This study examines ideas about and photographs of the Sabra, a small yet influential grouping within Zionism that emerged in Jewish Palestine circa 1930 to play a heroic role in the creation of Israel. Drawing inspiration from labour Zionism, at its height the movement is claimed to have numbered twenty thousand people. The Sabra had its own ideals and values that were emulated throughout Jewish society in Palestine. This thesis investigates the use of SABRE as a hyperpolarisation method within the Earth's magnetic Field (EFNMR) and develops an EFNMR apparatus to optimise sensitivity, resolution and performance. A fundamental problem in NMR and MRI is the inherent low sensitivity of the techniques due to the nature of the normal spin distribution at room temperature and in currently available magnets. This Boltzmann distribution means that few nuclear magnetic moments contribute to the detected signal. Hyperpolarisation is a method used to counter this by enhancing the NMR signal. This thesis describes an experimental investigation of the geomagnetic pulsations (Pi2) associated with the onset of magnetospheric substorms undertaken with the Sweden And Britain Radar Aurora Experiment (SABRE) in conjunction with a network of ground-based magnetometers. The signatures observed on the two measuring systems are compared and have been interpreted in terms of the substorm current wedge and the substorm enhanced electrojet regions.
