Abstract:
Espinosa, K., Boelter, J., Lolle, S., Hopkins, M., Goggi, S., Palmer, R. G. and Sandhu, D. 2015. Evaluation of spontaneous generation of allelic variation in soybean in response to sexual hybridization and stress. Can. J. Plant Sci. 95: 405–415. Intra-cultivar variation reported in pure lines of soybean has been hypothesized to result from genetic mechanisms contributing to de novo genetic variation. In this study we have detected allele switching by following segregation patterns of Aconitase-4 isozyme in sexual crosses and pure lines. In sexual crosses, one F2 plant showed a switch at the Aconitase-4 (Aco4) locus from the expected heterozygous genotype Aco4-ac to Aco4-ab. In the pure lines grown in a honeycomb planting design and treated with an accelerated aging test, multiple cases of allele switching were detected at the Aco4 locus. Both single and double switches were detected that were stable and heritable. These findings indicate that the generation of endogenous variation continues in pure lines as a result of intrinsic genetic mechanisms. With a long-term goal of understanding the genetic nature of the changes, we genetically mapped the Aco4 gene to a 3.3 cM region on Chromosome 11. The corresponding physical region is ∼293 kb with 39 predicted genes. Of these, Glyma.11g080600 is of particular interest, as it shows 93% and 88% identity to Medicago truncatula and Arabidopsis aconitase genes, respectively. Further characterization of the soybean Aco4 gene may shed light on genetic mechanisms responsible for allele switching.

Abstract:
The complexes [Ru(NCCH3)4bpy]2+ and [Ru([14]aneS4)bpy]2+ ([14]aneS4 = 1,4,8,11-tetrathiacyclotetradecane, bpy = 2,2′-bipyridine) have similar absorption and emission spectra but the 77 K metal-to-ligand charge-transfer (MLCT) excited state emission lifetime of the latter is less than 0.3% that of the former. Density functional theory modeling of the lowest energy triplet excited states indicates that triplet metal centered (3MC) excited states are about 3500 cm−1 lower in energy than their 3MLCT excited states in both complexes. The differences in excited state lifetimes arise from a much larger coordination sphere distortion for [Ru(NCCH3)4bpy]2+ and the associated larger reorganizational barrier for intramolecular electron transfer. The smaller ruthenium ligand distortions of the [Ru([14]aneS4)bpy]2+ complex are apparently a consequence of stereochemical constraints imposed by the macrocyclic [14]aneS4 ligand, and the 3MC excited state calculated for the unconstrained [Ru(S(CH3)2)4bpy]2+ complex (S(CH3)2 = dimethyl sulfide) is distorted in a manner similar to that of [Ru(NCCH3)4bpy]2+. Despite the lower energy calculated for its 3MC than 3MLCT excited state, [Ru(NCCH3)4bpy]2+ emits strongly in 77 K glasses with an emission quantum yield of 0.47. The emission is biphasic with about a 1 μs lifetime for its dominant (86%) emission component. The 405 nm excitation used in these studies results in a significant amount of photodecomposition in the 77 K glasses. This is a temperature-dependent biphotonic process that most likely involves the bipyridine-radical anionic moiety of the 3MLCT excited state. A smaller than expected value found for the radiative rate constant is consistent with a lower energy 3MC than 3MLCT state.

Abstract:
The optical setup for holographic projection on the scatterings in fluorescent liquids is presented. Such media can be used as volumetric screens for near-eye holographic displays, solving the problem of speckle noise and very small exit pupils in existing setups. Three different oils (canola, olive and engine oil) with 532 nm laser and tonic water with 405 nm laser are used for projecting holographic fields, the quality of such images is investigated. The laser wavelength is cut out from acquisition on a camera and only filtered fluorescent light is observed. The best and brightest results are obtained with engine oil. Full Text: PDF ReferencesX. Abstract:
A catalogue and bibliography of Batrachospermales (Rhodophyta) in China is presented. There are 33 species belonged to 10 genera and 2 families. Species distribution among the 10 gen- era are as follows: Batrachospermum, 6; Kumanoa, 10; Montagnia, 1; Nothocladus, 1; Sheathia, 3; Sirodotia, 4; Torularia, 1; Virescentia, 1; Lemanea, 4; and Paralemanea, 2. According to geo- graphical distribution, the members of Batrachospermales in China are composed of 3 types: cos- mopolitan (distributed on at least 5 continents or 10 countries of the world), 6 taxa; regionally dis- tributed (distributed in no more than 4 continents or 10 countries), 15 taxa; and endemic to China (collected, described and reported only from China), 12 taxa. Most species were distributed in East and Southwest China, up to or more than 20 species. Eight species were recorded in North and Central China, respectively. Only 1 or 2 species were found in Northeast and South China, respec- tively. However, no one has been found in the northwest China so far. Thirteen species of Batra- chospermales in China have been confirmed by morphological characteristics combining with mo- lecular data. But unfortunately, the other species are unable to obtain molecular data because fresh collections are not available, which need to be confirmed or rejected in future studies. Kylin, H. Abstract:
Inclusion is part of the promotion and exercise of citizenship, and consequently promotes the warranty of rights to all for full social participation, in a fair and egalitarian manner. Considering the several legal mechanisms created to guarantee the equality of rights and the primordial role of education in establishing the inclusion movement, this study aimed to understand through the vision of students with disabilities the educational inclusion in the public university state of the interior of São Paulo (Brazil). The study had as participants five students. In order to reach the objectives, instrument was used to collect data, a semi-structured. The results suggest that the institution does not have an effective culture of accessibility, some barriers were evidenced, such as the lack of identification in the institutional documents of the real type of deficiency that the student; support actions that the institution takes too long to offer or offers through different means than what was requested by the students, and the architectural accessibility of the campus that is not sufficient for all students to have autonomy. However, it is verified that FCL has advanced in the process of inclusion of students with disabilities, as there are some actions by the institution towards an inclusive university. It is possible to observe advances and limits in the process of inclusion of institution. Keywords: Inclusion, Student with disabilities, Higher education.ReferencesALMEIDA, J.G. Abstract:
305 Background: The most important modifiable risk factor for the development of pancreas cancer is smoking, which accounts for up to 25% of pancreatic ductal adenocarcinomas (PDAC; Maisonneuve P, Lowenfels AB: Epidemiology of pancreatic cancer: an update. Digestive Diseases 28:645-656, 2010), and the incidence of PDAC correlates with smoking prevalence (Weiss W, Benarde MA: The temporal relation between cigarette smoking and pancreatic cancer. American journal of public health 73:1403-1404, 1983). A recently published Ingenuity Pathway Analysis of GWAS genotype and risk factor data from the Pancreatic Cancer Case Control Consortium demonstrated that axon guidance signalling genes were significantly overrepresented in smokers (Tang H, Wei P, Duell EJ, et al: Axonal guidance signaling pathway interacting with smoking in modifying the risk of pancreatic cancer: A gene and pathway-based interaction analysis of GWAS data. Carcinogenesis:bgu010, 2014) and we aimed to investigate this link in our cohort. Methods: Tissue from resected PDAC were obtained from 200 patients via the Australian Pancreatic Cancer Genome Initiative with patient consent and ethical approval. Immunohistochemistry was performed on TMAs with the anti-Robo1 antibody (ab7279). The sections were scored on a 4-point scale of 0, 1, 2 and 3 intensity. All sections were scored blindly by two independent reviewers. Results: Robo1 protein expression is found in the normal pancreas, predominantly in acinar cells. In PDAC, Robo1 expression is predominantly in epithelial ductal cells. Most PDACs have Robo1 expression with an overall mean score of 1.65±0.05. 20 out of 200 patients were current smokers at the time of their pancreatectomy, 97 were never smokers, the remainder were ex-smokers. The mean score for smokers was 2.1± 0.1 and for never smokers 1.6±0.1 (p = 0.0003). Genomic analysis did not demonstrate any mutations in the Robo1 gene. There were 7 cases of loss of heterozygosity for Robo1; none of these were current smokers and they had an average score of 1.25±0.17. Conclusions: In addition to our genomic (Biankin AV, Waddell N, Kassahn KS, et al: Pancreatic cancer genomes reveal aberrations in axon guidance pathway genes. Nature 491:399-405, 2012) and methylation data (Nones K, Waddell N, Song S, et al: Genome‐wide DNA methylation patterns in pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma reveal epigenetic deregulation of SLIT‐ROBO, ITGA2 and MET signaling. International Journal of Cancer, 2014), we provide the results of protein expression of Robo1 in a clinically annotated cohort of 200 cases of PDAC. We demonstrate that patients who are currently smoking have enhanced Robo1 expression. Preliminary results indicate that this may confer a poorer prognosis when coupled with high SLIT2 expression.

Abstract Shephard, S., Minto, C., Zölck, M., Jennings, S., Brophy, D., and Reid, D. 2014. Scavenging on trawled seabeds can modify trophic size structure of bottom-dwelling fish. – ICES Journal of Marine Science, 71: 398–405. Disturbance by towed bottom-fishing gears often kills larger sensitive benthos, leading to changes in the abundance, size, and species composition of benthic communities. Short-term availability of trawl-damaged prey, and longer-term shifts in benthic prey community composition, both have the potential to affect feeding opportunities and realized dietary preferences of bottom-feeding (benthivorous) fish. To investigate these effects of bottom-fishing activity (by otter trawls, beam trawls, and dredges) on the feeding of benthivorous fish, we compared the trophic level at body size and diets of four species in areas of the Celtic Sea subject to low, intermediate, and high fishing activity. Trophic level was estimated using nitrogen stable isotope analysis, and fishing activity was quantified with vessel monitoring system (VMS) data. For whiting (Merlangius merlangus) of all sizes, trophic level was slightly lower in areas of higher fishing activity. After accounting for the results of the diet analysis, we concluded that this reflected increased scavenging of benthic invertebrates in more intensively fished areas. For megrim (Lepidorhombus whiffiagonis), the rate of increase in trophic level with size was lower with increasing fishing activity, implying that megrim may also substitute fish with lower-trophic invertebrates that can be scavenged in more intensively fished areas. For plaice (Pleuronectes platessa) and lemon sole (Microstomus kitt), no significant effects of fishing activity on trophic level were detected. We conclude that differences in the intensity of fishing activity with towed bottom gears had small but variable effects of the trophic size structure of the four species, and that this primarily reflected scavenging rather than diet changes following longer-term shifts in composition of the prey community.

Abstract:
A human dual specific phosphates (DUSP), Vaccinia H-1 related wild enzyme (VHR), dephosphorylates both phosphotyrosine and phosphoserine/phosphothreonine residue of a protein. VHR is considered as a promising therapeutic target for cancer because the cells lacking VHR are arrested at the G1-S and G2-M transitions of the cell cycle with a decreased telomerase activity. VHR being a therapeutic target for cancer is crucial to know about its stability and its assay procedure conditions. This study was conducted to verify the viability of VHR enzyme at 4°C. Protein concentration and specific activity were calculated from Bradford method and p-nitrophenylphosphate (pNPP) assay by measuring the absorbance at 595 nm and 405 nm respectively in each respective day. The absorbance showed invariable difference in protein concentration and specific activity from starting to final days. Buffers like enzyme dilution and reaction buffers played significant role in VHR enzyme stability and activity. To find out the correct buffer components for carrying out the VHR enzyme assay, several experiments were carried out by using variable constituents in enzyme dilution buffer and reaction buffer. The present study revealed that 3- component buffer system without thiol i.e. Dithiothreitol (DTT) or β-Mercaptoethanol (β-ME) as a reaction buffer and 2-N-morpholino ethanesulfonic acid (MES) buffer with DTT as an enzyme dilution buffer demonstrated invariably different in the stability throughout the experiment.DOI: http://dx.doi.org/njst.v15i2.12127Nepal Journal of Science and Technology Vol. 15, No.2 (2014) 117-122

Abstract:
This article aims to present a research result on meanings of formative practice in the context of Institutional Program of Initiation to Teaching (PIBID). As a research method, adopted the sociological phenomenology that allowed, among other aspects, to understand the symbolic dimension of formative practice for each students. One of the principles of that method consists in the perspective that senses emerge from the relation with the other, bringing to surface the idea of intersubjectivity, thus configuring a phenomenology of social relations. In order to access the senses produced in the world of life, in encounter of consciousness with the world, in specific case of this research, in the context of formative practice, semistructured interview has been used with five undergraduate students invited to give a break in the flow of life for think about teacher training. The senses revealed in this study are close to the concern with student learning, having the teacher as the main driver of this process, as well as the student and his way of learning. There are also senses about difficulties that each student presents in application of knowledge and draws attention to the relation between knowledge and reality. Sense about the teacher-student relationship reveals concern with professional and human dimension as well as authority of teacher's knowledge in the classroom with students. Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:

Lactic acid bacteria (LAB) producing exopolysaccharides (EPS) are widely used in yogurt to improve viscosity, texture and water retention capacity. These improvements were shown to be related to the intrinsic properties of EPS and their interactions with proteins rather than to their concentration. Additionally, in many countries, commercial PS are used as stabilizers in yogurt. The co-presence of in situ-produced EPS and PS could also positively or negatively influence the properties of yogurt. Up to now, the structure-function relationship of EPS has not been widely studied and is still poorly understood. This context is more challenging since all studies on the role of some intrinsic properties of EPS have been carried out in systems containing only EPS. The effects of EPS in a system containing commercial PS are still unknown. In this context this study was performed to understand the effects of some intrinsic properties of EPS produced in situ by lactic acid bacteria used alone or in the presence of commercial PS on the rheological (gel formation, firmness and viscosity), physical (syneresis) and microstructural properties of yogurt. The results obtained in this study showed that the negative charge of the PS or EPS contributed to both yogurt firmness and viscosity improvements but increased syneresis. The backbone stiffness and linearity as well as the molecular weight of PS or EPS increased yogurt viscosity. Moreover, the neutral and stiff EPS or PS were able to improve yogurt water retention capacity as compared to control. The use of PS with an anionic, rigid and linear EPS producing strain, did not show major effects on both yogurt firmness and viscosity. However, only pectin was able to improve water retention capacity. The addition of PS to yogurt fermented by neutral EPS-producing strains improved viscosity and firmness. The highest viscosity values were obtained with stiff PS. Results of this thesis reported for the first time interesting effects of some EPS and/or PS intrinsic properties in both gel formation and final yogurt properties. Such results would also help dairy manufacturers and researchers to choose the suitable EPS+ strain/PS combination to correct or improve specific properties of yogurt.

Abstract:
This project aimed to characterize the structure and composition of isolated and riparian swamps in the St. Lawrence lowlands region of southern Quebec. Vegetation surveys were made in 56 swamps distributed in two watersheds. We also collected data on soil physical characteristics, microtopography, topography and land use of those swamps. Isolated and riparian swamps showed differences in vegetation composition. Herbaceous broad-leaved plants and pteridophytes which are both associated with good soil drainage were more abundant in riparian swamp. The most important factors driving this pattern were associated with soil wetness that positively impacted plant establishment. Isolated swamps showed higher richness and diversity than riparian swamps but the latter had bigger trees. These distinctions might reflect the differences in the ecosystem services such swamps provide and suggest the need for management scenarios adapted to swamp types in order to preserve their biodiversity and associated ecosystem services.

Abstract:

The process of polyphenol extraction from cranberry and blueberry yields a fibrous matter that was studied for a potential valorization in nutraceutical applications. More precisely, this work focuses on the dietary fiber content and its associated polyphenols. These two compounds were acknowledged for their positive effects over the gastro-intestinal tract including the preservation of a healthy colonic microbiota. The polyphenol extraction process was replicated in laboratory in order to obtain cranberry and blueberry fibrous matter. These extracts were analysed for their contents in total non-starch polysaccharides (NSP) (54,3% for cranberry and 46,5% for blueberry), soluble NSP (respectively 21,9% and 21,5%), insoluble NSP (respectively 32,4% and 25%) and their respective monosaccharides composition. Rheological measurements (water and oil retention capacities, swelling capacity and viscosity) showed advantageous physical properties compared to other types of fibers. Subsequently, the non-extractable proanthocyanidins contents were quantified by spectrophotometric reading (1,3% for cranberry fibers and 2,4% for blueberry fibers). A method, employing a chaotropic agent, was specifically designed to produce fibers with a significantly reduced content in non-extractable proanthocyanidins (respectively containing 0,6% and 0,9% of PAC). Both native and modified fibers were fed to mice in order to assess their respective impact on intestinal flora. The addition of native fibers was associated with an increase in the concentration of Clostridium coccoides and Clostridium leptum and a diminution of the count of Lactobacillus whereas the concentration of Faecalibacterium praunsnitzii was exclusively increased by the use of fibers reduced in polyphenols. This observation highlighted a potential inhibitory effect of polyphenols on F. prausnitzii. Probiotics strains were therefore cultured in vitro with native and modified fibers. A bifidogenic effect and an increase of the Lactobacillus salivarius concentration were observed when substrate was cranberry or blueberry fibers. According to the type of bacteria, the differential effect monitored between native and proanthocyanidins reduced fibers underlies the flora capacity to metabolize fibers and their associated polyphenols and also a potential inhibitory effect from phenolic compounds. The cranberry and blueberry fibers could therefore constitute prebiotics that favor indirectly the reduction of gastro-intestinal diseases risks.

Abstract:
Cheese yield has always been a major concern for industrial cheese makers. By valorising whey, the main coproduct of the cheese making process, cheese makers can achieve a higher yield and a lower waste output. However, these operations could be optimized. By studying a direct steam injection (DSI) process, this project aimed to optimize the transformation of whey protein concentrates into a dairy ingredient oriented towards the increase in cheese yields. Since DSI has not been used before in this particular context, the process was modelled to describe its yield and predict the functional properties of the aggregates produced. The models created allowed the description of denaturation and aggregation mechanisms that had not been observed before. They have also allowed identifying temperature and pH as the best parameters of the process to achieve the ideal functional properties for cheese reincorporation.

Abstract:
During growth, oocytes store large quantities of maternal mRNAs within their cytoplasm. These mRNAs can then be translated into proteins at different times to sustain oocyte maturation and early development, up until a crucial step in development: the embryonic genome activation. Three categories of mRNAs can be identified during this period: stored mRNAs, mRNAs in the process of being translated (polyribosomal mRNAs) and mRNAs fated for decay. Of these three categories, only polyribosomal mRNAs have an impact on the underlying cell physiology. Within this text, we have developed a method to isolate polyribosomal mRNAs to facilitate the study of oocyte and early embryo physiology. This methodology allowed us to investigate the energetic metabolism of mitochondria and protein synthesis during oocyte maturation. All five mitochondrial complexes as well as energy production are strongly incapacitated during oocyte maturation. The direct impact of such an incapacitation is a limitation of ATP production by mitochondria and the initiation of quiescence within the oocyte which results in an important diminution of translational potential. These discoveries caused us to start inquiring about the presence of alternative mechanisms which could sustain the energetic needs of the oocyte during maturation. The transfer of molecules such as AMP and AMPc from the cumulus and the salvage of AMPs freed during the degradation of the poly(A) tail of maternal mRNAs appear to be two important mechanisms which could sustain the energetic needs of the oocyte. Thus, it seems that oocyte maturation represents not only a period of preparation for fertilization through a nuclear, cytoplasmic and molecular maturation but also a period of entry into quiescence and metabolic slow down in order to survive the long wait before fertilization and subsequent embryonic genome activation.

Abstract:
The Swiss dairy sector ended its quotas of production in 2009 after 32 years of supply management. A policy of mandatory contracts between manufacturers and producers then took place. The producers regroup, sometimes with a manufacturer, to help in negotiation and in the deliveries. The passage of regulation policy, supply management, to a coordination policy, mandatory contracts, raises the issue of the capacity of the policy to achieve the goals set by the government and the requests of the industry. Thus, using semi-structured interviews and a review of the literature and the markets, it has been observed that the goals of institutions have been achieved. For the manufacturers, their requests seems to have been completed, unlike the producers’. Based on these results, it appears that a mandatory contract policy should include monitoring mechanisms and enforcement.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Metabolomic profiling of obese individuals revealed high blood levels of branched-chain amino acids (BCAA) possibly linked to altered adipose tissue BCAA catabolism. We examined plasmatic AA profiling linked with visceral obesity and cardiometabolic risk factors as well as gene expression and protein abundance of BCAA-catabolizing enzymes in adipose tissue of lean-to-obese women. We showed that obese women had significantly higher circulating BCAA, glutamate and tyrosine levels. Moreover, circulating BCAA levels were positively related to glucose homeostasis variables in addition to total and subcutaneous adiposity markers while glutamate and C3 acylcarnitine levels were positively associated with visceral adipose tissue area and triglycerides. Obese women had lower expression and protein levels of BCAA-catabolizing enzymes in visceral adipose tissue specifically. The results of this study suggest that plasma concentrations of BCAA, tyrosine and glutamate are elevated in obese individuals. This could be associated with a reduction in expression and protein abundance of BCAA-catabolizing enzymes mainly observed in omental adipose tissue of obese individuals.

Abstract:
AbstractThis chapter investigates extreme rainfall events that caused flood during summer months of June–September 2010–2014. The aim is to determine the impact of horizontal moisture flux divergence (HMFD) and vertical wind shear on forecasting extreme rainfall events over Nigeria. Wind divergence and convective available potential energy (CAPE) were also examined to ascertain their threshold values during the events. The data used include rainfall observation from 40 synoptic stations across Nigeria, reanalyzed datasets from ECMWF at 0.125° × 0.125° resolution and the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) dataset at resolution of 0.25° × 0.25°. The ECMWF datasets for the selected days were employed to derive the moisture flux divergence, wind shear, and wind convergence. The derived meteorological parameters and the CAPE were spatially analyzed and superimposed on the precipitation obtained from the satellite data. The mean moisture flux and CAPE for some northern Nigerian stations were also plotted for 3 days prior to and 3 days after the storm. The result showed that HMFD and CAPE increased few days before the storm and peak on the day of the storms, and then declined afterwards. HMFD values above 1.0 × 10−6 g kg−1 s−1 is capable of producing substantial amount of rainfall mostly above 50 mm while wind shear has a much weaker impact on higher rainfall amount than moisture availability. CAPE above 1000 Jkg−1 and 1500 Jk−1 are favorable for convection over the southern and northern Nigeria, respectively. The study recommends quantitative analysis of moisture flux as a valuable short-term severe storm predictor and should be considered in the prediction of extreme rainfall.

Abstract:
AbstractOriginally, the concept of resilience refers to one’s capacity to cope with unexpected shocks and unpredictable situations. Originating from ecological theories, the approach has gained ground in social sciences. In the context of education, the concept has been applied to explain how disadvantaged students can overcome structural constraints and become educationally successful and socially mobile (Werner, E. E., Vulnerable but invincible: a longitudinal study of resilient children and youth. McGraw-Hill, New York, 1982; Masten A. S., American Psychologist 56: 227–238, 2001; Reid, R., Botterrill L. C., Australian Journal of Public Administration 72:31–40, 2013; Máté, D., Erdélyi Társadalom 13:43–55, 2015).This paper is based on the analysis of the Hungarian National Assessment of Basic Competences (NABC) database which has been conducted annually since 2001. We created a typology of school resilience based on the schools’ social and ethnic profile as well as their performance indicators. We defined those schools resilient which over perform others with similar social intake, and we also identified irresilient schools which underperform others with similar social intake. The school types were created by correlating the socio-economic status index (SES) and school performance.Since the NABC database provides us with data on the estimated rate of Roma students in each school, it is possible to take into account the schools’ ethnic intake in the analysis of resilience. We conducted statistical analyses to compare the performance of resilient and irresilient schools in the light of the ratio of Roma students. Finally, we seek answers to the question whether ethnic segregation correlates with school achievement in Hungary. We could identify some crucial institutional factors contributing to resilience (or school success) in the case of schools with relatively high proportion of Roma students.

Abstract:
AbstractUnruptured brain AVMs (bAVMs) remain a controversial subject for practicing neurosurgeons, especially in the light of ARUBA and other observational studies. This retrospective study aims to analyze our experience with unruptured bAVMs to see whether it is beneficial in the long-term and how it corresponds to large literature trials. The study comprised 160 adult patients with unruptured bAVMs surgically treated in Burdenko NMC (Moscow) in 2009–2017. Mean age: 33.4 ± 10лет. Clinical presentations were: seizures in 99 (61.9%), chronical headaches—49 (30.6%), ischemic symptoms—4 (2.5%), asymptomatic in 8 (5%) patients. Spetzler-Martin scale: I—18 pt. (11.3%), II—71 pt. (44.4%), III—60 pt. (37.5%), IV—11 pt. (6.8%). Good outcomes (mRS = 0–2) at discharge were achieved in 149 (93.1%), satisfactory (mRS—3)—9 (5.6%). Follow-up was complete for 97 (60.6%) patients, mean—59.3 (13–108 month). Excellent outcomes (mRS = 0–1) reached in 94.8%. For epilepsy patients, Engel I outcome was found in 50 (84.8%); for chronic headaches, 43 (66.1%) patients reported improvement. Postoperative visual field defects were followed in 22 of 55 (40%), complete recovery was reported in 6 (27%) and partial recovery in 8 (36%) patients. Overall, our results support the conclusion that surgery for low-grade bAVMs (S-M I–II) is a beneficial, low-risk option.

Abstract:
Palakodety Radha Krishna of the Indian Institute of Chemical Technology observed (Synlett 2012, 2814) high stereocontrol in the addition of allyltrimethylsilane to the cyclic imine derived from 1. The product piperidine 2 was carried onto (+)-deoxoprosopinine 3. Glenn C. Micalizio of Scripps Florida condensed (J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2012, 134, 15237) the amine 4 with 5. The ensuing intramolecular dipolar cycloaddition led to 6, which was carried onto the Dendrobates alkaloid (–)-205B 7. Pei-Qiang Huang of Xiamen University showed (Org. Lett. 2012, 14, 4834) that the quaternary center of 9 could be established with high diastereoselectivity by activation of the lactam 8, then sequential addition of two different Grignard reagents. Subsequent stereoselective intramolecular aldol condensation led to FR901843 10. More recently, Professor Huang, with Hong-Kui Zhang, also of Xiamen University, published (J. Org. Chem. 2013, 78, 455) a full account of this work. In an elegant application of the power of phosphine-catalyzed intermolecular allene cycloaddition, Ohyun Kwon of UCLA added (Chem. Sci. 2012, 3, 2510) 12 to the imine 11 to give 13. The cyclization elegantly set two of the four stereogenic centers of (+)-ibophyllidine 14. Tohru Fukuyama of the University of Tokyo initiated (Angew. Chem. Int. Ed. 2012, 51, 11824) a cascade cyclization between the enone 15 and the chiral auxiliary 16. The product lactam 17 was carried onto (–)-lycoposerramine-S 18. Mark Lautens explored (J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2012, 134, 15572) the utility of the intramolecular aryne ene reaction, as illustrated by the cyclization of 19 to 20. Oxidation cleavage of the vinyl group of 20 followed by an intramolecular carbonyl ene reaction led to (±)-crinine 21.

Abstract:
Klavs S. Jensen of MIT showed (Angew. Chem. Int. Ed. 2014, 53, 470) that “batch” kinetics could be developed in flow by online IR analysis and continuous control. Professor Jensen also demonstrated (Org. Process Res. Dev. 2014, 18, 402) the continuous flow production of an active pharmaceutical product, the direct renin inhibitor aliskiren, over two steps and two crystallizations, starting from two advanced intermediates. Michael Werner and Rainer E. Martin of Hoffmann-La Roche AG Basel combined (Angew. Chem. Int. Ed. 2014, 53, 1704) flow synthesis with a flow-based bioassay to develop structure–activity relationships for a series of β-secretase inhibitors. Carlos Mateos of Lilly S. A. and C. Oliver Kappe of the University of Graz used (J. Org. Chem. 2014, 79, 223) flow photolysis to promote the bromination of 1 to 2. Alessandro Palmieri of the University of Camerino and Stefano Protti of the University of Pavia added (Adv. Synth. Catal. 2014, 356, 753) the aldehyde 3 to the acceptor 4 to give, after in-flow reduction, the lactone 5. Peter H. Seeberger of the Max Planck Institute Mühlenberg showed (Org. Lett. 2014, 16, 1794) that the tumbling action of flow photolysis made the production of 7 by the unlinking of 6 from the polymer bead particularly efficient. Enzymes can also be used under flow conditions. Jörg Pietruszka of the Heinrich-Heine-Universität Düsseldorf employed (Adv. Synth. Catal. 2014, 356, 1007) commercial laccase to prepare 10 by coupling 8 with 9. Gas–liquid mixing under flow conditions can also be effective. Núria López of ICIQ Catalonia and Javier Pérez-Ramírez of ETH Zurich developed (Chem. Eur J. 2014, 20, 5926) conditions for the selective hydrogenation of an alkyne 11 to the cis alkene 12. Jun-ichi Yoshida of Kyoto University trapped (Chem. Eur J. 2014, 20, 7931) the intermediate organolithium from 13 with CO₂ to give a carboxylate that was carried on to the purifiable O-Su ester 14, ready for further coupling. Timothy F. Jamison, also of MIT, prepared (Angew. Chem. Int. Ed. 2014, 53, 3353) the amino phenol 17 by adding the chloromagnesium amide from 16 to the intermediate benzyne from 15, then oxidizing the product with air.

Abstract:
Martin Oestreich of the Technische Universität Berlin developed (Eur. J. Org. Chem. 2014, 2077) the Birch reduction product 2 as a donor for the silylation of an alcohol 1 to give 3. Atahualpa Pinto of the SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry devised (Tetrahedron Lett. 2014, 55, 2600) conditions for the monosilylation of the diol 4 to give 5. Quanxuan Zhang of Michigan State University reported (Tetrahedron Lett. 2014, 55, 3384) the preparation (not illustrated) of the mono-THP ethers of symmetrical diols. The product from the Mitsunobu coupling of an acid with an alcohol 6 can be difficult to purify. Takashi Sugimura of the University of Hyogo showed (Synthesis 2013, 45, 931) that the oxidation product from 7 and the reduction product from 8 could both be removed from the product 9 by simple extraction. David Milstein of the Weizmann Institute of Science found (Angew. Chem. Int. Ed. 2014, 53, 4685) that an Fe catalyst could be used to reduce the trifluoroacetate 10 to 11. Jean-Michel Vatèle of the Université Lyon 1 oxidized (Synlett 2014, 25, 115) the benzylidene acetal 12 selectively to the monobenzoate 13. Xinyu Liu of the University of Pittsburgh organized (Chem. Commun. 2014, 50, 3155) a family of acid-sensitive esters that can be selectively removed in the presence of other esters, as exemplified by the conversion of 14 to 15. Ryo Yazaki and Takashi Ohshima of Kyushu University observed (Angew. Chem. Int. Ed. 2014, 53, 1611) that an amine would add spontaneously to acrylonitrile 17 to give 18. In the presence of a Cu catalyst, alcohols added to 17 even more readily, allowing the preparation of 18 from 16. Diego Gamba-Sánchez of the Universidad de los Andes used (J. Org. Chem. 2014, 79, 4544) simple Fe catalysts to activate a wide range of amides, including 20, to become acylating agents, converting 19 to 21. 1,2-Addition to t-butylsulfanylimines is widely used to construct aminated stereogenic centers. Xiaodong Yang and Hongbin Zhang of Yunnan University established (Chem. Commun. 2014, 50, 6259) a general protocol for cleaving the N–S bond in the product 22 to give the desired free amine 23.

Abstract:
AbstractThe urgency for developing a circular economy is growing, and more and more companies and organisations are concerned with the importance of adapting their business to fit a changing economy. However, many analyses on the circular economy are still rather abstract and there is a lack of understanding about what circularity would mean for specific industries. This insufficient insight especially seems to be apparent in the building and construction sector. Besides, the building and construction sector is responsible for a major part of energy use and emissions. To tackle the issue of insufficient insight into the business consequences of circular devlopments, further research is necessary. Therefore, we propose to collaborate on a research project that aims to provide a more detailed level of analysis. The goal is to identify drivers and barriers to make better use of materials in the building and construction sector. This further research would benefit from an international collaboration between universities of applied sciences and industry from different European countries. An additional benefit of the applied orientation would be the relevance for professional education programmes. References CBS, PBL & Wageningen UR. (2017). Abstract:
