Abstract:
Bibliography: pages 327-337.
The hypothesis of this thesis is that the prose text is a means of communication, a linguistic utterance (message) produced by a person, the speaker or narrator, and addressed to another person (the reader or narratee). In such a text the utterance has meaning in a given context, this context is created by the speaker or narrator and the reader reconstructs this context by the interpretation of the speaker's reference to person, place and time the deictic elements. This thesis has tried to determine in which way the deictic context in prose is given structure in the text. By reconstructing and interpreting the deictic context in eight shorter Afrikaans prose texts and a novel we determined that this deictic context is a given structure in the text and released from the text by the reader's interpretation of the narrator's references to the speaker, persons, the spatiotemporal context and activities. The reader determines this deictic context by: a) identifying the egocentric speaker; b) identifying and localizing references to the spatiotemporal context; c) identifying all references to person and d) the interpretation of implications in the linguistic utterance. The reader's interpretation of this deictic context leads to an interpretation of the implicated message of the text, thus completing the communication process of the literary text. It has become evident that while reading prose it is of the utmost importance to make a difference be tween narrator and focalizer to determine the egocentric speaker; that references to persons and the spatiotemporal context are to be interpreted from the viewpoint of the egocentric speaker and that implications in the text can be devided into three categories: implications in the preliminary text (title, motto, etc.), deictic implications and standard linguistic implications. The defining and restructuring of this deictic context in prose texts is valuable in that it is a method for the critical reading of prose; leads to an interpretation of the text; accentuates the integration of text elements; gives lead to a metatextual reading of the text; is a method to differentiate between genres; establishes the communication process between text and reader and is of importance when evaluating the text.

Abstract:
Thesis (MA (Afrikaans and Dutch))--University of Stellenbosch, 2010.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This study explores the way in which the construction of space interacts with the development of identity in Joe Speedboot by Tommy Wieringa. On the basis of theoretical perspectives of, inter alia, Henri Lefebvre attention is given to the construction of the social space in the novel. The classification of Joe Speedboot as a Bildungsroman is an important point of departure in this regard, due to the fact that Wieringa depicts the central characters‟ adolescence in the novel. The portrayal of the construction of identity in the text corresponds with theoretical thoughts on identity as a dynamic and constructed concept that is affected by social and cultural considerations. An exploration of the simulated reality in which Wieringa situates his characters, indicates that the parochial space in Joe Speedboot is sketched as being stagnant and predictable. In contrast to the standstill which characterizes the social space, a preoccupation with movement and progress is ascribed to the central characters. Both the physical and existential dimensions of movement and mobility figure prominently in the novel. It is also interwoven with the liminal position the characters occupy in the community due to their adolescence. It is postulated that the opposition between stagnation and movement is not only exerted in the construction of space and the structural composition of the text, but is also presented as playing a determinative role in the development of the characters‟ identities. The author chooses for a main character with limited prospects and demonstrates how his physical handicap necessarily leads to a conclusion that allows for both positive and negative interpretations. Given the critical acclaim that the novel has received, it seems strange indeed that Joe Speedboot has thusfar not been the subject of analytical research.

Abstract:
Thesis (DTh (Practical Theology and Missiology))--Stellenbosch University, 2008.
The focus of the research is the problem that congregations experience in ministry when they are trying to integrate children and adults in inclusive intergenerational spaces in such a way that it will enable children and adults to serve God together and grow together spiritually. The research may be described as a quest for a theology and a church that truly invite and welcome children into their midst, and care for the children’s total humanness. As an exploratory study the research aims to contribute to the development of knowledge in respect of the theological foundation of a ministry in which adults accept the challenge of growing spiritually together with their children. The research was embarked upon from the perspective of Child Theology and a practical-theological ecclesiology. As a theology-from-below, Child Theology is a contextual theology and as such an inductive methodology was followed in the research. The first phase of the research examined the social and ecclesiastical context in which children grow up during the beginning of the 21st century. The social analysis revealed that children grow up in a global network society, characterized by fragmentation in different generations and developmental groups, an excessive emphasis on individualistic self-fulfilment, the disintegration of family life, the social exclusion and marginalization of children, and the search for identity. The ecclesiastical analysis has revealed that, from various quarters, a demand has arisen for greater theological contemplation about, and a new approach to, children’s ministry. The second phase of the research examined the diverse Biblical testimony concerning children, God, and the faith communities’ involvement with children. A number of Biblical theological perspectives in respect of children and the ministry to them have come to the fore, and were formulated. Beside all the other perspectives that have come to the fore, it became clear that, for the 21st century, the church and theology should reinterpret especially the radicalism of the testimony about Jesus’ interaction with children in the Gospel of Matthew. In the final phase, the hermeneutical process was continued in a sensitive correlative dialogue between the Word and the world in order to find basic-theoretical pointers for a discourse regarding the design of a practice theory for a ministry that can integrate children and adults in congregational life. These pointers are expressed as six lenses, while the parameters for a practice theory are shown. Enacting this practice theory demands more than a few superficial adaptations in the ministry of congregations. It demands, under the guidance of the Word and Spirit, that congregations rediscover their kenosis identity as God’s communities in which all have been transformed and have become like little children. God’s missional and community-founding identity will be reflected by the identification of values that can guide them in the realization of this kenosis identity in their ministry to, with, by and for children. Thus, this research generates the following condensed hypothesis: The ministry with children in and through the congregation as intergenerational space, can be a corrective of the disintegration of family life, the fragmentation of society in different generations and developmental groups, the excessive emphasis on individualistic self-fulfilment and the social exclusion and marginalization of children if, in the development of an effective ministry with children, the focus is on the rediscovery and realization of identity as a reflection of God’s missional and community-building identity.

AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: In this thesis the focus will be on some of the possibilities that our modern society presents to the presentation of the liturgical space church within the reformed worship services. The specific focus is on the liturgical year, more specifically Lent and Easter. Some of the customs or habits in the liturgical space, within the Dutch Reformed Church are questioned and some alternative suggestions are presented for the renewal of a reformed liturgy, because liturgy can be seen as a way of life.

Abstract:
In the present work, pure iridium oxide (IrO2), and ternary catalysts (IrSnSb-Oxides and RuIrTi-Oxides) are investigated to be used as anode electrocatalysts in The Direct Methanol Fuel Cells (DMFC). Investigations of Methanol Oxidation and Hydrogen Evolution over the catalysts are measured in sulphuric acid as a supportive electrolyte using cyclic voltammetry technique at room temperature (25°C). A specific comparison between the electrocatalytic activities of IrSnSb-Oxides and RuIrTi-Oxides systems is conducted. A comprehensive examination of IrSnSb-Oxides and RuIrTi-Oxides catalysts containing different fractions of the alloying elements are performed to study the effect of varying Iridium Ir content (%) in IrSnSb-Oxides and Ruthenium Ru content (%) in RuIrTi-Oxides on the catalytic activity of ternary catalysts and on the performance of DMFC. It is observed that the electrocatalytic performance of ternary oxides catalysts is strongly dependent on the Ir and Ru content. The generated IrO2 and 33.36% Ru – 1%Ir – 65.64%Ti – Oxides catalysts prove high stability for oxidation of methanol and more proficient electrochemical activity as an anodic electrocatalyst in DMFC at 25°C. The electrochemical measurements of the Hydrogen Evolution Reaction (HER) for metal oxides show that 46.65%Ir – 40.78%Sn – 12.57%Sb sample and 18.75%Ru – 9.35%Ir – 71.9%Ti sample are the superior hydrogen evolution catalysts at 25°C.

Abstract:
The actual area of the Imperial Forums is presented as a big urban void in which the scale of the city has been lost. A "no man's land", inhospitable, to which you could assign the qualifying of "non-place". A huge and fragmented "archaeological park" in which the observer is not able of relate the rests and recognise the trace of the ancient forums. This problems have been adressed within the framework of the "Workshop of Conservation and Intervention" of the MCPA Master of the UPV, in which have been suggested differente strategies, both of search of the sewn of the city, and of the recognition of the different historical stratums existing on the place. To the same extent, this topic has been an international contest object, on which the proposal we have presented comes from a “modern” attitude, that helps us going beyond the evocative power of the ruin, or from its value as a referent from the past. An attitude which seeks to inhabit the ruin, occupy and settle it with architectures that renew its value, they are commited with the past and the present, and they guarantee their future presence. In this sense, the wanted and searched condition of "presence", is not as supported by the recovery of what have existed as it is by the ability of the intervention by accepting the transformations which have happened throughout history, introducing in turn a new stratum that besides answering the current needs, strengthen its statement as architecture. And all of that, urban regeneration is searched through the recuperation of the city’s scale loss. KEY WORDS: ruin, urban void, urban regeneration, scale of the city, presence. Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
Abstract: The research focuses on Le Corbusier educational process and on his ability to abstract, through his memories, the images related to the knowledge of the Ancient World; a study that addresses the clear connection between the works of Le Corbusier and his knowledge of Roman architecture, outlining two interpretations: the first one linked to the archetype of classic models, and the second one to ruins and archaeological landscape. The first interpretation clearly illustrates the rational perspective, the will to pursue an universal architecture distinguished by use of reason, that only archetypes can teach, whereas the second interpretation attempts to outline the relationship between the evocative influence of the ruin and the personal suggestions of the architect. Retracing the steps of his educational process, the research investigates the knowledge acquired by the young Jeanneret during his German stay (1910-1911). This is the first phase of the study of Roman architecture, that inspires him an interest that will be pursued later through the experience of the Voyage d 'Orient and the study of some sources, such as Piranesi's views. This learning is reflected in numerous drawings and reflections contained in Carnet 4 and in Carnet 5, elaborated during his stay in Rome. These experiences will be a source of inspiration for his architectural production and theoretical assumptions, and they seem to be reflected in some works of the architect, as the Chandigarh Haute Cour of 1952.
