Full textThe aim of this study was to analyse the way last year high-school students from Sacsamarca (Ayacucho) give meaning to their intentions to migrate after they finish highschool. The purpose was to obtain key information about young people in Sacsamarca in order to create possible future guidelines for working with them, regarding the social contexts they encounter themselves in. Findings are drawn from a four session workshop with 23 last year high-school students from Sacsamarca (Ayacucho) in the southern highlands of Peru. Through participatory-action research techniques, we explored the manner in which students conceived their present and anticipated their future according to their social role within the community. Results were organized in three dimensions: work, community and education, showing that migration constitutes an everyday life event associated with a momentary or definite pathway to personal, professional and community development. Accordingly, the majority of students believe attaining a higher education in the city is an opportunity to give back to their community. Nevertheless, the challenges they experience within the migration process, along with the tensions between school and community activities, continue to enhance the social stigma associated to the rural world and its traditions. In order to strengthen local knowledge and critical thinking about community resources, the need for promoting active high-school student participation within educational and community contexts is addressed, as well as the opportunities and challenges presented working with this population through participatory techniques.

Full textSacsamarca, Ayacucho region, is a district of extreme poverty with water quality monitoring insufficiency. Its population shows genuine interest because stomach diseases frequency and inadequate wastewater treatment. The aim of this research is to assess quality of freshwater that is used for human consumption in this village, by means of some physicochemical indicators, relating water management and hydrological cycle understanding. The freshwater quality monitoring is carried out in June and September 2017, and eight sampling stations are set up -disposed in Caracha River, reservoir and effluent of the wastewater treatment pond, freshwater spring (puquial) and Uerpococcha Lagoon - for in situ measurements and sampling. Parameters measured in the field are temperature, electrical conductivity, total dissolved solids and pH; in the laboratory chemical oxygen demand, total solids, phosphates, nitrates, sulfates, and total metals (arsenic, cadmium, calcium, copper, iron, magnesium, mercury, lead, potassium, sodium and zinc) are analyzed. Standardized volumetric, gravimetric and instrumental techniques are applied, such as UV-Visible and atomic absorption spectroscopy. The results indicate that all parameters studied do not exceed the established limits, except for phosphates (1.51 ppm) in the puquial, and arsenic (0.13 ppm) in the Caracha River. Finally, DPSIR framework, an approach that integrates environmental and social characteristics and allows locating the physicochemical values found in the hydrosocial system of Sacsamarca is applied. It results in absence of surveillance of freshwater waters and lack of coordination with higher institutional organizations to reverse high levels of arsenic in Caracha River.

Full textAt the beginning of the eighties, the mountains were the scene of one of the most violent periods in the history of Peru with the outbreak of the Internal Armed Conflict (CAI) (1980-2000). This event caused the destruction of the local agricultural and livestock production system in various high Andean communities that resulted with devastating consequences: abandoned farmlands, populations and ranches looted and taken from their inhabitants. They were years when the livestock and agricultural systems of the country's peasant communities were weakened and destroyed by violence. In the community of Sacsamarca, Ayacucho region, the shepherds were able to cope with this context with the use of new livestock practices that seek to seek and recover the livestock system after the effects of the CAI. These forms of adaptation are evidence of the changes that have occurred in the landscape over time. In this sense, this research proposes to identify and understand the changes in the landscape of Sacsamarca after the CAI and the effects they have produced in the use of the livestock space and in the pastoral activity of the community. To obtain this information, a historical analysis of the landscape was carried out that analyzes and describes the panorama of Sacsamarca, before, during and after the period of violence, the actors and forces that participated in the production of the livestock space. In addition, a perception study of the shepherds was used to understand the mental image they have of the landscape. The resulting vegetation will be a key element to understand the vision of the shepherds about the past and future of Sacsamarca. The results of the research highlight the influence of CAI as an important historical precedent in the landscape of Sacsamarca. This historical fact caused radical changes in the management of resources (pastures) and in the use of livestock space (grazing).

Full textThe present investigation intends the process of community participation of women’s in an Andean rural community of Ayacucho, which was severely affected by the internal armed conflict that Perú experienced during the year 1980 - 2000.The participants of this study are women of the peasant community of Sacsamarca residing in the same community (district capital and peasant community). It is a qualitative research, and the data collection was done through indepth interviews based on a semi-structured guide. The results are focused on the construction of the meaning of participation based on women’s own practices and notions. Furthermore, this research will address the mechanisms of exclusion and marginalization of women in community public spaces, among others, as well as the factors that have made participation possible, and the agencies that they raise to overcome the obstacles. Additionally, the research gathers proposals put forward by women to encourage and strengthen female participation. Participation in the community will be marked by gender relations, and the study shows how women warmisapas, single women (widows, single or divorced mothers), do have greater advantages for participation compared to women with a partner or married. On the other hand, the operation, dynamics and communal and municipal structures will determine who participates or not.
