Abstract:
The research is dedicated to the texts of riddles in diverse languages, in particular Russian and English, as representatives of the small folklore genre. The authors note that the main task of the riddle genre is to familiarize the bearer of folk culture with the folklore system. One of the features of modeling reality in the genre under study is the image of objects from their pragmatic features, as well as external characteristics. One of the specific features of the riddle genre is a special choice of objects of reality belonging to the realities of the material world, and having external characteristics that perform important functions necessary for a person. Such requirements for the objects of reality are conditioned by the task of the genre itself, which are teaching the categorization of reality, highlighting important from the point of view of pragmatics objects and phenomena that contribute to the adaptation of the individual in society. The article analyzes riddles in Russian and English from the point of view of reflecting the linguistic picture of the world in them; reveals the meaningful and pragmatic features of riddles in multi-system languages; determines their genre-language organization. It is proved that the riddle is an element of the language game; the phenomenon of the language game in riddles in different languages is traced and enigmatic works with elements of wordplay in Russian and English are characterized).

Abstract:
Folk riddles have recently become a fairly popular object of linguistic and linguocultural research due to their complex structural and semantic organization, which allows analyzing this folklore genre in semantic, structural and functional aspects. This study explores the description features of wild and domestic animals within the framework of an enigmatic text. The object of our research is to identify the presence of linguistic and cultural connotations in the description of wild and domestic animals and to trace the degree of taboo in using animal names in folk riddles. The tasks set are due to the fact that an archaic person’s life was largely connected with agricultural activities carried out with the help of livestock, as well as the need to protect themselves from wild animals attacking livestock. During the analysis of the linguistic material, we found that Russian and English folk riddles about animals were characterized either by omission of the subject of action in the descriptive part of the riddle, or the introduction of occasional vocabulary, which is largely consistent with the laws of taboo. In the Russian folk riddle, an occasional noun of this type is often introduced for the name of an animal: stuchikha (someone knocking), gremikha (someone rattling), with a rather transparent semantics that actualizes the initial action: (stuchat' – stuchikha, gremet' – gremikha). In the corpus of English folk riddles, we have noted a conversion transition (the verb lick transforms into the noun lick), as a result of which the noun also develops the meaning of the subject of a given action. In addition, we found the absence of a linguocognitive component in the description of animals, since the description of the denotation is mainly based on the actualization of a typical feature (the ability to bark, the presence of a certain number of hooves, horns, the ability to hunt animals).

Abstract:
This article is devoted to the analysis of the structural features of Russian and English folk riddles containing parametric data in the descriptive part. The purpose of the study is to identify the features of the implementation of prototypical constructions of folk riddles containing an indication of the parametric data of the denotation. The scientific novelty of the research lies in the fact that for the first time Russian and English riddles are analyzed from the point of view of the linguistic implementation of a stable prototypical model of the enigmatic genre. For the first time, the inclusion of parametric indicators in the descriptive part of a folk riddle is considered as a way to realize the effect of an illogical consequence typical for the structure of the genre organization; in addition, the authors for the first time investigate the presence of a “linguocultural” codification of the denotation through parametric data. The results showed that the inclusion of parametric indicators in the description of the denotation is due to the need to implement a prototypical model of the enigmatic genre – the model of illogical consequence. In addition, it was found that the inclusion of parametric indicators in the English and Russian corpus of folk riddles is often implemented using zoomorphic and anthropomorphic codes. During the analysis of the illustrative material, it was found that for the Russian folk riddle, the appeal to parameters is associated with the tendency to describe a number of independent objects as a single mechanism, which directly reveals the logic of archaic human thinking, while the appeal to parametric data within the framework of the English riddle is motivated by the description of a procedural action.

Abstract:
Metaphor is a unique phenomenon both from the point of view of language and culture, for it preserves unique relic forms of the surrounding reality perception. At present, when modern conditions of people’s lives are transformed, metaphor, as a way of realization of hidden comparison, undergoes a number of qualitative changes. In this regard, it will be relevant to turn to metaphor functioning in folklore texts, because due to its conservatism we can identify archetypal images underlying the hidden comparison. This article examines the features of zoomorphic metaphor in Russian folk riddles. The zoomorphic code is interesting for us, since the images of animals, actualized through metaphor, allow identifying national values. In riddles containing images of animals, there is a certain similarity between the image of the animal and the denotat in question; accordingly, this similarity is reflected in the metaphor, usually through a description of the action and appearance of the animal. Analyzing metaphor in the Russian folk riddle, we identify zoomorphic codes, which retain archetypal coding, expressed in the context of the whole riddle and in its correspondence to mythological ideas about the given animal. In this case, we are talking about the image of a horse, a bull. At the same time, the corpus of folk riddles reveals such zoomorphic metaphorical formations, which do not show any connection with archetypal coding. Thus, the image of a bear is deprived of mythological subtext and is used only as a means of secondary nomination of the denotation.

В данной статье рассматриваются русские и английские загадки, содержащие в себе метафору и посвященные теме «Природа». Вклад загадки в народное творчество значителен, и, в частности, благодаря ей возможно воссоздать картину мира народов прошлого. В настоящей работе предпринята попытка суммировать актуальные знания по вопросу русской и английской загадки, а также провести исследование метафоричных русских и английских загадок на предмет репрезентации природы. Актуальность данной работы обусловлена интересом к символичной репрезентации природы в жанре метафоричной загадки и недостатком работ, посвященных данной узкой теме. В ходе исследования были использованы методы анализа, сравнения, обобщения и контекстуального толкования. Основными сходствами русских и английских загадок являются яркая иносказательная репрезентация объектов и явлений природы, одушевление флоры и фауны, природных стихий, а также их символизация. Основными отличиями являются различия в количестве загадок, посвященных определенной тематике, расхождения в репрезентируемой флоре и фауне, а также в используемой коннотации. This article analyzes the Russian and English riddles containing a metaphor and devoted to the theme “Nature”. The contribution of the riddle to folk art is significant and this fact makes it possible to recreate the picture of the world of the peoples of the past. This work makes an attempt to summarize the current knowledge on the issue of the Russian and English riddles as well as to study metaphorical riddles. The relevance of this work is due to the interest in the symbolic representation of nature in the genre of metaphorical riddles and the lack of works devoted to this narrow topic. The study employs the methods of analysis, comparison, generalization and contextual interpretation. The main similarities between Russian and English riddles are vivid allegorical representations of objects and natural phenomena, animation of flora and fauna, natural elements, and symbolism. The main differences lie in the number of riddles devoted to a particular topic, discrepancies in the flora and fauna represented, and the employed connotation.

Abstract:
The article offers evidence of contrastive ethnolinguoculturological analysis of images of major natural phenomena (the sun, the moon, the day, the night, the stars, the wind, the rain, the snow/ice) in the riddles of four folk cultures that belong to Turkic (Tuvan and Tatar), Slavic (Russian), and Romance (Spanish) linguocultures, with interpretation of peculiarities of the poetics. Nature binds together different levels of cognition, evokes imaginative associations, refers to the archetypal constants of mythopoetic creativity. Riddles about nature are presented in the verbal creativity of any ethnic group. Theoretically and practically, it is important to develop a unified ethnolinguoculturological approach to study the poetics of thematically identical riddles of multilingual cultures. The subject of the article is riddles about nature, the object is linguistic means that create images of the sun, the moon, the day, the night, the stars, the wind, the rain, the snow/ice in Tuvan, Tatar, Russian-speaking, and Spanish ethnic groups. In the study, around 400 Tuvan, Tatar, Russian and Spanish riddles about nature from books on Tuvan, Tatar, Russian and Spanish folklore were used, along with riddles found on the Internet. The study methods include semantic, interpretative, linguoculturological analysis, culturological commentary, and comparative analysis. The main objective of the article is to analyze models of figurative representation and poetics of nine natural phenomena in four linguocultures. The article establishes that the ethnolinguistic content and poetics of riddles about nature vary depending on objective natural and geographical factors, dominant folk worldview, and typological affiliation of languages. The most numerous and metaphorically branched in all four linguistic cultures were the riddles about the sun, the wind, and the moon . The investigated riddles about nature show the characteristic determinant of the Turkic and the sporadic determinant of the Russian and Spanish riddles. The similarity of the images suggests a Eurasian continuum of riddles about nature.

Abstract:
Goals. The article aims to describe common riddle-telling patterns of the Don Kalmyks as of the late 19th century traced in works by I. Popov, a famous collector of Kalmyk folklore samples. Materials. One of the nine handwritten books constituting his academic heritage which is only partially introduced to researchers is titled ‘Riddles of the Don Kalmyks’. It includes 367 Clear Script texts accompanied by Russian translations and the author’s foreword which provides a brief description of the genre and reconstructs standard game situations explicitly demonstrating the functioning of riddles in the folk tradition. Results. Our hypothesis is that here I. Popov was following M. Castrén’s ‘Attempted Essay on the Buryat Language’ (sixteen riddles from the latter included in Popov’s book) because the ethnologist gives similar information on the Selenga Buryats. Results. According to I. Popov’s description, riddle-telling among Kalmyk children was a team game. As for individual players, there were tolgachi, i.e. leaders of two teams participants were divided into, and tuulchi — a master of riddles highly esteemed by other players. An important component of the game is mockery of losers, which can be found in many cultures as a form of punishment. I. Popov gives an example of one game where two teams ask numerical riddles (related to figures from one to ten) to each other. Comparison with traditions of other Turko-Mongols, such as Buryats and Altaians, shows that the Kalmyk tradition of riddle-telling shares similar features, e.g. connection of riddle-telling with the winter period, punishment as a compulsory element of the game. Still, it has some specific features. Firstly, for Kalmyks and Buryats this is a collective game, while in the Altaian tradition participants can play individually. The second important distinctive feature is the difference of age categories of players: in the Kalmyk tradition those are children, in the Buryat — young married couples, and in the Altaian — adults. The Appendix provides a facsimile of the I. Popov’s foreword to his ‘Riddles of the Don Kalmyks’.

Abstract:
The main goal of this paper is a semantic and quantitative analysis of the linguistic picture of the world of Russian and Slovak metaphorical riddles about the sun and the moon. We analysed 200 riddles (138 Russian and 62 Slovak) from folk and author's anthologies. In total, our documentary material contained 374 metaphorical transmissions (of which 241 were Russian and 133 were Slovak). Based on the analysis of the texts of the riddles, we found that the mentioned celestial bodies are interpreted in a similar way by Slovak and Russian speakers. Their metaphorical coding in both languages is most often realized on the basis of personification, through which they are perceived as people or human activities or states are attributed to them. Since the Slovak and Russian languages belong to the same group of Slavic languages, the motifs of the moon and the sun appear in their riddles, which are completely identical. In addition to personification, metaphorical coding is often realised in them using the names of animals and their parts, objects from everyday life and food. In most cases, these metaphorical transfers are based on similarity of form and colour.

В системе фольклорных жанров особое место отводится жанровым формам, сохраняющим свою актуальность в современной культуре. Данная статья посвящена изучению современного бытования одного из малых нелирических фольклорных жанров - загадки. В работе раскрывается своеобразие загадок, зафиксированных в различных районах Краснодарского края в 70-90-е гг. ХХ века. Авторы исследования исходят из постулата, что в основе формирования языка фольклора лежит картина мира, которая отражает определенные ментальные установки. В фольклорном дискурсе особенно отчетливо проявляются миромоделирующие потенции языка. Тезаурус кубанских загадок связан со структурой мифопоэтической картины мира, отраженной в фольклоре Кубани. В данной статье миромоделирующая функция описана на материале народных паремий: малый нелирический жанр загадки рассмотрен в сопоставительном аспекте - сравнительно-типологический метод послужил исследовательским инструментарием данной работы. Этот метод позволил выявить сходства и различия загадок русского и украинского народов в специфической языковой контаминации говоров Кубани, определить их художественно-поэтическое своеобразие. Слияние двух языковых культур, русской и украинской, особым образом выразившееся в создании кубанского диалекта, обусловило специфику региональных вариантов общерусских загадок. In the system of folklore genres, a special place is given to the genre forms that retain their relevance in modern culture. This paper dwells upon the study of the current form of existence of folklore genres - a riddle. The work reveals the peculiarity of riddles recorded in various regions of Krasnodar Krai in the 70-90s of the 20th century. The authors claim that the formation of the folklore language is based on the picture of the world which reflects certain mental attitudes. In the folklore discourse the world-modeling potentials of a language are particularly clearly manifested. The thesaurus of Kuban riddles is connected with the structure of the mythopoetic picture of the world reflected in the folklore of Kuban.This paper describes the world-modeling function on the basis of the folk paremia: a small non-lyric genre of riddles is considered in a comparative aspect - the comparative-typological method served as the research tool for this work.This method made it possible to identify similarities and differences in the riddles of the Russian and Ukrainian peoples in the specific language contamination of the dialects of Kuban, to determine their artistic and poetic specifics. The merger of the two language cultures - Russian and Ukrainian - which was particularly expressed in the creation of the Kuban dialect and which determined the specificity of the regional variants of common Russian riddles.

Abstract:
Introduction. The riddle which reflects the world outlook of the people is a popular genre in the Karachay-Balkar folklore. However, the richest materials collected over decades have not been studied so far. The present study aims at examining the history and poetics of the Karachay-Balkar riddle drawing on the works of leading foreign and Russian theorists. This has involved i) the discussion of the socio-cultural factors that were conducive to the emergence of the genre, ii) the description of the five principal thematic circles, iii) the analysis of the key structural formulas of the Karachay-Balkar riddle, and iv) the description of the expressive language of the puzzle. Data and research methods. Academic collections, including pre-revolutionary sources, were used as the database for the research, which involved comparative-historical, system-structural, semiotic, textological, and analytical methods. Results. The Karachay-Balkar puzzle may be seen as a bilateral artistic subculture, with one side facing the archetypal invariant, and the other characterized by variability, granted the historical and geographical contexts, the landscape of the North Caucasus, the life, and the culture of the highlanders. The conceptualization of the world in riddles involves five main ontological conceptual spheres: anthropocentric, ethnocultural, natural, cosmogonic, mental, and ethical. The riddle images are most often associated with ethnically marked objects. The distinct character of the Karachay-Balkar riddle is due to frequent use of rhymed poetic forms, verse formulas, proper names, as well as to a wealth of their expressive devices (metaphor, comparison, alliteration, antithesis, sarcasm, and humor). Also, the riddles have a great pedagogical potentiality. Conclusions. The analysis of the Karachay-Balkar riddles resulted in identifying the distinct features in the conceptualizations of the world by the North Caucasian highlanders, as well as in drawing a picture of their values in the material and spiritual spheres.

Abstract:
This study deals with the linguistic picture of the world presented in Russian and Slovak folk and literary anthropomorphic riddles. During semantic and quantitative analysis, it was found out that anthropomorphic encoding is realised through names of family members, ordinary people, traditional professions, mythological, fairy tale, and historical characters and nationalities. Quantitative differences allow to determine with whom language users came in touch more or less often.

The Republic of Moldova is ridden by political uncertainties, divided by acute language and media policy issues, and plagued by a continuous national identity crisis. This chapter discusses the country’s exposure to Russian public diplomacy initiatives, in particular those implemented with the help of social media, which have been growing in popularity and sophistication. The chapter looks into this new phenomenon from a language policy point of view. By comparing the approaches of two competing actors, the EU and Russia, in making use of social media as foreign policy tools, it raises important questions about the benefits and effectiveness of digital diplomacy.

Abstract:
M. Bulgakov's novel The Master and Margarita is a unique phenomenon for both Russian and world literature. From the very beginning the novel positioned itself as a work of deception. Deception is a way of creative thinking, so its study in the structure of the work not only helps highlight the techniques of its expression, but also understand the novel and its aesthetic message. The article seeks to identify the semiotic and the ludic nature of deception as a literary device. The semiotic model of ludic activity brings to determining the ratio of semantic and pragmatic meanings in the poetics of a literary work that underlie its fact/fuction correlation. The pragmatic meaning of a literary work is a complex hierarchical structure, since any statement can repeatedly carry a pragmatic message. In its pragmatic function, deception in literature may generally be viewed as an expression of the genre affiliation of a novel and its structural cohesion, as well as an expression of the riddles (an often delayed one), in the act of reading which divides the text sequentially. At the same time, the act of reading performs narrative and pragmatic functions: the metalinguistic, the phatic, the dramatic, the comic, the symbolic, and the suggestive ones. The mystical serves to bridge the two different semiotic systems - the Moscow present and the New Testament past that form two different texts in the novel. Besides, the mystical manifests in the hybrid nature of the narrative and thus breaches its conventional forms.

Abstract How did Russia’s new ruling institutions formulate “solutions” to the multiple crises of scarcity and loss? After discussing the “weighty actor” thesis, which emphasizes the power of the state, this chapter details the multivalent quest by workers for socioeconomic security and dignity and by peasants for control over arable land and the supply of grain. Although social conflict riddled the three months of the first coalition regime, democratic liberals and democratic socialists worked strenuously to mediate conflict in the ministries, factories, and villages and along Russia’s vast railroad system. A spring strike wave is reviewed in these terms, along with growing peasant activism stimulated in part by radical socialists and Bolsheviks. Despite the efforts of those widely regarded as the revolution’s “best and brightest,” the chapter argues that in these terms alone, Russia was soon again, as one prominent spokesperson described, “on the brink of catastrophe.”

The article presents a study of the seven most common images of nature phenomena in folklore (the sun, the moon, the stars, the day, the night, the wind, the rain) in Colombian riddles. The riddle is one of the oldest genres of oral folk art, a means of preserving cultural memory, educating ingenuity and creative thinking. The article reflects the stages of the development of Colombian riddles from the appearance of the enigmatic genre in Europe, the popularization of the riddle in Spanish, its export to the New World to the acquisition of national-specific Colombian features that accumulated the features of European, Indigenous and African cultures. The material of the article was about 300 Colombian riddles, most of which were taken from collections of traditional riddles of the departments of Colombia; riddles posted in Colombian Internet sources. The article also presents the results of a linguistic experiment conducted among Russian and Colombian youth to solve Colombian riddles in Spanish. The main research methods are semantic, interpretative, linguoculturological analysis, cultural commentary. The main objective of the article is to analyze the ethnolinguistic features of the figurative representation of nature in the Colombian linguoculture, as well as to find out how modern youth understands the metaphorical description of natural phenomena in riddles. The article finds that the Colombian riddles combine traditional Spanish cryptic texts and the realities of everyday life, cultural and religious associations peculiar to Colombia. Refs 8.

Abstract:
At the referendum held in Denmark on June 1st, 2022 (Indenrigsministeriet, 2022), two-thirds of the electorate (66.9 %) voted for the removal of the Danish EU opt-out on Common Security and Defense Policy. This result was noteworthy, and it must be understood within the context of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, and in the light of the situation of instability and insecurity sparked by an international crisis, that added up to the effects of the global health crisis. The populist right-wing parties in parliament were against the removal, arguing Denmark would renounce decisional power on key military and security areas. Instead, these parties advocate for the strengthening of the military within the NATO-alliance, starkly opposing further development at EU level. The impact of the Russia-Ukrainian war opens new opportunities for the populist right, whose electoral support has been waning over the past years. The newly established party, The Denmark Democrats can gain from the situation to strengthen and consolidate their position. The New Right and the crisis ridden Danish People’s Party can exploit the situation to gain voters’ support, playing on feelings of insecurity and international crisis.
