This chapter offers an overview of the experiences of the four major cultural groups within the borders of modern Alaska: Eskimos (Yup’ik, Inupiat), Aleuts, Athabaskans, and the Haida and Tlingit Indians. Abstract George Hamilton, a Haida Indian from Craig, Alaska, died in 1984 at the age of 101. The Haida, together with the Tlingit Indians, historically were present throughout the many islands and mainland of southeastern Alaska. They are perhaps best known for their elaborately carved cedar totem poles, free standing wood sculptures used for ceremonial purposes throughout their homeland. Both the Haida and the Tlingit made their livings primarily from the sea, and early Russian explorers were often met by large numbers of their dugout war canoes.
