Abstract:
The Air Power theories of today are often written from a superior air force perspective where the overall focus is on the offensive nature of Air Power. Very little is spoken about Air Power and its defensive role as well as the inferior states opportunities against superior opponents. A state that successfully has used Air Power through history is Israel. During both the Six Day War in 1967 and Yom Kippur in 1973, Israel faced superior opponents consisting of a coalition of Arab states, including Egypt, Syria, Jordan and Iraq. Despite Israel being the initially inferior state during both wars, they managed to gain initiative against the superior Arab states. This study will set the Air Power theories of Philip S Meilinger to a test through a validation process against two cases, the Six Day War in 1967 and Yom Kippur in 1973. The aim is to analyse the Israeli air force during these two wars. The main goal is to try to explain how inferior states can succeed against superior opponents through Air Power. The result of the study demonstrates that an inferior state has the opportunity to achieve success through Air Power against superior opponents. The analyses of Meilingers theories indicates that high readiness, early employment of forces, use of Air Powers psychological effect and timing constitutes successful factors in gaining initiative. An additional important factor for achieving success through these variables is highly relevant intelligence.

Abstract:
This work is an exhaustive study of William S. Burroughs' interest in cinema. Burroughs, in collaboration with Antony Balch, produced between 1961 and 1972 a series of experimental short films with radical editing and visual styles. These widely ignored films are an essential part of experimental cinema. Their study highlights the evolution of the author's political and aesthetic vision, close to those of Guy Debord or Gilles Deleuze. Burroughs also worked as an actor. The analysis of his cinematographic apparitions is linked to their relation to Burroughs' written work and its biographical aspects: the writer deconstructs the characters he plays in the same way as he deconstructs the mise-en-scène.A set of films, which can loosely be said to be adaptations, are another important part of the corpus of this study. These works, in a relation to the written word based on reproduction, shift or blow-out, produce original cinematographic images. This study is completed with a flash-forward to Burroughs' influence on three important north-american filmmakers: David Cronenberg, Gus Van Sant and David Lynch. These three authors reinvest Burroughs' work within the framework of their own production, focusing on the apparition of the voice, the link between visual signature and the notion of presence or the shattering of a conventional narrative.Linking experimentations, presences and contaminations of the writer in the cinematographic art, this thesis aims to rehabilitate this part of Burroughs' work

Abstract:
This dissertation analyzes events opposing Israelis and Palestinians in their conflict, in the eyes of the media. It provides a view that would not part the errors of the former from the mistakes of the latter, in a concept, which would set their conflict apart. The media, whether Israeli, Arab or international, creates two opposing legitimacies which shape the history of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Each camp claims the right to be right. In this race for information, when false information is issued, the evil done can never be undone. The press has always shown a passionate interest in the conflicts of the Middle-East. Since the signature of the Oslo agreement (1993), the press has demonstrated strong support for the effort to attain an Israeli-Palestinian peace. The failure of the Camp David Summit in July 2000 and the outbreak of the Intifada on September 29, 2000 promoted a new vision of “real-time” journalism, which favors shocking and spectacular images, very little verified. The press often acts imprudently in issuing false information

Its implementation plan, aligned with the coincidence between city block and urban geography, as well as its dimensional characteristics allows in it an appreciation of other forms of urban occupation, different from the usual land configuration for small lots. The construction of this building , between 1955 and 1962 at Avenida Paulista, corresponds to a metropolization period of S?o Paulo, changing the urban configuration of the commercial activities from the central area to Rua Augusta`s neighborhood, which leads to a new centralization in City. This research aims to study historical and cultural conditions of the development of its project, as well as the insertion of it in the abroad context of modern architecture, approaching both typology?s configuration and the new relationship between buildings and city, that appears with the territorial and demographic expansion of urban centers in the early twentieth century. The description and analysis of this building have considered two different parts: the initial design and the building already built. This approach intended to point out the transformations that occurred during the course of its construction, with the changes in the urban characteristics, the adjustments and differences between the purpose of the architect and the final building. The realization of this project under the existing circumstances and the current situation of Edif?cio Conjunto Nacional enable to demonstrate qualities of modern architecture built in this period and to open up a discussion of its relevance in response to the current constructions in the city.
A descri??o e an?lise do edif?cio compreendem dois momentos distintos: o projeto inicial e o edif?cio constru?do.

The purpose of this study was to translate and adapt the (W. I. S. C) to Moroccan pupils. Subjects: the W. I. S. C. Standardization sample included 200 children (100 boys and 100 girls) at each of the two age levels (10-11) and (15-16). The total sample contained 400 cases. Data: analysis showing percentages passing each item by chronological age revealed that (58%) of the items were in the interval of difficulty (between the difficulty index 30 and 70) which is usually considered the most favorable by test developers. Examination of the item discrimination measures led to the conclusion that most of the items function well for the sample. Four factors for the age of (10-11) and three factors for the age of (15-16) were extracted through the use of a principal-components analyses (is in diagonals) followed by Varimax rotation of factors with eigenvalues greater than 1. Results as defined by the "f" test of significance indicated that differences in mean performances between males and females was found to be statistically significant at the (. 05) level. Data assessing the difference in mean performances for the various socio-economic groups revealed statistically significant results at the (. 05) level as indicated by the "f" ratio. Split-half reability coefficients were calculated for the subtests at each age level. The coefficients obtained averaged between (. 65) and (. 81)

Abstract:
How did Paris become the capital of large format artworks on a historical subject ? What were the motivations of a small circle of artists to produce oversized paintings ? Bounded between the modern era and the Third Republic, this thesis tells the story of these cumbersome works that French museums are now interested in presenting in a careful scenography after having them restored. Introduced in the Parisian artistic home by Charles Le Brun, the practice of large size easel painting finds, through the execution of theatrical genre high-warp tapestry cartoons (paint on large canvas), and the philosophy of sensualism, the essential resources to renew the narrative of a story in painting. During the Age of Enlightenment, large size paintings became objects of spectacle and the stage set of the scene copies the frame of these oversized paintings. David’s use of large format is particularly representative of a period in which the linearity of history is thwarted by the gradual introduction of a new regime of historicity, the repercussions of which are significantly felt in the way a story is interpreted, but also in the way in which the public and the painter’s career are approached. During the 19th century, the gigantic easel paintings were still essential components of the public sphere now extended to museums, including that of Amiens, expressly built to accommodate them. Correlating to the exhibition artist’s strategies, the large movable painting is a stimulating and demanding device from which an artist can claim to embody the figure of the genius. In general, it makes it possible to consider new pictorial concepts, to elaborate new truths, to historicize events and many other things that the reader will discover during this study

In this work, we question the narrative construction of the life of a real person featured in the media in fiction, mediated from transm?dias products. We do a qualitative analysis of two fanfictions of the brazilian soccer player David Luiz, as well as the interviews applied to the authors responsible for those stories. Also called fanfic or simply fic are fictions linked to expansions of narrative universes created by fans involved in media convergence contexts (Jenkins, 2009; 2012). Published in full in the site Social Spirit, Di?rio de uma Iniciante em Copa do Mundo and its sequel, Di?rio de uma Iniciante em Champions League, build a fictional account of a journalist, Fernanda Moraes, who, because of her work of coverage the World Cup in 2014, she gets involve lovingly with David Luiz, it played in the competition. The stories spread through different virtual spaces of interaction, which points to the idea of work in progress of Busse and Hellekson (2006) about fanfics. Also, we realize that not only are the stories that expand, but the contact of the readers and player?s fans with the sports competitions to which the plots refer cited as transmedia products (COSTA, 2015). We found that it was not only the interest of fan by the player who led the writing of the fic, but by the very world of soccer, the fanfiction itself and the spaces of interaction with readers. The fanfics studied are understood as mediations between fiction and reality and lead us to approach the idea of mediatized personal narratives (ESCOSTEGUY, 2011) and problematize through them the consideration of Silverstone (1999) on media omnipresence in our everyday lives. Thus, we discuss the relationship between fanfic, culture fans, media and narratives.

Abstract:
Brisbane architect-designed houses of the 1960s embodied a final manifestation of the Modern Movement in the twentieth century. The Modern architectural language of these houses was tempered by geographical and social factors, including the sub-tropical climate, Queensland's traditional architecture and the particular decade in which they were designed. Characteristics of the sixties era which influenced the architecture included the economic climate, materials and technology, and the lifestyle of the people for whom the houses were designed. Eleven architects who designed sixties houses were interviewed for this study. These interviews provided a first-hand account of each architect's design motivation and of the character of the period. Four houses were examined for the Case Study and this chapter includes drawings, photographs and a statement by the architect about each house. The legacy of the era is discussed, in relation to the surviving houses from the Case Study, and in general about the body of work that is left. The houses from the sixties make up a significant body of work that is important in the development of the distinctively Queensland house and in the history of architecture in this state.

In the late 20th century several fundamental works on the subject of irony were published. The aim of the present study is not to propose a new definition of irony but to determine if there is a difference between the irony of women-writers and that of men-writers. Four contemporary novelists provide the corpus for this work: Julian Barnes and David Lodge on the one hand, and Muriel Spark and A. S. Byatt on the other hand. The six novels under consideration have been grouped in pairs on the ground of their stylistic and thematic similarities. Flaubert’s Parrot and Possession are both postmodern novels dealing with the topic of literary quest. The Finishing School and Nice Work are variations of the campus novel. Abstract:
This thesis focus on the UN-led peacekeeping mission in Mali (MINUSMA) and how the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) has undertaken this in its resolutions. The importance to study this subject and statebuilding efforts, such as MINUSMA, is due to that a failed statebuilding may result in potential international consequences. This is the case in Mali where terror- and criminal organizations now roam free in large parts of the country where these organizations may plan their operations, including international terror attacks. Therefore, this study will research how the UNSC has positioned itself regarding the potential explanations to the outcomes of statebuilding, the statebuilder´s dilemma, and dividing structures. To conduct the analysis of the resolutions, a qualitative document analysis has been conducted. For understanding the context in Mali and the aftermath of the resolutions, secondary data analysis has been used. The conclusions for this thesis are that the UNSC has taken a middle way in the context of the statebuilder´s dilemma and dividing structures, but that the UNSC also shows a great loyalty towards the Malian state and not vice versa as the dilemma debates. The objective is to shine a light on the UN peacekeeping missions in an attempt to influence how they are carried out since improvement is needed.

Smallcanyon, Corey. "Contested Space: Mormons, Navajos, and Hopis in the Colonization of Tuba City." BYU ScholarsArchive, 2010. https://scholarsarchive.byu.edu/etd/2557.

Full text
Abstract:
When Mormons arrived in northern Arizona among the Navajo and Hopi Indians in the late 1850s, Mormon-Indian relations were initially friendly. It was not too long, however, before trouble began in conflicts over water use and land rights. Federal agents would soon consider Mormons a threat to the peaceful Hopis because both the Navajo and Mormons were expanding their land claims. Indian agents relentlessly pleaded with Washington to establish a separate Indian reservation. They anticipated this reservation would satisfy all three parties, but its creation in 1882 only created more problems, climaxing in the 1892 death of Lot Smith at the hands of Atsidí, the local Navajo headman. Tensions continued to increase until federal agents intervened in 1900 and placed Tuba City under a Presidential Executive Order. The order withdrew Tuba City from white claims and resulted in the expulsion of the Mormons from Tuba City in 1903. My contribution is to show how the Navajo and Hopi Indians may have considered the coming of the Mormons as an invasion by a group of foreigners which led to the resulting contest between the trios for the limited natural resources of the northern Arizona desert. Tuba City/Moenkopi has a complicated history and its origins remain contested because it was claimed not only by Mormons, but also by the Navajos and Hopi. Previous historians have neglected the wealth of history that come from using Native American oral histories. This thesis will include the Native point of view but will also integrate it with Mormon and non-Mormon narratives. Doing so will provide another perspective on some of the following: the founding of Tuba City, the creation of the 1882 and 1900 Executive Orders for Navajo and Hopi reservation expansions, the death of the Mormon Lot Smith, and Native American-Mormon relations in the late 1800s in northern Arizona.

Full text
Abstract:
Between 1760 and 1833, English explorers systematically filled in the map of British North America. Many of those explorers worked for two fur-trading companies: the Hudsonâ s Bay Company and the North West Company. In pursuit of new sources of fur, they opened western Canada to European comprehension. Their published accounts of geographic exploration provided the British audience with new geographical information about North America. New geographic information often paved the way for settlement. However, in the case of the Canadian West, increased geographic comprehension did not necessarily lead to settlement. By 1833, the explorers had built a base of knowledge from which the British conceptualized the Canadian wilderness. Over the course of seventy years, the British conception of western Canada remained remarkably consistent. The popular British image of western Canada, persisting into the 1830s, was of a wasteland fit only for the fur trade. The British, who had been expanding around the world for several hundred years, were not yet interested in settlement in western Canada. This thesis seeks to expand upon the link that existed between the fur trade, its employees, and their influence on the British conception of western Canada.
Master of Arts

Whitaker, David S. "The Use of Evidence-Based Design in Hospital Renovation Projects." BYU ScholarsArchive, 2018. https://scholarsarchive.byu.edu/etd/6692.

Full text
Abstract:
Since the 1960s, researchers have been exploring how the design of the built environment impacts the health and well-being of occupants and users. By the 1980s, further research began to focus on healthcare facilities in particular and how design could influence patient healing and medical staff performance (Alfonsi, 2014). Evidence-Based Design (EBD) is "the process of basing decisions about the built environment on credible research to achieve the best possible outcomes" (CHD, 2016). The desired outcomes of Evidence-Based Design recommendations include improvements in the following: patient healing, patient experience and comfort, medical staff performance, and medical staff job satisfaction (CHD, 2017). Extensive research has been done on the subject of EBD; however, the question remains whether or not the latest research findings are being utilized by the design and construction industries in practice. The purpose of this research is to determine whether or not the latest scientific knowledge and research findings are being implemented into hospital renovation projects by the healthcare design and construction industries. A list of recommendations from existing EBD literature was compiled. Construction documents from 30 recent healthcare facility renovation projects across the United States were then obtained and analyzed. The findings indicate that EBD recommendations are being adopted in practice at consistently high levels. These findings also reveal that there are still areas of potential improvement which could inform those who influence or determine building and design codes, standards, and guidelines. The results are instructive to owners, designers, and contractors by providing a glimpse into how well the industry is recognizing and implementing known best practices. The findings likewise open up new opportunities for further research which could lead to additional improvement in the healthcare facilities of the future.

Abstract:
Ce mémoire de maîtrise propose une étude détaillée des répercussions sociales et psychologiques des évènements traumatiques sur le développement de l’enfant en utilisant trois Bildungsromane importants, The Catcher in the Rye de J.D. Salinger, The Outsiders de S.E. Hinton et The Perks of Being a Wallflower de Stephen Chbosky.
This thesis examines the psychological and social repercussions of trauma on a child’s maturation process using three landmark novels of the Bildungsroman genre, J.D. Salinger’s The Catcher in the Rye, S.E. Hinton’s The Outsiders, and Stephen Chbosky’s The Perks of Being a Wallflower. Grounding my analysis on the findings of trauma theorists Cathy Caruth, Shoshana Felman, Ronald Granofsky, and Dominick LaCapra, and psychiatrists Dori Laub and Judith Lewis Herman, I demonstrate that trauma can occupy two contradictory but inextricably linked functions in the maturation process, that of both hindering and catalyzing a child’s coming-of-age. I demonstrate that Holden Caulfield, Ponyboy Curtis, and Charlie all display behaviours that suggest the paralyzing nature of trauma and its initial ability to prevent the child from growing up. I then argue that trauma, or the acceptance of one’s traumatic past, has the potential to accelerate the maturation process. My study also highlights the importance of the testimonial process in the recovery from trauma and the character's ensuing maturity. Because of the omnipresence of testimony in young people’s literature, its ramifications and implications are explored in each chapter of this thesis. Through the use of close reading, I study each work independently, evaluate each character’s individual response to trauma, and establish the thematic vocabulary and the interlinks that allow a conversation between the three novels. Although the studied works propose different types of traumatic negotiation and response, each novel is dialogically linked with the other. This thesis offers new readings of each novel, while establishing insightful comparisons between the three works. The intent of this thesis is therefore to contribute to the assessment of each narrative and to a general understanding of the role of trauma in young people’s literature.

Heward, Maclane Elon. "The First Mission of the Twelve Apostles: 1835." BYU ScholarsArchive, 2013. https://scholarsarchive.byu.edu/etd/3478.

Full text
Abstract:
The Quorum of the Twelve Apostles for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is an administrative and ecclesiastical quorum. The Church, first organized in 1830, did not organize the Quorum of Twelve Apostles until 1835. When it was organized, Joseph Smith outlined the quorum's responsibilities through revelation. The Twelve were assigned two unique and specific responsibilities: to take the gospel to the nations of the earth and to form a traveling high council for the regulating of the Church outside of its stakes. The first opportunity for the Twelve to fulfill their responsibilities was in May 1835 when they were assigned to travel to the eastern United States and southern Canada. There they both preached the gospel and regulated the branches of the Church. This mission represents not only the first time the Apostles fulfilled their assigned responsibilities but the only time that they filled their responsibilities as an entire quorum. It is surprising that more secondary literature on this mission is not available. This thesis seeks to commence an academic conversation regarding this mission and its impact both on the quorum's development and on the Church in its outlying areas. Chapter 1 details the preparation of the individual members of the Twelve to fulfill this mission. It discusses the preparation of the Twelve prior to their call to the apostleship. It also discusses the training that took place between their call and the commencement of this mission. As an administrative body for the membership of the Church, the Twelve spent the majority of their time on this mission with the members of the Church. Chapter 2 identifies the unique purpose of the Twelve on this mission and how that purpose was fulfilled. Joseph Smith originally laid out the geographic framework for this mission, which sent the Twelve into Canada and throughout much of the northeastern United States. Chapter 3 identifies the locations of the Twelve based on available records and seeks to provide an answer to how the Twelve decided which areas to preach in. Many individuals were baptized during this five-month mission. Chapter 4 identifies what the Twelve taught and the sources that they used. It also discusses the reaction of the people they taught. The concluding chapter summarizes the thesis and identifies areas for further research.

Abstract:
In various fields, including literature, much work has been done on the question of space over the last few years and decades. Some refer to a “spatial turn” in humanities and social sciences. However, in spite of a considerable general interest in this topic, the notion of space remains equivocal. The term is commonly used to denote basic facts in geography, urbanism and astronomy, but the concept is also often said to be rather complex. Husserl claimed that space was both a “content” and a “form”, while Einstein believed that its genuine nature was at the same time “obscure” and “undeniably objective”. In this thesis, we take into account the complexity of the space itself and challenge the notion of spatiality in literature. The corpus consists of novels and narratives written by V.S. Naipaul, Martin Amis, Jean Echenoz, François Bon, Radoslav Petković and David Albahari. Spatiality, such as defined here, brings us to examine both content- and form-related issues, including urban and non-urban space, spatial “polarization” (“centers” and “peripheries”, “local” and “global”, “known” and “unknown” places), border, toponymy and topography. The use of some terms specifying spatial location (such as deictics) is also analyzed, as well as the iconographic representations of space referred to in the texts and, finally, different forms of self-reflexive discourse inherent in the writing of space. The analysis reveals that every level of spatiality has an essentially dynamic, non-static quality, as the elements that it is composed of are in constant opposition and interaction

Peck, Mikaere Michelle S. "Summerhill school is it possible in Aotearoa ??????? New Zealand ???????: Challenging the neo-liberal ideologies in our hegemonic schooling system." The University of Waikato, 2009. http://hdl.handle.net/10289/2794.

Abstract:
The original purpose of this thesis is to explore the possibility of setting up a school in Aotearoa (New Zealand) that operates according to the principles and philosophies of Summerhill School in Suffolk, England. An examination of Summerhill School is therefore the purpose of this study, particularly because of its commitment to self-regulation and direct democracy for children. My argument within this study is that Summerhill presents precisely the type of model Māori as Tangata Whenua (Indigenous people of Aotearoa) need in our design of an alternative schooling programme, given that self-regulation and direct democracy are traits conducive to achieving Tino Rangitiratanga (Self-government, autonomy and control). In claiming this however, not only would Tangata Whenua benefit from this model of schooling; indeed it has the potential to serve the purpose of all people regardless of age race or gender. At present, no school in Aotearoa has replicated Summerhill's principles and philosophies in their entirety. Given the constraints of a Master's thesis, this piece of work is therefore only intended as a theoretical background study for a much larger kaupapa (purpose). It is my intention to produce a further and more comprehensive study in the future using Summerhill as a vehicle to initiate a model school in Aotearoa that is completely antithetical to the dominant neo-liberal philosophy of our age. To this end, my study intends to demonstrate how neo-liberal schooling is universally dictated by global money market trends, and how it is an ideology fueled by the indifferent acceptance of the general population. In other words, neo-liberal theory is a theory of capitalist colonisation. In order to address the long term vision, this project will be comprised of two major components. The first will be a study of the principal philosophies that govern Summerhill School. As I will argue, Summerhill creates an environment that is uniquely successful and fulfilling for the children who attend. At the same time, it will also be shown how it is a philosophy that is entirely contrary to a neo-liberal 3 mindset; an antidote, to a certain extent, to the ills of contemporary schooling. The second component will address the historical movement of schooling in Aotearoa since the Labour Party's landslide victory in 1984, and how the New Zealand Curriculum has been affected by these changes. I intend to trace the importation of neo-liberal methodologies into Aotearoa such as the 'Picot Taskforce,' 'Tomorrows Schools' and 'Bulk Funding,' to name but a few. The neo-liberal ideologies that have swept through this country in the last two decades have relentlessly metamorphosised departments into businesses and forced ministries into the marketplace, hence causing the 'ideological reduction of education' and confining it to the parameters of schooling. The purpose of this research project is to act as a catalyst for the ultimate materialization of an original vision; the implementation of a school like Summerhill in Aotearoa. A study of the neo-liberal ideologies that currently dominate this country is imperative in order to understand the current schooling situation in Aotearoa and create an informed comparison between the 'learning for freedom' style of Summerhill and the 'learning to earn' style of our status quo schools. It is my hope to strengthen the argument in favour of Summerhill philosophy by offering an understanding of the difference between the two completely opposing methods of learning.

Abstract:
100
The context of Michael Cunningham's The Hours (1998), Stephen Daldry's film adaption The Hours (2002) and its screenplay by David Hare illustrate the characters'contemplation on life and death within a condition of becoming toward future. The aim of this thesis is to traverse one's time and memory in the Deleuzian sense and to elaborate the theme of three women's fluid identity which is vacillating between the past and the present using Gillies Deleuze's post-structuralist approach in the realm of philosophical and postmodern thought, involving with ideas from feminist studies. Haunted by Virginia Woolf's novel Mrs. Dalloway (1925), three female characters in The Hours are loosely connected to each other in different time and space. Starting from Virginia Woolf's wandering thinking toward her life and her novel, the fixed image of Mrs. Dalloway and Woolf's nomadic thought gradually provides multiple life potentiality within three women's lives. Under a strong feeling of displacement, three women desperately want to free themselves from gloomy daily life. Owing to the flux of fluid self, they struggle between life and death, freewill and responsibility, fragmentary memory and recollection infusing with emotion. Through this dynamic flow of consciousness, three women in The Hours revive and redefine themselves out of the unbounded desire and nature within a process of becoming. As a consequence, the dynamics of becoming induces a renewed sense in three women's ordinary life. The application of Deleuze's notion of becoming would correspond to main characters’variable decision of choosing life or death. Furthermore, Deleuze's insistence on becoming-woman is possible for solving the complex problem of character's flowing condition of gender identity between heterosexuality and homosexuality. Besides, encompassing Deleuze's theoretical concept of memory and time as a background, we would perceive that a creative sense of everyday life lies in the resurrection of the three involuntary hostesses.
