Abstract:
Judgements about whether it is safe to use TENS are guided by whether it has the potential to increase the likelihood of an adverse event. Hazards associated with using TENS need to be assessed against risks of using other available treatments including drug medication, and patients need to be informed of these hazards to provide valid consent to treatment. In many instances TENS evaluates favourably. The decision to offer TENS to a patient is based on professional judgement of practitioner informed by research evidence, safety guidelines by professional bodies, and clinical experience. The purpose of this chapter is to consider contraindications, precautions, and adverse events associated with TENS, by discussing national safety guidelines, contraindications to TENS, including device implants and pre-existing conditions, hazardous electrode sites, and adverse reactions.

Abstract:
Working with the arts in health care can present a range of challenges and areas of sensitivity. This chapter considers some of the most important protocols when working in health. This includes crucial issues around patient safeguarding, such as codes of conduct for working with patients and the public, patient confidentiality, ways of flagging causes for concern, and considerations when undertaking photography or filming. It also looks at important aspects of health and safety, including standard infection control precautions, risk assessments, and occupational health. Finally, the chapter explores how to engage patients, public, and staff in interventions to provide a safe and friendly environment.

Full text
Abstract:
Complementary therapies are modalities that are not traditionally part of Western medical care. Some of these therapies have demonstrated a favourable benefit:risk ratio in recent research and many can be incorporated into a multimodality pain management plan. In general, complementary therapies reduce pain by interfering with the processing of pain signals or lessen the impact of pain on the patient’s emotional state. Mind-body therapies, such as hypnosis, meditation, yoga/qigong, and music therapy, can reduce anxiety, depression, and stress-all common in patients experiencing pain. Acupuncture appears to have direct analgesic effects and reduce nausea and vomiting, which are potential side effects from opioid therapy. Massage therapy may reduce anxiety, and to a lesser degree, depression and pain. Complementary therapies are generally safe when provided by trained practitioners, although certain safety precautions still need to be exercised. The origin of pain, the factors complicating it, burdens and risks to patient, and each patient’s belief system and cultural background should all be considered when selecting from among the complementary modalities for pain.

Brown, David W. G. Herpes B virus (Cercopithecine Herpes 1). Oxford University Press, 2011. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/med/9780198570028.003.0036.

Full text
Abstract:
Herpes B virus or Cercopithecine herpes 1 as it is formally classified causes a persistent infection of monkeys of the Macaca genus. In monkey colonies and social groups, it is transmitted by close contact and sexually. Human infection is rare with less than 50 human cases described it has been seen in monkey handlers exposed to infected monkeys following bites, scratches and abraded skin. Infection has also been recognized in two cases following exposure through laboratory work. Following an incubation period of 9-59 days typically an ascending encephalomyelitis develops which is fatal in 80% of cases. Prevention and control of the risk of B virus is based on avoiding direct contact with infected animals by screening, following handling guidelines for monkeys used in biomedical research and rigorous laboratory safety precautions. Treatment with acyclovir has been successful and halved mortality in recent cases. It is also recommended for prophylaxis in potential exposures.
