Abstract:
The introductory section of the thesis puts forward a view of the usefulness of the concept of masochism in studying literature, arguing that the tendency has been inadequately formulated by psychoanalytic theory. It refers to debates within gay studies, feminism, psychoanalysis and literary studies to contextualise the argument of the thesis. The first chapter analyses Freud's key essay on masochism, 'The Economic Problem of Masochism' (1924) and appraises other theoretical contributions which have discussed the relation of masochism to artistic creativity. It goes on to critique the feminist view of women's masochism as reflecting patriarchal relations, and examines Jungian perspectives which focus on the notion of an imitatio Christi. Chapter two contrasts a Christian view of suffering with that of psychoanalysis. It examines Simone Weil's life and ideas in the light of a sublimatory or moral masochism, and looks at the 'agonic' thought of Unamuno. The historical moment at which the term masochism was coined is the focus of the opening part of chapter three. Sacher-Masoch's novel Venus in Furs is analysed, referring to Deleuze's commentary which emphasises the death instinct. Sacher-Masoch's untranslated novel, Die Seelenfängerin, is also discussed. Chapter four deals with Michel Leiris's L'age d'homme, analysing the central themes of masculinity, the risk inherent in literary creativity and the sacred element in masochistic self-exposures. The final chapter on works by Marguerite Duras examines a novella, L'homme assis dans le couloir, describing the process of reading as a form of masochistic introjection. It then looks at La douleur to focus on a masochistic, feminine rite of passage. A discussion of La maladie de la mort locates a shattered solitude within masochistic desire. The thesis concludes by proposing a more nuanced dialogue between psychoanalysis and literature, by emphasising the importance of an exploratory women's writing, and suggesting the need for a more consciously masochistic body politic.

Coelho, Bruna Martins.

Abstract:
The following dissertation introduces the \"unconscious\" as an intrinsical matter of Gilles Deleuze\'s intellectual path. Having as a horizon \"Difference and Repetition\", which would answer, among others, the attempt of constructing a notion of the \"unconscious\" as an \"immanent field\", simultaneously with the critic of the traditional image of thought, it is shown how this project was already being developt on his monographic studies about Hume, Bergson, Nietzsche, Proust and Sacher-Masoch. Together with the \"unconscious\" issue as a field, Deleuze thinks both the temporal and the constitutional of the subject, or of the unpersonal individualizations, processes from the repetition, major ontological concept, through the description of syntheses operated by habit, memory, the eternal return and by the death instinct. Firstly introduced on Deleuze\'s monographys, \"Diference and Repetition\" reintroduces these synthesis as of the \"time\" or of the \"unconscious\", refunding a transcendental esthetics. Replace the \"unconscious\" problem giving it a positive ontological status, depends on it\'s dialogue with Freud\'s and Lacan\'s psychoanalysis and with the ontologies of the negative, which they were tributed to.

Abstract:
This thesis means to study the representation of Meduse's myth from a group of masculine narratives. Therefore its hypothesis is that the meetings between men and women as described in literature are a fight, and the two parts of this thesis successively analyse aesthetic and literary delusions (mystifying erotic look of the end of the nineteenth century and the unilateral speech of desire of the twentieth). The first two chapters are a study of Meduse's myth (horrible, disturbing and petrifying strangeness) and its double : Melusine's myth (dream of an androgynous and reassuring feminity), whereas the following chapter constitutes their indivisibility. The fourth chapter produces exploitation of Melusine's myth by a. Breton, while the fifth explains variants (four surrealist stories, P. J. Jouve 's prose). Lastly, petrifying strangeness reappears in the shape of dismay and giddiness in the sixth chapter which deals with G. Bataille's work

Paris 7, 2008. http://www.theses.fr/2008PA070111.

Abstract:
Psychoanalysis is able to sustain the elaboration of a psychotic subject towards an "elegant solution" as the reduction of a delusional metaphor letting her have therapeutic effects, or towards a "suppleance" such as writing, often a literary perversion, or at last the constitution of a partner by the side of the subject, in a most frequently perverse way, but in the sense of perversion distinguished from perversity. It happens that feminine figures are often involved in those solutions. Several have to be described, "The" woman and the one Lacan named "hommelle"(she-man) the muse: literary creation at the cross of both. First of all "The" woman that becomes the subject in his delusion, would it be man or woman, and it is the most classical case of President Schreber but also the erotomaniac woman who becomes "The" woman, object of love, lacking to the Object as named by the alienist Clerambault The muse, heroin of the surrealist's Amour fou (crazy love), as the Elsa of Aragon, have commune feature with "The" woman. Then the "hommelle" which can be found as well in the fiction work of Joyce, Ulysses on the feature of Bella Cohen, than in the work of Leopold Sacher-Masoch which should not be reduced in the became famous Venus in fors. That one is in fact no more than a form of the many feminine character that accompanied the author during his live, as well as in his numerous novels and autobiographic texts. These solutions are far better than the involvement in such group based on a community of jouissance, better than the simple reduction of the delusion with pharmacology. They also opened a lacanian prospect on feminity

Pühler, Simon. "Funny games." Doctoral thesis, Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, Philosophische Fakultät III, 2014. http://dx.doi.org/10.18452/17063.

Abstract:
"FUNNY GAMES.
"FUNNY GAMES. Spielräume des Sadomasochismus in Film und Medien" aims to reconstruct a history of pleasure and gratification through pain in the media since the end of the eighteenth century. In addition to classical sado-masochistic literature, the thesis focuses on movies in which modern forms of experiencing and desiring pain such as VIDEODROME (1983), I AM GUILTY (2005), THE HURT LOCKER (2008) and SHORTBUS (2006) manifest themselves. Central to the study are concepts of techno-imaginary wish machines and infernal devices, dynamised ego-apparatuses, that are experienced and expressed through the media of their time by writers, philosophers, psychoanalysts and film directors such as Donatien-Alphonse-François de Sade, Leopold and Wanda von Sacher-Masoch, Ernst Kapp, Sigmund Freud, Daniel Paul Schreber, Jacques Lacan, Gilles Deleuze and Félix Guattari, David Cronenberg, Michael Haneke and Kathryn Bigelow. The present study, an attempt to secure the medial evidence and try it out at the same time, is meant most of all as an invitation to participate: to experience positive desire and lust while obsessively progressing through virtual worlds of dreams and nightmares and the real world of the human body, to open oneself to new experiences in order to gain both new knowledge and new desires. Anti-Oedipus as a textual videogame. The analytical tools employed in this study include findings from (structural) psychoanalysis, media sciences, (movie) philosophy, gender theory, the theory of violence, fetish theory and game theory as applied in cultural studies. They have proven to be very helpful in illuminating at least some aspects of the mystery that is the sado-masochist desire for pain.
