Abstract:
This chapter discusses health and safety, as ensuring health and safety is one of the most important functions of management. Health and safety rules are, generally speaking, universal: they cover employees and others in the workplace. Employees have a responsibility to take reasonable care of both themselves and others while at work, and to comply with all relevant laws and regulations pertaining to their work. Employers and managers have a duty to provide a safe working environment, and to ensure that employees are properly trained and have access to all relevant information to enable them to carry out their work without risk to their or others health. It is important to understand the chain of delegation: while it is possible to delegate the authority to a subordinate to deal with health and safety issues, the responsibility itself is not delegated. In this chapter, requirements for health and safety are discussed briefly, with examples.

Abstract:
‘Alarms and Safety Mechanisms’ breaks that puzzling black box, which includes those critical functions designed to safeguard the ventilated patient. It describes the categories of alarms, including application alarms (also called clinical alarms), which may indicate problems with the patient; a leak or occlusion in the breathing circuit; or an improper ventilator setting. It goes on to describe technical alarms that point to an actual malfunction within the ventilator system. It also discusses alarm priorities and alarm settings or alarm limits. The chapter details each common alarm, listing alternative alarm messages as they appear on different ventilators, and describing what the alarm means and how to troubleshoot it. Finally, the chapter discusses a ventilator’s emergency states, such as the ambient state or the safety valve open state, and the ventilator inoperative alarm.

Abstract:
This chapter examines the “rules for engagement” in ballroom dancing by following the trajectory of individuals as they enter the dance hall for the very first time and eventually become good ballroom dancers. It begins with a discussion of local practices at the Regent Ballroom and Banquet Center and how members of this particular local context connect with the more global aspects of ballroom performance. It then considers the importance of safety in the ballroom, first by explaining the obligation to “take care” of one's partner and fellow dancers, along with the convention of sobriety and limiting alcohol consumption during a dance. It also shows how a sense of safety functions not only to generate participation and maintain local communities, but also to provide the necessary components codified to ensure performance on an international scale. It argues that feeling safe to dance without risk of physical harm or social rejection is a first requirement in realizing ballroom's promise of becoming beautiful.
