Abstract:
The Asian Development Bank approved the additional financing for the Maharashtra Rural Connectivity Improvement Project in 2021 to help improve the rural road network and, consequently, the economic development of India’s Maharashtra State. To evaluate the impacts of the project, a baseline survey was conducted using structured interview formats before the project implementation, and an ex-post survey is planned upon project completion. This paper discusses the methodology for the project’s impact evaluation, summarizes the findings from the baseline survey, and introduces an assessment of lan

Shifting Grounds: Telling the Climate Migration Story in India is a guide produced by the Indian Institute for Human Settlements (IIHS) as part of the Climate Change Local Adaptation Pathways (CLAPs) project. It aims to support communicators, in development organisations, think tanks, and the media in navigating the complex and often overlooked connections between climate change and internal migration in India. Drawing on field research, expert interviews, and narrative analysis, the guide covers links between climate change-related events such as floods, droughts, and heatwaves, and internal

Abstract:
This report assesses how Indian ADB-backed projects to construct and upgrade some 45,000 km of rural roads are improving connectivity, opening socioeconomic opportunities, and transforming communities. The report shows how cost-effective, climate resilient road designs are being integrated into India’s flagship rural roads program Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadhak Yojana (PMGSY) and underscores the advantages of a more decentralized approach and operational reforms. It highlights how the better health and education outcomes and increased women’s employment generated by the projects are helping reduce

This paper addresses COVID-19 in India, looking at how the interplay of inequality, vulnerability, and the pandemic has compounded uncertainties for poor and marginalised groups, leading to insecurity, stigma and a severe loss of livelihoods. A strict government lockdown destroyed the incomes of farmers and urban informal workers and triggered an exodus of migrant workers from Indian cities, a mass movement which placed additional pressures on the country's rural communities. Elsewhere in the country, lockdown restrictions and pandemic response have coincided with heatwaves, floods and cyclone

Abstract:
Between 1972 and 2014, in Northern Tamil Nadu (NTN), India, the Green Revolution (GR) in agriculture was studied through five rounds of village-level studies (VLS). Over the decades, the number of villages dwindled; from 11, rigorously and randomly selected (together with a ‘Slater’ village first studied in 1916), through to a set of three villages in a rural–urban complex around a market town, to one of the original eleven, in the fifth round. During the reorganisation of districts in 1989, the villages sited on the Coromandel plain shifted administratively from North Arcot, a vanguard GR dis

Abstract:
This paper on women’s labor market participation in rural India highlights the crucial role of socioeconomic context in shaping the impact of marriage and childbirth. The paper analyzes women’s labor market trajectories from age 15 onward. It finds that marriage leads to a significant and sustained increase in women’s labor supply, particularly in informal agricultural work. This increase is more pronounced among women from poorer households and those with working mothers. Notably, childbirth does not negatively impact labor supply; this differs from findings in higher-income countries. The au
