Abstract:
The composing of new standards in the area of machinery safety is a continuous work which aims at writing standards that works as a tool for companies and enables them to control if the fundamental demands of security and health which is prescribed by law are reached. It is optional for the companies to choose if they want to use the standards. This report is written in cooperation with SIS and the study were performed within the technical committee SIS/TK 282. The report aims to investigating if the companies that choose to use standards see any economic advantages due to this work, how these advantages take form and where they originate. The main question formulation is how the profitability among companies that have adjusted their production to machinery safety standards are affected.   The study was performed with an initial literature study which aimed at obtaining knowledge and an overview over the subject as well as investigate what former studies had resulted in. Thereafter a poll where executed among the participants in SIS/TK 282 and from this group an unit for observations were chosen for later interviews.   Among the effects that were observed in the study it is worth to mention that standards contribute to harmonising laws in Europe and the work with composing standards therefore benefit the free market and possibilities for the companies to export their goods. Due to an increased focus on the international standards the work with composing new standards has become a global network. The companies that engage themselves in this work can contribute and affect in what direction the new standards are going and through this work they can benefit their own products. Through this they can gain an advantage over their rival companies.      A systematic work with composing new standards also works as a tool to help companies to reach their goals in safety. Also standards can generate a decrease in absence due to illness and the risk that an accident occurs. The responsibilities among the personnel is increased and the standards connect personnel – managerial staff – prescriptions from the law which can create an increased comfort in the workplace. This in turn can create an increased quality of the products and better reliability of delivery. The use of standards can also help the company to detect the underlying reasons for problems in the production and through this reach less discontinues in the production and an increased accessibility to the machines.   There emerged a number of factors in the study that indicates that it is profitable for a company to adopt to standards and to actively participate in the development of new standards.

Abstract:
Development of manipulators that interact closely with humans has been a focus of research in fields such as robot-assisted surgery The recent introduction of powered surgical-assistant devices into the operating theatre has meant that modified industrial robot manipulators have been required to interact with both patient and surgeon Some of these robots require the surgeon to grasp the end-effector and apply a force while the joint actuators provide resistance to motion In the operating theatre, the use of high-powered mechanisms to perform these tasks could compromise the safety of the patient, surgeon and operating room staff. In this investigation, a two degrees-of-freedom (2-DoF) manipulator is designed for the purpose of following a pre-defined path under the direct control of the surgeon.

The article identifies the challenges during the system and specifically the software development process for safety critical electro-hydraulic control systems by using the example of the hydrostatic driveline with a four speed transmission of a feeder mixer. An optimized development approach for mobile machinery has to fulfill all the requirements according to the Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC, considering functional safety, documentation and testing requirements from the beginning and throughout the entire machine life cycle. The functionality of the drive line control could be verified in advance of the availability of a prototype by using a “software-in-the-loop” development approach, based on a MATLAB/SIMULINK model of the drive line in connection with the embedded software.

Abstract:
China currently occupies the world’s leading Electric bicycle (e-bike) market. However, the popularity of e-bikes is accompanied by massive numbers of injuries and deaths due to accidents involving e-bikes. As a result, the safety of e-bikes has recently received much attention from the public and the government and researchers have concentrated on improving the safety features of e-bikes with innovative technologies. It has been shown that well-designed protective shells can protect a driver involved in an e-bike accident. However, there is a lack of criteria on which to base the design of an effective protective shell for e-bikes. Therefore, this research focuses on the development of a design criterion based on the specific case of Roly-Poly stability. This stability criterion can be formulated for one curved surface as r > h, which is in a stable stability configuration - one of a number of static stability configurations. In this study, static stabilities are configured based on knowledge of potential energy (PE). In order to verify the design criteria, three types of protective shells are designed with different stability conditions. The first type follows the design criterion (r > h), while the remaining two do not (r = h and r < h). A finite element model of an e-bike is constructed with key components, such as the main frame, CoM (the position of which is obtained by a plumb line experiment), and the designed protective shells. The meshed models are produced and employed to determine the contact parameters using the frictionless penalty method. The corresponding results of sideways falling simulation successfully demonstrate the validity of the design criterion.

Abstract : The IEC 61508 standard series defined a framework for quantification of functional safety. For each particular industry sector, specific standards are being developed based on it. This framework is well suited for electrical and electronic components. However, in the field of machinery, control systems are realized not only by such components, but also by mechanical, pneumatic and hydraulic components, which exhibit a different failure behavior. Such components are considered by the ISO 13849 standard. However, quantification methods of this standard are still not quite well understood by the users, and have strong limitations. This work presents a study an alternative method of how to calculate the average frequency of dangerous failures (PFH), required by ISO 13849 in order to achieve a Performance Level (PL). This alternative method includes modeling safety functions as Reliability Block Diagram and evaluation of PFH using the software BlockSim, through Discrete Event Simulation. Modeling hypothesis and limitations are discussed. The proposed method enables calculation of the standard s cases, as well as consideration of different failure distributions, of which Weibull distribution is considered. A study case considering Weibull distributed failures is presented. Applicability of the method is also discussed.

Abstract:
The problem addressed in this thesis is the detection, localisation and tracking of human workers from mobile industrial machinery using a customised vision system developed at Örebro University. Coined the RefleX Vision System, its hardware configuration and computer vision algorithms were specifically designed for real-world industrial scenarios where workers are required to wear protective high-visibility garments with retro-reflective markers. The demand for robust industry-purpose human sensing methods originates from the fact that many industrial environments represent work spaces that are shared between humans and mobile machinery. Typical examples of such environments include construction sites, surface and underground mines, storage yards and warehouses. Here, accidents involving mobile equipment and human workers frequently result in serious injuries and fatalities. Robust sensor-based detection of humans in the surrounding of mobile equipment is therefore an active research topic and represents a crucial requirement for safe vehicle operation and accident prevention in increasingly automated production sites. Addressing the described safety issue, this thesis presents a collection of papers which introduce, analyse and evaluate a novel vision-based method for detecting humans equipped with protective high-visibility garments in the neighbourhood of manned or unmanned industrial vehicles. The thesis provides a comprehensive discussion of the numerous aspects regarding the design of the hardware and the computer vision algorithms that constitute the vision system. An active nearinfrared camera setup that is customised for the robust perception of retroreflective markers builds the basis for the sensing method. Using its specific input, a set of computer vision and machine learning algorithms then perform extraction, analysis, classification and localisation of the observed reflective patterns, and eventually detection and tracking of workers with protective garments. Multiple real-world challenges, which existing methods frequently struggle to cope with, are discussed throughout the thesis, including varying ambient lighting conditions and human body pose variation. The presented work has been carried out with a strong focus on industrial applicability, and therefore includes an extensive experimental evaluation in a number of different real-world indoor and outdoor work environments.

Abstract:
Active safety systems for road vehicles make a crucial preventive contribution to road safety. In recent years, technological developments and the increasing demand for road safety have resulted in the integration and cooperation of these individual active safety systems. Traction control system (TCS) is one of these individual systems, which is capable of inhibiting wheel-spin during acceleration of the vehicle on slippery surfaces. In this thesis, design methodology and simulation results of a traction control system for four wheeled road vehicles are presented. The objective of the TCS controller is basically to improve directional stability, steer-ability and acceleration performance of vehicle by controlling the wheel slip during acceleration. In this study, the designed traction control system based on fuzzy logic is composed of an engine torque controller and a slip controller. Reference wheel slip values were estimated from the longitudinal acceleration data of the vehicle. Engine torque controller determines the throttle opening angle corresponding to the desired wheel torque, which is determined by a slip controller to track the reference slip signals. The wheel torques delivered by the engine are compensated by brake torques according to the desired wheel torque determined by the slip controller. Performance of the TCS controller was analyzed through several simulations held in MATLAB/Simulink for different road conditions during straight line acceleration and combined acceleration and steering. For simulations, an 8 DOF nonlinear vehicle model with nonlinear tires and a 2 DOF nonlinear engine model were built.

BillerudKorsnäs AB (BK) in Gävle is one of the world-leading companies in the manufacture of liquid board. To continue to be a leading company, they work daily with improvement proposals to develop and increase the factory's safety and availability. This thesis contains one of many improvement proposals in the department, Lut och Kraft. BillerudKorsnäs AB has a clear desire to remedy a known problem that can lead to devastating financial consequences.  The degree project has consisted of introducing an automatic cooling sequence of the lime kiln, with a focus area on safety and programming. Security is a broad area and the tasks have been limited to automation-related tasks to stay within the time frame of ten weeks. To maintain the same continuity and standard at BK, the programming has been based on using the current programming script function block diagram in the control system AC450 from ABB.  The method that has been used in the work is action research that included planning, risk analysis and documentation to minimize and eliminate possible risks, related to personal safety and machine equipment.  The goal of the degree project was to have a functional, safe, and reliable cooling sequence. To optimize the process, relieve the process operator and improve the working environment in the control room by automating a work step. The simulation has shown that the function of the cooling sequence fulfills the BK desire. Due to a factory shutdown during the degree project's time frame, commissioning has been delayed and the test drive has been moved forward.

This article proposes an approach named SafeML II, which applies empirical cumulative distribution function-based statistical distance measures in a designed human-in-the loop procedure to ensure the safety of machine learning-based classifiers in autonomous vehicle software. The application of artificial intelligence (AI) and data-driven decision-making systems in autonomous vehicles is growing rapidly. As autonomous vehicles operate in dynamic environments, the risk that they can face an unknown observation is relatively high due to insufficient training data, distributional shift, or cyber-security attack. Thus, AI-based algorithms should make dependable decisions to improve their interpretation of the environment, lower the risk of autonomous driving, and avoid catastrophic accidents. This paper proposes an approach named SafeML II, which applies empirical cumulative distribution function (ECDF)-based statistical distance measures in a designed human-in-the-loop procedure to ensure the safety of machine learning-based classifiers in autonomous vehicle software. The approach is model-agnostic and it can cover various machine learning and deep learning classifiers. The German Traffic Sign Recognition Benchmark (GTSRB) is used to illustrate the capabilities of the proposed approach.

Abstract:
Active vehicle safety systems for road vehicles play an important role in accident prevention. In recent years, rapid developments have been observed in this area with advancing technology and electronic control systems. Active yaw control is one of these subjects, which aims to control the vehicle in case of any impending spinning or plowing during rapid and/or sharp maneuver. In addition to the development of these systems, integration and cooperation of these independent control mechanisms constitutes the current trend in active vehicle safety systems design. In this thesis, design methodology and simulation results of an active yaw control system for two axle road vehicles have been presented. Main objective of the yaw control system is to estimate the desired yaw behavior of the vehicle according to the demand of the driver and track this desired behavior accurately. The design procedure follows a progressive method, which first aims to design the yaw control scheme without regarding any other stability parameters, followed by the development of the designed control scheme via taking other stability parameters such vehicle sideslip angle into consideration. A two degree of freedom vehicle model (commonly known as &ldquo
Bicycle Model&rdquo
) is employed to model the desired vehicle behavior. The design of the controller is based on Fuzzy Logic Control, which has proved itself useful for complex nonlinear design problems. Afterwards, the proposed yaw controller has been modified in order to limit the vehicle sideslip angle as well. Integration of the designed active yaw control system with other safety systems such as Anti-Lock Braking System (ABS) and Traction Control System (TCS) is another subject of this study. A fuzzy logic based wheel slip controller has also been included in the study in order to integrate two different independent active systems to each other, which, in fact, is a general design approach for real life applications. This integration actually aims to initiate and develop the integration procedure of the active yaw control system with the (ABS). An eight degree of freedom detailed vehicle model with nonlinear tire model is utilized to represent the real vehicle in order to ensure the validity of the results. The simulation is held in MATLAB/Simulink environment, which has provided versatile design and simulation capabilities for this study. Wide-ranging simulations include various maneuvers with different road conditions have been performed in order to demonstrate the performance of the proposed controller.

Abstract:
Machine Learning, and in particular Deep Learning, are extremely capable tools for solving problems which are difficult, or intractable to tackle analytically. Application areas include pattern recognition, computer vision, speech and natural language processing. With the automotive industry aiming for increasing amount of automation in driving, the problems to solve become increasingly complex, which appeals to the use of supervised learning methods from Machine Learning and Deep Learning. With this approach, solutions to the problems are learned implicitly from training data, and inspecting their correctness is not possible directly. This presents concerns when the resulting systems are used to support safety-critical functions, as is the case with autonomous driving of automotive vehicles. This thesis studies the safety concerns related to learning systems within autonomous driving and applies a safety monitoring approach to a collision avoidance scenario. Experiments are performed using a simulated environment, with a deep learning system supporting perception for vehicle control, and a safety monitor for collision avoidance. The related operational situations and safety constraints are studied for an autonomous driving function, with potential faults in the learning system introduced and examined. Also, an example is considered for a measure that indicates trustworthiness of the learning system during operation.

Full text
Abstract:
This work presents optimizations for modern capability machines and specifically for the CHERI architecture, a 64-bit MIPS instruction set extension for security, supporting fine-grained memory protection through hardware-enforced capabilities. The original CHERI model uses 256-bit capabilities to carry information required for various checks helping to enforce memory safety, leading to increased memory bandwidth requirements and cache pressure when using CHERI capabilities in place of conventional 64-bit pointers. In order to mitigate this cost, I present two new 128-bit CHERI capability formats, using different compression techniques, while preserving C-language compatibility lacking in previous pointer compression schemes. I explore the trade-offs introduced by these new formats over the 256-bit format. I produce an implementation in the L3 ISA modeling language, collaborate on the hardware implementation, and provide an evaluation of the mechanism. Another cost related to CHERI capabilities is the memory traffic increase due to capability-validity tags: to provide unforgeable capabilities, CHERI uses a tagged memory that preserves validity tags for every 256-bit memory word in a shadowspace inaccessible to software. The CHERI hardware implementation of this shadowspace uses a capability-validity-tag table in memory and caches it at the end of the cache hierarchy. To efficiently implement such a shadowspace and improve on CHERI’s current approach, I use sparse data structures in a hierarchical tag-cache that filters unnecessary memory accesses. I present an in-depth study of this technique through a Python implementation of the hierarchical tag-cache, and also provide a hardware implementation and evaluation. I find that validity-tag traffic is reduced for all applications and scales with tag use. For legacy applications that do not use tags, there is near zero overhead. Removing these costs through the use of the proposed optimizations makes the CHERI architecture more affordable and appealing for industrial adoption.

Abstract:
In order to reduce bicycle-vehicle collisions, we design and implement a cost effectiveembedded system to warn cyclists of approaching vehicles. The system uses an Odroid C2 singleboard computer (SBC) to do vehicle and lane detection in real time using only vision. The system warns cyclist are warned of approaching cars using both a smartphone app and an LED indicator. Due to the limited performance of the Odroid C2 and other low power and low cost SBCs,we found that existing detection algorithms run either too slowly or do not have sufficient accuracy to be practical. Our solution to these limitations is to create a custom fully convolutional network(FCN) which is small enough to run at real time speeds on the Odroid C2 but robust enough tohave decent accuracy. We show that this FCN runs significantly faster than Tiny YOLOv3 andMobileNetv2 while getting similar accuracy when all are trained on a limited dataset. Since no dataset exists that separates the fronts of vehicles from other poses and is in the context of city and country roads, we create our own. Creating a dataset to train any detector hastraditionally been time consuming. We present and implement a way to efficiently do this usingminimal hand annotation by generating semi-synthetic images by cropping relatively few positive images into many background images. This creates a wider background class variance than wouldotherwise be possible.

Mahmud, Nidhal. "Dynamic model-based safety analysis : from state machines to temporal fault trees." Thesis, University of Hull, 2012. http://hydra.hull.ac.uk/resources/hull:6757.

Full text
Abstract:
Finite state transition models such as State Machines (SMs) have become a prevalent paradigm for the description of dynamic systems. Such models are well-suited to modelling the behaviour of complex systems, including in conditions of failure, and where the order in which failures and fault events occur can affect the overall outcome (e.g. total failure of the system). For the safety assessment though, the SM failure behavioural models need to be converted to analysis models like Generalised Stochastic Petri Nets (GSPNs), Markov Chains (MCs) or Fault Trees (FTs). This is particularly important if the transformed models are supported by safety analysis tools. This thesis, firstly, identifies a number of problems encountered in current safety analysis techniques based on SMs. One of the existing approaches consists of transforming the SMs to analysis-supported state-transition formalisms like GSPNs or MCs, which are very powerful in capturing the dynamic aspects and in the evaluation of safety measures. But in this approach, qualitative analysis is not encouraged; here the focus is primarily on probabilistic analysis. Qualitative analysis is particularly important when probabilistic data are not available (e.g., at early stages of design). In an alternative approach though, the generation of combinatorial, Boolean FTs has been applied to SM-based models. FTs are well-suited to qualitative analysis, but cannot capture the significance of the temporal order of events expressed by SMs. This makes the approach potentially error prone for the analysis of dynamic systems. In response, we propose a new SM-based safety analysis technique which converts SMs to Temporal Fault Trees (TFTs) using Pandora — a recent technique for introducing temporal logic to FTs. Pandora provides a set of temporal laws, which allow the significance of the SM temporal semantics to be preserved along the logical analysis, and thereby enabling a true qualitative analysis of a dynamic system. The thesis develops algorithms for conversion of SMs to TFTs. It also deals with the issue of scalability of the approach by proposing a form of compositional synthesis in which system large TFTs can be generated from individual component SMs using a process of composition. This has the dual benefits of allowing more accurate analysis of different sequences of faults, and also helping to reduce the cost of performing temporal analysis by producing smaller, more manageable TFTs via the compositionality. The thesis concludes that this approach can potentially address limitations of earlier work and thus help to improve the safety analysis of increasingly complex dynamic safety-critical systems.

Black box machine learning methods have allowed researchers to design accurate models using large amounts of data at the cost of interpretability. Model interpretability not only improves user buy-in, but in many cases provides users with important information. Especially in the case of the classification problems addressed in this thesis, the ideal model should not only provide accurate predictions, but should also inform users of how features affect the results. My research goal is to solve real-world problems and compare how different classification models affect the outcomes and interpretability. To this end, this thesis is divided into two parts: food safety risk analysis and human trafficking detection. The first half analyzes the characteristics of supermarket suppliers in China that indicate a high risk of food safety violations. Contrary to expectations, supply chain dispersion, internal inspections, and quality certification systems are not found to be predictive of food safety risk in our data. The second half focuses on identifying human trafficking, specifically sex trafficking, advertisements hidden amongst online classified escort service advertisements. We propose a novel but interpretable keyword detection and modeling pipeline that is more accurate and actionable than current neural network approaches. The algorithms and applications presented in this thesis succeed in providing users with not just classifications but also the characteristics that indicate food safety risk and human trafficking ads.
