Full text
Abstract:
The aim of this study is to examine the workings of three themes within the fiction of Akutagawa Ryunosuke(1892-1927), to explore how these themes interrelate to forma portrait of their author's alienation from the world and from himself. These are: nature's hostility to the artist and his efforts to combat that; woman and her association with nature, disease, and death; and the Double as a mockery of the authored self by the authoring self. Each theme is discussed in a separate chapter; a concluding chapter explores the way in which the three themes merge in one specific short story, "Haguruma" (1927; tr. Cogwheel, 1965).

Literature and music has been tightly connected since ancient times. Mr. Akutagawa Ryunosuke is the one of few writers in recent decades who has integrated Japanese traditional culture with Western culture in his work. Based on the understanding of Japanese influence on Western music during the Meiji and the Taishou eras, the thesis analyzes the correspondence illustrating his great attainments in Western music. He has very similar background in career and art development with Schubert, Beethoven and Mozart. The study aims to understand the influence of Western music on his work, especially that of his favorite operas, Salome and Carmen, where the female images in his works are also studied.

Abstract:
The thesis is focused on a literary theoretical debate between two outstanding Japanese writers: Akutagawa Ryunosuke and Tanizaki Junichiro. As a reaction to this debate, Akutagawa wrote a literary critical essay Bungeitekina, amarini bungeitekina (Literary, All Too Literary) which contains Akutagawa's considerations on literature and which is analyzed in this thesis. I have also devoted my thesis to other literary theoretical essays written by Akutagawa. The goal of this thesis is to follow the influence of Akutagawa's literary considerations of his works and also to set his work into the wider context of Japanese literature. Hermeneutics is the methodology chosen for this work. To achieve the set-out goal, biographies on Akutagawa and other literary studies focused on Akutagawa were studied.

Abstract:
This dissertation examines the role of aesthetics in Japanese literary discourse, with attention to the emergence of new cross-cultural perspectives, from the late 1880s through the 1920s. Modernity in Japan was marked by the rapid and often jarring juxtapositions of new techniques and ideas from Western sources against older Japanese traditions, and my project considers how literary authors envisioned and interpreted this cultural eclecticism. In particular, I focus on their reactions to Western paintings and sculptures. The visual arts seemed to offer viewers a direct access to `universal' aesthetic values though their non-linguistic nature, and thus appealed to those seeking to attain cosmopolitan perspectives. Through analyzing Japanese writers' literary responses to foreign artworks, and their ideas on vision as an avenue of information, I investigate the changing nature of representation and signification in this new age, and the role of literary language within it. I take as the main subjects of my dissertation Mori Ogai (1862-1922), the members of the Shirakaba School such as Mushanokôji Saneatsu (1885-1976) and Shiga Naoya (1883-1971) during the period of their eponymous publication Shirakaba (1910-1923), and Akutagawa Ryûnosuke (1892-1927). Each of these authors has been both praised and denigrated for the high-minded idealism and aestheticism of his works, in no small part because of a marked tendency to employ foreign literary and artistic references. I argue that despite assessments that their works had been composed at an intellectual remove from the social and material contexts in which they lived, the ideal of aesthetics they had upheld as a fixed and transcendental principle that allowed for their appreciation of imported images and ideas of beauty, in fact catalyzed their critical assessments of their own discursive positions within Japanese society. These writers explored the links and the disjunctions between their artistic ideals--which spanned across disparate cultural and national boundaries--and their more immediate awareness of themselves as citizens of modern Japan. They discovered that for them, any attempt at cosmopolitanism had to take place within the contexts of their Japanese realities, and any thoughts about it had to be voiced through the medium of Japanese literary language. Even visual images could not ultimately elide the viewer's conceptual frameworks, and were interpreted in light of them. What resulted was thus a distinctly hybrid outlook in which their conceptions of Japan, the world, their individual identities, and their creative and critical productions, were indelibly linked with each other.

This study aims to explore one of the modern literature witers of Japan, Akutagawa Ryunosuke and the image elements presented in his works. He was born almost the same time as the existence of Japanese movies, from his works, 『tuioku』and 『fusyoudan』, we can feel his great concerns about moves clearly.During Akutagawa’s late years, he promoted the concept of「hanasirasiihanasinonaisyousetu」within his work, 『Bungeiteki na, amarini Bungeitekina』, 「enitikaisyousetu」was as if the images are shown individually from every space. The forms of 「keisiki」and 「sitekinaseisin」 were matched with 「Image elements」, because the people and things in the novels were actually performed which influenced the visual impressions. Through the visual impressions reflected by images of people and things in the novels, we can speculate Akutagawa’s inner landscape. By inspection analysis, Akutagawa’s late years’s work,『Nankin no Kirisuto』(1920), was a work which could be accomplished by the images of dark and light of the space.Another work,『Shonen』in 1924 was same as the above , which can feel dramatically changes of far and near with separated chapters.『Mirage』(1927) was the concrete work of so-called 「sitekinaseisin」in 「hanasirasiihanasinonaisyousetu」which can display uneasy and worried of his late years. This research combines the concept of 「hanasirasiihanasinonaisyousetu」 with the techniques of images performance promoted by Akutagawa Ryunosuke which presented his consciousness of performance through the inventions of this three novels. The characteristics of Akutagawa Ryunosuke in literature writing could be found in the performance consciousness inspection of his works as well.

The purpose of this study is to explore the acceptance of modern Japanese writers’ works in Songfen Guo’s literary creations, as a writer who grew up in the end of the Japanese rule and exiled in the United States. After the failure of the Defend Diaoyutai Movement, Songfen Guo resumed his work as writer in 1983. Past research has repeatedly mentioned that Songfen Guo’s works should be deeply influenced by Japanese modern literature, and Songfen Guo himself has clearly pointed out that writers Akutagawa Ryunosuke, Kawabata Yasunari are his respected writers. However, no specific comparative studies have been implemented yet. Therefore, this study selected Songfen Guo’s “Grass”, “On writing”, “Moon seal”. By examining the contents of these three works and compared with “Kappa”, “The man of west”, “Absorbed in writing popular novels” by Akutagawa and “The moon on the water” by Kawabata, it can be seen to understand how he explained, cited and derived the literary works of these two modern Japanese writers. This study firstly examines Songfen Guo’s collections and interviews to confirm evidence of his relationship with Japanese modern writers. On top of that, the second chapter of this study focuses on the relationship between Akutagawa and Songfen Guo. By comparing the similar experiences and specific text analysis, we can obtain the common points of the two writers. Furthermore, the third chapter of this study is to derive in the similar setting and description between Kawabata’s “The moon on the water” and Songfen Guo’s “Moon seal”. Both works are interpreted in the setting of the characters about “Wife caregiver /Cared Husband” behind, thus there is a gender consciousness of “dominant men/dominated women.” The connection between the creations of the two writers is thereby demonstrated. Based on the results of the above investigations, we can find that Songfen Guo uses the Japanese modern literature to describe the survival dilemma of the post-war Taiwanese people and the mental pain they carry. Through this analysis, we will be better able to grasp the literary qualities of Songfen Guo’s works performance.

Ryunosuke Akutagawa has been deeply appreciated the darker side of human nature since he was disappointed in a love affair in the beginning of the year 1915. At the same time, he was also concerned about Unselfish Love and explored it in his stort stories that treat the theme of Christianity, namely the Kirishitan. Akutagawa was not a Christian, but he was deeply interested in Christianity. While he was a student in the First High School, he had alreadly begun to read "Holy Bible", and until he took his own life at the age of 35, he still tried to find the salvation in "Holy Bible". Even though Akutagawa could'nt believe in God finally, it's clear that his writing has been influenced by Christianity. For instance, all the writings of Akutagawa that have been published are over 166 written pieces, and there are approximately 10% of the writings are relevant to Christianity. Accordingly, what Akutagawa pursued Unselfish Love by Kirishitan Stories is bound up with he was interested in Christianity all the year round. In addition, mention the Unselfish Love in Christianity, a sacred love whith is the symbol of God's and Jesus Christ's love, namely agapē is a typical example. Are there any correlation between agapē and Unselfish Love of whith Akutagawa described in Kirishitan stories? This point is also worth exploring. For this reason, this thesis is analysed the expression of Unselfish Love in six written pieces of Kirishitan stories, including 'Ogata Ryosai Memorandum', 'The Martyr', 'The Story of St. Christopher', 'Juriano-Kichisuke', 'Christ in Nanking', and 'Ogin' to probing Akutagawa's intention in the pursuit of Unselfish Love and his understanding of Christianity.

“YASUKICHIMONO” means a series of novel that “Horikawa Yasukichi” plays the leading role written by Ryunosuke Akutagawa. Furthermore, these novels are mainly referring to his experience of being an English drillmaster in Japanese navy organ school in Yokosuka from 1916 to 1919. Comparing with Ryunosuke Akutagawa’s well-known historical novel "RASHOMON" (1915),"HANA (the nose)" (1916) and so on, although this series didn’t receive high attention as them, we can recognize Ryunosuke Akutagawa’s opinion about the expansion of Japanese navy’s armament during World War I, the ideological trend of socialism, the influence of the 1923 Great Kanto earthquake and so on. It may be said that “YASUKICHIMONO” plays an unusual role in Ryunosuke Akutagawa’s literature. From the time"YASUKICHIMONO" published in 1923, it was regarded as “Ich-Roman” (a form of private novel that popular in Japanese literature), and researchers concern "YASUKICHIMONO" as the reflection that Ryunosuke Akutagawa started to expose himself in his late era of writing. Ryunosuke Akutagawa resists private exposure in his writings as an exclusion of naturalism literature since the beginning of his literature works. If it is true that Ryunosuke Akutagawa compromise his principles on writing attitude to naturalism by "YASUKICHIMONO" which early researcher’s conclusion said, why did Ryunosuke Akutagawa carry a third person character "Horikawa Yasukichi" in his writing? This is an intensely interesting question that “YASUKICHIMONO” left. By thorough study of “YASUKICHIMONO " and works concerned in this paper, we can identify not only Ryunosuke Akutagawa’s attitude toward current affairs of 1910-20s, but also his change of writing stance. A change of aptitude in theme’s choice is occurred in “YASUKICHIMONO”. Ryunosuke Akutagawa tried to shift his writing theme from history to modern daily life, and show his contemplation to individual.

The research purpose of this study is mainly focused on the features of Ryunosuke Akutagawa''s literature for children. I first make a comparison with the original text to elicit the points that are different from the original text. Then I base the study on the three main topics to explore the features of Ryunosuke Akutagawa''s literature for children. I also include Ryunosuke Akutagawa''s personal, writing, and social background to explore his mind; finally I incorporate the viewpoint of chind''s mind in Ryunosuke Akutagawa''s personal mind to explore the connections among him and his children''s literature, his child mind, and his attitude when composing his works. This thesis can be separated into five chapters. Chapter I is a comparison with the original text. Chapter II— The Main Topic Related to Religion: Centered on Salvation and Awakening. I first analyze the features of salvation and meaning of “awakening.” Also I explore Ryunosuke Akutagawa''s life philosophy in the process of analyzing. Chapter III: Bushido. I first decode the Bushido spirit and its transformation in Ryunosuke Akutagawa''s works and then explore Ryunosuke Akutagawa''s viewpoints according to the social status and Ryunosuke Akutagawa''s background in the entangled time. Chapter IV: Maternal Consciousness. I examine the literature work and life of the writer from the viewpoint of maternal consciousness. I first analyze the maternal symbols in the literature works and later discuss them with the formation of connection between maternal consciousnesses. Secondly, I explore the meaning of “maternal image” in Ryunosuke Akutagawa''s life. Final Chapter: Ryunosuke Akutagawa and literature. I start with the viewpoint of children''s mind, incorporated with the former analyses, to explore “Ryunosuke Akutagawa''s personal positioning of his literature for children”, “What does Ryunosuke Akutagawa''s literature for children mean to him”, “the child''s mind in Ryunosuke Akutagawa”, and “ the expectation in Ryunosuke Akutagawa''s child''s mind.” This thesis proposed the three characteristics of Ryunosuke Akutagawa''s literature for children: self-salvation, courage, and a kind mother embracing the kid

Ryunosuke Akutagawa was a Japanese writer active in the Taisho period in Japan. He was interested in both classical Chinese and Japanese literatures, and he was fluent in Chinese from an early age. After primary school, the introduction of European literature had a strong influence on him; he started to immerse himself in Western literature. Therefore, many adaptations of Ryunosuke’s works from early stage were adapted from multiple literatures (“hon ann” in Japanese). The themes in his early adaptations are reflected on the focus of 2 or 3 main characters. We will take a close look at Ryunosuke’s early adaptations and discuss the human images in his literature. As well, we will talk about the similarities in the personality, thinking as well as actions of Ryunosuke’s characters through the comparison of his works and that of the original. In different themes, what images were caused by characters in creations? Are there common or different points among these images? Or as previous scholar’s statement, women portrayed as negative in Ryunosuke’s works? Can positive images be found? What messages were Ryunosuke trying to convey? This essay will emphasize on the above mentioned points. After some close study, I found out that in his dynastic adaptations “Rashomon”, “Chuutou” ,“Hana” which were adapted from Japanese sources “Konjaku monogatari” etc., humans in stories were being portrayed as in agony, oppression, misanthrope, contempt which were negative images in writings. On the other hand, in his children stories “Kumo no Ito”, “Toshishun”, almost all the characters show their agony, media for egoism. Nevertheless, in Ryunosuke’s novels we are still able to find many positive human attributes. Furthermore, for “What messages were Ryunosuke trying to convey?”, Ryunosuke’s personal thoughts on human nature are reflected through the common points in his characters . I believe that my thorough research and analysis will help readers better understand human image in Ryunosuke Akutagawa’s early adaptation literature.

Based on observation on Akutagawa Ryunosuke’s description of space and the mental status of the characters in his works, this study discusses the messages that Akuta Ryonosuke wants to deliver. The present studies on Akutagawa Ryunosuke are almost complete, but discussion on space description is still rare. Therefore this study explores three topics: China, mental hospital, and home, as well as to analyze the meanings the author gives to them. The main discussion is divided into three chapters, and the context analysis is conducted in each chapter to see how the space affects the characters and their mental status. Chapter 2 discusses the author’s imaginary space based on the concept of “China.” Chapter 3 analyzes “mental hospital,” a space exists between the concerning illusion and reality. Chapter 4 focuses on “home,” the space that is most similar to reality.

This thesis focuses on Ryunosuke Akutagawa’s(1892-1927) works from the perspective of the femininity. The selected works in this thesis: “Kaikanoryoujinn,” “Kikainasaikai,” “Aki,” “Konannoougi” have common in describing women in fluctuate generations. Consequently, I would like to base on this aspect to explore females’ lifestyle in different time backgrounds. In chapter 1, I will put the attention to a woman called Katsumi whose husband Miura deeply influenced by Western culture in Meiji era in the story of “Kaikanoryoujinn.” In chapter 2, I aim to explore a China woman Oasu, who was carried to Japan after First Sino-Japanese War, her mind changing and life way in the story of “Kikainasaikai.” In chapter 3, I will discuss “Aki”, a story which illustrated an educated woman Nobuko’s lifestyle in Taishō era. In chapter 4, I will centralize the discussion to a womanGannhou who lived in Konan in begin 20th century in “Konannoougi.” According to above research, we could divide three characters under Akutagawa’s writing, which are: Women with strong feminism, women with their objects, and women who are controlled by Male chauvinism. By viewing different females’ lifestyle in different times, we could counter recognize Ryunosuke Akutagawa’s prospective to 19th to 20th century.
