Abstract:
This paper focuses on the development of an interactive story book based on a Rungus children’s folk song (longoi tanganak). The book was developed to encourage children to express their ideas through storytelling, music and movement. This study aims to explore how an interactive book can be used in the music classroom and outlines ways in which music and movement can be integrated while reading a story. Field trips were conducted in Kudat and Pitas, Sabah to collect longoi tanganak from elderly Rungus singers recommended by village heads. Following that, a Sabah-based story was written and a song containing musical characteristics suitable for children’s singing activities were incorporated into the story. Finally, a survey was sent to 12 selected music teachers to answer the following questions: (1) What age group could use this storybook? (2) What genres of children’s literature do you use in your lessons? (3) How would you use this storybook in your music classroom? and (4) Why do you use children’s literature in your music lessons? In addition to that, two music teachers were selected from the pool of respondents and were video recorded teaching a music lesson that incorporated this story book. The results of this study revealed that children were highly engaged in the lesson, responding and actively participating in the reading of the story. This included vocal, movement and instrument exploration. Young children also learned extra skills in sign language and memorising words through the composed song, adapted from a Rungus longoi tanganak (children’s song). This product is an innovation that is suitable to be used as a teaching aid among preschool, kindergarten, and primary school children.

Abstract:
The Rungus are the indigenous people in Sabah, Malaysia. Malay as a second language and the primary instruction in schools seems inevitable. The study aims to determine the effects of reading strategies in the L2 reading comprehension tests on textual content and vocabulary. Participants consisted of twenty-six Form Four Rungus tribe pupils from Kudat Sikuati II Government Secondary School. The study used an ex-post facto research design. The researchers employed cognitive and metacognitive strategy questionnaires and two reading comprehension tests on L2 textual content and vocabulary. The researchers applied Cronbach alpha reliability statistics, paired sample test, and regression analysis. The study indicates that the L2 reading comprehension test on textual content and cognitive strategy were linearly related. Also, the factors related to L2 vocabulary in the reading comprehension test and metacognitive strategy are statistically significant. There is a very substantial relationship between past knowledge and reading comprehension among the participants. This study found that the use of cognitive strategies facilitates L2 reading comprehension with first language translation. The participants use translation strategies at a high level. However, they often use the metacognitive strategy more than the cognitive strategy. There is a significant positive relationship between metacognitive awareness and high-skilled readers’ performance. Low-level skilled readers choose the cognitive strategy. Meanwhile, the regression analysis between the L2 reading comprehension test on textual content and cognitive strategy revealed a positive association (β=.435) that is statistically significant (p<.05). The regression analysis between the L2 reading comprehension test on vocabulary and metacognitive strategy indicated a positive association (β=.440) and statistically significant (p<.05). Reading strategies facilitate students to understand the text, thereby improving their reading comprehension tasks. In addition to demonstrating positive implications on teaching students to read a second language, the findings are essential for teaching Malay language vocabulary. The schema theory employed in the study implicates that reading comprehension performance is generated from the interaction between top-down strategy (metacognitive) and bottom-up strategy (cognitive). A large-scale study could potentially reveal the use of translation strategy as a strategic trait associated with high-achievement readers or is, in fact, a bilingual additive.

Abstract:
Hypertension is the global disease burden and not only a major risk factor for stroke, but is also crucial risk factor for cognitive impairment and subsequently dementia. However, literature highlighting on cognitive functions is scarce in Malaysia. This study aimed to assess the hypertension and cognitive functions among the Rungus population in rural areas of Kudat, Sabah. A community based cross-sectional study was conducted among population aged 18 and above living in two villages of Kudat. A validated Malay version of Mini-Mental State Examination (M-MMSE) was used to assess cognitive function with cut-off point of 22. Socio-demographic data, risk behaviours (e.g. physical activity level, smoking status and alcohol consumption) and clinical characteristics (e.g. blood pressure, body mass index and waist circumference) were collected. Chi-square and regression model were used for data analysis. A total of 183 respondents participated in this study with a mean age of 44.64 ± 17.26. The prevalence of hypertension was 34.97% and mean score of MMSE was 24.19 ± 5.660. Age, education level, body mass index and waist circumference were significantly associated with hypertension. Hypertension was not significantly associated with cognitive impairment but instead significantly associated with lower performance of MMSE and its language domain. Therefore, comprehensive interventions should be emphasized to have better understandings on hypertension and prevent its damage to cognition.

Abstract:
In 2020, the School Innovation Project research grant was introduced by Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) with the aim of assisting teaching and learning activities at the school level. In general, the success of teaching and learning activities also depends on strengthening the mastery of local and foreign languages among students. The question is, the teaching and learning methods used by educators or teachers must also be accompanied by elements of innovation in order to encourage students to continue to excel in their studies. Therefore, this paper will discuss preliminary studies related to innovation elements based on local wisdom. Sekolah Kebangsaan Kanibongan was chosen as this pilot project in accordance with its location as a rural school. The research methodology is based on elements of local wisdom, which is one of the folk tales of the Rungus ethnic group. From these folk tales, several innovative activities have been organized including video screenings, storytelling and learning activities. The results of the study found that this kind of activity can further enrich the learning activities of students based on local wisdom. At the same time, students can also go through new experiences that are interactive and innovative in learning languages, including the national language.

Abstract:
Communication is the most important key to mastering this era of globalization. There is no denying that language is the most important part of communication. When one person uses the same language or understands another person's language, they can communicate well. Sign language is a language based on artificial communication, i.e. body language and lip movements during communication. This sign language is standardized as SIBI (Indonesian Sign Language System). SIBI is one of the media in the form of books that are able to communicate with deaf people in the community. Its shape is a systematic arrangement of groups of fingers, hands and various movements, symbolizing the word Indonesian. Book media does not seem to be easily understood by users, so it takes an application that can provide moving images to facilitate sign language learning, one of which is web-based.

Abstract:
This study aims to explain the communication model of deaf children in SLB B YAKUT Purwokerto, using a qualitative approach that is as a process that tries to get a better understanding of the complexity in interaction between humans. The results showed that in communicating, SLB B children prioritized verbal (oral) and non-verbal (gesture) languages. This can look good when in class or outside class. The events or the process of communicating the deaf with their fellow human beings and with normal people have their own uniqueness and distinctiveness because the deaf try to establish two existences. First, the existence of fellow deaf and existence in the eyes of normal people. Communication of deaf children, both deaf or with normal people, cannot be separated from communication elements, namely the messenger, message, channel and recipient of the message. Feedback can appear or not when the communication process occurs.

Abstract:
Responding to the common plea in medieval inscriptions to ráð rétt rúnar, to ‘interpret the runes correctly’, this thesis provides a series of contextual readings of the runic topos in Anglo-Saxon and Old Norse poetry. The first chapter looks at the use of runes in the Old English riddles, examining the connections between material riddles and certain strategies used in the Exeter Book, and suggesting that runes were associated with a self-referential and engaged form of reading. Chapter 2 seeks a rationale for the use of runic abbreviations in Old English manuscripts, and proposes a poetic association with unlocking and revealing, as represented in Bede’s story of Imma. Chapter 3 considers the use of runes for their ornamental value, using 'Solomon and Saturn I' and the rune poems as examples of texts which foreground the visual and material dimension of writing, whilst Chapter 4 compares the depiction of runes in the heroic poems of the Poetic Edda with epigraphical evidence from the Migration Age, seeking to dispel the idea that they reflect historical practice. The final chapter looks at the construction of a mythology of writing in the Edda, exploring the ways in which myth reflects the social impacts of literacy. Taken together these approaches highlight the importance of reading the runes in poetry as literary constructs, the script often functioning as a form of metawriting, used to explore the parameters of literacy, and to draw attention to the process of writing itself.

Abstract:
In language revitalisation movements the main impetus and passion is often provided by adults who, as second language speakers, have gained fluency in their heritage language. As parents and teachers these adults often have vital roles in the ongoing transmission of the heritage language. This study is based on interviews with thirty-two Māori adults who have each made a strong commitment to becoming a fluent speaker of Māori. The study posited that the informants would have a strongly-held worldview which enabled them to engage with and maintain a relationship with the Māori language. This worldview is expressed through a range of metaphors, the four most frequent being: LANGUAGE IS A PATH, LANGUAGE IS A CANOE, LANGUAGE IS FOOD, LANGUAGE LEARNER IS A PLANT. The worldview articulated by these metaphors has a quasi-religious nature and draws on elements of New Age humanism, a connection with Māori culture and ancestors as well as kaupapa Māori (Māori-orientated and controlled initiatives). The source domains for these metaphors are traced through a study of various Māori sources from the 19th century through to the present day. This study shows how exploitation of these metaphors has changed throughout this time period leading to their current exploitation by the newly-fluent informants. The metaphors preferred by the informants were contrasted with the prominent metaphor LANGUAGE IS A TREASURE, the entailments of which were found to be more relevant to the experience of native speakers. The informants' experience also contrasts with the focus of language planners in that the informants are more focussed on how the Māori language is important for them personally than how they contribute to the revitalisation of the Māori language. These findings have implications for the revitalisation of the Māori language and have relevance for other endangered languages.

Clapp, Amanda Louise. "Investigating cognitive control in language switching." Thesis, University of Exeter, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/10871/14106.

Full text
Abstract:
How do bi/multilinguals switch between languages so effectively that there is no obvious intrusion from the alternatives? One can examine this by comparing language selection with task selection, or language switching with task switching. This is the approach adopted in the first of two strands of research presented in this thesis. In task switching, providing advance warning of the task typically leads to a reduction in the performance ‘switch cost’, suggesting top-down biasing of task selection. It is not clear whether the language switch cost also reduces with preparation, partly because there have been very few attempts to examine preparation for a language switch, and partly because these attempts suffered from non-trivial methodological drawbacks. In Experiments 1-3 I used an optimised picture naming paradigm in which language changed unpredictably and was specified by a language cue presented at different intervals before the picture. Experiment 1, conducted on ‘unbalanced’ bilinguals, revealed some evidence of reduction in the language switch cost for naming times with preparation, but only when cue duration was short. In an attempt to further optimise the paradigm, in Experiment 2 the cue-stimulus interval (which was varied from trial to trial in Experiment 1), was varied over blocks instead. Visual cues were replaced with auditory cues – the latter also enabled a comparison between semantically transparent word cues (the spoken names of the languages) and less transparent cues (fragments of national anthems). Experiment 2 revealed a reduction in switch cost with preparation for naming latencies, but only in the second language; the first language showed the reverse. To examine whether the increase in switch cost with preparation in the first language could be due to unbalanced bilinguals biasing processing towards L2, balanced bilinguals were tested in Experiment 3. This revealed a robust reduction in switch cost in naming latencies for both languages, which was driven primarily by the trials with the anthem cues. However, in the error rates the switch cost increased with preparation interval, thus complicating the interpretation of the reduction observed for response times. Experiment 4 investigated whether preparation for a language switch elicits the electrophysiological patterns commonly found during preparation for a task switch – a switch-induced positive polarity Event-Related Potential (ERP) with a posterior scalp distribution. Contrary to a recent report of the absence of the posterior positivity in language switching, it was clearly present in the present EEG data. As in task switching, the amplitude of the posterior positivity predicted performance. The electrophysiological data suggest that preparation for a language switch and preparation for a task switch rely on highly overlapping control mechanisms. The behavioural data suggest that advance control can be effective in language switching, but perhaps not as effective as in task switching. Experiments 1-3 also examined the effect of stimulus associative history – whether the language used on the previous encounter with a given stimulus influenced performance on the current trial). Having previously named a given picture in the same language benefited overall performance, but did not do so more for switches than repeats. Thus, stimulus associative history does not seem to contribute to the language switch cost. The second strand of my research asked whether bilinguals can set themselves independently for speech vs. comprehension. Previous research has examined the cost of switching the language in output tasks and in input tasks. But, it is not clear whether one can apply separate control settings for input and output selection. To investigate this, I used a paradigm that combined switching languages for speech production and comprehension. My reasoning was that, if there is cross-talk between the control settings for input vs. output, performance in one pathway should benefit if the language selected for the other pathway is the same relative to when it is different: a ‘language match effect’. Conversely, if there is no cross-talk, there should not be a language match effect. In Experiment 5 bilinguals alternated predictably between naming numbers in their first and second language (in runs of 3 trials), whilst also having to semantically categorise spoken words which occasionally (and unpredictably) replaced the numbers. The language of the categorisation ‘probes’ varied over blocks of ~17 naming runs, but was constant within a block. The results showed a clear match effect in the input task (categorisation), but not the output task (naming). To examine the potential role of proficiency, Experiment 6 used the same paradigm to test unbalanced and balanced bilinguals. The pattern of results was qualitatively similar in both groups to that observed in Experiment 5: a language match effect confined to the input task. These results suggest ‘leakage’ from the output control settings into the input control settings.

Abstract:
The runic alphabet in the Viking Age (ca. 800-1100) only consisted of 16 characters. These did not cover the Rune-Swedish phoneme system. One of the runes, the so-called os-rune, was used for at least 8 different phonemes. By tradition it has been used to date Viking Age runic inscriptions in the Scandinavian countries. The present work investigates the phonetic and phonemic value of the os-rune in Rune-Swedish inscriptions on stone, altogether 1,745 instances in 961 inscriptions. On the basis of the analysis, the accepted view of the chronological value of the os-rune is assessed, and is found to be non-valid. The regional variations in the use of the os-rune are also studied, particularly in the context of individual rune-carvers, but also to see if any dialectal variation is discernable. It is found that there is a marked consistency in the use of the os-rune for either rounded or unrounded vowels. Inscriptions, where both uses occur, are concentrated to one small geographical area. There are also areas, where the use of the os-rune for rounded vowels is the rule.<br><p>Digitaliserad utgåva 2016, kompletterad med en lista över viktigare rättelser</p><br>De vikingatida runinskrifternas kronologi

Abstract:
This study explores uses of metaphor and metonymy related to the concept of anger in the American television series Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles from 2012. The theoretical framework of the study is Conceptual Metaphor Theory. The data consists of metaphors and metonymies in the verbal and the pictorial mode. The pictorial data are visual expressions of the type called pictorial runes. In both modes, the underlying conceptual metaphors are identified, and the results are then compared between modes. The main finding is that the verbal mode contains a greater variety of metaphorical expressions. Explanations suggested for differences found between modes are: different technical possibilities of the two modes; universality in the pictorial mode and language specific metaphors as well as universal ones in the verbal mode; a connection of pictorial and verbal data respectively to different genres within the series; and the different narrator roles between the two modes.

Abstract:
AbstractConducting simulation studies within a model-based framework is a complex process, in which many different concerns must be considered. Central tasks include the specification of the simulation model, the execution of simulation runs, the conduction of systematic simulation experiments, and the management and documentation of the model’s context. In this chapter, we look into how these concerns can be separated and handled by applying domain-specific languages (DSLs), that is, languages that are tailored to specific tasks in a specific application domain. We demonstrate and discuss the features of the approach by using the modelling language ML3, the experiment specification language SESSL, and PROV, a graph-based standard to describe the provenance information underlying the multi-stage process of model development.

Abstract:
Abstract Three aspects of Mathematica applications are addressed. The first is to use the symbolic language for simple mathematical operations, such as matrix algebra, root finding, spline curve-fit, and Runge-Kutta integration. The second is about graphic applications such as drawing curves, bar graph, labeling, and up to three-dimensional, hidden-line plotting. The third and most important aspect is to use the Mathematica C-type commands to define user’s problems which the students must master in order to apply Mathematica effectively.

Full text
Abstract:
The paper compares key life and spiritual experiences of St. Ignatius of Loyola with his literary works (the Spiritual Exercises, Constitutions and Spiritual Diary). It primarily focuses on events that influenced the “birth of a mystic” especially his stays in Loyola, Manresa and by the river of Cardoner. The paper also discusses a phenomenological description and interpretation of Ignatius’ spiritual metaphors and parables (God’s soldier – knight, life as a spiritual struggle, vocation as the call of the King, Christian life as a choice of Christ’s robe and its adornments). What is typical for Ignatius is that he radically shifted and spiritualized the semantics of this “secular” images. There is a spiritual theme that runs through Constitutions and which is based on a motif of spiritual love and not fear or discomfort. In Spiritual Diary Ignatius moves from spiritual metaphors and seeks new words to describe his mystical experience.

Full text
Abstract:
The implementation of an edge-based three-dimensional RANS equations solver for unstructured grids that runs on both central processing units (CPUs) and graphics processing units (GPUs) is presented. This CPU/GPU duality is kept without double-writing the code, reducing programming and maintenance costs. The GPU implementation is based on the standard OpenCL language. The code has been parallelized using MPI. Some turbomachinery benchmark cases are presented. For all cases, an order of magnitude reduction in computational time is achieved when the code is executed on GPUs instead of CPUs.

Abstract:
In the last decade, the emission of continuous bright white light by nanomaterials of metal oxides has been observed when excited with lasers in the near infrared region. However, the origin of this phenomenon of emission of continuous white light by upconversion of energy is not yet established. Therefore, in this work, we aimed at developing a quantitative model based on the power balance equation to describe this process considering thermal emission as the main mechanism for white light generation. The model was implemented in the Rates program, in Fortran language, to solve differential equations using the 4th order Runge-Kutta method with an adaptive time step. The results show that the proposed model is adequate for the description of the most relevant features of this phenomenon, which allows its use in the design of new materials and to improve experimental conditions.

International Joint Conferences on Artificial Intelligence Organization, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.24963/ijcai.2017/38.

Full text
Abstract:
For real-time programs reproducing a bug by rerunning the system is likely to fail, making fault localization a time-consuming process. Omniscient debugging is a technique that stores each run in such a way that it supports going backwards in time. However, the overhead of existing omniscient debugging implementations for languages like Java is so large that it cannot be effectively used in practice. In this paper, we show that for agent-oriented programming practical omniscient debugging is possible. We design a tracing mechanism for efficiently storing and exploring agent program runs. We are the first to demonstrate that this mechanism does not affect program runs by empirically establishing that the same tests succeed or fail. Usability is supported by a trace visualization method aimed at more effectively locating faults in agent programs.

Baader, Franz, and Benjamin Zarrieß. Verification of Golog Programs over Description Logic Actions. Technische Universität Dresden, 2013. http://dx.doi.org/10.25368/2022.198.

Full text
Abstract:
High-level action programming languages such as Golog have successfully been used to model the behavior of autonomous agents. In addition to a logic-based action formalism for describing the environment and the effects of basic actions, they enable the construction of complex actions using typical programming language constructs. To ensure that the execution of such complex actions leads to the desired behavior of the agent, one needs to specify the required properties in a formal way, and then verify that these requirements are met by any execution of the program. Due to the expressiveness of the action formalism underlying Golog (situation calculus), the verification problem for Golog programs is in general undecidable. Action formalisms based on Description Logic (DL) try to achieve decidability of inference problems such as the projection problem by restricting the expressiveness of the underlying base logic. However, until now these formalisms have not been used within Golog programs. In the present paper, we introduce a variant of Golog where basic actions are defined using such a DL-based formalism, and show that the verification problem for such programs is decidable. This improves on our previous work on verifying properties of infinite sequences of DL actions in that it considers (finite and infinite) sequences of DL actions that correspond to (terminating and non-terminating) runs of a Golog program rather than just infinite sequences accepted by a Büchi automaton abstracting the program.
