Full textSea buckthorn oils (Hippophaё Rhamnoides L.) have therapeutic interest due to their medicinal properties. Three oil types of different composition can be extracted from the fruit: soft parts (pulp, peel) and seeds. There are many extraction methods such as those with solvents or supercritical fluids that have been successfully used for sea buckthorn. However, the use of enzymes for extraction of sea buckthorn oils has not been studied yet, although this method has shown good results for other fruits and vegetables. In this study, three hydrolases capable to hydrolyze the pulp and seed cell walls have been chosen to extract sea buckthorn oils (cv. Indian Summer). The extraction performance was compared to those obtained with the extraction with chloroform-methanol, used as a reference method. Results obtained for pulp oil extraction with commercial enzymes Viscozyme L and Pectinex Ultra SP-L, showed the best yields of 22,64± 0,03% and 19,23±0,03%, respectively, at pH 4.0. The seed-peel oil was extracted with two enzymes mixtures, Celluclast-Pectinex Ultra SP-L and Celluclast-Viscozyme, and compared to the control, which was an extraction in presence or absence of hexane. Both enzyme mixtures showed similar results in terms of extraction yield. An approximate increase of 28.0 % of seed-peel oils were obtained when using enzymes compared to the control extraction. The oil composition obtained using the above techniques do not present significant differences with literature values for each type of oil. Pulp oil was characterized by high contents of palmitic acid (36.3%), palmitoleic acid (40%), and low contents of oleic (4.61%) and linoleic (9.78%) acids, whereas, the seed – peel oil (a mixed oil) contained moderate amounts of palmitic (20.6%), palmitoleic (20.0%), linoleic (22.97%) and linoleic (20.83%) acids. The triglyceride analysis corroborated the fatty acids results.

Full textA strong demand, together with high local production costs, made Japan become the world’s biggest importer of swine meat. For Denmark, Canada and the USA, three important exporters, the state of the competition on this attractive but strongly competitive market of export is of the highest importance. Thus, it turns out essential for them to be able to estimate their competitiveness. In this paper, the method proposed by Goldberg and Knetter (1999), based on the measure of the residual demand elasticity, is implemented. The time series analysis is emphasized, with the development and use of a bootstrap unit root test. Estimation results bring finally to light the imperfect competition characterizing the Japanese market of swine meat.

Full textThe marketing of the pork to be slaughtered in Quebec is done within the framework of a collective marketing. In 2009, the electronic auction, a virtual channel of sale managed by an office of pork producers, was abolished. For the first time in the history of the collective marketing in this industry, one introduced the possibility of direct relationships between purchasers and producers. The literature of the supply chain management and the transaction costs economics suggest such relations imply a closer and more competitive vertical coordination. Importance to take into account the institutional framing which offers the collective marketing is also shown. The nature of these changes was analyzed in order to characterize this new way of coordinating the transactions. The impacts of this change in vertical coordination on the performance were located by mobilizing a multicriterion grid of analysis. The analysis thus revealed a closer coordination, modifying the mode of adaptation to the unforeseen, the rules of the game and their sources, the control and the incentives of actors implied in the transactions. Product quality, the flexibility of the relation between producer and purchaser, the balance of the chains in the sector as well as the nature and the level of transaction costs are the main impacts identified as regards performance of vertical coordination. A still appreciable but changing role of marketing board in the framing of these transactions was also reported by the participants met.

Full textEmbryo selection efficiency for single embryo transfer in human fertility treatment is still impaired by low pregnancy rates because evaluation methods based on embryo morphology for predicting embryo quality have significant limitations. To overcome this situation, usually more than one embryo are transferred in patient, leading to high risk of multiple pregnancies associated with important health risk to both mother and child. Therefore, the development of an accurate method to select high quality embryos is essential to achieve high pregnancy rates with single embryo transfer. Tight communication exists between the follicular cells (FCs) and the oocyte during follicle maturation to achieve developmental competence. In this way, markers in the surrounding FCs could determine oocyte developmental competence. In this work, we have identified 10 potential FCs markers involved in oocyte developmental competence. Five markers, 3βHSD1, FDX1, SERPINE2, CYP19A and CDC42 were significantly more expressed in pooled samples of FCs associated to an embryo leading to a pregnancy compared to FCs from embryos with failure in their development. In individual patients presenting both embryo with pregnancy results and embryo with failure in its development, we have identified four markers, PGK1, RGS2, RGS3 and again CDC42 associated to pregnancy results. The best predictors for ongoing pregnancy were PGK1 and RGS2. Finally, four markers, PHLDA1, UGP2 and again PGK1 and CDC42 were associated to pregnancy outcome in FCs related to follicles associated with good morphological transferred embryos with or without pregnancy results. Most of these markers could be related to granulosa luteinisation process. The identification of these markers of follicular competence paves the way on a possible application in fertility clinic in order to improve embryo selection in human assisted reproduction. The development of a predictive model based on FCs gene expression and embryo morphology evaluation could be useful to select in a same patient the most promising embryo to give a pregnancy.

Full textThe goal of this research project consists to reduce the ammonia emissions produced from the floor in growing-finishing pig barns. To do this, three main factors were investigated: the slats section shapes, the presence of an epoxy coating and the presence of a notch along the slats. This project is divided into two parts. The first part consisted to develop slats allowing to reduce the soiled surfaces. Prototypes developed during this part of the project resulted in soiled surfaces reduction ranging between 41 and 80 %, compared to a control slat. The second part consisted to measure ammonia emission of the developed prototypes when subjected to fouling simulations. Only the presence of a notch allowed to reduce ammonia emissions significantly. Emission reductions measured ranged between 22 and 42 %, in comparison with a control slat.

Full textThe goal of the present study was to reveal the genetic diversity within and among different West African populations of the root parasite Striga gesnerioides. This plant parasitizes many species from different dicotyledonous families, including cowpea (Vigna unguiculata), an important legume crop and the major dietary protein source for many people of the semi-arid regions of West Africa. Some resistant cowpea varieties have been identified and are used in breeding programs. However, based on host-parasite interactions in the field, various races of S. gesnerioides attacking cowpea have been identified. Using three different types of molecular markers, AFLP, ISSR and cpSSR, we showed that there is almost no genetic variability within populations. The variability between the populations was also extremely low and did not allow discrimination of the five races. A few populations were more closely related, and there was a certain geographical structure but no “racial” clustering could be seen, enhancing the fact that virulence is not yet involved in the genetic differentiation process. Possible causes of the extremely low level of genetic variability seen in S. gesnerioides are proposed including the autogamous mode of reproduction of the parasite and the hypothesis that the cowpea strain has only quite recently arisen.
