Abstract:
The study aims to evaluate the performance of Random Forest algorithms in data mining education by optimizing graduation on-time (GOT) predictions using imbalanced data methods. Methods used to handle imbalanced data include random under-sampling (RUS), random over-sampling (ROS), hybrids of RUS and ROS, synthetic minority over-sampling techniques for nominal classes (SMOTE-NC), and hybrids of SMOTE-NC and RUS. After applying these methods, studies analyze their performance on training and testing data. The research findings show that on training data, the RUS-ROS hybrid showed the best performance compared to other methods, while the SMOTENC and RUS hybrid techniques showed the best performance on testing data based on AUC values. The research showed that the use of an imbalanced data method significantly improved the ability of Random Forest algorithms to predict graduation on time (GOT) in the context of educational data. We discuss the implications for educational data mining applications and provide suggestions for future research.

Abstract:
We examined the effect of anaphylactic shock on the longitudinal distribution of pulmonary vascular resistance (PVR) in ragweed-sensitized dogs in which PVR was partitioned into an upstream arterial component (Rus) and a downstream venous and capillary component (Rds). We also assessed whether Rus and Rds would be reduced by pretreatment with histamine H1- and H2-receptor blocking agents and with cyclooxygenase and lipoxygenase pathway inhibitors. Anesthetized animals were examined on separate occasions 3 wk apart in which one of the treatments was randomly given. The pulmonary arterial occlusion technique was used to determine segmental pressure drops. During ragweed challenge, PVR increased ≈4 times compared with the preshock value (3.04 vs. 12.07 mmHg ⋅ l−1⋅ min; P< 0.05). Although both Rus and Rds increased postshock, the greatest relative increase occurred in Rds. None of the treatments reduced partitioned resistances compared with no treatment. Our results show that, under conditions of anaphylactic shock, increases in Rus and Rds could not be ascribed to release of histamine or products of the cyclooxygenase and lipoxygenase pathways.

Abstract:
Robert Ousterhout, the author of a magnificent book “Eastern Medieval Architecture. The Building Traditions of Bizantium and Neighboring Lands”, published by Oxford University Press in 2019, the remarkable scholar and generous friend, was so kind to mention in his C. V. on the sight of Penn University (Philadelphia, USA) that he had been the Visiting professor of the Moscow architectural Institute (State Academy), as well as simulteniously of the Hebrew University in Jerusalem, but he did not say that he had been awarded the degree of professor honoris causa by the academic council of MARHI. Unfortunately, his life in muscovite hostel, nevertheless we tried to do our best to provide the best possible accommodation in a “suit” with two rooms with a bathroom, had been radically different from the wonderful dwelling chosen for the visiting teaching stuff from MARHI in the University of Illinois. And Robert called our hostel “Gulag”. He had been joking probably. It is impossible to overestimate the role of professor Robert Ousterhaut in the studies of the history of Byzantine art. At the present day he is the leader in the world studies of the architecture of Byzantium, the real heir of the great Rihard Krauthaimer and Slobodan Curcic, whom he had left behind in his works. His books are known very well in Russia. R. Ousterhaut graduated in the history of art and architecture at the University of Oregon, the Institute of European Studies in Vienna, Universities of Cincinati and Illinois. Не worked at the department of history of art at the University of Oregon, department of history of architecture at the University of Illinois, had the chair of the history of architecture and preservation at the University of Illinois, which is considered, as we know, one of the twenty best American universities. He always worked hard and with success. When I had finished reading my course of the history of Russian architecture at Illinois, he said: “Yes, next term the students are to be treated well…” Now he is professor emeritus of the history of art in the famous Penn University. He taught the courses of the “History of architecture from Prehistory to 1400” and “Eastern medieval architecture” as well as led remarkable seminars devoted to the different problem of the history of architecture of the Eastern Meditarenian, including the art of Constantinopole, Cappadoce, meaning and identity in medieval art. His remarkable 4-years field work at Cappadoce, which he described in several books, and his efforts of the preservation of the architectural monuments of Constantinopole are very valuable, Among his books one certainly must cite Holy Apostels: Lost Monument and Forgotten Project, (Washingtone, D. C., 2020); Visualizing Community: Art Material Culture, and Settlement in Byzantine Cappadocia, Dumbarton Oaks Studies 46 (Washington, D. C., 2017); Carie Camii (Istambul, 2011); Architecture of the Sacred: Space, Ritual, and Experience from Classical Greece to Byzantium (Cambridge University Press, 2012), ed. with Bonna D. Wescoat; Palmyra 1885: The Wolfe Expedition and the Photographs of John Henry Haynes, with B. Anderson (Istanbul: Cornucopia, 2016) John Henry Haynes: Archaeologist and Photographer in the Ottoman Empire 1881–1900 (2nd revised edition, Istanbul: Cornucopia, 2016). Several of his books were reprinted. He edited Approaches to Architecture and Its Decoration: Festschrift for Slobodan Ćurčić (Aldershot: Ashgate, 2012), with M. Johnson and A. Papalexandrou. His outstanding book Мaster Builders of Byzantium (2nd paperback edition, University of Pennsylvania Museum Publications, 2008) was translated into Russian and Turkish. In this work Robert Ousterhaut for the first time in English speaking tradition is regarding the architecture of Bazantium from the point of view of building art and technology. On the base of the analysis of primary written sources, contemporary archeology data, and careful study of existing monuments the author concludes that the Byzantine architecture was not only exploiting the traditions, but was trying to find new ways of the development of typology and construction techniques, which led to transformation of artistique features. Professor R. Ousterhaut discusses the choice of building materials, structure from foundations to vaults, theoretical problems which solved the master masons of Byzantium. In his recent book Eastern Medieval Architecture: The Building Traditions of Byzantium and Neighboring Lands, (Oxford University Press, 2019) Robert Ousterhaut is going further. He writes in the introduction: “I succeded my mentor at the University of Illinois… I had the privilege and challenge of teaching “Early Christian and Byzantine Architecture” to generations of the architecture students inspired my 1999 book, Master Builders of Byzantium. The work of Robert Ousterhaut, published 2019, is the new and full interpretation of the architectural heritage of Byzantine Commonwealth. The author devoted the first part of his book to Late Antiquity (3–7 centuries), beginning with the relations of Domus Ecclesiastae and Church Basilica, then speaking of Konstantinopole and Jerusalem of the times of St. Constantine the Great, liturgy, inspiration, commemoration and pilgrimage, adoration of relics as ritual factors which influenced the formation of sacred space, methods and materials, chosen by the Bizantine builders with their interaction of the mentality of the East and West. Special attention is given to dwelling, urban planning and fortification Naturally a chapter is devoted to Hagia Sophia and the building programs of Emperor Justinian. The second part speaks of the transition to what is called Middle Byzantine architecture both in the capital and at the edges of the Empire. The third part tells the story of the 9th, 10th and 11th centuries and includes the rise of the monasteries, once more secular and urban architecture, the craft of church builders. Churches of Greece and Macedonia, Anatolia, Armenia and Georgia, as well as of the West of Byzantium – Venice, Southern Italy and Sicily. The chapter is devoted to Slavonic Balkans – Bulgaria and Serbia and Kievan Rus. The last fourth part of the book describes the times of the Latin Empire, difficult for Byzantium, to the novelty of the architecture of Palewologos and the development of Byzantine ideas in the Balkans and especially in the building programs of the great powers of the epoch Ottoman Empire and Russia. There is a lot more to say about the book of professor Robert Ousterhaut, but we have to leave this to the next issue of this magazine, and better give the space to the words of the author – his text on the architecture of Kievan Rus.

Abstract:
Abstract Objective The study sought to assess awareness, perceptions, and value of telehealth in primary care from the perspective of patients. Materials and Methods We conducted a cross-sectional, Web-based survey of adults with access to telehealth services who visited healthcare providers for any of the 20 most-commonly seen diagnoses during telehealth visits. Three groups were studied: registered users (RUs) of telehealth had completed a LiveHealth Online (a health plan telehealth service provider) visit, registered nonusers (RNUs) registered for LiveHealth Online but had not conducted a visit, and nonregistered nonusers (NRNUs) completed neither step. Results Of 32 831 patients invited, 3219 (9.8%) responded and 766 met eligibility criteria and completed surveys: 390 (51%) RUs, 117 (15%) RNUs, and 259 (34%) NRNUs. RUs were least likely to have a primary care usual source of care (65.6% vs 78.6% for RNUs vs 80.0% for NRNUs; P < .001). Nearly half (46.8%) of RUs were unable to get an appointment with their doctor, and 34.8% indicated that their doctor’s office was closed. Among the 3 groups, RUs were most likely to be employed (89.5% vs 88.9% vs 82.2%; P = .007), have post–high school education (94.4% vs 93.2% vs 86.5%; P = .003), and live in urban areas (81.0% vs 69.2% vs 76.0%; P = .021). Conclusions Telehealth users reported that they relied on live video for enhanced access and were less connected to primary care than nonusers were. Telehealth may expand service access but risks further fragmentation of care and undermining of the primary care function absent better coordination and information sharing with usual sources of patients’ care.

Abstract:

Abstract:
In the wake of the recent wave of interest in the ties between Early Rus and the Latin world, this dissertation investigates conceptions and depictions of Latin Christians in Early Rusian texts. Unlike previous smaller-scale studies, the present study takes into consideration all indigenous Early Rusian narrative sources which make reference to Latins or the Latin world. Its contribution is twofold. Firstly, it overturns the still prevalent assumption that Early Rusian writers tended to portray Latins as religious Others. There was certainly a place in Early Rusian writing for religious polemic against the Latin faith, but as I show, this place was very restricted. Secondly, having established the considerable diversity and complexity of rhetorical approaches to Latins, this study analyses and explains rhetorical patterns in Early Rusian portrayals of Latins and Latin Christendom. Scholars have tended to interpret these patterns as primarily influenced by extra-textual factors (most often, a text’s time of composition). This study, however, establishes that textual factors—specifically genre and theme—are the best predictors of a text’s portrayal of Latins, and explains the appearance and evolution of particular generic and thematic representations. It also demonstrates that a text’s place of composition tends to have a greater influence on its depictions of Latins than its time of composition. Through close engagement with the subtleties and ambiguities of Early Rusian depictions of Latins, this study furthers contemporary debate on questions of narrative, identity and difference in Rus and the medieval world.

Viral infections affect every living organism. Health care programs and vaccines have been developed to control and prevent those infections, but there is still the occurrence of severe diseases and with great social-economic importance, whose only alternative is the treatment with antivirals drugs. Those compounds possess different mechanisms of action and are specific for each virus. Nevertheless, with many viruses resistant strains rise, a growing interest in novel antivirals development or in the improvement of existing drugs have been observed. In the last few years, antimicrobial peptides have shown antiviral activities making them candidates for antiviral drugs. The present study aimed to evaluate the possible antiviral activities of synthetic peptides clavanin MO, LL-37, Cn-AMP1 and variants of the Pa-MAP1 against HSV-1 and the Aichivirus replication. The peptides cytotoxic effects against Vero cells were evaluated by MTT method, whereas the clavanin MO, the Pa-MAP 1.8 and Pa-MAP 18br showed more cytotoxicity, with concentrations higher than 15,4 ??M and 12 ??M, respectively. Considering the antivirals assays, it was observed that the peptide Pa-MAP 1 causes 90 % of HSV-1 replication, with a SI higher than 4.8 and a virucidal mechanism of action, but null against the Aichivirus. Futhermore LL- 37 presented 90 % of Aichivirus inhibition, with a SI of 3.4. Others peptides tested showed percentages below 41 %. Future studies are need in order to elucidate which HSV-1 structure does Pa-MAP1 interacts and futher extend to in vivo tests. In summary, this study it is the first one to describe antiviral tests for the treatment of the Aichivirus infection.

The Santa Catarina State University built a flight simulator based on 6-DoF axisymmetric parallel robot which incorporates virtual reality immersion environment. This flight simulator presents 6-RUS kinematic chain which is the second most common architecture for this application. Hunt proposed this chain architecture early in 1983. Parallel robots are closed-loop mechanisms that present good performance in terms of accuracy, rigidity and ability to manipulate large loads. This work aims to optimize a 6- RUS parallel robot to determine the optimal active joints locations (position and orientation) for a flight simulation task using a PSO (Particle Swarm Optimization) algorithm to escape from local minima and an Interior Point algorithm to accelerate the search for the optimum in the region indicated by PSO i.e. Interior Point algorithm work to find bottom of the valley indicated by PSO.

Abstract:
Abstract The Offshore Wind sector is seeking to utilise Robotic and Uncrewed Systems (RUS) to help reduce the costs, emissions, and risks of harm to personal associated with the necessary survey and inspection works required over the whole life of fixed and floating offshore wind farms. New wind energy projects are being built in locations further from onshore support bases than previously, and this can impact the level of accessibility for routine and unplanned works, leading to increased use of offshore support vessels and a drive towards automating tasks if possible. The purpose of this paper is to provide an overview of RUS technology to give potential adopters and end-users insight into how and why different RUS types may be required (working individually or cooperatively) across the whole life of a wind farm. A review was conducted of the available RUS technology and its suitability for different tasks encountered throughout the initial development, construction, operation, and decommissioning of offshore wind farms. Uncrewed Surface Vehicles were identified as being both well-established multi-purpose data gathering platforms as well as being able to support other RUS above and below the waterline for survey and inspection roles, and considered that this RUS type represents a vital asset for the offshore wind farms of the future.

Abstract:

Cipriani, Marco, Thomas M. Eisenbach, and Anna Kovner. Tracing Bank Runs in Real Time. Federal Reserve Bank of New York, May 2024. http://dx.doi.org/10.59576/sr.1104.

Full text
Abstract:
We use high-frequency interbank payments data to trace deposit flows in March 2023 and identify twenty-two banks that suffered a run—significantly more than the two that failed but fewer than the number that experienced large negative stock returns. The runs were driven by large (institutional) depositors, rather than many small (retail) depositors. While the runs were related to weak fundamentals, we find evidence for the importance of coordination because run banks were disproportionately publicly traded and many banks with similarly bad fundamentals did not suffer a run. Banks that survived a run did so by borrowing new funds and then raising deposit rates—not by selling liquid securities.

Runs and Flights to Safety: Are Stablecoins the New Money Market Funds? Federal Reserve Bank of New York, September 2023. http://dx.doi.org/10.59576/sr.1073.

Full text
Abstract:
Stablecoins and money market funds both seek to provide investors with safe, money-like assets but are vulnerable to runs in times of stress. In this paper, we investigate similarities and differences between the two, comparing investor behavior during the stablecoin runs of 2022 and 2023 to investor behavior during the money market fund runs of 2008 and 2020. We document that, similarly to money market fund investors, stablecoin investors engage in flight to safety, with net flows from riskier to safer stablecoins during run periods. However, whereas in money market funds, run risk has historically materialized only in prime funds, with stablecoins, runs occurred in different stablecoin types across the 2022 and 2023 episodes. We also show that, similarly to intrafamily flows in money market funds, stablecoin flows tend to be within blockchains. Finally, for stablecoins, we estimate a discrete “break-the-buck” threshold of $0.99, below which redemptions accelerate.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Docker is a tool designed to make it easier to create, deploy, and run applications by using containers. Containers allow a developer to package and ship out an application with all of the parts it needs, such as libraries and other dependencies. Herein, we investigate using a Docker image to deploy and run our Robot Operating System (ROS)–based payload on a robot platform. Ultimately, this would allow us to quickly and efficiently deploy our payload on multiple platforms.

Full text
Abstract:
This study has evaluated the ability of commercially available clamp-on ultrasonic meters (USMs) to diagnose natural gas flow conditions that can produce measurement errors in traditional natural gas meters, and quantify the errors in measurements made with traditional metering technologies under these conditions. Commercially available clamp-on meters were tested in a fully developed, steady flow downstream of a high-performance flow conditioner to evaluate their measurement repeatability and reproducibility. The clamp-on meters were then installed on a conventional orifice meter run and an in-line ultrasonic meter run. Data were collected from all meters under ideal conditions and different adverse conditions, including an improperly installed orifice plate, orifice runs altered to simulate scale or dirt on the orifice plate and tube walls, and a partially plugged flow conditioner generating an asymmetric flow profile in the ultrasonic meter run.
