Abstract:
Thesis advisor: Daniel J. Harrington
A powerful and captivating theme throughout scripture is that of atonement. An act which seeks to gain atonement is itself part of a larger trajectory. This is essentially aimed at maintaining the proper relationship between God and humanity. Scripture presents two poignant cases of atonement, one being the Day of Atonement and the other the self sacrifice of Jesus Christ. Through the course of this thesis I will speak to these two cases of atonement. There are three primary points of view from which I wish to present atonement: scripturally, historicall

Abstract:
As a Pharisee and an apostle, Paul's theology is fundamentally the theology of the Jewish Scriptures. At the heart and centre of those Scriptures is the book of Leviticus. This book not only has a formative influence on Paul's early education and rabbinic training, its theology of sacrifice has also informed and clarified Paul's theology ofatonement, baptism and the Eucharist. Recent research into the Levitical theology of sacrifice has elucidated the meaning, purpose and function not only of the different offerings but also of the different rites involved in Israel'S cult of atonement. Abstract:
In this thesis, I construct a sacrificial explanation of atonement, the expanded version of which explains how the work of Christ addresses in various ways every component of the problem of sin. The first two chapters of this endeavour argue for a Wolterstorffian definition of forgiveness according to which forgiveness is the act of ceasing to treat a wrong as part of a wrongdoer's moral history and instead as part of their personal history. Moreover, I demonstrate that this definition of forgiveness is superior to the major alternatives in the literature due in no small part to its consistenc

Abstract:

Sacrifice often connotes death or some form of lack within popular discourse. The association of sacrifice with death is assumed in some strains of the Christian tradition that employ sacrifice within a penal substitutionary account of the atonement. In this framework, sacrifice is understood as death for the purposes of punishment. This dissertation challenges the identification of sacrifice with death. It presents a reinterpretation of sacrifice through a canonical and literary reading of Old and New Testament texts. Sacrificial practice displayed in Leviticus and Hebrews suggests that sa

Chapter 1 first establishes the study's methodology, then explores Hebrews' interest(s) in Leviticus as a pathway into Leviticus itself, sketching Hebrews' appropriation of the Day of Atonement, the high priest as sacrificial officiant, daily sacrifices, the inauguration of covenant and cult, and the twofold conception of purifying God's people and place. Chapter 2 offers a portrait of Levitical sacrifice, first examining its creational foundations, canonical precursors, and covenantal context, then surveying the various types of sacrifices. This motif has been widely criticized by feminist theologians as an instrument that exacerbates the oppression of women, since it encourages self-sacrifice and in this way legitimizes abusive relationships. The research project focuses on Mary Grey's contribution to feminist discourse on atonement as the work of Christ and, more specifically, the symbol of the cross. Abstract:
