Abstract:

What is it about India and Varanasi, this holy city on the bank of the Ganga that has made me return, again and again? It is definitely not the freezing cold temperatures during mid-winter, nor is it the dry heat at spring, or the wet and humid months of the monsoon. It also has nothing to do with the bottomless poverty – the beggars halfeaten by leprosy pushing what once was an arm through the open window of my cab. It is not the constant power failures, the dirt, the touts, the diarrhoea, or the souvenirs. What is it then? For ten years I’ve been asking myself this question without yet having come to know the answer. ‘Mother India’, I have realised, raises more questions than she provides answers, and it could simply be that it is this infinite roundabout of questions begging for answers that makes some of us return – over and over again.

India is a continent of paradoxes and contradictions – desperate poverty and immense wealth, purity and impurity, caste and class, heat and cold, monsoon and drought, mosques and temples, ahimsa and violence, secularism and fanaticism, sacred cows and holy men. Enigmatic customs and practices, raise an apparently never-ending line of questions with either no answers or a multitude of them.

In the pages to follow, I will try to shed light on one of the cultural and religious traditions that I find fascinating in this country of contrasts. What I have in mind is the practice of renunciation, a life-style adopted by men and women of all ages. These holy figures, dressed in saffron (some also in white, red or black), have left the material world behind in order to devote their thoughts and actions – their beings – to matters of a higher spiritual nature and, in this way, to prepare themselves to leave their bodies. They have left behind the world of domestic demands, obligations and dependency and entered what is often described as a state of peace (santi) and eternalhappiness.

Al, Khazi Manal A. "An explanatory study of Kuwaiti youths' knowledge of Sadu heritage : their appreciation of Sadu and its contemporary expression in textile." Thesis, University of Southampton, 2016. https://eprints.soton.ac.uk/410274/.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of this study is to answer the following research questions: How can the new generation of Kuwaiti youth (those aged between 15 and 21) communicate their rich heritage and instinctive awareness of the cultural craft form known as Sadu? To what extent are they aware of this vital craft form? Are young Kuwaiti women interested in wearing textiles that include Sadu? How can one take advantage of Sadu heritage and translate it into proper modern designs for contemporary Kuwaiti women? To answer these questions, the researcher used two research methods: questionnaires and interviews. The questionnaires focussed on 120 young Kuwaiti women aged 15–21 from each of the six districts of Kuwait, after which the researcher conducted interviews with twelve young women from the same sample (randomly selected from all six districts) in order to gain deeper and more comprehensive answers to the research questions. Three hypotheses emerged from the results that were presented that will be verified in this discussion, as follows: • H1. Young women aged 15–21 who are aware of Sadu are more receptive to textiles that are mixed with Sadu than other young women. • H2. Some young women will wear textiles mixed with Sadu because this will help them reclaim their cultural heritage and traditions. • H3. Some young women who are aware of current contemporary textiles will wear textiles mixed with Sadu because such textiles are part of a new design. Data was collected through two questionnaires; the following results were concluded: • The sample‟s awareness of Sadu was less than average; • Their awareness of contemporary textiles and trends was greater than average; • Their readiness and acceptance of wearing textiles blended with Sadu was less than average. Looking at the correlation between these three topics, it was evident in the first survey that the correlation between awareness of Sadu and readiness and acceptance to wear textiles blended with Sadu was average; the second survey, however, showed that this correlation was weak (almost zero). Conversely, the correlation between awareness of contemporary textiles /trends and readiness to wear textiles blended with Sadu was very weak in the first survey (no correlation was identified between them) and average in the second survey. Based on the above information, the thesis makes a series of detailed recommendations. These include that: 1. The raw materials and natural dyeing used in Sadu should be preserved, its techniques and developed in a scientific and simple manner, and that the heritage of Kuwait should be connected with the ongoing rapid changes elsewhere throughout the world; 2. Educational films on traditional contemporary textiles and accessories should be made and incorporated into a contemporary textiles -design curriculum and developed as a source of innovation, and that Sadu should be incorporated as a subject in different school curricula, thus raising Kuwaiti females‟ awareness of the country‟s environment and heritage; 3. A museum should be established that would preserve traditional Kuwaiti textiles and accessories; 4. Awareness of Sadu in Kuwaiti society should be raised through the gateway of contemporary textiles; field trips should be offered to female students to visit handicraft and heritage sites. 5. Ethnographic museums should be established that will document the country‟s cultural and scientific material; 6. The Kuwaiti government should promote traditional crafts and the work of master weavers through the opening of training institutes and exhibitions; and 7. The media should take on a greater role in highlighting and publicising these crafts. Future research should be conducted into attempts to market Sadu within European contemporary textiles in a manner that conforms to Arabic traditions, implements Arabic and traditional contemporary textiles blended with Sadu, and remedies the limitations that were experienced during this study by avoiding the problem of the sample being influenced by the implemented contemporary textiles. Finally, this study recommends that new techniques should be developed that will provide increased opportunities for experimentation and innovation and the promotion of creative skills and innovative artistic solutions, and that our full attention should be given to cultural embellishments, as these have educational and economic importance for society at both the scientific and practical levels.

Abstract:
This is a practice based research, based on a representation of motifs related to Kuwait's traditions and heritage through Sadu textile; the research starts with determining the factors needed by Sadu in order to move to the monumental modern art form. One of these factors is the analysis presented by the artists of the first generation in Kuwait concerning Sadu and what was presented by Sami Mohammed in his "Sadu Project" in the Eighties. From another side, to present what affected Sadu through the globalisation concept and to benefit from the same in order to show Kuwait visual culture, analyse and develop the colour philosophy in order to reach a colour group that represents Sadu modern art. This aspect of the research is bibliographic, along with other aspects, including a critical reflection on practice. The research begins by using Jacques Derrida's "Deconstruction" as a process to dismantle Sadu motifs as ornaments, symbols, colours and subject matter. It is original research as it is based on an interview with Sami Mohammed's, which revealed that, in the Sixties, he was one of the pioneer artists who used modern art as a different area in their art careers, while also building national abstraction in Kuwaiti art. The other interview is with Yahya Swailem, an art teacher and critic in Kuwait since the Sixties, who provided the research with an overview of the history of art in Kuwait. The research aims at attracting the current and young generations to the heritages and traditions of their country by transforming the Sadu textile to a Sadu modern art form in paintings and increasing the art appreciation and their cultural awareness. The research title is also the research aim and the selection of it was based on the existence of words that contributed in refining the twentieth century art as modern art and monumental and Kuwait for determining the research location that is considered the base of the research and linking them with the word "representing" that also shows something new presented by this research. Sadu was selected for this research since it is a major and essential part of the heritage and traditions of Kuwait and since it is a textile, it may be on a two dimension form and for what it witnessed through the art in Kuwait through the first generation artists. Sami Mohammed considered it a start to success in changing its form and making it more modern. The paintings produced in the research display Sadu motifs with a colour philosophy that is different from previous presentations, with a focus on large-scale paintings to gain a new meaning through monumental Sadu art.

Abstract:
Thesis (Ph. D.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Political Science, 2009.

This empirical study examines the political significance of religious leaders-known commonly as sadhus-in a huge and mature democracy like India. During the late '80s and the '90s, a flurry of sadhu activism coincided with the dramatic rise of a previously insignificant political party, the Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP). As a conservative Hindu nationalist party, the BJP allied with many sadhus, came to power at the center and in many states, breaking the monopoly that the relatively secular Congress party had held for more than four decades. The sadhus and the BJP came together over the controversy of whether a Hindu temple had been destroyed to build a 16th century mosque (the Ram Janmabhoomi dispute). It propelled a few sadhus-who I describe as spiritual agents, whose essential identity is based on individualism, freedom from making long-term commitments, and yet committed to transcendental causes-to band together under contingent conditions and the availability of a platform to voice their discontent. However, both the coalition between pro-BJP sadhus and the BJP, as well as the desire to build the temple, unraveled over the next decade. Not only did the newly emergent BJP broaden its political base by distancing itself from a single issue, but the unity among sadhus also splintered. This thesis is an empirical and agent-centered approach to examine nationalism and a particular strain of religious fundamentalism. It examines the commonalities and differences among sadhus themselves as factors that explain both the unity among sadhus in one period and the splintering of that unity at another time.
(cont.) Sadhus are individualistic, free-floating, religious individuals who became sadhus not to pursue any social cause, but to live a life free of responsibilities and in tune with their inner callings. Aside from the role of outside forces and differences among sadhus over key political issues, I argue that essentially it is the elements common to the identity of sadhus as sadhus that temper their fundamentalist tendencies. Looking forward, the crouching Hindu serpent, like the famed kundalini in yoga, best characterizes this strain of sadhu-led Hindu fundamentalism, ever poised to rise and recoil.

CAPES - Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior
This paper seeks to demonstrate the social and economic benefits received by indigenous inhabitants of the region influence the Coari-Manaus Pipeline, in particular the Community of Indigenous Sahu-apé, formed by ethnic Indians of the Sateré-Mawé. It is known that indigenous communities are struggling with great difficulty to maintain their cultural traditions. And these difficulties are accentuated when they have to live on the fringes of a society with habits and values of their completely different, putting at risk the very survival of the community. Thus it is that, through a policy of attention to the needs of some indigenous communities located in the area of influence of the program pipeline Coari-Manaus, the Governments Federal, State and Municipal establishing an allocation of resources, of that program, to meet the demands of those communities, in particular the Community of Indigenous Sahu-apé, which will be addressed with greater emphasis in this work. Thus, can say these communities now have to keep the peace and to disseminate their culture without interference from the surrounding society, because the program provided that independence, even with the recognition and settlement of the land where they live as an Indigenous Land, as will be shown throughout this work.

This work assumed the intention to verify the protagonism of Zelinda da Silva Freitas, Baku of the Sateré-Mawé ethnicity. We search, together with it, to perfaz its trajectory of life since living the IT Ponta Alegre, where she was born, until the Sahu-apé Community located in the City of Iranduba/AM, where she honradamente plays the important recognized role of tuxaua in the way it its people. They are more than 30 years to the front of the Sahu-apé Community. A life marked in way the diverse antagonisms where to be woman and to locate itself as authority has a high price. The research arrives in port assumed it of the theories of sort in an eminently qualitative process, centered in the stories and narratives of tuxaua Baku, our main informer. In the analysis of the espacialidade of the Sahu-apé community we made use of the ethnographic method and the technique of the field notebook. In the collection of data of other coadjuvantes informers of the research we appeal to the technique of interview of the half-structuralized type. We hear in interview 10 resident people of the investigated aboriginal Community. The research sample that Baku owner is the first woman tuxaua that notice in the Amazonia is had. Its protagonism is widely recognized for the entities of aboriginal representation of the Amazonia as it is the case of the COIAB (Coordination of the Aboriginal Organizations of the Brazilian Amazonia) and Advice of the Tuxauas Biggest of the Etnia Sateré-Mawé. One concludes, finally, that the Sahu-apé community is suigeneris, hybrid, because she is not nor agricultural and nor urban, for is situated in the border of the white and the aboriginal, being aboriginal of what white.

Crystallography has played role in significantly improving our understanding of the mode of action of biological molecules resulting in wide industrial applications of thies technique.Within the framework of research dealing with Secondary Alcohol Dehydrogenases (SADHs) isolated from thermophilic bacteria, this project aims at understanding the strucutral basis which control and regulate (i) the specificity of this enzyme for the cafactor and (ii) its stereo and enantio selectivity for its substrate. With the aim of widening its realm of application as a catalyst in industrial fermentation of alcohols and as calyst in the asymmetric synthesis as applied pharmaceutically. The powerful techniques of mutagenesis combined with crystallography were utilized. Mutations of residues (Gly198 and Tyr218) wich interact with the cofactor and are considered important for determinimg its specificity were planned and executed in an attempt to permit the use of an alternative cofactor which is viable for use in an industrial scale. Kinetic analysis of the mutant (Gly198) indicates that this is a potential candiadate and is a step in the right direction. mutations of amino acids that form the active site were conducted in a search for a mutant with a greater ability to reduce ketones, producing a wide variety of r-alcohols

Abstract: Crystallography has played role in significantly improving our understanding of the mode of action of biological molecules resulting in wide industrial applications of thies technique.Within the framework of research dealing with Secondary Alcohol Dehydrogenases (SADHs) isolated from thermophilic bacteria, this project aims at understanding the strucutral basis which control and regulate (i) the specificity of this enzyme for the cafactor and (ii) its stereo and enantio selectivity for its substrate.

Abstract:
The seed orchard of Prunus avium L., Čejkovka, LS LČR Lužná, was established in 2002. Low seed production is characteristic for the orchard. First seed collection took place in 2015, summing up to 35 kilograms. Based on genetic analysis, S locus alleles and microsatellite data were detected. Furthermore, phenology of blooming and fertility of individual ramets was observed. It was detected that from the registered 59 clones, 46 clones were of different genotypes and 29 clones are diferrent in S locus. Approximately 37% ramets in the orchard are genetically identical. In 2015, a total of 45% ramets produced seeds. Based on evidence, the effective number of clones in the orchard is 31, 12 based on SSRs and 10 based on S locus. The number of seed producing clones in 2015 was 20 based on evidence, 8 based on SSRs and only 5 based on S locuses. In order to achieve higher seed production it would be appropriate to partially supplement genetically identical clones with those of different genotypes. An additional option would be utilizing the existing orchard to collect grafts to establish a new, appropriately designed, orchard.

Abstract:
This thesis postulates that the inability of the post-apartheid government to deal decisively with the “legacies of apartheid education” is linked to the macro-educational policy trajectory endorsed by the African National Congress government in the early 1990s. It notes that post-apartheid education policymaking shows similarities with the National Party reforms initiated towards the end of the 1980s in education. In the late 1980s the apartheid government implemented a broad educational framework consonant with the rise of neo-liberal restructuring emerging internationally. It is argued that the teacher unions, and the South African Democratic Teachers Union (SADTU) in particular, were active role-players in shaping the new educational trajectory and discourse and that it was particularly because of the acquiescence of the unions that the government was able to embark on the road of neo-liberal restructuring with very little organised opposition. SADTU’s weak opposition to the rising influence of neo-liberal educational restructuring greatly facilitated the creation of a two-tier education system that South Africa is grappling with today, one for the rich and one for the poor.

Abstract:
Today is almost unknown the fact that on the string department at the academies of arts in our region most of the graduated students are women. The analysis of this process is worth the research attention of education and professional activities of this, relatively significant number of graduated women string instrumentalists. By comparing data from three cultural backgrounds of ex-Yugoslav territory we come to significant conclusions for the history of women's musical heritage in the region in this area and the methodology of work with future personnel. The aim of the research is the collection, selection and interpretation of data about the life of graduated women performers on stringed instruments in Novi Sad, Banja Luka and Zagreb since the establishment of these academic institutions to present day, in order to draw attention to the issue of constructing identity of women performers during and after the higher music education.Hypothesis 1 is that a significant number of female music performance graduates on string instruments contributes to improving the awareness of the importance of gender identity in the music art in the region.Hypothesis 2 is that the increased number of female music performance graduates on string instruments does not contribute to improving the awareness of the importance of gender identity in the music art in the region.Hypothesis 3 that professional identity of the female music performance graduates on string instruments is superior to all other components of identity, including gender. The corpus includes female music performance graduates on string instruments from the Academy of Arts in Novi Sad (20), Zagreb (4) and Banja Luka (8).Analysis of the 13 components of identity (childhood, education, nineties of the 20th century, marriage, children, mother tongue, then national, religious, professional identities, health, membership in professional associations and political parties, hobbies). The results show that the first hypothesis is only partly true, and that the third hypothesis is true for the total sample: all the female musicians prefer the professional identity from early childhood. Empirical data do not confirm the stereotype that the profession of a female musician exclude marriage, family and children. The research results are as important as the new drafting history of music and women in this area so much and for gender studies, which are undertaken for the advancement of women in various professions in modern times. In particular, the results would enrich teaching and methodical practice in the field of music education at all levels in our country. Data from this study could (indeed, must) become a part of textbooks. In addition the data that occurred in this research testify to the fact that in the world and in the region Yugoslav territory a significant number of women contributed, and still, perhaps more than ever, contributes to the development of music and musical culture.

Abstract:
[EN] This PhD in Fine Arts is the introduction to a Yantric Theory of Drawing as a result of researching plastic forms from the universal principles present in perceptive reality. Based on the yantra as an active element in the drawing of a integral mandalic vision, Drawing re-presents a vision of the world based on aesthetic distance, in which the sum and multiplication of all the parts is contemplated from one point of view, a naked eye. This perspective is transdimensional, whereby co-creative man is capable of making his own vision real, enjoying the aesthetic experience through the practice of Art. Art is the fifth element in which contact with Beauty takes place in a disinterested way. This thesis in its Form and Consciousness explores the fundaments of these aesthetic formulations through its most yogic roots in India. We will add a metaphor to such aesthetic formulations and explain them through the voice of the artist, in which the process of transmutation of the matter, the transformation of the Nature into Art takes place. The shilpi yogi is the inspiration and aspiration of the being which indwells the imagery artist who develops images of himself, the imprints of personal consciousness transcended through transpersonal art forms. Its being, its Presence, can be modulated through plasticity, from the purest abstraction to the finest figurative art. This thesis represents a plastic voyage to the very heart of India, in which an artist and a sadhu go hand in hand as a symbolic encounter between indosophy and the sublime plastic representative of the tragedy of duality, sunk in life under the weight of chiaroscuro. Light is the Great Symbolic Metaphor and the primordial object of the mystery of Science. The space of the heart is the fifth plastic element on which we base our Yantric Theory of Drawing. We use this to reintegrate the coherence of Art from all times and places, reinterpreting it from an optimistic historical standpoint. Drawing gives us the power to make this real (maya-magic), through the yantric vision. This thesis is the foundational preface to a way to make real the dream of the imagined, a function which Art, the original inoculant, has had throughout history. Such a possibility of form-function-power is endorsed by the most ancient foundations of civilization: the great symbolic potential which was crystalised in Man, the complex system of ancient times which doesn't respond to limits, but rather to constellations, the tantra, inspiration and aspiration of quantic meta-physics.

Abstract:
With the advent of the republic in France in the summer of 1792, the revolutionary potential initiated by the upheaval of 1789 suddenly exploded in Ireland. In a context of rising popular discontent led by the United Irishmen and the Defenders in Ireland, the Irish exiles in Paris also embraced the republic, first at the micro-local scale of the Irish College in Paris of which the students took control in a fleeting but highly significant moment, the ‘République au Collège’, then at the ‘festin patriotique’, a gathering of all the Atlantic revolutionary galaxy, but most notably of the ‘citizens’ of the Three Kingdoms. These two events initiated a process of personal engagement for each of the protagonists and a transnational revolutionary dynamic through the project of establishing the ‘Republic of the United States of France and Ireland’. This commitment and this dynamic were extant throughout the activities, both public and covert, of the Society of the English, Scottish and Irish at Paris or Société des Amis des Droits de l’Homme (SADH). They contributed, because of the collaboration between France and the SADH, to spark the war between England and France. The dialectic between the republican and counter-republican dynamics in the context of the French Wars led the protagonists of the Republic of the United States of France and Ireland to pursue and further define their project in an astonishing continuity between 1792 and 1798. While this republic project varied in its forms and modalities due to the changing political and geopolitical context, it reached its apex with the Franco-Irish expeditions of 1796 and 1798. Following the paths of twenty eight Irish republican patriots, and examining their networks of sociability and circulations, enable to question the motivations and forms of political engagement, in the perspective of a social history of political ideas, i.e. by studying the transition from words to acts, which depends on the circumstances and on the social environment. In the dialectic between Counter-Revolution and Revolution, this engagement leads to a process of ‘radicalisation’. By doing so, this dissertation aims at questioning the prevailing historiography of the 1790s in Ireland, by replacing it in its context of revolutionary synergies and by exploring the concept of the Atlantic Republic, thereby offering a new take on the process of popular politicisation in Ireland

Abstract:
As part of the Phenomenological Method used in this dissertation, the research work applied the hermeneutical concepts of bhakti, karma and moksha. Focus was on the role played by the guru, the sadhus and devotees of the Swaminarayan Movement and how they related t~ their religious, ethical and social obligations. Their responses to ethical scriptures were evaluated, especially with a view to determining the extent to which ethical injunctions permeates, enhances, uplifts and shapes the adherents spiritually ,morally and socially. Swaminarayan ethics was also placed within the context of Classical Hindu Texts and in particular, the work of Ramanuja and his Vishistadvaita philosophy. Further, it has been observed that the quest for the Ultimate Reality (Purushottam) is through their relationship with Akshar, Guru Pramukh Swami, the model of ethical excellence whose charisma binds the fibre of the Movement and his role serves both the ethical and transcendental plane of the Movement.

Abstract:
The aim of this diploma thesis was to determine the impact of mycorrhizal fungi on the growth parameters of model vegetable crops. As a model crops were selected Cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.) and Tomato ( Lycopersicon esculetnum Mill.). There were selected these three sorts of arbusko - mycorrhizal fungi to inoculate the medium were the crop seeds were sown: genus Glomus. Glomus claroideum BEG210, Glomus intraradices BEG140 a Glomus mosseae BEG95. The experiment that was conducted on this diploma thesis took place partially in the glasshouse as well as in the climate chamber, both in Horticulture Faculty in Lednice, Mendel University in Brno. The evaluation of treatment impacts was focused on the growth parameters such plant size, the width of the root collar and the leaf area of plants. Besides these parameters was also compared the plants 'weight. The results were statistically analyzed using STATISTICA 12 and are also included in the thesis. From the results we can conclude that the positive effect of mycorrhiza was reflected in both plant size and the weight of above-ground parts, which means an increase in fresh biomass. For these parameters, there were statistically significant differences in compare to control variation. Mycorrhizal treatment had also a positive effect on the growth of leaf area, and thus the photosynthetic apparatus of plants was increased. These results were supported by statistically significant differences compared to the control, as well. So this means that the mycorrhizal treatment has a very positive effect on plants.

Abstract:
The first part of the thesis summarizes the theoretical background elaborated from the literature dealing with the issue of functional plantations in the landscape and extensive management in connection with fruit trees. In addition, field surveys were carried out at the selected locality, which consisted of locality surveys and focused on the current state of existing woody vegetation. By processing the information obtained in the theoretical part and in the field work, variants of the restoration of the old kit at the selected location were proposed. The optimal variant then became the main subject of the second part of the thesis, in which it was further elaborated into modified project documentation for zoning proceedings.

Mannah, Shermain. "The experiences of women leaders in the South African Democratic Teachers' Union (SADTU)." Thesis, 2008. http://hdl.handle.net/10413/469.

Full text
Abstract:
This study answers the critical question: How do women leaders experience gender equality in the South African Democratic Teachers’ Union (SADTU)? It focuses on five women leaders in the union, illuminating their experiences and evolving gender consciousness. This qualitative study addresses a gap in research on gender in teacher unions, to understand and reveal how women who have accessed previously male-dominated spaces experience gender equality. The women leaders’ experiences are a prism through which to understand the “depth” of the substantive experience of gender equality in the union. It examines how the union through its organisational bureaucracy, culture and politics shapes their experiences. Through a historical analysis of the gender and liberation struggle, I demonstrate the trajectory of achievements, challenges and visions for gender equity in South Africa within the trade union movement, noting the achievements and highlighting lost opportunities to advance gender struggles of its members. The study theorises different conceptions of feminisms and imagings of organisations to understand the women’s experiences in relation to the union and to broader society, within the culture, politics and bureaucracy of the organisation. I extended this lens by exploring differing conceptions of feminisms to understand the gendered experiences of the women leaders as they traverse life from childhood to adulthood. Conceived with the broader realm of feminist methodology, I use elements of life history research, notably in-depth interviews to produce narratives in the form of “harmonised poems” to illuminate the public and private experiences of the research participants, providing deep insights into their evolving gender consciousness. The analysis is multi-dimensional, traversing the influence of the family, school, and the historical and political contexts that shaped the women’s gender consciousness. The findings indicate that teachers’ contradictory class location, history of patriarchy and acceptance of sexual division of labour contribute to the women leaders’ experiences of gender inequality in the union. These experiences of inequality were magnified by apartheid’s1 structural and ideological roots, which shaped gender roles while simultaneously catalysing the development of gender consciousness and advancing political activism. In this regard, the family served as a crucial site of gender socialisation, while the school formally reproduced a hierarchical gendered society. At the organisational level, hierarchically bureaucratic structures maintained and reinforced particular patterns of control and power through the formal system of trade union governance in which gender oppression is institutionalised and legitimised under its banner of emancipatory politics. However, women in the organisation are by no means innocent victims of hostile patriarchal forces, but are active participants in their own oppression as they strategically comply with institutional norms. Significantly, the findings indicate that equality of opportunity for women leaders in the union does not translate into equality of outcome. This thesis contributes to the theoretical debates on evolving gendered consciousness by advancing an extended conceptual lens to interrogate women’s gendered experiences in predominantly patriarchal spaces. It identifies four domains of evolving consciousness. Starting with the divided self in the domain of home, girl children imbibe the dominant hierarchical social structures, and fixed gender roles are inscribed here. However, the family domain provides the catalyst for a developing consciousness among the women as children. The socialised self emerging in the domain of the school emphasises the gender socialisation, both overt and covert, that occurs in schools. It illuminates their evolving gender consciousness by resisting such subjugation initially as students and later as radical teachers. Progressing to the domain of the union, the women embody a strategic self in response to gender inequality in SADTU, which often takes an organisational form that contradicts its espoused policy and public pronouncements. Armed with the maturity to transcend their individualised gender consciousness, the women leaders emerge with a collective consciousness determined to break down the barriers to equality at the structural level. Finally, in the emerging collective self, the women simultaneously embody elements that constrain their individual emancipatory impulses while trajecting them to potentially higher levels of consciousness as change agents. Their willingness to embrace a shared consciousness and their call for activism indicate a shift towards heightened collective consciousness. As they move from their individual subjugated selves to their heightened collective, transformed consciousness, they express a compelling desire for collective agency to challenge structural drivers of inequality and enact change at the systemic level.
