Full textThe work presented in this thesis aims to improve the understanding of the physical phenomena induced by a broaching operation. The end goal is the development a robust method for designing tungsten carbide broaches. For this purpose, a state of the art detailing the technological practices as well as the scientific analyses of this process is realized. An elementary study of the Udimet 720 cut is carried out with experimental conditions varied over a wide range in order to define their influence on the evolution of the machining stresses, the wear of the tool and the quality of the material produced. A design methodology adapted to the broaching of fir tree slots by tungsten carbide broaches is developed. Based on empirical models derived from experimental campaigns and an internal software, this machining can be simulated. The exploitation of the results makes it possible to estimate the lifetime of the broaches, to verify its dimensioning and to calculate its profitability. The new method is carried out on two industrial cases: the first close to the production constraints and the second unbridled in order to express the maximum potential of this technology. In the end, the achievable gains on the cost per piece by developing the broaching with tungsten carbide tools are estimated between 60 and 80 %

Full textThe purpose of this organic inquiry and alchemical hermeneutic study was to explore the nature, essence, and archetype of the other woman with the goal of understanding how and why women become involved in triadic relationships. The study seeks to comprehend the lived experience of the other woman, including her history, character, behavior, ideologies, and desires. This study explored how and why other women are othered (i.e., cast out or rejected) in society, and the resultant effects upon them. A further goal of the work was to understand the dynamics of the triadic relationship from the other woman's point of view and to find ways to ease the pain experienced by all parties involved in and affected by these often complex and problematic relationships, which can lead to severe suffering, alienation, heartbreak, and in extreme cases, even murder or suicide.
Although she has been with us for eons, the other woman's true identity has been all but erased from existence. She has been buried in the shadows of society's taboos, relegated to the role of the scapegoat, and burdened with carrying negative projections of an ill-begotten stereotype. Using Carl Jung's theories of the archetypes and complexes and James Hillman and Pat Berry's archetypal psychology, the researcher explored and contrasted the lived experiences of the other woman stereotype and the other woman archetype portrayed in film over the last hundred years, as well as women in history, including pioneering feminist, Anaïs Nin, and the mother of depth psychology, Sabina Spielrein. The other woman archetype proved to be elusive because her identity has been mostly usurped by negative stereotypes. Further, the problems resulting from othering the other woman do not rest in the dyad or in the triadic relationship, but originate with the problem of the imbalance of masculine and feminine energy on the planet.
The researcher concludes with the hope that the other woman can be re-visioned as just "another woman," on an individuation journey towards the Whole Woman archetype. Keywords: Affairs, Betrayal, Feminism, Film, Individuation, Infidelity, Othering, Whole Woman Archetype

Full textAn increasing trend of forest decline is observed and is likely to increase in the current context of climate change. Remote sensing can provide innovative methods for the forest ecosystems status assessment. This thesis aims at proposing, validating and interpreting activity measurements of some Southern Massif Central and Pyrenees mountains coniferous stands. The first objective is, using of time series of medium spatial resolution (MODIS-NDVI) images, to identify methods to measure decreases of activity, and to verify if they correspond to vitality decreases in stands in which has been observed forest decline. Change detection of activity, which can be considered as disturbances, is based on two approaches: the first allows to measure differences or trends of phenology surface parameters, and the second uses a method based on the time series decomposition. Changes that occur during the 2000-2011 times-period were measured. The detection of high magnitude negative breakpoints in NDVI time series from 2003 to 2011 confirms the influence of the 2003 summer drought, which both led to decreases in activity related to trees heath status and also to clear-cuts during the following years. Before the validation process, a clear-cut detection method was proposed in order to eliminate these situations in the study areas. A validation procedure was implemented on Pyrenean fir stands. For this step, two approaches were implemented: (1) the use of spatially extensive state stands proxies, through cuts inventory inventories during the 2000-2012 times-period and a 2001 forest decline map, and (2) the use of data from direct tree heath’s observations in the fir stands of Pays de Sault region (Eastern Pyrenees) using a diagnostic method based on the observation of tree architecture (ARCHI method). For this second approach, an appropriate sampling was assessed to deal with the MODIS pixels scale (Lambert et al. 2013). Relationships have been identified, allowing to validate the used methods, but also to highlight theirs interpretation’s limits. Finally, to provide an interpretation of the observed phenomena, the remote sensing activity variations were compared to climatic and soil spatial data which are adapted to the study of forest environments. The results show that vitality declines in Pays de Sault fir stands are significantly correlated with climatic factors, temperature and to a lesser degree to precipitations. In the Central Pyrenees, where the causal factors appear to be numerous, the influence of water and soil drought conditions has not been demonstrated

Full textThis work follows several studies conducted in the “Laboratoire de Chimie des Substances Naturelles” about bioremediation of trace elements, and aims to use Douglas fir bark to remove arsenic and cesium from water. Tests carried out in batch allowed the establishment of adsorption isotherms. Their interpretation following Langmuir adsorption model showed that crude Douglas fir bark has good intrinsic properties for biosorption of studied elements. In order to improve these properties for cesium sorption, bark was oxidised to form carboxylic acid functional groups and/or impregnated with nickel hexacyanoferrate. So as to increase As(V) biosorption, ammonium functional groups were incorporated in the bark structure by grafting of betaine and methylated polyethyleneimine. In parallel, thiol functional groups were introduced through the fixation of lipoic acid and N-acetylhomocysteine thiolactone, in order to enhance As(III) sorption. Chemical modifications carried out for cesium and As(III) biosorption led to keep the bark affinity for these elements while increasing significantly their adsorption capacity. Finally, the biosorption properties of cesium onto Biosorb, a bark-based biosorbant developed and marketed by Pe@rl society, were confirmed, including in fixed-bed column. Data collected during these experiments are consistent with those from OPTIPUR simulation software, making possible the process industrialisation

Full textCurrent climate change (CC), really fast, will impose species to change their history life traits or their distribution range. Trees may not be able to adapt because of their long reproductive cycles hence their potentialities of migration is decisive. Past tree migration rates, during Holocene, were revised in downward these rates (several decameters against several hundred m/year). In this context, and focusing on silver fir (Abies alba Mill.) as “model species”, we studied main factors decisive for migration potentialities. Using regeneration plots, installed on Mont Ventoux north face, silver fir dispersal and seedling recruitment have been studied, including seed sources and main environmental characteristics. Dispersal was also estimated using genetic data. For both cases, dispersal distances are of the order of decameters. This species shows a mixed mating system, and auto-fertilization rate, plus reproduction between half-sibs, induces homozygosity excess, generally observed in regeneration, this excess decreases probably under the purge of inbred individuals. Our results show that seedlings do not have show homozygosity excess, however inbred seedlings die preferentially. Lastly, we constructed a model of forest dynamics that includes processes that determine migration, in order to evaluate the concordance between long life cycle species and CC. Our results show that silver fir does not migrate as fast as climate warming velocity

Full textIn Quebec, 49° north latitude represents the border between, on the one hand, the mixed forest dominated by balsam fir and birch and the other by the boreal forest dominated by black spruce. This border tends to migrate north with the migration of the fir. In the clay plains of Abitibi-Témiscamingue located at this latitude, fir locally has a better capacity for establishment under cover dominated by trembling aspen compared to those dominated by black spruce. The climatic and edaphic conditions are similar in the two stand types, but the biotic conditions differ. The undergrowth under spruce is dominated by mosses and shrubs of the Ericaceae family, while the undergrowth associated with poplar stands has a higher specific richness, more particularly in shrub and herbaceous species. Plant communities in tree strata and undergrowth are known to affect soil fungal communities and in particular mycorrhizal communities. However, the latter could explain the differences in fir establishment observed between the two types of stand. Indeed, mycorrhizae are mutually beneficial symbioses between fungi and tree roots and they are particularly important for the nutrition of plants in the boreal forest. However, there is very little information on mycorrhizae in the Quebec boreal system relative to Scandinavia or Alaska. In this project, we tested 1) whether the soil fungal communities are different between poplar and spruce stands, 2) whether fir trees associate with a greater number of fungal species, but also with different species under poplars and 3) whether the symbioses set up under poplars are more effective than those under spruce trees for the nutrition of fir. High throughput DNA sequencing of soil fungi has detected high fungal diversity and revealed differences in the composition of fungal communities in poplar and spruce, both for decomposing fungi and for mycorrhizal fungi. For two years, sixty fir seedlings were monitored in the field in order to relate growth and rate of nutrients in the needles (two estimators of vigor) to the rate of mycorrhization and fungal diversity. Analysis revealed that the nutrient level in fir needles was higher under poplars compared to fir growing under spruce near ericaceous plants. In addition, the presence of ericaceous plants was correlated with changes in the mycorrhizal fungal community associated with fir roots, as well as a decrease in the nitrogen content in the needles. Experiments were also carried out in a growth chamber to determine if mycorrhization had an impact on the germination, survival, nutrition and growth of young seedlings. To do this, fir trees were sown in organic and mineral soils from different types of stands and half were sterilized in order to eliminate microorganisms. The results obtained after three growing seasons detected an effect of the identity of soil microorganisms rather than an effect of the rate of mycorrhization on the nutrition and growth of the fir tree. In addition, fir trees growing in soils harvested under spruce but at a distance from ericaceous plants had better nitrogen nutrition than in soils collected under poplar. A longer-term experiment and a more complex experimental set-up integrating the possibility of forming functional mycorrhizal networks between plants should be considered in order to test the importance of interactions on the establishment of the fir tree and its longer-term nutrition. Overall, the results of the thesis indicate that the observed differences in abundance and growth of fir under poplar and spruce are the result of complex interactions, where mycorrhizal communities and dominant plant communities play a role. The differences in soil fungal communities and nutrients in organic soil observed between the two stands could explain the better nutrition of fir under poplars

Full textGiven the toxicity of trace elements (TE) in the environment, plants developed varions strategies used currently for phytoremediation. Trees appear more efficient than herbaceous species for phytoextraction as they have a larger biomass and a deeper root system. The work was thus performed on woody species widespread in Limousin region, particularly conifers: Douglas fir, hybrid larch and its two parents, European larch and Japanese larch. Several culture models were used to allow, through complementary approaches, a better understanding of the response of these conifers to TE: in vitro grown plantlets and seedlings or 2-year-old trees grown in greenhouse. Conifers were exposed to a single TE, cadmium (Cd), or to several TE (As, Pb, Sb) present in soils collected from two former mining sites. Among investigated species, results showed that Douglas exhibited the highest rate of Cd accumulation. However, the amount stored in aboveground biomass remained low compared to other tree species already used in phytoextraction. Furthermore, the chemical characterization of cell wall pectins highlighted quantitative and qualitative modifications suggesting a Cd exclusion process. At the intracellular level, results showed that polyamines and thiol-rich oligopeptides did not appear to be involved in Cd compartmentation. However, a proline accumulation was observed in response to Cd and other TE, suggesting an involvement of proline as antioxidant molecule and / or TE scavenger. Overall, results highlighted the need to optimize conifer growth and soil TE phytoavailability before to propose these conifers, particularly Douglas, for the phytoextraction of TE

Full textFrom more than fifty years ago, the broaching process is what the aeronautic engine manufacturers use the most to machine turbine disc fir-tree slots. The aim of this thesis is to improve the understanding of the broaching process in order to optimize the efficiency of this process. This study is divided into four steps: a study of Udimet 720® machinability, the modelization of fir-tree slot broaches and of cutting forces, an experimental study of fir-tree slots broaching and finally, a proposed method of process monitoring. A study of Udimet 720® machinability is made to fill the lack of current studies about this superalloy and to develop cutting forces model for the modelization of the broaching process. Modelization allows the association of specific forces to each discretized broach tooth according to various machining parameters. Fir tree slots broaching trials were used to check the accuracy of modelization and to suggest, according to the latter, conception choices aiming at improving the efficiency of the process. Process monitoring, in the broaching field, offers a strategy which purpose is to detect various machining disturbances and to limit the risk of rejected parts with high added value

Full textThe Queyras is a region located at the limit of oceanic, continental and Mediterranean climatic influences. This specificity led to a level of biodiversity exceptional but particularly sensitive to global changes. We used a pluridisciplinary paleocological approach by means of pedoanthracology and dendrochronology applied in old growth forests of Larch (Larix decidua), Stone pine (Pinus cembra) and Fir (Abies alba) to assess the present forest dynamics and to contribute to forecast the probable future forest dynamics. Wood charcoal analyses issued from natural soils sampled in these forests reveal past periods with vegetation composition sometimes quite different from the present one . Larch and Stone pine installed in the early Holocene (respectively 8873-9014 cal. BP and 8702 – 9024 cal. BP). Climate-growth relationship evidence the high sensitivity of both stone pine and fir to hydrological conditions which attests the dry conditions of this massif. In addition to that, the study of the upper limit dynamics of subalpine forests during the Holocene reveals that global changes seem to favour Larch. Whereas pedoanthracology results show permanent succession of Larch and Stone pine at the subalpine vegetation stage over the Holocene period, dendrochronology emphasizes the consequences of global changes: Stone pine gets more and more sensitive to climate warming while Larch seems to benefit of land use changes associated with temperature increase

Full textBy-products from wood industry, particularly knots, contain different types of molecules that can be valued as a source of bioactive components meeting therapeutic needs. It is on this idea that the project "Le Bois Santé" was designed. Through the collaboration of several partnerships, the present work aims initially to develop a "green" extraction processes (solid-liquid and supercritical) to obtain an extract rich in lignans from a mixture of norway spruce and silver fir knots. The effects of operating conditions on the extraction yield of each target compound and the antioxidant activity of the extracts were determined. To understand the entire process, the project aims to investigate the impact of concentration and drying processes using vacuum evaporation and lyophilisation. Moreover, the separation and purification of the compounds have been developed and optimized using frontal chromatography technique

Full textIn the context of sustainable development which has seen the introduction of the biocides directive BPD 98/8/CE in the EU, innovative wood preservation practices such as Heat Treatment (HT) become relevant. Wood HT, also termed wood thermal modification, is a physical modification technology by which wood is heated at around 200 °C in an inert atmosphere. The main purpose of the treatment is to improve the biological durability and dimensional stability of wood. Current studies on thermally modified wood (TMW) quality are focusing on treated material, on treatment conditions or on species effect on the end-product characteristics. Relatively little is known about the effect of intrinsic wood properties on its thermal modification. As wood properties vary especially under the influence of human activities through sylviculture, this thesis studied the effect of European oak and silver fir wood density and chemical composition on their thermal modification kinetic. An X rays computed tomography (CT) and densitometer were used to characterize wood samples. Boards were heat-treated by conduction under vacuum using a pilot furnace, whereas sawdust samples underwent thermo-gravimetric analysis under nitrogen. The analysis allowed finding intra- and interspecific variations, especially within growth rings and along radial direction (from pith to bark). Forest management impacted heat modification kinetic of the studied samples, especially in silver fir where fast grown wood was more sensitive to treatment. The finding will be used as additional information to the wood industry which will account for homogeneity of loadings destined to heat treatment
