Abstract:
Ruth Frank, the narrator of Freed's critically acclaimed Home Ground, has grown up in this appealing novel. She married and settled in America, she returns to South Africa after her father suffers a heart attack. She is unhappy with her husband Clive (he's also South African and Jewish, now a biomedical researcher with no desire ever to return home). Ruth has found her parents older, seedier, more marginal than ever—but prone to the same passionate hatreds and desires that their theatrical life has encouraged over the years. Diasporas are often imagined as impermeable communities. Yet the boundaries of the Serbian diaspora in the United States were surprisingly porous to certain outsiders, such as Ruth Mitchell, who routinely dressed as a Chetnik to address Serbian immigrants. Four case studies besides Ruth Mitchell are discussed: Eleanor Calhoun, Johann Blose, Charles DeHarrack, and Frank Melford. Diplomats acted as gatekeepers to these Serbophiles, limiting ac

The article examines a large work composed by César Franck in 1881 and practically unexplored in Russian musicology — Rébecca (1881, world premiere in 1883), subtitled by the composer as “a biblical scene for soloists, chorus and orchestra”. The publication conveys a particular polemical pathos, because references to Rébecca in musicological literature in Russia and in other countries, until recently, had always been accompanied by factual inaccuracies. According to Vincent d’Indy’s periodization, the large-scale compositions of his teacher pertaining to the genre of cantata and oratorio (Ruth

This paper discusses the reasons for Rush Rhees’ sudden cancellation of his study of the phenomenon of continuity. Before he became a follower of Ludwig Wittgenstein, Rhees studied the philosophy of Franz Brentano. In his unfinished PhD, Rhees developed Brentano’s phenomenological interpretation of continuity, more specifically, his theory of “plerosis”. Nevertheless, after Rhees aborted his work on continuum, he never returned to it or to Brentano’s philosophy. One of the last events leading up to this ending was the conversation between Rhees and Wittgenstein, which took place in 1938. The a

AbstractCardiac abnormalities are frequently reported in acute subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) patients. However, frank ST-elevation and myocardial dysfunction mimicking acute coronary syndrome is a rare occurrence. Systemic and local catecholamine release mediate myocardial injury and may explain raised troponin levels, concordant regional wall motion abnormalities and systolic dysfunction. These findings can pose a significant problem in the acute setting where “time-is-muscle” paradigm can rush clinicians towards a “rule-in” diagnosis of acute myocardial infarction. We present the case of a 60

The proliferation of sexualised imagery of children and adolescents – especially girls – within media and advertising has elicited considerable public debate and academic discussion within Australia and overseas. Within these debates, girls are commonly configured as being ‘at risk’, that is, in danger of being sexualised, objectified and exploited. They are said to be in danger of growing up believing that popularity and success are tied to sexual appeal (Durham 2008; Reist 2008; Rush and La Nauze 2006).
