This chapter examines the culture of the farmers of Hancock County, which was shaped in several ways by their rural lifestyles. First, work assignments were divided among family members by gender, with women performing the bulk of household production and raising small livestock while men tilled fields, hunted for local game, herded sheep, and harvested apples. To fit into the factory systems, these rural people would have to adapt to a new set of gender roles of the rising industries of the early twentieth century. Second, successful farming required a wide spectrum of skills that enabled farmers to coax a living out of their fields and forests. These skills would prove useful in making ends meet even after they started to draw paychecks from local factories. Finally, the farmers exhibited a preference for local autonomy, self-government, and independence from distant powers. Their ideals of self-reliance and independence in turn shaped their politics.

This chapter examines how folk paper-cuts have served as a site of intellectual expressions and debates about the meanings of—and the entangled relationships between—culture, gender, history, and the state in modern China. It first takes up the question of folk traditions, gender, and modernity before discussing the practice of paper-cutting in the Yan'an period (1937–1947) and in the late 1970s. It then considers how gender figures in the narrative of the folk cultural form of paper-cuts in Yan'an and its later deployment by urban intellectuals in various nationalist campaigns. In particular, it looks at women paper-cutting artists in contemporary Ansai County and describes how folk paper-cuts have become that “site of awkward engagement” where the agenda of the state, global capital regimes of values, and local tradition forces interacted with each other. The chapter suggests that, through the representation of paper-cuts, the binary oppositions of gender and rural–urban divide have become part of the meanings of Chinese modernity itself.

Galician audio/visual culture has experienced an unprecedented period of growth following the process of political and cultural devolution in post-Franco Spain. This creative explosion has occurred in a productive dialogue with global currents and with considerable projection beyond the geopolitical boundaries of the nation and the state, but these seismic changes are only beginning to be the subject of attention of cultural and media studies. This book examines contemporary audio/visual production in Galicia as privileged channels through which modern Galician cultural identities have been imagined, constructed and consumed, both at home and abroad. The cultural redefinition of Galicia in the global age is explored through different media texts (popular music, cinema, video) which cross established boundaries and deterritorialise new border zones where tradition and modernity dissolve, generating creative tensions between the urban and the rural, the local and the global, the real and the imagined. The book aims for the deperipheralization and deterritorialization of the Galician cultural map by overcoming long-established hegemonic exclusions, whether based on language, discipline, genre, gender, origins, or territorial demarcation, while aiming to disjoint the center/periphery dichotomy that has relegated Galician culture to the margins. In essence, it is an attempt to resituate Galicia and Galician studies out of the periphery and open them to the world.

The concept of place is integral to country music, a genre associated with geographic regions, rural landscapes, and community values. While the genre has traditionally been described as a product of rural communities of the US South, studies have demonstrated the role that urban communities played in the birth of country music and its prominent scenes. Despite the growing interest in the relationship between music and place, many studies overlooked the important role that place-themed songs play in constructing an artist’s persona. With Canadian alt-country artist Corb Lund as a case study, this study draws literature from musicology, literary studies, and cultural geography to demonstrate how the singer-songwriter describes life, work, and sociocultural issues in Alberta to create diverse conceptions of place. It develops a framework for considering how artists use music to negotiate relationships to place and construct elements of their “geo-cultural” identity.

This book examines how mobile telephony contributes to social change in rural India (West Bengal, Bankura district) on the basis of long-term ethnographic fieldwork in a village before and after the introduction of mobile phones. The book investigates how mobile telephones emerged as multidimensional objects that not only enable telephone conversations, but also facilitate status aspirations, internet access, and entertainment practices. It explores how this multifaceted use of mobile phones has influenced economic, political, and social relationships, including gender relationships, and how these new social constellations relate to culture and development. The book examines social institutions as culturally constructed spheres tied to translocal processes that, nevertheless, have local meanings. The author delves into social and cultural changes to examine agency and power relationships: Who benefits from mobile telephony and how? Can people use mobile phones to further their aims to change their lives, or does phone use merely amplify existing social patterns and power relationships? Can mobile telephony induce development? Using a holistic ethnographic approach, the book develops a framework to understand how new media mediates social processes within interrelated social spheres and local hierarchies. It delves into mobile phone use as a multidimensional process with diverse impacts by exploring how media-saturated forms of interaction relate to preexisting contexts.

This book argues that unique rural cultural dynamics shape women’s experiences of incarceration and release from prison in the remote, predominantly white communities that many Americans still think of as “the Western frontier.” Together, these dynamics comprise an architecture of gendered violence, a theoretical lens applicable to women’s experiences of prison throughout the United States in its focus on how the synchronous operations of addiction and compromised mental health, poverty, fraught relationships, and felony-related discrimination undergird women’s lives. The architecture of gendered violence that comprises the primary pathway to incarceration among the Wyoming women in this study reflects the way the suite of concerns facing currently and formerly incarcerated women throughout the United States manifests in a remote rural context far from the coastal metropolises that dominate the production of criminal justice discourse and scholarship.

This chapter examines the hybrid origins of Hong Kong's Huangmei opera film. It shows how the Chinese Communist Party's demand for a cinema showcasing the national cultural past paradoxically facilitated the cross-border circulation of an indigenous, vernacular operatic tradition—featuring feisty rural women, female voice-over chanting, and frequent cross-dressing—into the modernizing idioms of Hong Kong's film industry. Under colonial suppression of local nationalist objectives, the resulting hybridized genre carried a vital female imaginary in nostalgic Chinese wrappings. In contrast to Indian cinema's culture of emotion, female performativity contests Chinese conventions of restraint, opening up imaginary female power. This is supported by the impact of the female voice on point-of-view shooting, spatial organization, and narrative structure, foregrounding, against Western feminism's focus on the male gaze, a female counter-gaze within a patriarchal drama of conflicting desires.

Helen O’Shea asserts that ‘Irish’ and ‘queer’ are mutually exclusive identifications in the discourse of Irish nationalism and Irish traditional arts. If indigenous Irish cultural practices are indeed devoid of queerness, how can queer dancers working within these forms make sense of their role as both cultural exponents and sexual and gender outsiders? Embodying alterity within idioms historically touted as the representation of essentialized Irishness, how do queer Irish step dancers negotiate their queerness through a dance form historically cast so close to the heteronormative heart of rural Ireland? This chapter queries the experience of the author to excavate nascent queerness within Irish traditional dance practice. Drawing upon his fifteen years of performance and ethnography with many of the luminaries of traditional Irish music and dance, the essay offers a queer reimagining of contemporary performance conventions of Irish step dance, revealing insights into the form’s ethnology and proposing new possibilities for Irish dance as a polysemic means of cultural and personal expression.

This book investigates how the intimate lives of Italians were transformed during the post-war ‘economic miracle’ of the 1950s and 1960s, during which millions of Italians migrated to the cities, leaving behind rural ways of life and transforming how people thought about love, marriage, gender, and family. At the core of this book lies the investigation of almost 150 unpublished diaries and memoirs written by ordinary men and women who were growing up and coming of age during these years. The book weaves these personal stories together with the Italian popular culture of the time, which was saturated with both new and old ideas of romance. Films and magazines encouraged young Italians to put romantic love and individual desire over family, contributing to changing expectations about marriage, and sometimes tensions within families. At the same time popular love stories were frequently laced with jealousy, hinting at the darker emotions that were linked, in many minds, to love. Through its exploration of courtship, marriage, honour crime, forced marriage, jealousy, and marriage breakdown, this book traces the ways in which the lives both of individuals and of the nation itself were shaped by changing understandings of romantic love and its darker companions, honour and jealousy.

The chapter provides insights into the different characteristics and manifestations of energy poverty—a condition that prevents the achievement of socially and materially necessary levels of domestic energy services. On the one hand, the discourse on energy poverty in developed countries (known as “fuel poverty”) is discussed (especially in the European Union), focusing on different forms of definitions and measurement, coping strategies, and attempts to combat the problem. On the other hand, the discourse on energy poverty in developing countries is outlined, highlighting especially rural electrification processes and gender relations. It is shown that energy poverty is deeply embedded in wider social, economic, political, and cultural structures, reflecting inequalities both within and across nations. Therefore, the chapter concludes that measures and interventions to tackle energy poverty must take into account wider societal structures and power relations in order to achieve a just and sustainable energy system and society.

This work argues that congregational and local denominational schisms among Baptists, Methodists, and Presbyterians in the border state of Missouri before, during, and after the Civil War were central to the crisis of the Union, Civil War, and Reconstruction. Employing an array of approaches that examine these ecclesiastical fractures beyond the customary antebellum temporal scope of analysis, and as a local phenomenon, this study maintains that the schisms were interlinked religious, sociocultural, legal, and political developments rife with implications for the transformation of evangelicalism and the United States in that period and to the end of Reconstruction. The evangelical disruptions in Missouri were grounded in divergent moral and political understandings of slavery, abolitionism, secession, and disloyalty. Publicly articulated by factional litigation over church property and a combative evangelical print culture, the schisms were complicated by race, class, and gender dynamics that arrayed the contending interests of white middle-class women and men, rural churchgoers, and African American congregants. These ruptures forged antagonistic northern and southern evangelical worldviews that increased antebellum sectarian strife and violence, energized the notorious guerrilla conflict that gripped Missouri through the Civil War, and fueled postwar vigilantism between opponents and proponents of emancipation. As such, the schisms produced the intertwined religious, legal, and constitutional controversies that shaped pro- and antislavery evangelical contention before 1861, wartime Radical rule, and the rise and fall of Reconstruction.

Using Colombia as a case study, this chapter focuses on women and land rights in post-conflict societies. It begins with a brief history of land rights for women in Colombia both before and during the conflict and explores the roots of Colombia’s protracted armed conflict in unequal land distribution policies and peasant exploitation. The chapter describes challenges associated with land restitution in Colombia through an examination of the successes and challenges of the Victims and Land Restitution Law. It focuses on gendered obstacles related to security and local governance, the general informality in land tenure, and patriarchal practices and culture in rural society. The chapter closes with a call for an increased focus on women’s economic and social rights in transitional societies and articulates a vision of restitution laws as having the potential for transformative, forward-looking change.

This book argues that depression-era authors contributed to the development of modern environmental thought in three distinct ways. First, they began recognizing as never before the devastating and even apocalyptic effects that humans can have on the environment, particularly in response to the period’s dust storms, flooding, and other human-created ecological disasters. Next, they acknowledged the ecological importance of nonhuman nature, including animal “predators” and “pests,” as conservationists were beginning to do during the period. And lastly, they laid the groundwork for what we now refer to as “environmental justice” by directly connecting environmental exploitation with racial, economic, and gender inequality. To illustrate the reach of environmental thought during the period, the first three chapters of the book focus on different geographical landscapes, including the wilderness, rural, and urban. The last chapter examines the period’s growing concern over the effects of technology on the human and nonhuman world. Ultimately, The Green Depression illustrates the importance of depression-era literature to the development of the modern environmentalist and environmental justice movements. It also contributes to a growing body of scholarship that identifies the importance of environmental thought to the literature and culture of African Americans and other minority groups as well as in considering urban landscapes and other built environments. Finally, the book seeks to initiate a conversation to consider how experiences and ideas from the period have influenced and can inform responses to the intersections of environmental, social, and economic issues in our own time.

This book examines the central role that the picturesque, a popular mode of scenery appreciation that advocated for an improved and manipulated natural landscape, played in the social, spatial, and literary history of mid-nineteenth-century America. It argues that the picturesque was not simply a landscape aesthetic, but also a discipline of seeing and imaginatively shaping the natural world that was widely embraced by bourgeois Americans to transform the national landscape in their own image. Through the picturesque, midcentury bourgeois Americans remade rural spaces into tourist scenery, celebrated the city streets as spaces of cultural diversity, created new urban public parks, and made suburban domesticity a national ideal. This picturesque transformation was promulgated in a variety of popular literary genres, all of which focused on landscape description and inculcated readers into the protocols of picturesque visual discipline as social reform. Many of these genres have since been dubbed “minor” or have even been forgotten in our literary history, but the ranks of the writers of this picturesque literature include those from the most canonical (Hawthorne, Melville, Thoreau, Emerson, and Poe) to major authors of the period who are now less familiar to us (such as Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, Lydia Maria Child, Nathaniel Parker Willis, and Margaret Fuller) to those who are now completely forgotten. Individual chapters of the book link picturesque literary genres to the spaces that the genres helped to transform and, in the process, create what is recognizably our modern American landscape.

A history of epidemics and disease prevention in eighteenth- and early nineteenth-century Mexico, Enlightened Immunity focuses on the multiethnic and multimedia production of medical knowledge in a time when the governance of healthy populations was central to the pursuits of absolutist monarchies. The book reconstructs the cultural, ritual, and political background of Mexico’s early experiments with childhood vaccines, tracing how the public health response to epidemic disease was thoroughly enmeshed with religion and the church, the spread of Enlightenment ideas about medicine and the body, and the customs and healing practices of indigenous villages. It was not only educated urban elites—doctors and men of science—whose response to outbreaks of disease mattered. Former chief CNN India correspondent and award-wining journalist Ravi Agrawal takes readers on a journey across the Subcontinent, through its remote rural villages and its massive metropolises, seeking out the nexuses of change created by smartphones, and with them connection to the internet. As always with India, the numbers are staggering: in 2000, 20 million Indians had access to the internet; by 2017, 465 million were online, with three Indians discovering the internet every second. By 2020, India's online community is projected to exceed 700 million, and more than a billion Indians are expected to be online by 2025. In the course of a single generation, access to the internet has progressed from dial-up connections on PCs, to broadband access, wireless, and now 4G data on phones. The rise of low-cost smartphones and cheap data plans has meant the country leapfrogged the baby steps their Western counterparts took toward digital fluency. The results can be felt in every sphere of life, upending traditions and customs and challenging conventions. Nothing is untouched, from arranged marriages to social status to business start-ups, as smartphones move the entire economy from cash-based to credit-based. Access to the internet is affecting the progress of progress itself. As Agrawal shows, while they offer immediate and sometimes mind-altering access to so much for so many, smartphones create no immediate utopia in a culture still driven by poverty, a caste system, gender inequality, illiteracy, and income disparity. Internet access has provided greater opportunities to women and changed the way in which India's many illiterate poor can interact with the world, but it has also meant that pornography has become more readily available. Under a government keen to control content, it has created tensions. And in a climate of hypernationalism, it has fomented violence and even terrorism. The influence of smartphones on "the world's largest democracy" is nonetheless pervasive and irreversible, and India Connected reveals both its dimensions and its implications.

El libro: Interaccionismo Sinérgico de Enfoques Educativos e Investigativos: Visión Estratégica en la Academia Posmoderna, de la colección: Entresijos de Saberes en Praxis Educativa, de la Unidad de Publicaciones de la Universidad Pedagógica Experimental Libertador – Instituto Pedagógico Rural “Gervasio Rubio” (UPEL-IPRGR), en colaboración con el Fondo Editorial Universidad Pedagógica Experimental Libertador (FEDUPEL), es el resultado del trabajo investigativo y colaborativo en distintas líneas de investigación, así como de docentes y universidades, que movidos por el deseo de aportar visiones alternativas sobre las problemáticas que se presentan a diario en el ámbito educativo, brindan propuestas para mejorarla, hacer la praxis pedagógica creativa, diversa y actualizada al uso de las innovaciones tecnológicas que puedan adaptarse al quehacer educativo, lo que redundará en el crecimiento tanto de discentes, docentes y entorno sociocultural. La Integración de la participación de la política en la construcción de la cultura de paz desde la escuela, en el capítulo II, nos muestra a la escuela como el articulador en la ejecución de políticas públicas que facilitan la construcción de la cultura de paz, incorporando estrategias donde la paz sea el eje principal, donde los valores, las actitudes y los comportamientos, que lo fomentan, estén basados en el desarrollo del pensamiento crítico y la justicia social. En el III capítulo: Neuromitos en formación inicial docente. Una experiencia de aprendizaje desde la neurociencia, se hace una revisión acerca de los mitos que existen en cuanto a aprendizaje y neurociencia, así como al uso de la neuroeducación en la formación inicial docente, se propone el diseño de un plan de acción que diagnostica y desmitifica los neuromitos en estudiantes de pregrado, su relación con el cerebro, funcionamiento y el papel que juega en el aprendizaje del sujeto. El capítulo IV versa sobre la Realidad aumentada. Tecnología que promueve la formación para el emprendimiento e innovación en los estudiantes de educación secundaria, en el que se trata de comprender, la importancia de la integración de la realidad aumentada, como tecnología que promueve la Formación para el Emprendimiento y la Innovación, en estudiantes de educación secundaria, investigación realizada en el Liceo Bolivariano “Luís López Méndez” en Táriba, estado Táchira, Venezuela. En el capítulo V: Alianza universidad-empresa. Una experiencia socioeducativa y productiva a través de la investigación aplicada en el sector cacao. La investigación es acerca de la actividad social y productiva que se genera a través del cacao, el cual genera un conocimiento que se pone al servicio del sector productivo regional del Norte de Santander, Colombia. En él que se investiga sobre las características del producto, su origen, así como el contexto internacional, nacional y local en que se desarrolla; describiendo la experiencia de Somos Cacao SAS al producir y transformar el cacao en un producto de alto valor agregado. Capítulo VI: Interacción en los entornos virtuales. La clave para un proceso de enseñanza y aprendizaje significativo. Se adentra en la poca efectividad de los entornos virtuales para desarrollar los procesos de enseñanza en las instituciones educativas, lo que ha puesto al descubierto, el alarmante vacío en la interacción, docente-alumno, en la construcción de conocimiento. Esta investigación desvela la importancia de los actores presentes en el proceso educativo, en la formación en entornos virtuales para el logro de un aprendizaje significativo. Cerrando con el capítulo VII, se presenta la Sistematización de experiencias significativas desde la evaluación. Una perspectiva de los profesores para el aprendizaje contextualizado, trabajo que se basa en el bajo rendimiento escolar presente en la asignatura de matemática, se muestran los resultados del diagnóstico en profesores y estudiantes, en el área de matemática de primer año, investigación llevada a cabo en el Liceo Monseñor Sanmiguel, municipio San Cristóbal, Estado Táchira, sistematización que se efectúa través de sus opiniones sobre cómo se aplica la evaluación en el área de matemática. Finalmente, conviene destacar que los contenidos descritos y argumentados en los capítulos del libro son responsabilidad única y exclusiva de sus autores; por lo tanto, los Coordinadores, la Unidad de Publicaciones de UPEL-IPRGR, FEUPEL, y demás instituciones que apoyan la obra, actúan como un tercero de buena fe.
