Abstract:
The article is devoted to the issues of organizing the supply of weapons from abroad to the Russian Empire during the First World War. In 1915, the Russian army lacked military equipment for its multimillion-dollar mobilized army. The pre-war reserve of 5 million Mosin rifles was not enough to conduct long-term hostilities. Therefore, the Russian military authorities were forced to resort to mass purchases of small arms abroad from both allies and neutral countries before the completion of the military mobilization of industry. However, a number of neutral Latin American countries (Brazil, Argentina) refused Russia military supplies, despite all the efforts made by the military and diplomats of the Russian empire.

Abstract:
The article deals with the Caucasian policy of the Volunteer army in the South and its role in international relations of the Armed forces of the South of Russia. The authors conclude that A. I. Denikin interacted with the British on Caucasian issues outside of the Russian political conference, since it had no influence on the international arena. Relations with independent Transcaucasian republics were complicated by the unwillingness of the leadership of the Volunteer army to recognize their statehood.

Abstract:
For the first time on the basis of archival materials, the article examines the issue of attracting Kalmyks to active military service in the 1920s as part of the Red Army units. From the middle of the 17th and almost to the end of the 18th century. Kalmyks participated in all the wars of Russia in their national military units as part of the Russian army, then - in the Patriotic War of 1812, the Civil War of 1918-1920. Therefore, with the creation of the Red Army on the basis of compulsory military service of citizens of Soviet Russia, difficulties arose with the recruitment of Kalmyks for military service due to low literacy and the language barrier, although their fighting qualities were not in doubt. The problems of conscription of Kalmyks for active military service were solved during the reform of the Red Army in the 1920s, which coincided with the economic, socio-political, cultural development of the Kalmyk Autonomous Region.

Abstract:
These days, teaching of military linguists, as well as providing them with the necessary information resources, is becoming increasingly important. Additionally, the Portuguese language is becoming more common and relevant in international communication in various spheres of human activity. Its role in Russia’s relations with Portuguese-speaking countries, especially with Brazil and Angola, is no less significant. Exchange programs, in which Russian students visit Portuguese-speaking countries, are becoming more and more popular. Citizens of these countries, in turn, also come to study in Russia to exchange not only language experience, but also knowledge in various fields. We would like to pay special attention to military translation in this work. Active cooperation between Russia and countries such as Brazil and Angola is currently taking place in the military sphere too. Thus, the Russian Federation’s military cooperation with these countries is not limited to the supply of various types of weapons and military equipment. For example, Angola takes an active part in two stages of the International army games “ArMI”, and Brazilian delegations observe the transparency of the military competitions. All these factors demonstrate the increasing relevance and prevalence of the Portuguese language in various fields of action. In order to provide for such activities and enable high-quality international communication, highly qualified translation staff who can work with texts of various topics and in negotiations related to any aspects is required. In this regard, we cannot do without sources that would have a sufficient volume of necessary terms that affect the issues of technical and military translation.

Pannacci, Raffaello. "ll nemico "rosso". I soldati sovietici nell'immaginario italiano e nella pratica della guerra combattuta. Campagna di Russia 1941-1943." MONDO CONTEMPORANEO, no. 1 (September 2020): 53–83. http://dx.doi.org/10.3280/mon2020-001002.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The subject of the article is the last period of General Aleksei Brusilov’s military activity – during the civil war as well as active service in the Red Army. Focus has been placed mainly on the years 1923–1924, when he served in the Soviet forces as General Inspector of the Cavalry, contributing to its increasing professionalization. Due to the lack of any studies on Brusilov in Polish, the author considered it necessary to present an outline of the general’s military career in the army of the Russian Empire until 1914, which gave the paper a more comprehensive character and made it possible to critically assess his command and organizational skills. A brief discussion of the evolution of General Brusilov’s image in historiography and USSR and Russian propaganda has also been included.

Main, Steven John. "Creation, organisation and work of the Red Army's political apparatus during the Civil War (1918-1920)." Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 1989. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/8314.

Full text
Abstract:
The main aim of this dissertation has been to examine the creation, organisation and work of the Red Army's Civil War political apparatus and assess its overall contribution to the Bolshevik war effort. To this end the dissertation itself consists of 4 main chapters and a number of appendices, detailing not only the work of the main political organs of the Red Army, but also the main personalities involved. The first chapter is an introductory chapter, examining the organ, which many Soviet historians have for a long time considered to be the Bolsheviks' first attempt at the creation of a centralised political organ for the Red Army, namely the Organisation-agitation department of the All-Russian Collegiate for the Formation and Organisation of the Red Army. The work carried out for the first chapter then leads to a discussion of the work of arguably the first real attempt by the Bolsheviks to create a properly functioning political organ specifically for the Red Army, namely the All-Russian Bureau of Military Commissars (VBVK). The chapter has been sub-divided into a number of sections, in order to allow a greater detailed examination of the work, personalities and difficulties that the central political apparatus faced in its attempts to exert some sort of control over the various constituent parts of the front political apparatus-the military commissars, the Party cells and the ever-increasing important political departments in the period 1918-1919. That VBVK was not to be a crowning success is revealed by the necessity that the Bolsheviks felt towards the beginning of 1919 to abolish VBVK and create arguably the centralised political organ of the Red Army during the Civil War period-the Political Administration of the Revolutionary Military Soviet of the Republic (PUR). Created in May 1919, PUR was to face many of the same problems that had beset VBVK a year or so earlier but, on the whole, coped with them better and political and cultural-educational work in the Red Army proceeded apace. The final, conclusive chapter brings all the threads together and assesses the claims made for the political work carried out in the front-line Red Army units during 1918-1920 and, whilst admitting that the Bolsheviks did spend much time on promoting the apparatus in a number of ways, the assertions made by generations of Soviet historians concerning the overall value of the political and cultural-educational work carried out in the Red Army are still too grandiose and that there is a lack of concrete evidence available, proving the worth of the political work carried out and its positive military consequences.

Abstract:
Napoleon’s Russian campaigns one of the best known examples of the impact of weather conditions on the process of military actions. In the article, on selected examples, the influence of weather on the actions and condition of both armies, mainly the Great Army, is analyzed. Adverse weather conditions accompanied the 1812 warfare from the very beginning in the form of a storm that took place at the turn of June and July. Then a period of intense heat began, which caused considerable problems for the soldiers moving in fast marches, who were also deprived of access to drinking water. Finally, the extremely cold winter, even for Russia’s climate, contributed, however not always directly, to deaths of many soldiers on both sides of conflict. Although weather is difficult to see as the main cause of Napoleon’s defeat, it was an extremely important part of 1812 military actions.

Abstract:
In the eastern part of the Warmian-Masurian Voivodeship, lies the Land of the Great Masurian Lakes. The line of these lakes during the First World War crossed the roads leading from the east into the German Reich, forcing the Russian army to circumvent it in 1914 and contributed to their defeat. In 1915, this entire natural defensive line was modernized and was ready for combat. However, in the interwar period it was additionally strengthened with a new fortification system. In 1940, the work started, in addition to expanding the existing fortificati on system, included the construction of a group of command posts for central state and military authorities (including headquarters for Adolf Hitler near Kętrzyn). In 1944, Germany prepared intensively for defense, expanding its fortification system, hoping that Masurian lakes would become the axis of defense. However, the nature of the combat operations in 1945 differed fundamentally from the 1914 fights. The Red Army broke the fortifications of the German defensive lines by maneuvering and destroying the areas of resistance. After the World War II, the lake area was within the Polish state. The army took over Gὅring’s headquarters in Broad Bor creating ammunition stores. The training ground in Orzysz and barracks facilities were used to locate military units in Węgorzewo and Giżycko. In the 1960s, using the natural conditions of the lakes, the 32nd Brigade of operational-tactical missiles was located in Orzysz. The close location of the Polish border with Russia in the 1990s meant that a German inventory of German fortifications and military facilities was carried out, and the Great Masurian Lakes are treated as an axis of possible tactical operations in northern Poland. The character of stationed units, which are operational in nature, has changed, and the training ground in Orzysz has become the base of allied forces.

Abstract:
In the last decade preceding the outbreak of World War II, the war threat of Poland was perceived by the highest political and military authorities. During the reign of Józef Piłsudski the question was asked: who was the war with? This question asked to the military and political decision makers confirmed three possibilities of the outbreak of the conflict: with Russia, with Germany and with Russia and Germany. The analyzes carried out took into account the use of the natural environment as an important element in the preparation of variants of strategic plans for the future war. Each of the plans took into account the complexity of the defense situation of the state (special, long line of borders, natural obstacles and lack thereof). The Polish military alliances were counted on. The Polish defensive war of 1939 turned out to be a conflict with two aggressors (the Third Reich and the USSR), and with the passivity of our Allies, the chances of victory were only hypothetical. The natural environment may help in the implementation of military action plans, but it does not replace the lack of military capabilities of the army.

Abstract:
The knowledge of geographical conditions is one of the main requirements for planning military operations at each command level. The natural environment enforces the variety of combat techniques. It is a truism, therefore, to say that every military historian reconstructing the course of wars or war campaigns should analyze the impact of natural conditions on the battle planning process and its course. The article presents the characteristics of Bulgarian area and the impact of geographical conditions on the course of military operations during the Russian-Turkish war of 1877–1878 and the Serbian-Bulgarian war of 1885. Although they were two different conflicts in terms of duration, number of forces and direction of conduct, their example shows the problems faced by fighting armies at the time. We are dealing with issues related to overcoming the swollen waters of Danube and battlefields abounding in hills and mountain passages difficult to access. Not without significance were weather issues, which influenced the course of the fight and the possibilities of supplying troops.

In the article the Author discuss the course of naval operations and battles during the Russo-Turkish War of 1787–1792 based on the news from „Gazeta Warszawska” and „Pamiętnik Historyczno-Polityczny”. Both magazines followed the course of this armed conflict with vivid interest, printing reports on both land and sea theater of war operations. They wrote about preparations for subsequent campaigns, the condition and size of enemies fleets. Warsaw periodicals published also information about the numerical strength of the armies, and above all described the most important battles and even minor skirmishes. Therefore, the reader of the Warsaw press obtained quite complete and, what is more important, reliable information about actions taking place at seas, so he could easily form an opinion of this events based on that.
