Abstract:
Examining how different media news outlets frame the same situation is an important step towards understanding how the world’s media systems behave. This study examines how four influential news media outlets, belonging to different media systems, have framed Sweden's management of the Covid-19 pandemic during two time-periods when the Covid-19 virus surged. These two media systems are state owned news outlets, consisting of RT (previously Russia Today) and Xinhua, and commercial news outlets, through BBC News and the New York Times.ThestudyusesadeductiveFramingTheorymethod, asdefinedbySemetkoa

This thesis explores to what extent Multinomial Naive Bayes (MNB) and Support Vector Machines (SVM) classifiers can be used to determine the polarity of news, specifically the news coverage of Sweden by the Russian state-funded news outlets RT and Sputnik. Three experiments are conducted.  In the first experiment, an MNB and an SVM classifier are trained with the Large Movie Review Dataset (Maas et al., 2011) with a varying number of samples to determine how training data size affects classifier performance.  In the second experiment, the classifiers are trained with 300 positive, negative, an

This thesis consists of four constituent studies exploring several common themes: female participation in employment, normative assumptions regarding the proper roles of males and females, and social change. The underlying focus is gendered division of work, which is explored through the concept of family models. These models are conceptualized with reference to the interrelationships between female employment, availability of care services outside the family, and sharing of care work within the family. The empirical analysis is mostly based on the Baltic countries, but also includes Germany,
