Yeats’s Blake criticism of the 1890s hinged on his knowledge of the esoteric and occult systems that he used as his framework for interpretation of the Romantic poet. This article examines The Works of William Blake: Poetic, Symbolic, and Critical (1893) and Yeats’s 1890s reviews of his contemporary Blake critics, as well as his relationship with the mystic poet and artist George William Russell (Æ), whom he repeatedly compared to Blake. Yeats’s emphasis on the importance of Boehme and Swedenborg in Blake’s system had a major influence on Blake’s critical legacy in the twentieth century, such

He was one of a small number of artists who developed interest in Maori culture during the 1940s and 1950s. He expanded interest into detailed study of Maori culture, and interaction with Maori, and produced a significant body of prints on this subject during his career. Taylor's prints were acclaimed during his lifetime, but in the decades after his death, his reputation faded to the extent that he became relatively obscure. This consensus is sometimes referred to as a neo-Darwinian synthesis, but that is misleading. A formal theory of adaptation and a phylogenetically controlled comparative method for analyzing adaptive states were lacking and developmental biology was left out. A neo-Darwinian synthesis combining all these approaches was not accomplished until the end of the 20th centu

It was in his dealings with the Faculty of Arts and Sciences (FAS) that Conant’s attempt to create a more meritocratic Harvard met its severest test. Out of this often tumultuous relationship came one of Harvard’s most influential academic innovations: a system for the appointment of tenured faculty that became standard practice in American universities. Conant inherited a faculty that was not necessarily the nation’s best.
