Abstract:
In this article, I discuss how masculinity is constructed in Old Icelandic Egils saga and Njáls saga through various kinds of unmanliness (impotence, lack of facial hair, baldness, effeminacy, cowardice, old age). Both sagas demonstrate the restrictiveness of gender roles in medieval Iceland and how men become their captives. The ideal of masculinity is so exaggerated that it becomes oppressive, because everything may be used against men. It leads to failed marriages and feuds. However, Egils saga’s and Njáls saga’s treatment of gender is critical.

Abstract:
This paper examines the potential historical value of the Nart Sagas, a cycle of North Caucasian folk epics. It discusses the methodological problems in dating them, and especially in treating them as a corpus of entirely ancient date. In response, the author proposes the use of a ‘rhizomatic’ approach: treating the surviving sagas as unique, ‘frozen’ performances, which concentrate a number of strands, some of which may lead into other extant parallel texts. To test this theory, it is applied to a single saga, the tale of the hero Shoshlan’s journey to the underworld, and this saga’s apparent parallels with Sarmatian art and with early mediaeval Christian Apocalypse Literature. The paper concludes with a summary of how this method can be more widely applied, through the use of thematic analogy.

AbstractThis paper looks at how ethnicity as an aspect of personhood is ‘performed’ among academics and musicians in the contemporary southern Siberian Republic of Khakassia, which is a member of the Russian Federation. It gives a nineteenth-century assessment of musical ethnicity among the Abakan Tatars (i.e. Kachins, Sagais, Bel’tirs, Kyzyls and Koibals), describes the introduction during the Soviet period of the ethnonym ‘Khakas’ through the academic arena, and outlines the controversy that still rages in overlapping academic and musical circles over this and its contemporary divisions. Finally, the paper points to the recent move by musicians to contest their official ‘Khakas’ identities by copying onto their instruments ancient Okunev art from standing stones that litter their steppes, and to reaffirm their Sagai, Khaas and Kyzyl ethnicities by reinstating the traditional inheritance of epic performance among these groups and by differentiating between their musical styles.

Mytologi, historie og kristendom hos N. F. S. Grundtvig, Copenhagen, 2005]By Thorkild C. LybyThe article gives a short account of Sune Auken’s published doctoral thesis, Sagas spejl. Mytologi, historie og kristendom hos N. F. S. Grundtvig [Saga’s mirror. Mythology, history and Christianity in N. F. S. Grundtvig] in which he investigates Gr’s preoccupation with Norse mythology and its relationship to history and Christianity. In Auken’s view Norse mythology during the years 1806-10 became something like an actual religion for Gr, a basis for an entire concept of life. As he could not give up traditional Christianity, he was forced to try to harmonise it with Christianity. In this attempt he failed, which was the main reason of his mental breakdown in 1810. After 1815 he did not work theoretically with the myths, but in his poetry they still played an important role. Not until 1832 was a sort of harmony established between his theoretical and his poetic relationship to the myths.Furthermore, the article gives a short account of the public examination on 3 June 2005, when Auken defended his thesis. The contributions of the different opponents at this occasion are mentioned.Finally, the author elaborates his own contribution as the third opponent. Two points are discussed: (a) What did Gr mean by the expression “the image of God”? (b) Is Auken’s view of Norse mythology as an alternative religion justified? Would it not be better to characterize it as “quasi-religious” than to label it “a religion”?

Abstract:
The study of urban geography has primarily focused on large cities, but geographic trends affecting smaller urban areas also merit the attention of researchers. The local economies of smaller municipalities in Japan, for example, have been more seriously damaged by the recession of the last decade than the economies of larger cities. Typically, store vacancies have increased in small cities as a result of the recession. Moreover, the population of small cities is aging rapidly, obscuring their prospects for the future. This paper examines the outcome of changes in the case of the small city of Saga, Ja-pan, with particular attention to the decline of its urban center and its unsuccessful efforts at downtown revitalization. As the center of Saga Prefecture in southwestern Japan, the city of Saga performs communication, education, administrative, and cultural functions that are significant in the local and regional economy. As in other small cities in Japan, the down-town of Saga has declined with the regional economy in recent years. The outlook for Saga's urban environment is serious, with increasing urban problems anticipated. In re-sponse, downtown revitalization and redevelopment efforts have been undertaken, but these have been unsuccessful. This study concludes that a lack of both public participation and clear policy purpose were contributing factors in the failure of Saga’s revitalization efforts.

Abstract:
Vår studie går ut på att få en inblick i hur pedagogerna arbetar med sagan för att främja barns utveckling. Vi utgår från följande frågeställningar; Hur ser relationen mellan sagor och barns utveckling ut i förskolans teori och praktik samt hur förhåller sig pedagogerna gentemot barnen vid sagoarbetet? I studien belyser vi tidigare forskning kring sagoarbete för att få en ökad kunskap och förståelse för sagans inverkan i verksamheten och för barnens utveckling. De teoretiska utgångspunkter som legat till grund för vår studie är socialisation, empati, metasamtal och det kompetenta barnet. De metodval vi grundar studien på är intervjuer och observationer. Vi diskuterar begränsningar och studiens trovärdighet. I resultatet belyser vi de observationer och intervjuer vi utfört. Vårt resultat visar på att sagan är av stor betydelse i verksamheterna. Pedagogerna är överens om att sagan används som ett hjälpmedel för att främja barnens olika förmågor. Under våra observationer fick vi ta del av tre sagosamlingar som hölls av tre olika pedagoger som var utbildade förskollärare. De gestaltade sagan och hade ett gemensamt syfte som var att främja barnens empatiska förmåga. I vår diskussion analyserar och problematiserar vi det material som vi under studiens gång har arbetat fram.

Abstract:
Syftet med examensarbetet har varit att se sagans betydelse för ett barn i förskoleålderns språkliga utveckling. Syftet var även att undersöka hur pedagogers och föräldrars engagemang kan bidra.  Metoden som använts i examensarbetet är en kvalitativ undersökning på två förskolor med olika förutsättningar. Därefter har sedan jämförts likheter och skillnader mellan hur barnen tagit till sig av sagans ord och mening. Det har även gjorts enkätundersökningar där föräldrar och pedagoger har fått ge sin syn på hur de upplever att barn påverkas och utvecklas av sagor. Bland svaren har bl.a. pedagoger bidragit till examensarbetet med olika idéer på hur man kan locka barn till sagoläsning på ett pedagogiskt sätt. Det har genomgående under arbetets gång visat sig hur sagans betydelse, och flera olika roller, påverkar barnets språkliga utveckling men även hur sagan påverkar barnets självkänsla, trygghet, koncentration, nyfikenhet och fantasi. Det som lärts är vikten av att vara tydlig  likväl mot enspråkiga barn som flerspråkiga barn och att pedagogen är observant på att uppfatta barnets förståelse språkligt.

Vi har valt att studera hur sagoläsning främjar barns språkutveckling i

förskolan. Vårt syfte med uppsatsen är att ta reda på om och hur pedagoger

använder sig av sagor för att främja barns språkutveckling. För att ta reda på

detta har vi intervjuat fyra förskollärare på fyra olika förskolor. De

frågeställningar som vi utgått från är: I vilket syfte används sagan i förskolan?

Anses sagan som ett viktigt hjälpmedel för att främja barns språkutveckling

och hur arbetar pedagogerna i förskolan med sagan för att främja barns

språkutveckling?

Det ämne vi har valt att studera tar vi upp i forskningsbakgrunden, där olika

forskare och vetenskapsmän ger sina åsikter och tankar om sagan som

hjälpmedel för att främja barns språkutveckling. Vi har sammanställt våra

intervjuer i en resultat del och analyserat de sammanställda svaren vi fått efter

genomförda intervjuer. De flesta pedagoger vi intervjuade är överens om att

sagan utvecklar barns språk med hjälp av texternas varierande språk och ord,

likaså samtalet och diskussionen om sagans innehåll framhölls som positivt

och viktigt för barns förståelse för sagans innehåll. Samtliga pedagoger anser

att sagan är ett viktigt moment för att stilla och lugna barngruppen.

En dag frågade jag mig vad sagan kan betyda för barnets andliga utveckling. Andlighet är för mig förmåga att känna kärlek, att kunna ge utan egen vinning samt att se något utöver det synliga. Andlig utveckling och personlighetsutveckling hör ihop. Därför såg jag mig omkring i min hemstad Nyköping för att ta reda på vilka sagor barn i åldern tre till sex år kan ha glädje av för sin personlighetsutveckling. Barn har mindre kunskaper och erfarenheter än vuxna. De kan inte alltid uttrycka vad de känner. När orden inte räcker till för att uttrycka känslorna kan symboler vara till hjälp. De symbolerna kommer barnen i kontakt med via sagorna. Sagornas symboler kan också vara en förenande länk mellan länder och olika kulturer. Gamla folksagor har ett djupt och meningsfullt innehåll som förmedlat livsvisdom över de geografiska gränserna i generationer. Med hjälp av sagan kan barnet förstå och hantera sina känslor. Nyare sagor är anpassade till den tid barnet växer upp i. Både gamla och nya sagor kan ge barnet trygghet, framtidstro och glädje.

Sagan kan ge svar på barns funderingar över livsfrågor. Barn behöver få känna att de kan själva och att de kan påverka sitt eget liv. Det är viktigt att inte skynda på barnets utveckling. Man ska svara på frågorna vartefter barnet självt ställer dem. En bra saga ska vara lite spännande, gärna rolig. Barnet ska kunna identifiera sig med handlingen. Det onda och det goda ska mötas och det goda ska segra. Sagan ska ge barnet upplevelser. Sagor får inte vara så otäcka att de ger mardrömmar. Barnet måste kunna förstå rädslan och bearbeta den.

Varje sagofigur är väldigt endimensionell för att barnet ska förstå figurens handlingar och reaktioner och därmed sig självt. Barn måste få bekräftelse på att deras känslor är respekterade för att kunna förstå andras känslor. Denna bekräftelse får barnet delvis genom sagorna som också visar barnet hur en större klarhet över verkligheten kan växa fram ur fantasin. Barn gillar magi på grund av att de har ett animistiskt tänkande. De upplever världsordningen utifrån föräldrarna och vad som sker i hemmet. Sagor kan minska rädsla och fördomar. Fantasin gör att barnet har lätt för att leva sig in i andra människors känslor. Det barn som tror på sagans sanning vågar också tro på att en ny kamrat som barnet är osäkert på och därför lite skrämt av med tiden kan förvandlas till en god vän.

Det bästa med sagor är att de kan användas för att uttrycka sig på olika sätt. Barn gillar sagor med lyckliga slut som de kan identifiera sig med och som innehåller vardagliga händelser, humor, spänning och magi. Genom att lyssna, samtala, måla, dramatisera och musicera sagan får barnet tillgång till hela sin personlighet och genom upplevelserna sagan ger sker också en andlig utveckling.

Abstract:
Syftet med följande arbete är att ta reda på hur pedagoger arbetar med sagor i förskolan och skolans tidigare år. Vår undersökning baseras på kvalitativa intervjuer som genomfördes med sex pedagoger verksamma i förskolan och skolans tidigare år. Utgångspunkten i denna undersökning är Vygotskij utvecklingsteori. De pedagoger som vi har intervjuat har olika syn på sagans betydelse, men samtliga håller med om att det är väldigt viktigt att läsa för barnen. I resultatet kan man bland annat urskilja att pedagogerna anser att sagor är kulturarv och att genom sagor får barnen ett rikt ordförråd. Resultatet av vår studie visar att sagor kan användas som hjälpmedel för att utveckla barnens språk. Det viktigaste målet för pedagoger som arbetar i förskolan är att barnen ska lära sig lyssna och sitta lite längre stunder. Vi anser att pedagogers arbetssätt med sagor är avgörande för hur barnen utvecklar sin nyfikenhet och lust att lära.
The purpose of this study is to find out how teachers work with stories in preschools and schools in previous years. Our study is based on qualitative interviews conducted with six teachers working in preschool and school years earlier. The premise of this study is Vygotsky development theory. The teachers we have interviewed have different views on the importance of the tale, but all agree that it is very important to read to children. The result, scientists can discern that the teachers think that stories are cultural heritage and, through fairy tales, children get a rich vocabulary. The results of our study show that fairy tales can be used as a tool for developing children's language. The main objective for educators working in preschool is that children should learn to listen and sit a bit longer periods. We believe that educators working with stories is crucial to how children develop their curiosity and desire to learn.

Abstract:
Sea surface waves had been observed remotely by using a continuous wave (CW) X-band microwave Doppler radar at the off Hitatsuka of Sagami-bay in Japan. A new algorithm was applied to retrieve sea surface elevation from radar output Doppler signals. The sea surface waves observed by the microwave Doppler radar had been compared with the waves measured by a supersonic wave height meter. There were good correlations in both the wave height and the wave period between the waves observed by the microwave Doppler radar and that measured by a supersonic wave height meter. The correlation of wave heights was better than that of wave periods. The microwave irradiation width on sea surface does a role of space filter. It seems that the filtering effect is a kind of aliasing, the energy of short wavelength waves moves to low wave number region. The algorithm to retrieve a sea surface elevation is described by the relation of the water surface elevation and the orbital velocity of water particle on water surface that generated by water surface waves. A linear superposition method has been used to retrieve sea surface elevation. No empirical parameters are used in the algorithm, because the water surface elevation can be obtained from the water particle velocity on water surface by using the mathematical relation of the water surface elevation and the orbital motion of water particle. Water particle motion on sea surface is affected by sea surface wind, currents, and sea surface waves. Water particle motion generated by sea surface waves can be separated by the difference of the fluctuation scale of each physical process.
