Abstract:
Twenty-four same-sex, three-person groups (a confederate plus two naive participants) completed a “group decision-making study” in which the success of the group depended upon the willingness of one of its members (the confederate) to endure pain and inconvenience. The ordeal that the altruistic confederate endured was judged to be more difficult and costly than the experience of other group members, and the altruists were ultimately awarded more money and accorded higher status. In a second study, 334 undergraduates read a description of the procedures used in Study 1 and made judgments and m

The affective, behavioral, and cognitive influence of sexual sin is investigated in this research. In Study 1, we demonstrated that religious people watching erotic (vs. neutral) images reported greater sexual guilt, which in turn increased their willingness to self-sacrifice for a cause. Extending these results, in Study 2 we demonstrated that when recalling a time when they had committed a sexual sin (vs. no sin), people with an intrinsic religious orientation believe in a more punishing view of God (akin to the Old Testament), which in turn predicts the extent to which they engaged in painf

I specify both challenges and opportunities for integrating social scientific and theological accounts of “the human.” I first show that the interests of many theological ethicists lead them to engage social scientific studies. I then demonstrate that numerous social scientists caution against relying on their publications about the human since these results are of questionable generality and veracity. I next identify some research practices that are recommended by social scientists for restoring the credibility of their publication record. I also illustrate how theological ethicists can benef

AbstractThis article presents evidence concerning women's representation in Canada's provincial legislative assemblies over a 20-year period (1975–1994). Data from 3,755 elections and over 11,000 candidates are analyzed to inspect trends in representation. The authors find there has been a gradual increase in both female candidates and legislators. The New Democratic party has clearly been the leader in putting women on the ballot and into legislatures at the provincial level. In addition, hypotheses are tested to see if there are differences across provinces in parties' willingness to nominat

AbstractAbraham’s willingness to sacrifice his son, the “binding of Isaac”, already in early Church tradition was discovered as the prototype of the Christian passion story, Abraham figuring as the “type” of God Father, Isaac as the “type” of Christ. The Biblical story which is told in a strongly emotional tone, thus was to find its continuation in a passion story loaded with triggers of emotion. What is less well known is that the story has equally strongly affected the emergence of the third monotheist religion, Islam. We encounter in the Nil of Ancyra’s writing De monastica exercitatione at least a dozen instances of the allegorical interpretation of certain places in the Old Testament, where Nil of Ancyra’s exegesis seems to refer to the Philo of Alexandria’s interpretation. In a few places there are significant differences in interpretation, but Nil decisively continues or repeats exegetical ideas of Philo. In two cases, in a longer allegory about Joseph who seeks his brothers and about the ritual washing of the sacrificial calf (De monastica exercitatione 44-45 and 56), the dependence on Philo becomes ve

But Mel Gibson’s unhistorical additions reveal a disturbing willingness to use repugnant anti-Semitic subtexts as well as violence to elicit moviegoers’ emotions. While Gibson may claim that it expresses his faith, the film seems less about art and personal faith than about what Hollywood does best— making money by sacrificing artistic integrity.

We investigated whether the responses of 68 ethics committee members and staff to trolley dilemmas could predict their responses to research ethics problems concerning vaccine trials. Trolley dilemmas deal with the issue of sacrificing some for the benefit of many, which is also a core issue in the vaccination trial dilemmas. The subjects’ responses to trolley dilemmas showed no statistically significant correlation with their responses to our vaccination trial dilemmas. We concluded that, if there is a component of transferable intuition between the contexts, it must be small and dominated by

Abstract Sunni Islam is not where the primary action is when it comes to Muslim ideas about martyrdom. Our attention, with regard to martyrdom, should more naturally be drawn toward Shi’ite Islam. It is Shi’ite Muslims whose willingness to die has left an enduring mark on the world during the last two decades—in the Iranian Revolution; in the Iran-Iraq war; in the bitterness of the Lebanese civil war. Moreover, modern Shi’ite ideologues—Taliqani, Shari’ati, Mutahhari—have created out of the Shi’ite doctrine of martyrdom a sophisticated ideology of social and political activism and revolution.

Abstract The 1951 production of Die Mutterreveals Brecht’s willingness to re-invent his work in the early GDR, even at the cost of sacrificing some of his principles. He made significant textual and aesthetic changes in order to transform his agitational play into a deceptively innocuous piece of family history. In the short term, these strategic concessions, both to official cultural policy and to the audience, helped Brecht to propagate his anti-war argument successfully. In the longer term, however, they had major consequences for the East German reception of Die Mutter. This was because Br
