconic Australian narratives and many a Hollywood blockbuster under his belt. Still, his beginnings were quite humble and far from his role today when he grew up in the midst of the counterculture of the late sixties. Millions of young people his age joined the various ‘movements’ of the day after experiences that changed their lives—mostly music but also drugs or fashion. The counterculture was a turbulent time in Sydney artistic circles as elsewhere. Everything looked possible, you sim
