Abstract:

The Gatsrand (as a series of ridges) is not only a well-known geographical feature in the Western Transvaal but also features prominently as a definite area in the settlement history of the Whites in the Transvaal. In fact, the first farms in this area were registered simultaneously with farms in the neighbouring Mooi River area. Due to the inhabitants' agrarian predisposition up to the early years of the twentieth century, agriculture and stock farming formed the basis of the area's economic infrastructure. Initially the Potchefstroom market was the nearest outlet for products. Later on products were also sold at Johannesburg, Randfontein and Krugersdorp. In the process of development of this enterprise, stock diseases, droughts, poverty and wars continually set the inhabitants back. Prior to the establishment of gold mines (since 1937) in the northern areas of the Gatsrand, which enhanced economic development, the area's development was mainly dependent on the subsistence needs of the surrounding towns. In this respect the building of roads to places like Krugersdorp, Randfontein, Pretoria and Johannesburg was beneficial to the Gatsrand as all these routes passed through this area. Administrative duties were initially performed by a field cornet and later by a justice of the peace, who was subordinate to the magistrate of Potchefstroom. In a similar fashion educational matters were handled by the Potchefstroom School Board. Until 1948, with the exception of Klipdrift School, there were only primary schools on several farms in the area which had from one to four teachers. With outbreaks of illness even the medical services in Potchefstroom rendered help in the Gatsrand. Inhabitants had to travel to Potchefstroom, some of them covering great distances, if they were in need of medical facilities. Initially the nearest centre for worship was also in Potchefstroom. The first congregation in the Gatsrand was founded in 1926 at Fochville with boundaries which included the largest part of this area. Since 1937 gold mine development has provided definite advances in local development. Up to 1948 six towns had been proclaimed, congrega tions were formed, houses and roads were built to accommodate the gro wing number of inhabitants. This resulted in the establishment of numerous enterprises. The number of pupils increased and smaller schools had to amalgamate with larger schools. By 1948 it was apparant that the development in the Gatsrand would be phenomenal due to the rich discoveries of the then established gold mines.

Abstract:

Syftet med denna selektiva kunskapsöversikt var att belysa de faktorer som kan bidra till att äldre människor känner autonomi och möjlighet att själva påverka sina liv trots att de är i beroendeställning till andra för att klara sin allmänna dagliga levnad. Utifrån den valda forskningslitteraturen fokuserade vi oss på tre teman; formella och informella omsorgsgivares betydelse för autonomi, valmöjlighet/delaktighet samt livskvalitet. Kunskapsöversikten tolkades sedan hermenutiskt. Resultatet påvisade att både informella och formella omsorgsgivare har en stor betydelse för äldres upplevelse av autonomi, där integritet och självbestämmande var ledorden. Äldre människor upplever inte delaktighet i omsorgssituationer eller handläggningsprocessen. Resultatet påvisade att autonomin påverkas av fysisk hälsa samt upplevelse av att bli bekräftad och ha kontroll över sin egen livssituation, vilka kan ha en inverkan på den upplevda livskvaliteten. Avseende delaktighet och livskvalitet var hemmet en bidragande faktor till autonomi. Resultatet analyserades med hjälp av maktteori samt ålderism.
The aim of this literature overview was to map out the factors that can help older people feel autonomy even though they are dependent on others. Based on the selected research literature, we focused on three themes; the informal and formal caregivers importance, choice/participation and quality of life. The results have shown that booth informal and formal caregivers have a significant impact on older people´s experience of autonomy. Elderly people´s autonomy was also affected by physical health and the experience to be acknowledged and have control over their own lives. Both participation, quality of life and being able to remain in their home, was contributing factors to autonomy. Elderly people felt that they were not involved in decision making regarding how help should be organized. The results have been analyzed with the help of power theory and ageism.

Abstract:

Ziel der hier vorgelegten Untersuchung war es, die Bedeutung von S. aureus-Exotoxinen/Superantigenen als Pathogenitätsfaktor bei der AD zu analysieren, da kausalpathogenetisch ausgerichtete Experimentalansätze sowie systematische klinische Untersuchungen zu dieser Thematik bei Patienten mit AD ausstanden. In einer Querschnittsstudie war eine Assoziation zwischen dem Grad der S. aureus-Besiedlung und dem Schweregrad der AD nachzuweisen. Von 74 Kindern mit AD waren 60 (81%) mit S. aureus kolonisiert. S. aureus Exotoxin-sezernie-rende Stämme wurden bei 40 Patienten (53%) von der Haut isoliert. Am häufigsten wurden SEA- und SEC-sezernierende Stämme nachgewiesen, gefolgt von SEB, TSST-1 und SED. Der ausgeprägteste Schweregrad der AD wurde in der mit Exotoxin-sezernierenden S. aureus-kolonisierten Gruppe beobachtet. Für die Schwere der Erkrankung, gemessen am SCORAD-Score wurde eine Varianzaufklärung von 30% für die Exotoxine und 50% für die S. aureus-Infektion errechnet. In einer Subgruppe von Patienten wurde der Einfluß von S. aureus-Exotoxinen auf intradermale T-Zell-Rezeptor-Vß-Repertoir-Veränderungen untersucht. Bei den Patienten mit chronischer AD, die mit SEB-sezernierendem S. aureus besiedelt waren, war mittels immunhistologischer Untersuchung in der Haut nachzuweisen, dass zwischen 25% und 65% der intradermalen T-Zellen das zugehörige Superantigen-reaktive Vß-T-Zell-Repertoire gegenüber 5% bis 17% der T-Zellen im Blut exprimieren. Weder in der Haut noch im Blut war eine Akkumulation nicht-superantigenreaktiver T-Zell-Subpopulationen nachzuweisen. Auch fand sich keine selektive Akkumulation von Vß-T-Zell-Subpopulationen bei Kindern mit S. aureus-Kolonisierung ohne Exotoxinnachweis. Die Ergebnisse belegen, dass bei Kindern mit AD und positivem S. aureus-Exotoxinnachweis auf ekzematöser Haut ein Grossteil der dermal akkumulierten T-Zellen auf diese S. aureus-Exotoxine/Superantigene reagieren können und wesentlich an der Pathogenese der AD beteiligt sind. In einer Teilpopulation bei 58 Kindern mit AD wurden Prävalenz und Rolle von Serum-IgE-Antikörpern gegen die S. aureus-Exotoxine SEA und SEB untersucht. Bei 34% der Kinder mit AD (20/58) konnten wir spezifische IgE-Antikörper gegen SEA und/oder SEB nachweisen (45% zu SEB, 10% zu SEA und 45% zu SEA und SEB). Alle gegen SEA und SEB sensibilisierten Kindern waren mit S. aureus kolonisiert gegenüber 71% (27/38) der nicht-sensibilisierten Kinder. Der Grad der S. aureus-Besiedlung, die Prävalenz von SEB-sezernierendem S. aureus auf der Haut, sowie die Prävalenz von S. aureus-Hautinfektionen war in der sensibilisierten Gruppe höher. Die höchste Varianzaufklärung von 37% wurde zwischen dem Vorliegen von S. aureus-Hautinfektionen und dem Nachweis spezifischer SEA/SEB-IgE-Antikörper ermittelt; diese stellen somit einen Risikofaktor für eine Sensibilisierung gegen S. aureus-Exotoxine dar. Die SEA/SEB-sensibilisierte Gruppe zeigte einen höheren Schweregrad der AD, höhere Serum-Gesamt-Spiegel und eine polyvalente Sensibilisierung gegen Inhalations- und Nahrungsmittelallergene. Insgesamt belegen unsere klinischen, immunologischen und statistischen Ergebnisse, dass die S. aureus-Exotoxine einen wesentlichen Einfluss auf die Immunpathogenese der AD haben. Eine orale Therapie mit CyA kann bei S. aureus-kolonisierten Kindern die S. aureus-Besiedlungsdichte reduzieren. In der S. aureus-infizierten Gruppe war die Prävalenz von Exotoxin-produzierendem S. aureus und die Krankheitsaktivität höher, wobei eine Verminderung der Besiedlung nicht beobachtet wurde. Die Ergebnisse dieser Arbeit erlauben den Schluss, dass S. aureus-Exotoxine als Triggerfaktor die Exazerbation der AD im Kindesalter wesentlich unterstützen. Deswegen sollte in ein therapeutisches Konzept eine konsequente Prävention bzw. eine Behandlung von S. aureus-Infektionen einbezogen werden. Kinder mit bereits schwerer AD profitieren von einer immunmodulatorischen Therapie.
Background: The skin of patients suffering from atopic dermatitis (AD) exhibits a striking susceptibility to colonization with S. aureus. Some strains of S. aureus secrete exotoxins with T cell superantigen activity (toxigenic strains) and abnormal T cell functions are known to play a critical role in AD. Objective: The aim of this study was to determine the impact of exotoxin production by skin-colonizing S. aureus on disease severity and the presence of T-cell subsets in lesional skin. Furthermore, we investigated the effect of oral cyclosporin A in severe pediatric atopic dermatitis on disease severity and S. aureus colonization density. Methods: In a cross sectional study of 74 children with atopic dermatitis, the presence and density of toxigenic and non-toxigenic strains of S. aureus was correlated with disease severity. In a subgroup of patients the T cell receptor (TCR) Vß repertoire of peripheral blood and lesional T cells was investigated and correlated with individual superantigen activity of skin colonizing S. aureus. Furthermore, in a subgroup of patients, the presence of IgE antibodies to SEA and SEB was correlated with severity of the disease and the total and other unrelated allergen-specific IgE titers and density of colonization with S. aureus strains on atopic skin and episodes of superficial S. aureus skin infections. Eleven children with severe AD (SCORAD score > 50) were treated for eight weeks with 2.5 to 5 mg/kg CyA. In five children the skin was only colonized with S. aureus whereas the remaining six patients had clinically relevant skin infections with requirement for systemic antibiotic therapy. The isolates from the latter patients were sensitive for the selected antibiotics. Clinical and microbiological investigations were performed before and after CyA therapy. Results: 53% of children with AD were colonized with toxigenic strains of S. aureus producing SEC, SEA, TSST-1, SEB and SED in decreasing frequency. Children colonized with toxigenic S. aureus strains presented with higher disease severity as compared to the non-toxigenic and S. aureus negative groups. The influence of exotoxin production on the SCORAD score was determined as R2 = 0.3 (ie, 30% of the SCORAD score is explained by exotoxin production), whereas infection with S. aureus revealed R2 = 0.5. Patients colonized with toxigenic S. aureus exhibited shifts in the intradermal TCR Vß repertoire which correspond to the respective superantigen-responsive T cell subsets. In a subgroup of patients, twenty of 58 children (34%) were sensitized to superantigens (45% to SEB, 10% to SEA, 45% to SEA and SEB). In this group, severity of AD and levels of specific IgE to food and air allergens were higher. The degree of disease severity correlated to a higher extent with the presence of SEA/SEB-specific antibodies than with total serum IgE levels. Density of colonization with superantigen-secreting S. aureus strains was higher in the superantigen IgE-positive group. Sixty-three of these children experienced repeated episodes of superficial S aureus skin infections. The influence of S. aureus skin infection on the presence of SEA/SEB-specific antibodies was determined as R2 = 0.37 (ie, 37% of the the presence of SEA/SEB-specific antibodies is explained by S. aureus superficial skin infection). In the group of patients, who were treated with CyA, clinical signs and symptoms of AD improved in all patients (mean SCORAD score reduction from 74 to 29). However, disease severity was more supressed by CyA in the "colonized" patients compared with the patients with clinical S. aureus infections. Furthermore, there was a significant decrease in S. aureus density on atopic skin after CyA treatment in "colonized" patients but not in "infected" patients. The prevalence of exotoxin producing strains was higher in the "infected" group. Conclusion: The data demonstrate that S. aureus released exotoxins can modulate disease severity and dermal T cell infiltration. Patients, suffering from AD may take profit from both consequent prevention or treatment of S. aureus skin infection as well as immunmodulating approaches.

Abstract:

Wie hoch ist die Leistungsdichte, Energieeffizienz, Fahrdynamik oder der Fahrkomfort? Wie wirken unterschiedliche, physikalische Systeme zusammen und wie können die mechatronischen Zusammenhänge verständlich dargestellt werden? Solche und andere Fragestellungen tauchen im Entwicklungsprozess immer wieder auf und lassen sich nur schwer zufriedenstellend beantworten. Die Systemsimulation liefert da einen effizienten Ansatz, welcher es dem Entwicklungsingenieur ermöglicht bereits in der Konzeptphase virtuelle Prototypen zu erstellen. Mit diesen kann dann das physikalische Verhalten simuliert, analysiert und anschließend optimiert werden. Dadurch ergibt sich bereits in den frühen Phasen der Produktentwicklung die Möglichkeit, alle zukünftigen Entscheidungen auf einer validen Basis zu treffen. ESI ́s SimulationX liefert für diese Anwendungsfälle eine umfassende softwaretechnische Lösung. Besonders im Bereich der E- Mobility sowie ihrer Peripherie ermöglicht die Software mit seinen anwendungsspezifischen Modellbibliotheken eine ganzheitliche Betrachtung.

Abstract:

The thesis solves the design of the technology of manufacturing the furniture wheel holder from a sheet thickness of 11 321 with a thickness of 2 mm. On the basis of the variant cutting and bending solution, a production solution was chosen in a process proggressive die. As a blank, a sheet metal strip is selected from a 64.1 mm roll. After the technology evaluation, the distances of the openings from the edge of the part and the bend were adjusted and the technological calculations determined the necessary total forces, work and other parameters. On the basis of the previous calculations, the S 160 E eccentric press of Šmeral was chosen as the most suitable machine. The designed tool works in six steps and includes nine cutting and one bending section together with two viewers and one spring retainer. Economic recovery has shown profitable production of the given series where the total profit is CZK 999 310,61 and the reversal point occurs after production 58 382 pieces.

ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The Chronicles of Narnia by C.S. Lewis is internationally considered as one of the classics of children’s literature. The series consists of seven books, of which only the first four were translated into Afrikaans, namely Die Towenaar se Neef (The Magician’s Nephew), Die Leeu, die Heks en die Hangkas (The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe), Die Perd en sy Seun (The Horse and his Boy) and Prins Kaspian (Prince Caspian). According to the publisher, Human & Rousseau, they have no intention to translate the remainder of the series. The three books that have not been translated into Afrikaans are The Voyage of the Dawn Treader, The Silver Chair and The Last Battle. The main aim of this study is the practical translation of a selection of The Voyage of the Dawn Treader. The Functionalist approach of Vermeer and Nord, Toury and Chesterman’s translation norms from Descriptive Translation Studies, Venuti’s foreignisation and domestication and Klingberg’s cultural contex adaptation form the theoretical framework for both the discussion and analysis of the source text as well as the translation. The four types of translation problems as identified by Nord are used as the framework for the annotations of the translation. By doing a theoretically based translation, the connection between theory and practice is illustrated: the translator chooses a general approach and translation strategies and is consequently guided to make consistent translation choices on macro as well as micro levels.
AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: C.S. Lewis se Chronicles of Narnia beklee internasionaal ’n gevestigde plek in die kanon van kinder- en jeugliteratuur. Die reeks bestaan uit sewe boeke, waarvan slegs die eerste vier in Afrikaans vertaal is, naamlik Die Towenaar se Neef, Die Leeu, die Heks en die Hangkas, Die Perd en sy Seun en Prins Kaspian. Volgens die uitgewer, Human & Rousseau, word daar nie verdere vertalings van die reeks beoog nie. Die drie onvertaalde boeke in die reeks is The Voyage of the Dawn Treader, The Silver Chair en The Last Battle. Hierdie studie fokus hoofsaaklik op die praktiese vertaling van ’n gedeelte van The Voyage of the Dawn Treader. Vermeer en Nord se Funksionalisme, Toury en Chesterman se vertaalnorme uit Deskriptiewe Vertaalstudies, Venuti se vervreemding en domestikering en Klingberg se kulturele konteksaanpassing dien as teoretiese raamwerk vir sowel die bespreking en ontleding van die bronteks as die vertaling. Nord se vier tipes vertaalprobleme dien as raamwerk vir die annotasies tot die vertaling. Deur ’n teoreties gebaseerde vertaling te doen word geïllustreer hoe teorie en praktyk by mekaar aansluit: die vertaler kies ’n algemene benadering en vertaalstrategieë, en word sodoende begelei tot konsekwente vertaalbesluite op makro- en mikrovlak.
