Abstract:
The Nose, which is a satirical short story by Akutagawa Ryunosuke, leaves a strong impression on readers. It is assumed that the story inspired by “Konjaku Monogatari”, a compilation of hundreds of tales from the 11th century, and N.Gogol’s The Nose in Russian Literature). By using his scalpel-sharp pen, Akutagawa Ryūnosuke explained and translated numerous social phenomena during his time living in Japan. During our study, we found that image of Tengu- a Japan traditional mythology character was refered in The Nose story through the main character’s appearance and his psychology developments.

While a white phantom of old-man or woman devily spins a translucent and frail thread on a distaff, a powerful samurai, with a fist strongly shut upon his sword, realizes that his destiny is being unwrapped there, and knows that will be torn as easily as a thread of a spider-web. Another samurai, not so young, but with his sword still ready, suffers the bleeding of his life in the land of his owns. A boy and a girl have to dress masks of demons in order to survive in a world that doesnþt allow sweetness at all. These are some of the characters and themes often found in the works of Akira Kurosawa; sinister and painful motives, usually refused by common peopleþs minds, but courageously taken by the brilliant and sensitive genius, who turns everything of these into art and beauty. This is what we search in this essay: the wedding of beauty and suffering in his movies, where it comes too the following guests: his own life, the books he read, the paintings he admired, the music he liked to put on his films, and, as an essential part of a scientific work, like Fritjoff Capra said in The Tao of Phisics, here comes my life too, as it is inevitable, being a photographer of this wedding as I am.

Iles, Timothy J. F. "Akutagawa Ryunosuke : three themes." Thesis, 1992. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/3190.

Full text
Abstract:
The aim of this study is to examine the workings of three themes within the fiction of Akutagawa Ryunosuke(1892-1927), to explore how these themes interrelate to forma portrait of their author's alienation from the world and from himself. These are: nature's hostility to the artist and his efforts to combat that; woman and her association with nature, disease, and death; and the Double as a mockery of the authored self by the authoring self. Each theme is discussed in a separate chapter; a concluding chapter explores the way in which the three themes merge in one specific short story, "Haguruma" (1927; tr. Cogwheel, 1965).

Literature and music has been tightly connected since ancient times. Mr. Akutagawa Ryunosuke is the one of few writers in recent decades who has integrated Japanese traditional culture with Western culture in his work. Based on the understanding of Japanese influence on Western music during the Meiji and the Taishou eras, the thesis analyzes the correspondence illustrating his great attainments in Western music. He has very similar background in career and art development with Schubert, Beethoven and Mozart. The study aims to understand the influence of Western music on his work, especially that of his favorite operas, Salome and Carmen, where the female images in his works are also studied.
