Full textTwo of De Sade's novels are structured around two aspects of eighteenth-century medicine. It is first of all a theoretical discourse, of which one aspect deals with questions concerning life. But Enlightenment medicine includes also a praxis which is, through its handling of the body, in close contact with disease and death. La Nouvelle Justine gives a new impetus to the debate on life, its origin and development, within the framework of a philosophical treatise which undertakes an analysis of the genital organs, pays particular attention to tetralogical cases, takes a position on the origin of the embryo, and works out a theory of human development from childhood to old age. The treatise, which is a fixed, inert space, has a dynamic quality conferred on it by the medical character of these questions and by the subversiveness of the approach that De Sade adopts. In Histoire de Juliette De Sade presents practical medicine in a context in which death acts as the driving force of the narration. The principal constituants of clinical medicine are taken out of their context to transform death into a spectacle, thus ridding it of its monotony. The technical aspects of medicine, whether they take the form of the identification of vital signs, of machines or of surgical instruments, the pathology of the humours, climatic medicine or fevers, are the narrative platforms which De Sade uses

Full textThis study attempts to elucidate how works of Sade, whose theme is ‘‘misfortunes of virtue and prosperity of vice ’’, relate the change of thoughts from the theology to the materialism. The first part of this study presents the genesis of the story of Justine and Juliette, and follows the history of themes about morals. Then, our reading shows features of Sade’s writing, his choice of words and his rhetoric. They reveal the effect of erotic and violent words juxtaposed with the conventional language. We illustrate finally Sade’s materialist vision, and reveal relationship of his thoughts and his writing to the theme of the story. The author distorts a materialist philosophy by his own logic, and the story reflects his viewpoints

Full textThis thesis is an attempt to examine his contemporaries' remarks on the works of the marquis de Sade (1740-1814) and his personality. One could observe, throughout this survey of voluminous documents in his time and after, that a considerable change had come over his image. .

Full textEarlier unfinished work, Sade's travel to Italy (1775-1776) comes as the first constituent of literary and historical research in the sadian opus. His discovery of Italy - geographical perception, sociological and political analysis, historical and artistic heritage, economic life - serves as prelude to the histoire de Juliette 's symphony (1797) and achieves his first steps in immoralism. Florence, Rome, and Naples: these are the three preromantic metaphors in which Sade forestalls Stendhal

Full textSome twenty years ago, Lely and Daumas published voyage distalia by Sade. In this account of a travel, we can read his opinion on the Italian painting. This urged us to consider the part of painting (and of sculpture, engraving, drawing) in the intellectual formation and in Sade’s work. The first part of our thesis deals with the pictorial environment of Sade. ("des images autour de Sade") this part is completed by the study of Voyage d'Italie. The thirdpart deais with the influence of painting on sade's plays and novels (we could say: "images de sade"). Finally, we conclude with the pictures born from the marquis's books : the illustrations of his texts. In the course of our research we met two painters important for Sade’s work: tierce (met in Naples) and Chery (first illustrator of Sade: frontispiece of justine)
