Abstract:
All-solid-state lithium metal batteries (ASSLiMBs) are one of the candidates for a next-generation automotive battery. In particular, oxide-based SEs have relatively high electrochemical stability against lithium metal. Thus, ASSLiMB with oxide SE is expected to be long life and high energy density battery. Poor contact between the lithium metal and oxide SE is an issue to realize ASSLiMB with oxide SE. This poor contact causes high overvoltage at the SE-Li interface, and lithium dendrite grows into the SE, and it reaches to the cathode, then causing a short circuit at high-speed charging that exceeds critical current density (CCD). Several methods (e.g., thin-film insertion method, interface structure modification methods) are proposed to suppress the interface resistance and enhance the CCD; however, more low interface resistance and high CCD is required to achieve high-speed charging by ASSLiMB with oxide SE. In this study, we propose a thin surface structure control method by shot peening (S.P.) to suppress the interface resistance and increase the CCD of ASSLiMB with oxide SE. S.P. is a surface treatment method by blowing abrasive grains with high-pressure air. S.P. has the effect of imparting an uneven surface and compressive residual stresses to the surface. The uneven shape is expected to increase the interfacial stress and improve the contact property as the SE bites into the Li. The compressive residual stresses suppress crack initiation on the SE surface. It has been reported that Li dendrites grow with cracks, and suppression of cracks is expected to improve CCD . The S.P. has above two effects that can improve the lithium metal anode performance, so, we investigated the influence of the S.P. on the lithium metal anode performance. We also investigated the influence of the grain size on the electrode performance because the size of the surface roughness and the compressive residual stresses can be changed by the change of the grain size used in S.P. Pellets of oxide SE (Li6.25Ga0.25La3Zr2O12) synthesized by the solid phase reaction method were processed by S.P. with abrasive grain of Al2O3 powder. After the S.P., the surface of the pellet is coated with gold by gold sputtering. Three experiments with three abrasive gain sizes (50 µm,100 µm,300 µm) and the SE without S.P. were carried out to check the influence of the S.P.. Li metal was attached to both sides of the SE layer to construct a symmetric cell, and CCD measurements and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy measurements were performed. Surface characteristics were measured by surface three-dimensional scanning electron microscopy (surface 3DSEM) and indentation. Fig. 1 shows the CCD and interfaces resistance without S.P. and S.P. using each abrasive grain. As shown in the figure, higher CCD and low interface resistance are achieved for the samples with S.P. with 50 µm, and 100 µm grain size than non S.P. processed samples. On the other hand, the CCD of S.P. with 300 µm grain is almost the same as the non S.P. processed samples and the interface resistance is high. These results indicate that the S.P. can improve electrode performance, and there is an optimum S.P. grain size. From indentation, the fracture toughness of S.P. processed samples were higher than a sample without S.P., and the fracture toughness increased with increasing in grain diameter. This increase in fracture toughness may have suppressed the growth of Li dendrites into the SE, leading to an increase in CCD. The surface 3DSEM showed that the S.P. creates an uneven pattern on the SE pellet and the structure size is several µm. The structure size increases with the increase in the abrasive grain size. This unevenness improves the contact between SE and Li and suppresses the interface resistance. This interface resistance suppression depends on the structure size, and the lowest interface resistance is achieved for the S.P. with the smallest grain size of 50 µm. As a result of the balance between high compressive residual stress by small size grain and the low interface resistance by large size grain, the highest CCD is obtained by middle size grain of 100 µm. This study shows that S.P. can decrease the interfacial resistance of ASSLiMB and improve CCD. The unevenness caused by S.P. is on the order of several micrometers, and it can be said that S.P. can be applied to separators thinner than 100 micrometers. Figure 1

Abstract:
PVC is one of the most widely used plastics today and the one that produces the most waste. In recent years, microorganisms capable of degrading it have been reported, most of which come from environments in which PVC is accumulated. The aim of this work was to study the degradation of PVC without plasticizer, from fungi isolated from a soil sample contaminated with PVC resin. The fungi were isolated and morphologically characterized, 30 morphospecies were obtained, 8 were chosen to undergo preliminary tests in a medium whose only carbon source was a PVC film. Growth curves of the two isolates with better results were made and their molecular identification showed that they corresponded to Penicillium sp. and Mucor sp., the latter gained biomass from PVC and in both cases, the films showed visible changes, which were supported by infrared spectra. Although the results shown in this article are preliminary, they open the door to new forms of PVC waste degradation that are very persistent.

Abstract:
Evaluation of shell effects in nuclei plays an important role in studying the nuclear structure. In the Strutinsky method the smooth energy of the nucleus is obtained by a folding procedure of the single-particle (s.p.) energy density in the s.p. energy space e. An alternative way of energy smoothing is obtained by folding the s.p. energy sum in the particle-number space [Formula: see text]. For non degenerated s.p. spectra both types of folding yield smooth energies which are close to each other. In the case of strongly degenerated spectra which appear at sphericity or in regions of shape isomers, the smooth energy obtained by the [Formula: see text]-folding is a couple of MeV larger than the traditional average Strutinsky energy. It is shown that this smooth energy difference can serve as a simple tool to search for magic or quasi-magic structures in the s.p. spectra, e.g. to find shape isomers in the multidimensional deformation space.

Abstract:
Microalgae contain a diversity of functional groups that can be used as environmental adsorbents. Spirulina platensis is a blue-green microalga that comprises protein-N, which is advantageous for use in nitrogen-containing biomass as adsorbents. This study aimed to enhance the adsorption properties of alginate hydrogels by employing Spirulina platensis. Spirulina platensis was immobilized on sodium alginate (S.P@Ca-SA) via crosslinking. The results of field-emission scanning electron microscopy, Fourier-transform infrared, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analyses of the N-containing functional groups indicated that Spirulina platensis was successfully immobilized on the alginate matrix. We evaluated the effects of pH, concentration, and contact time on Pb(II) adsorption by S.P@Ca-SA. The results demonstrated that S.P@Ca-SA could effectively eliminate Pb(II) at pH 5, reaching equilibrium within 6 h, and the maximum Pb(II) sorption capacity of S.P@Ca-SA was 87.9 mg/g. Our results indicated that S.P@Ca-SA fits well with the pseudo-second-order and Freundlich models. Compared with Spirulina platensis and blank alginate beads, S.P@Ca-SA exhibited an enhanced Pb(II) adsorption efficiency. The correlation implies that the amino groups act as adsorption sites facilitating the elimination of Pb(II).

Abstract:
The study investigated how an extract of Sporidiobolus pararoseus (S.p.) affects lipid metabolism in Kunming mice that were obese as a result of being fed a high-fat diet; the control group were administered Max EPA fish oil. Ten mice were randomly selected from a pool of 60 mice for the control group and the remaining 50 mice were fed with a high-fat diet to establish a dyslipidemia model. After 4 weeks, these 50 mice were randomly distributed among 5 groups: high-fat model group; Max EPA group; and 3 groups of mice fed different doses of S.p. extract (low dose, medium dose, and high dose). After 8 weeks, the mice were sacrificed and the relevant parameters were measured. Compared with the high-fat model group, the group administered the high dose of S.p. extract showed significantly decreased body mass and serum levels of total cholesterol, triglycerides, and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, and increased levels of high-density lipoprotein cholesterol. The results from RT-PCR showed that the mRNA expression of sterol regulatory element-binding protein 1c, fatty acid synthesis enzyme, and acetyl-CoA carboxylase was lower in the groups supplemented with S.p. extract than in the high-fat model group, whereas the expression of carnitine palmitoyltransferase 1 was higher in the group supplemented with S.p. extract than in the high-fat model group. Our results suggest that taking S.p. extract could benefit patients with dyslipidemia. Therefore, S.p. extract should be developed as a dietary supplement to improve lipid metabolism in obese people.

Abstract:
The intention of this study was to investigate how organisational change was implemented at S.P. Metal Forgings Uitenhage, what the outcomes of the changes were and the effect on the organisational culture. In order to achieve this goal, the following actions were taken: · A literature study was conducted of various texts relating to organizational change and the associated topics with the intention to identify strategies and techniques to aid the successful implementation of organisational change. · An interview was held with the managing director of S.P. Metal Forgings to aid in understanding the need for organisational change at this particular facility and to have insight into how he implemented the changes. · A self administered questionnaire was distributed amongst a number of employees. The survey covered all levels of the organisation, from machine operators to departmental managers, to provide a comprehensive picture of how the employees viewed the changes and associated topics. The questionnaire requested responses from the respondents regarding their demographical details and their individual opinions regarding the organisational change, which covered the lead up to the changes and the manner in which the changes were made. The questionnaire also included sections covering change outcomes, which measured the success of the change efforts and lastly organisational culture on site at the time of the study. The results from the literature study showed that there are a number of accepted change models which can be adopted when implementing change. These models assist in driving the organisational change. The empirical study revealed that for the changes implemented at S.P. Metal Forgings Uitenhage, a change model was not adopted and that a number of vitally important areas associated with the change efforts were inadequately addressed. The organisational changes were introduced on this particular site with the intention of minimizing the loss situation and re-establishing the organisation as a profit generating entity. The empirical study showed a number of positive outcomes associated with the changes but also highlighted areas of concern and points which can be improved. The culture found within an organisation influences the organisation in many ways which include the ability of the organisation to accept change and the ease of implementing new procedures and equipment. The culture also influences the daily operations of a manufacturing facility such as this one. The study revealed that the respondents are not driven to perform at their best as a result of the lack of recognition which they receive and that the relationship between employees and management can improve. It was concluded that organisational change is not easy to introduce and that it needs to be well planned and executed. Change requires transformational leaders, a clear vision, an analysis and well-thought out and properly implemented actions.

Abstract:
The mathematical model of the contact interaction of two nanobeams obeying the kinematic hypothesis of the second approximation S.P. Timoshenko is constructed. There is a small gap between the nanobeams; an external alternating transverse load acts on the upper nanobeam. Nanobeams are isotropic, elastic, and they are connected through boundary conditions. Modified couple stress theory has been applied to describe the size-dependent effects of a beam nanostructure. Contact interaction is accounted for by the model B.Ya. Cantor. The paper studies the effect of the size-dependent coefficient. The system of differential equations is reduced to the Cauchy problem by the finite-difference method with an approximation of 0(h2) in the spatial coordinate. Further, the solution was carried out by the Runge-Kutta methods of the 4th order of accuracy in time. The convergence of numerical methods is investigated. The visualization of the results obtained by the methods of nonlinear dynamics and using wavelet transforms.

Abstract:
Различий в трактовках, тем не менее, много. the presentation analyzes the concept of the revolution of 1917, presented in school textbooks recommended for teaching in Russian schools in the list of 2020/2021. This includes textbooks edited by A.V. Torkunov, also authored by N.V. Zagladin, Yu.V. Petrov, A.N. Sakharov, also edited by V.A. Tishkov, also edited by S.P. Karpov, also co-authored by O.V. Volobuev, S.P. Karpachev, and P.N. Romanov. The speech reveals the common features of the concept of the revolution of 1917 in Russia, as well as reveals the differences in the presentation of the causes, course, meaning and consequences of the events. The events of 1917 in Russia are not reflected in any school textbook as a natural and inevitable process of transition from the capitalist formation to the communist one, as it was in the Soviet textbooks. What is common in the presentation of revolutionary events is that, in contrast to the Soviet era, where in textbooks the liberal-bourgeois February was opposed to the socialist October, in modern textbooks the events of February – October 1917 is presented as a single process, as the Great Russian Revolution. Nevertheless, there are many differences in the interpretations.

Breiman, Adina, Jan Dvorak, Abraham Korol, and Eduard Akhunov. Population Genomics and Association Mapping of Disease Resistance Genes in Israeli Populations of Wild Relatives of Wheat, Triticum dicoccoides and Aegilops speltoides. United States Department of Agriculture, December 2011. http://dx.doi.org/10.32747/2011.7697121.bard.

Full text
Abstract:
Wheat is the most widely grown crop on earth, together with rice it is second to maize in total global tonnage. One of the emerging threats to wheat is stripe (yellow) rust, especially in North Africa, West and Central Asia and North America. The most efficient way to control plant diseases is to introduce disease resistant genes. However, the pathogens can overcome rapidly the effectiveness of these genes when they are wildly used. Therefore, there is a constant need to find new resistance genes to replace the non-effective genes. The resistance gene pool in the cultivated wheat is depleted and there is a need to find new genes in the wild relative of wheat. Wild emmer (Triticum dicoccoides) the progenitor of the cultivated wheat can serve as valuable gene pool for breeding for disease resistance. Transferring of novel genes into elite cultivars is highly facilitated by the availability of information of their chromosomal location. Therefore, our goals in this study was to find stripe rust resistant and susceptible genotypes in Israeli T. dicoccoides population, genotype them using state of the art genotyping methods and to find association between genetic markers and stripe rust resistance. We have screened 129 accessions from our collection of wild emmer wheat for resistance to three isolates of stripe rust. About 30% of the accessions were resistant to one or more isolates, 50% susceptible, and the rest displayed intermediate response. The accessions were genotyped with Illumina'sInfinium assay which consists of 9K single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) markers. About 13% (1179) of the SNPs were polymorphic in the wild emmer population. Cluster analysis based on SNP diversity has shown that there are two main groups in the wild population. A big cluster probably belongs to the Horanum ssp. and a small cluster of the Judaicum ssp. In order to avoid population structure bias, the Judaicum spp. was removed from the association analysis. In the remaining group of genotypes, linkage disequilibrium (LD) measured along the chromosomes decayed rapidly within one centimorgan. This is the first time when such analysis is conducted on a genome wide level in wild emmer. Such a rapid decay in LD level, quite unexpected for a selfer, was not observed in cultivated wheat collection. It indicates that wild emmer populations are highly suitable for association studies yielding a better resolution than association studies in cultivated wheat or genetic mapping in bi-parental populations. Significant association was found between an SNP marker located in the distal region of chromosome arm 1BL and resistance to one of the isolates. This region is not known in the literature to bear a stripe rust resistance gene. Therefore, there may be a new stripe rust resistance gene in this locus. With the current fast increase of wheat genome sequence data, genome wide association analysis becomes a feasible task and efficient strategy for searching novel genes in wild emmer wheat. In this study, we have shown that the wild emmer gene pool is a valuable source for new stripe rust resistance genes that can protect the cultivated wheat.

Aly, Radi, James H. Westwood, and Carole L. Cramer. Novel Approach to Parasitic Weed Control Based on Inducible Expression of Cecropin in Transgenic Plants. United States Department of Agriculture, May 2003. http://dx.doi.org/10.32747/2003.7586467.bard.

Full text
Abstract:
Our overall goal was to engineer crop plants with enhanced resistance to Orobanche (broomrape) based on the inducible expression of sarcotoxin-like peptide (SLP). A secondary objective was to localize small proteins such as SLP in the host-parasite union in order to begin characterizing the mechanism of SLP toxicity to Orobanche. We have successfully accomplished both of these objectives and have demonstrated that transgenic tobacco plants expressing SLP under control of the HMG2 promoter show enhanced resistance to O. aegyptiaca and O. ramosa . Furthermore, we have shown that proteins much larger than the SLP move into Orobanche tubercles from the host root via either symplastic or apoplastic routes. This project was initiated with the finding that enhanced resistance to Orobanche could be conferred on tobacco, potato, and tomato by expression of SLP (Sarcotoxin IA is a 40-residue peptide produced as an antibiotic by the flesh fly, Sarcophaga peregrina ) under the control of a low-level, root-specific promoter. To improve the level of resistance, we linked the SLP gene to the promoter from HMG2, which is strongly inducible by Orobanche as it parasitizes the host. The resulting transgenic plants express SLP and show increased resistance to Orobanche. Resistance in this case is manifested by increased growth and yield of the host in the presence of the parasite as compared to non-transgenic plants, and decreased parasite growth. The mechanism of resistance appears to operate post-attachment as the parasite tubercles attached to the transgenic root plants turned necrotic and failed to develop normally. Studies examining the movement of GFP (approximately 6X the size of SLP) produced in tobacco roots showed accumulation of green fluorescence in tubercles growing on transformed plants but not in those growing on wild-type plants. This accumulation occurs regardless of whether the GFP is targeted to the cytoplasm (translocated symplastically) or the apoplastic space (translocated in xylem). Plants expressing SLP appear normal as compared to non-transgenic plants in the absence of Orobanche, so there is no obvious unintended impact on the host plant from SLP expression. This project required the creation of several gene constructs and generation of many transformed plant lines in order to address the research questions. The specific objectives of the project were to: 1. Make gene constructs fusing Orobanche-inducible promoter sequences to either the sarcotoxin-like peptide (SLP) gene or the GFP reporter gene. 2. Create transgenic plants containing gene constructs. 3. Characterize patterns of transgene expression and host-to-parasite movement of gene products in tobacco ( Nicotiana tabacum L.) and Arabidopsis thaliana (L.). 4. Characterize response of transgenic potato ( Solanum tuberosum L.) and tomato ( Lycopersicon esculentum Mill .) to Orobanche in lab, greenhouse, and field. Objectives 1 and 2 were largely accomplished during the first year during Dr. Aly's sabbatical visit to Virginia Tech. Transforming and analyzing plants with all the constructs has taken longer than expected, so efforts have concentrated on the most important constructs. Work on objective 4 has been delayed pending the final results of analysis on tobacco and Arabidopsis transgenic plants. The implications of this work are profound, because the Orobanche spp. is an extremely destructive weed that is not controlled effectively by traditional cultural or herbicidal weed control strategies. This is the first example of engineering resistance to parasitic weeds and represents a unique mode of action for selective control of these weeds. This research highlights the possibility of using this technique for resistance to other parasitic species and demonstrates the feasibility of developing other novel strategies for engineering resistance to parasitic weeds.

Full text
Abstract:
Two commercial superabsorbent polymer (SAP) formulations were used to internally cure cement pastes, mortars, and concretes with a range of water-to-cement ratios (w/c 0.35–0.52). The following properties were determined as a function of cement chemistry and type, use of chemical admixtures, use of slag, and batching parameters: SAP absorption capacity, fresh mixture workability and consistency, degree of hydration, volumetric stability, cracking tendency, compressive and flexural strength, and pumpability. SAP internal curing agents resulted in cementitious mixtures with improved hydration, accelerated strength gain, greater volumetric stability, and improved cracking resistance while maintaining sufficient workability to be pumped and placed without sacrificing compressive or flexural strength. When using SAP, batching adjustments prioritized the use of water reducing admixture instead of extra water to tune workability. While the benefits of SAP internal curing agents for low w/c mixtures were expected, SAP-containing mixtures with w/c ≥ 0.42 displayed accelerated strength development and decreased cracking tendency.

Abstract:
The SUP Action Agenda provides the perspective of city and business leaders in response to the three volumes of the Summary for Urban Policymakers (SUP) of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change’s Sixth Assessment Report (IPCC AR6). The Action Agenda explicitly focuses on the policy and solution space, outlining both the opportunities for, and business investments required, to incentivize engagement from all relevant stakeholder communities for co-created solutions to the climate change crisis. While grounded in the scientific understanding of the climate crisis, the Action Agenda goes beyond the SUP Series and the foundational IPCC reports to include inputs from city and business leaders. Distinct from the official SUP Series, which is authored by the scientific community with input from practitioners, the Action Agenda is written from the perspective of city and business leaders and organizations that represent them.
