Full textThe aim of this study was to make a review of the current literature regarding women with disabilities and risk factors of abuse. Our themes were disability, abuse and risk factors. We have analyzed the results by using the routine activity theory. We have identified various factors that may be associated with increased risk of abuse. Being a woman, to be dependent on others and isolation are examples of risk factors. There is a contradiction in the research considering if the disability itself is a risk factor or if the risk factors are in the context that the woman lives within. The abuse manisfest itself in similar ways as for women without disabilities. The perpetrators are usually men as well as the woman's partner, but can also be someone else close to her, such as a health care provider.

Full textIn the past few years, dealing cannabis has led to conflicts, and had a significant role in the increased numbers of fatal shootings in Sweden. Hence, measures to solve the issue are undoubtedly needed to prevent these consequences. Additionally, part of the global sustainability goals in the UN's Agenda 2030 is about promoting social sustainability by, among other things, increasing the safety and security of the urban environment. The aim of this study is to examine the places in the urban environment that attract the dealing of cannabis to map when, where, and in what situation the crime occurs. Consequently, the possibility of identifying different changes to the environmental design enables the prevention of crime and promotion of safety. To achieve the purpose of the study, a sample of 25 crime scenes in Stockholm County were examined during the evening and night, based on data from the Swedish police authority. Once in place, a template, called “Trygga Platser Mallen” (Safe Places Template), was filled in on an ongoing basis, while the physical environment was photographed at the same time. The results were then compiled and analyzed based on various safety and security principles, as well as theories. The study is delimited and therefore only contains 25 crime scenes in the Stockholm region. Also, the cannabis exchange at those places occurred during the evening between 6 pm and 1 am. The results of the study show that there are many environmental factors that interact in a setting where dealing cannabis takes place. In essence, cannabis crime is strongly linked to the social interaction between people. However, the physical aspect facilitates the execution of the crime. The results show that the conditions of the environment in the evenings enable cannabis dealing because dealers are less likely to be seen, making it easier to sell. Additionally, most businesses close during the evening, which greatly reduces the flow of people, and the natural surveillance deteriorates. At a micro level, the results show that the physical properties that facilitate cannabis dealing are streets, walking paths, and greenery. The reason is most likely due to the streets increasing the accessibility and flow to these places. Moreover, walking paths provide an opportunity for cross paths between potential customers and dealers. Furthermore, the greenery obstructs formal and informal surveillance. However, there are approaches to prevent the dealing of cannabis, such as combining methods for crime prevention through urban design and focusing on the improvement of social cohesion in different areas. An example would be to create spaces that encourage social interactions and activities at all hours of the day. Essentially, it is necessary to gain a deeper knowledge of the places that attract the dealing in cannabis to create safer spaces that discourages crime. Lastly, this project ends with a critical discussion of the methods and mentions recommendations for future studies.

Full textAbstract Date: 2011-01-14 Level: Bachelor thesis in business administration, 15 credits Authors: Damir Foric, Robert Medvegy, Sebastian Silva Tutor: Lennart Bogg Title: Personnel ledger - An effective control tool against illegal work in the catering industry? Keywords: Economic crime, personnel ledger, illegal work, routine activity theory. Problem: What is the economic crime enforcement officials’ opinion about the personnel ledger’s effect against illegal labor force in the catering industry? What are the two anonymous restaurant owners’ opinions about the personnel ledger’s effect on illegal labor in the catering industry? Which factors effect economic crimes? Purpose: The purpose of this study is to compare the economic crime enforcement authorities, a company auditor, and two anonymous restaurant owners’ opinion of the personnel ledger’s effect on illegal workforce and then strength these opinions with theoretical factors affecting economic crime. Method: The aim of the study and the problem is answered by a qualitative approach. In the study restaurants and concerned authorities that have a connection to the personnel ledger and financial crime are interviewed. Since the topic is relatively unexplored, an exploratory investigation is suitable. The framework and empiric information are analyzed and then lead to a conclusion that will answer the problem statement. Results: The study shows that all respondents agree that the personnel ledger had some positive effect on illegal workforce in the catering industry. The authorities have introduced the personnel ledger which partly would stop or impede illegal workers. The restaurant owners have already found ways to bypass it. Several aspects of the routine activity theory are confirmed in the study. Lack of effective controls, standards and values, opportunity structure and the economic, political and technological developments are reasons that economic crimes are committed.

Full textThis study examines the feeling of anxiety about becoming a victim of threat of physical violence or assault in the workplace. The study focuses on people working as security guards. The purpose of the study was to examine if there is a connection between the feeling of anxiety and the elements of the routine activity theory. The samples of participants were collected by social media, where web-based surveys were published. The final sample consisted of 378 participants. The analysis consisted of a binary logistic regression and bivariate analysis. The results of the study showed that exposure and the absence of capable guards are strong predictors of the feeling of anxiety. By the results of the analysis there was no strong evidence that the feeling of anxiety and attractiveness have a connection. The study showed that earlier victimization in the workplace can be a possible predictor of anxiety. In conclusion there is a widespread feeling of anxiety amongst security guards, however the routin activity theory can not explain the whole spectra of this problem.

Full textBetween 2014 and 2015, school burglaries have increased in the municipality ofLund. The local police are searching for more information and recommendationsto achieve a solution to this problem. The focus for this study is a crime-mappinganalysis to help the local police force in their crime prevention strategies. Thisanalysis will distinguish patterns, similarities and differences in the burglaries, using as its theoretical basis the routine activity approach complemented with thetheory of rational choice. The study will also propose effective interventions; inconnection with these, previous research and literature is presented.By analyzing police reports a statistical analysis is done. The result shows thatschools are particularly vulnerable for burglary at certain times, days and months. Some geographical areas are more vulnerable than others; nevertheless someschools are repeated victimized. In the discussion of the results three types ofburglaries are presented: burglaries committed by youths that are aware of thearea and are primarily not motivated by steeling; professional burglaries wherelarge amounts of electronic goods is taken; and burglaries that are not as extensivethan the professional burglaries and the burglars obtain a smaller amount ofgoods. Some types of burglary are more frequent than others and differentstrategies are needed to analyze these. In the cases where youths are committingthe burglaries, deterrent effects can be more effective than if the sameinterventions were to target professional burglars. Partnership between the schoolsand the local police is important and it is central that the school is educated onwhich interventions are necessary. The intervention must be modified to the localcontext and be evaluated. Some schools are especially vulnerable and repeatedlyvictimized. More detailed analysis is needed for these schools. The study showsthe importance of focusing on repeatedly victimized properties and ofimplementing interventions immediately.

Full textThe aim of this study was to gain a deeper understanding of howindividuals experience that stalking victimization has influencedbehavioral changes in their everyday activities. A semistructuredinterview guide was used during in-depth interviews with tenindividuals who had been victims of stalking. The result showedseveral different behavioral changes in everyday activities influencedby the stalking victimization. The participants changed their behaviorduring communication with other people, which was presented aswariness, rejection and contact-seeking. The behavioral changes alsooccurred in different places by being observant, arming themselvesand avoiding specific places. Restrictive measures was anotherbehavioral change which mainly emerged when the participants usedtheir phones and social media. The behavioral changes varied betweenthe individuals but the main goal was to protect themselves andachieve a sense of safety. The Routine Activity Theory was used toexplain these behavioral changes were the item absence of CapableGuardians was primarily used. By increasing capable guardians, alternatively avoiding situations where they were absent, thebehavioral changes could reduce the risk of being a victim of stalkingor other crimes.

Full textThe purpose of this study is to conduct an in-depth area analysis of Södervärn's focal point, with the intention of mapping the local problem image of the area. The purpose of the study is also to create a better understanding of why the focal point is perceived as a place with problems related to disorder, crime and insecurity. In the long run, this understanding is expected to lead to better targeted measures, and hopefully fewer problems and reduced insecurity. This study has been conducted with a combined method of structured and semistructured interviews. Semi-structured interviews were conducted to complement the structured interviews and provide a deeper understanding of the local problem picture. The sample consisted of 104 respondents, of which 100 in the structured and four in the semistructured interviews. The result shows that the disorder that the travelers in our study mainly perceive as a major problem at Södervärn's focal point is careless traffic followed by litters, drunken people who disturb the scheme, damage and dumbbells. The factors that influence the perception of Södervärn's focal point are rumors about the area, the ongoing drug trafficking, whether in the day or night, the "shady people" moving in the area, as well as aesthetically what the area looks like. The main measure that respondents primarily believe can increase their safety experience when moving at the focal point is the visibility of the police.

Full textThis thesis aims to explain how news media reports can affect neighborhood crime. This is done with the premise that fear of crime affects routine activities, which in turn has an effect on neighborhood crime. There has been some disagreement whether news media affects fear of crime or not. Because of that a systematic review was done to clarify what the current research in field says. The results from this review shows that above all local there is a relationship between TV-news and fear of crime. This relationship was strongest for people living in communities with higher crime rates. An account for possible reactions to fear of crime was done, where avoidance behavior seems to be the most common reaction, especially in neighborhoods with lower social and economic resources.

Full textProstitution is a complex, worldwide societal problem that can lead to several negative consequences for the victim. In Sweden, the purchase of sexual services has been criminalized since 1999, and the Swedish government allocates great importance to combat prostitution. Despite this, prostitution is a widespread problem in Sweden. Various studies indicate that the phenomenon is increasing, primarily via the internet, and that prostitution seems to be declining with age. Previous research in the field shows that difficulties in counteracting the problem are partly due to the development of technology, attitudes and norms in society and a lack of resources in the judicial system. The purpose of the present study is to investigate difficulties in preventing prostitution from the perspective of professionals, as well as what can be done to improve the preventive work. Through a qualitative method with semi-structured interviews and an application of the routine activity theory, the research questions are answered. The results show that the lack of personal with relevant skills, the increased accessibility via the internet and the impact of porn on attitudes and norms make it more difficult to counteract prostitution. In addition, it is shown that further measures are required, including early efforts regarding education and a adjustment of the Sex Purchase Act.

Full textThe aim of this study was to examine if the introduction of neighborhood watch affects the number of burglary. The questions asked were; which types of methods of neighborhood watch were used, and what kind of differences there were between selected areas in Södermalm, Stockholm. We created a matched sample of areas and contacted mediators of neighborhood watch in these areas. We conducted a quantitative study using structured interviews and presented data per burglary rates in the areas five years before and one to five years after neighborhood watch was implemented. The results were analyzed by comparative analysis and concluded that common methods of neighborhood watch were e.g. signage, security doors, good contacts between neighbors and attention to suspects in the area. The differences between the methods used means that general conclusions about differences and similarities cannot be concluded. The impact of neighborhood watch differed, and the results were ambiguous.

Full textThe study aims to investigate how four respondents describe that money is laundered in Sweden. Furthermore, the study aims to investigate what opportunities and difficulties the respondents experience in their work against money laundering. A qualitative method with semi-structured interviews has been used where four respondents have been interviewed. During the interviews, the respondents were active at the Swedish Environmental Crime Agency, the Swedish Tax Agency and in the banking sector. The interviews were analyzed with the analysis method thematization. The empirical study is interpreted with the routine activity theory, which assumes that three elements are needed for a crime to be possible to commit. The empirical study suggests that money laundering in Sweden has been affected by internet use and society's technological development. The use of the internet and other technology in the money laundering process has contributed to the ability to track digital transactions, which is important in the work against money laundering. The Internet and the use of technology have also contributed to making it easier to transfer money, not least to other countries, which can make it difficult for respondents to work against money laundering. Based on the theoretical interpretation of the empirical data, money is laundered when the opportunity arises. The theoretical interpretation also suggests that money can be laundered with the help of the internet as there are no capable guards who prevent the crime from being committed.

We also examined dog owners that are involved in the NOS-project and their attitude towards crime prevention. The study is based on the theory of neighborhood watch and features the theory of social control and the theory of routine activity. Through six semi structured interviews we learned how the NOS-project may prevent crime through dog owners’ observations of unusual activity in their district. The results also show how all our participants had a positive attitude towards the NOSproject which we regard likely contributes to the projects ability to prevent crime.

Full textAs an a assignment from Christina Innala at the police in Örebro, this paper aims to investigate whether it is possible to discern behavioral patterns of Swedish arsonists as a point of departure for further spatial analysis. In this paper geographic profiling based on Swedish conditions will be studied. The material that is the basis for the essay consists of judicial decisions regarding arson and these will be analyzed and categorized. The judicial decisions that in the material has included serial arsonists has been analyzed based on geographic profiling using the software GeoProfile. We want to examine wheatear crime scenes are related to anchor-points for Swedish serial arsonists. In summary, based on our material we were able to identify six categories of arsonists. These categories match those of previous research. Based on our geographic profiling it can be concluded that the serial arsonists tend to set their fires in connection with one or more anchor-points. The Swedish arsonist is not an irrational individual that randomly and unpredictably set fires. Fires tend to occur within a criminals routine activity area, in other words the offender usually commits the offense in areas that is known for him/her.

Full textThere is many jobs today in Sweden for crime prevention and these happen often through social efforts, but there is way too few of these for the physical environment that actually affects us more than we think they do. The purpose with this study is to make a systematical analysis of the physical environment in three deprives areas and examine if these environments can create crime opportunities. The chosen places are Bergsjön, Rinkeby and Vivalla with current problematic and high crime concentration (Polisen, 2017). Fact and theories such as the Routine Activity Theory, CPTED and Jane Jacobs’s urban ideas is treated in the study’s background. Similarities between the areas physical environment is compiled through map comparisons, place analysis and interviews. The methods result showed that the traffic separation created many dark tunnels into the areas, which caused unattractive and insecure entries. The buildings in the areas were also not varied and there could be a several of similar houses next to each other or over the whole field. It can be easier for a criminal to commit crimes in a simple surrounding without details, because it is fewer things to keep track of and it becomes much easier to commit the crime when people doesn’t look around themselves. Another similarity was the street structures, for example the three areas had blind alleys that didn't interweave the streets with each other. This contributed to segregated areas and difficulties for the police to arrive and perform their efforts effectively. Even the buildings placement to the street affected whether they had a natural surveillance that could prevent crime. This concluded that the physical environment in these three deprived areas can affect the emergence of crime.
