Abstract:

Haplotype analysis of the SSRs surrounding rym 11 locus in a set of winter barleyBreeding for Barley Mosaic Virus resistance is of great importance because of yield losses and the impossibility of plant protection using chemicals. Successful breeding of long-term resistant varieties requires widening of the genetic base of resistance, preferably by pyramiding of resistance genes. One of the perspective resistance genes is rym 11, resistant to all strains of Barley Mosaic Virus complex, but which is known to be present only in the cultivar Russia 57. In this work, the identification of potential new rym 11 resistance donors on the basis of haplotype analysis of the SSRs surrounding rym 11 locus is presented.

Abstract:
Abstract The 3M™ Petrifilm™ Rapid Yeast and Mold (RYM) Count Plate is a simple, ready-to-use chromogenic culture method for the rapid detection and enumeration of yeast and mold in food products. The 3M Petrifilm RYM Count Plate method was compared to the U. S. Food and Drug Administration Bacteriological Analytical Manual (FDA BAM) Chapter 18, Yeasts, Molds and Mycotoxins and the ISO 21527:2008 Microbiology of Food and Animal Feeding Stuffs—Horizontal Method for the Enumeration for Yeast and Molds – Part 1: Colony Count Technique in Products with Water Activity Greater Than 0.95 and Part 2: Colony Count Technique in Products with Water Activity Less Than or Equal to 0.95 reference methods for raw almonds and raw frozen ground beef patties (77% lean). The 3M Petrifilm RYM Count Plate method was evaluated using a paired study design in a multi-laboratory collaborative study following the current AOAC Validation Guidelines. Three target contamination levels (low, 10–100 CFU/g; medium, 100–1000 CFU/g; high 1000–10 000 CFU/g) as well as an uninoculated control level (0 CFU/g) were evaluated for each matrix. Samples evaluated by the 3M Petrifilm RYM Count Plate method were prepared in duplicate and incubated at both 25°C and 28°C. Plates at both temperatures were enumerated after 48 and 60 h of incubation. No significant difference was observed between the 3M Petrifilm RYM Count Plate method and the FDA BAM or ISO 21527 reference methods for each contamination level. No statistical differences were observed between samples analyzed by the 3M Petrifilm RYM Count Plate method (at either 25°C or 28°C) and the reference methods. No statistical significant differences were observed between enumeration of colonies at 48 and 60 h on the 3M Petrifilm RYM Count Plate method and the reference methods.

Abstract:
ABSTRACTFifty-six foods and food ingredients were analyzed for populations of naturally occurring yeasts and molds using Petrifilm rapid yeast and mold (RYM) count plates, Petrifilm yeast and mold (YM) count plates, dichloran rose bengal chloramphenicol (DRBC) agar plates, acidified potato dextrose agar (APDA) plates, and dichloran 18% glycerol (DG18) agar plates. Colonies were counted after incubating plates for 48, 72, and 120 h at 25°C. Of 56 foods in which either yeasts or molds were detected on at least one medium incubated for 120 h, neither yeasts nor molds were detected in 55.4, 73.2, 21.4, 19.6, and 71.4% of foods plated on the five respective media and incubated for 48 h; 10.7, 14.3, 3.6, 1.8, and 19.6% of foods were negative after 72 h, and 3.6, 1.8, 0, 0, and 0% of foods were negative after 120 h. Considering all enumeration media, correlation coefficients were 0.03 to 0.97 at 48 h of incubation; these values increased to 0.75 to 0.99 at 120 h. Coefficients of variation for total yeasts and molds were as high as 30.0, 30.8, and 27.2% at 48, 72, and 120 h, respectively. The general order of performance was DRBC = APDA > RYM Petrifilm > YM Petrifilm ≥ DG18 when plates were incubated for 48 h, DRBC > APDA > RYM Petrifilm > YM Petrifilm ≥ DG18 when plates were incubated for 72 h, and DRBC > APDA > RYM Petrifilm =YM Petrifilm > DG18 when plates were incubated for 120 h. Differences in performance among media are attributed to the diversity of yeasts and molds likely to be present in test foods and differences in nutrient, pH, and water activity requirements for resuscitation of stressed cells and colony development.

‘hy maak die kafhok groen’ - notes on T.T. Cloete as an ecologist in rhymeIn his six volumes of poetry published up to now, T.T. Cloete reveals himself as an ecologist in rhyme. His investigation into the existence of man as part of a cosmological eco-system is founded in the belief that God created and still watches over a structured and interdependent universe. The poet employs the paradox and the technique of enumeration, and integrates ordinary and highly scientific language in poems which are deceptively simple as far as formal structure is concerned.

Abstract:
Readers of Chaucer become accustomed to his self-deprecating humor. In one famous example, the character of Chaucer the Canterbury pilgrim begins telling the tale of a knight named Sir Thopas who tries to rescue the elf queen. He uses such complicated verse forms that the host tells him to stop the “rym doggerel” and to “telle in prose somewhat.” Chaucer the poet thus shows his virtuosity and his humanity. The host is not an uncultured boor, as some early critics said; however, the pilgrim does not speak as Chaucer himself would have done on such an occasion.

Abstract:
Efficient recommendation algorithms are fundamental to solve the problem of information overload in modern society. In physical dynamics, mass diffusion is a powerful tool to alleviate the long-standing problems of recommendation systems. However, popularity bias and redundant similarity have not been adequately studied in the literature, which are essentially caused by excessive diffusion and will lead to similarity estimation deviation and recommendation performance degradation. In this paper, we penalize the popular objects by appropriately dividing the popularity of objects and then leverage the second-order similarity to suppress excessive diffusion. Evaluation on three real benchmark datasets (MovieLens, Amazon, and RYM) by 10-fold cross-validation demonstrates that our method outperforms the mainstream baselines in accuracy, diversity, and novelty.

Abstract:
Collaborative filtering algorithms (CF) and mass diffusion (MD) algorithms have been successfully applied to recommender systems for years and can solve the problem of information overload. However, both algorithms suffer from data sparsity, and both tend to recommend popular products, which have poor diversity and are not suitable for real life. In this paper, we propose a user internal similarity-based recommendation algorithm (UISRC). UISRC first calculates the item-item similarity matrix and calculates the average similarity between items purchased by each user as the user’s internal similarity. The internal similarity of users is combined to modify the recommendation score to make score predictions and suggestions. Simulation experiments on RYM and Last.FM datasets, the results show that UISRC can obtain better recommendation accuracy and a variety of recommendations than traditional CF and MD algorithms.

Ring-rearrangement metathesis (RRM) involves multiple metathesis processes such as ring-opening metathesis (ROM)/ring-closing metathesis (RCM) in a one-pot operation to generate complex targets. RRM delivers complex frameworks that are difficult to assemble by conventional methods. The noteworthy point about this type of protocol is multi-bond formation and it is an atom economic process. Abstract:
Metathesis reactions is firmly established as a valuable synthetic tool in organic chemistry, clearly comparable with the venerable Diels-Alder and Wittig reactions and, more recently, with the metal-catalyzed cross-coupling reactions. Metathesis reactions can be considered as a fascinating synthetic methodology, allowing different variants regarding substrate (alkene and alkyne metathesis) and type of metathetical reactions. On the other hand, tandem metathesis reactions such Ring Rearrangement Metathesis (RRM) and the coupling of metathesis reaction with other reactions of alkenes such as Diels-Alder or Heck reactions, makes metathesis one of the most powerful and reliable synthetic procedure. In particular, Ring-Rearrangement Metathesis (RRM) refers to the combination of several metathesis transformations into a domino process such as ring-opening metathesis (ROM)/ring-closing metathesis (RCM) and ROM-cross metathesis (CM) in a one-pot operation. RRM delivers complex frameworks that are difficult to assemble by conventional methods constitutingan atom economic process. RRM is applicable to mono- and polycyclic systems of varying ring sizes such as cyclopropene, cyclobutene, cyclopentene, cyclohexene, pyran systems, bicyclo[2.2.1]heptene derivatives, bicyclo[2.2.2]octene derivatives, bicyclo[3.2.1]octene derivatives and bicyclo[3.2.1]octene derivatives. In this review our attention has focused on the RRM reactions in 7-oxabicyclo[2.2.1]heptene derivatives and on their application in the synthesis of natural products or significant subunits of them.

Abstract:
Recycled Excavation Materials (REM) are becoming viable alternative construction resources due to their economic benefits. However, REM may be composed of weak rocks, e.g., phyllites, limiting the use in a base layer. The present paper attempts to further the knowledge of the mechanical performance of REM by performing Repeated Load Triaxial Tests (RLTT). REM are mixed with Recycled Phyllite Materials (RPM) in systematic blends of 0%, 25%, 50%, and 100%. The batches’ resilient modulus (MR) and permanent deformation (PD) characteristics were assessed to establish the maximum RPM allowed into REM while maintaining the required performance. Hicks and Monismith’s and Uzan’s models were used to characterize the stiffness behavior. A wide variation in the stiffness between the two materials was observed. Batches comprised of 0% RPM–100% REM and 25% RPM–75% REM showed high stiffness performance. The Coulomb model assessed the PD behavior, and the results showed a similar response for all batches. Unlike the stiffness, blended mixtures did not show sensitivity to increased RPM content in the PD. This study may help end-users to understand the performance of REM given the documented threshold on the allowable quantity of RPM in REM.

Abstract:
This study was designed to clarify whether mitochondrial function/dysfunction and reactive oxygen species (ROS) production have a temporal relationship with organ failure during endotoxic shock. Adult male Sprague-Dawley rats were divided into three groups receiving 1) isotonic saline (control group, n = 16); 2) 8 mg/kg lipopolysaccharide (LPS; n = 8); or 3) 20 mg/kg LPS ( n = 8) intraperitoneally under short anesthesia with 3.5% of isoflurane. After 16 h, animals were killed to analyze plasma, rat liver mitochondria (RLM), and rat heart mitochondria (RHM). In accordance with plasma analysis, LPS-treated rats were divided into “responders” and “nonresponders” with high and low levels of alanine aminotransferase and creatine, respectively. RHM from responders had significantly lower respiratory activity in state 3, suggesting a decreased rate of ATP synthesis. In contrast, RLM from responders had significantly higher respiratory activity in state 3 than both nonresponders and the control group. This increase was accompanied by a decrease in phosphate-to-oxygen ratio values, which was not observed in RHM. ROS generation determined with a spin probe, 1-hydroxy-3-carboxypyrrolidine, neither revealed a difference in RHM between LPS and control groups nor between responders and nonresponders. In contrast, RLM isolated from responders showed a marked increase in ROS production compared with both the control group and nonresponders. Our data demonstrate that 1) RHM and RLM respond to endotoxic shock in a different manner, decreasing and increasing respiratory activity, respectively, and 2) there is a temporal relationship between ROS production in RLM (but not in RHM) and tissue damage in rats subjected to LPS shock.

Abstract:
With the continuous expansion of the network scale and increasing of passengers, metro emergencies such as operational equipment failure are happening more frequently. Due to the narrow space and crowds of people, metro emergencies always have more of an impact than road traffic emergencies. In order to adopt appropriate measures to ensure passenger safety and avoid risks, we need to get a better understanding of passengers’ travel choice behaviors under emergencies. Most of the existing research studies related to travel choice behaviors took the random utility maximization (RUM) principle for granted, but failed to realize the potential of different decision-making processes and changes to the decision-making environment. In this research, we aim to analyze metro passengers’ travel choice behaviors under metro network emergency contexts. Based on the data collected from a survey about travel choices under metro emergencies in the Guangzhou Metro, we compared the performances of models that follow the RUM and random regret minimization (RRM) principles, and established a hybrid RUM-RRM model as well as a nested logit model following RRM (NL-RRM) to estimate the effects of various factors on passengers’ travel choice behaviors. Comparisons illustrate that the hybrid model and NL-RRM model can improve model fit, and the combination of RUM and RRM outperforms either of them respectively.

Abstract:
Introduction. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of resorbable blasting media (RBM) treatment on early stability of orthodontic mini-implants by mechanical, histomorphometric, and histological analyses.Methods. Ninety-six (64 for mechanical study and 32 for histological study and histomorphometric analysis) titanium orthodontic mini-implants (OMIs) with machined (machined group) or RBM-treated (CaP) surface (RBM group) were implanted in the tibiae of 24 rabbits. Maximum initial torque (MIT) was measured during insertion, and maximum removal torque (MRT) and removal angular momentum (RAM) were measured at 2 and 4 weeks after implantation. Bone-to-implant contact (BIC) and bone area (BA) were analyzed at 4 weeks after implantation.Results. RBM group exhibited significantly lower MIT and significantly higher MRT and RAM at 2 weeks than machined group. No significant difference in MRT, RAM, and BIC between the two groups was noted at 4 weeks, although BA was significantly higher in RBM group than in machined group. RBM group showed little bone resorption, whereas machined group showed new bone formation after bone resorption.Conclusions. RBM surface treatment can provide early stability of OMIs around 2 weeks after insertion, whereas stability of machined surface OMIs may decrease in early stages because of bone resorption, although it can subsequently recover by new bone apposition.

Abstract:
Blends of epoxy acrylate resins (acid values 3, 6.5 & 10 mg KOH/gm Solid) with monofunctional monomers (ethoxylated phenol monoacrylate) were prepared by physical mixing, having weight ratio 50:50. These blends were cured by using UV radiations in presence of photo initiator (Darocure 1173). The thermal degradation kinetics of these resin blends were studied, using thermo gravimetric analysis in nitrogen atmosphere at a heating rate of 10°C/min. by applying Coats-Red fern equation. According to the analysis, all the coating films degrade in two steps. In the first step of degradation kinetics, R2M follows 1.75 order (n=1.75) and all other coating films follow second order (n=2) kinetics. In second step, R2M & R3M follow half order (n=0.5) kinetics and R1M follow first order (n=1) degradation kinetics. Order of the reaction is obtained on the basis of best fit analysis, and all the parameters were confirmed by regression analysis. From the reaction order, value of activation energy (E) and pre exponential factor (Z) were calculated by the slop and intercept of the plot between X and Y, respectively.

Abstract:
Osteoblast-osteoclast interaction plays an important role in the bone remodeling. During long duration space flight, astronauts undergo serious bone loss mainly due to the disruption of equivalence between bone formation and bone resorption. Osteoclast precursors often operate under the control of osteoblasts. However, here we show that the osteoclast precursors could in turn influence osteoblasts. RAW264.7 cells, the murine osteoclast precursors, were treated in the simulated weightlessness produced by a Random Positioning Machine (RPM). After 72 h, conditioned mediums (CM) by the RAW264.7 cells from RPM (RCM) or static control (CCM) were collected and were used to culture osteoblastic-like MC3T3-E1 cells. The results showed that the RCM culture inhibited cell viability and slightly altered cell cycle, but the morphology of the MC3T3-E1 cells was not changed by RCM compared to that of CCM. Furthermore, the intracellular ALP level, NO release and expression of osteoblastic marker genes were all down-regulated by RCM culture. These results suggest that osteoclast precursors subjected to RPM exert negative regulation on osteoblasts.

Abstract:
Route choice is one of the most critical passenger behaviors in public transit research. The utility maximization theory is generally used to model passengers’ route choice behavior in a public transit network in previous research. However, researchers have found that passenger behavior is far more complicated than a single utility maximization assumption. Some passengers tend to maximize their utility while others would minimize their regrets. In this paper, a schedule-based transit assignment model based on the hybrid of utility maximization and regret minimization is proposed to study the passenger route choice behavior in an urban rail transit network. Firstly, based on the smart card data, the space-time expanded network in an urban rail transit was constructed. Then, it adapts the utility maximization (RUM) and the regret minimization theory (RRM) to analyze and model the passenger route choice behavior independently. The utility values and the regret values are calculated with the utility and the regret functions. A transit assignment model is established based on a hybrid of the random utility maximization and the random regret minimization (RURM) with two kinds of hybrid rules, namely, attribute level hybrid and decision level hybrid. The models are solved by the method of successive algorithm. Finally, the hybrid assignment models are applied to Beijing urban rail transit network for validation. The result shows that RRM and RUM make no significant difference for OD pairs with only two alternative routes. For those with more than two alternative routes, the performance of RRM and RUM is different. RRM is slightly better than RUM in some of the OD pairs, while for the other OD pairs, the results are opposite. Moreover, it shows that the crowd would only influence the regret value of OD pair with more commuters. We conclude that compared with RUM and RRM, the hybrid model RURM is more general.

Feature subsampling techniques help to create diverse for classifiers ensemble. In this article we investigate two feature subsampling-base ensemble methods - Random Subspace Method (RSM) and Rotation Forest Method (RFM) to explore their usability with different learning algorithms and the robust on noise data. The experiments show that RSM with IBK work better than RFM and AdaBoost, and RFM with tree classifier and rule classifier achieve prominent improvement than others. We also find that Logistic algorithm is not suitable for any of the three ensembles. When adding classification noise into original data sets, ensembles outperform singles at lower noisy level but fail to maintain such superior at higher noisy level.

Abstract:
Modelling the mode choice behaviours of travellers is a key to design effective transport management policies, particularly in shifting travellers to public transport. Abundant studies have analysed the impact of level of services on mode choice preferences through its Random Utility Maximization (RUM), but the possibility of minimalize the regret have been overlooked. This paper will discusses the possibility of using generalised Random Regret Minimization (G-RRM) model on choosing transportation modes. The study is performed in two cities for comparison: Jogjakarta in Indonesia and Matsuyama in Japan. A stated preference (SP) survey isconducted, in which respondents choose Bike or Bus under hypothetical situations. As the result of RUM revealed that travellers prefer the transportation mode with more ensuring level of service. While an empirical proof of concept, the G-RRM model is estimated on a stated mode choice dataset, and its outcomes are compared with RUM and RRM counterparts.

Abstract:
We propose the replica permutation with solute tempering (RPST) by combining the replica-permutation method (RPM) and the replica exchange with solute tempering (REST). Temperature permutations are performed among more than two replicas in RPM, whereas temperature exchanges are performed between two replicas in the replica-exchange method (REM). The temperature transition in RPM occurs more efficiently than in REM. In REST, only the temperatures of the solute region, the solute temperatures, are exchanged to reduce the number of replicas compared to REM. Therefore, RPST is expected to be an improved method taking advantage of these methods. For comparison, we applied RPST, REST, RPM, and REM to two amyloid-β(16–22) peptides in explicit water. We calculated the transition ratio and the number of tunneling events in the temperature space and the number of dimerization events of amyloid-β(16–22) peptides. The results indicate that, in RPST, the number of replicas necessary for frequent random walks in the temperature and conformational spaces is reduced compared to the other three methods. In addition, we focused on the dimerization process of amyloid-β(16–22) peptides. The RPST simulation with a relatively small number of replicas shows that the two amyloid-β(16–22) peptides form the intermolecular antiparallel β-bridges due to the hydrophilic side-chain contact between Lys and Glu and hydrophobic side-chain contact between Leu, Val, and Phe, which stabilizes the dimer of the peptides.

Abstract:
We tested the hypothesis that inhibition of neurons within the rostral ventral medulla (RVM) would prolong the laryngeal chemoreflex (LCR), a putative stimulus in the sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS). We studied the LCR in 19 piglets, age 3–16 days, by injecting 0.05 ml of saline or water into the larynx during wakefulness, non-rapid eye movement (NREM) sleep, and REM sleep, before and after 1 or 10 mM muscimol dialysis in the RVM. Muscimol prolonged the LCR ( P < 0.05), and the prolongation was greater when the LCR was stimulated with water compared with saline ( P < 0.02). The LCR was longer during NREM sleep than during wakefulness and longest during REM sleep (REM compared with wakefulness). Muscimol had no effect on the likelihood of arousal from sleep after LCR stimulation. We conclude that the RVM provides a tonic facilitatory drive to ventilation that limits the duration of the LCR, and loss of this drive may contribute to the SIDS when combined with stimuli that inhibit respiration.

To obtain high-performance, PRESENT operations, including an add-round-key, a substitute layer and permutation layer operations are efficiently implemented on target embedded processors. Novel PRESENT implementations support the Electronic Code Book (ECB) and Counter (CTR). The implementation of CTR is improved by using the pre-computation for one substitute layer, two diffusion layer, and two add-round-key operations. Finally, compact PRESENT on target microcontrollers achieved 504.2, 488.2, 488.7, and 491.6 clock cycles per byte for PRESENT-ECB, 16-bit PRESENT-CTR (RAM-based implementation), 16-bit PRESENT-CTR (ROM-based implementation), and 32-bit PRESENT-CTR (ROM-based implementation) modes of operation, respectively.
