Abstract:
Abstract The goal of this study is to simulate the displacement waveforms of 8 sec-period Love waves observed at Tokyo and Yokohama stations in the Kanto sedimentary basin during the Izu-hanto-toho-oki Earthquake of 29 June 1980 (M0 = 7 × 1025 dyne · cm). The surface wave Gaussian beam method is applied for this purpose. On the basis of the 3-D seismic velocity and density structure of the Kanto basin and assuming that the earth medium is laterally homogeneous outside the Kanto basin, waveforms of Love waves are synthesized. The synthesized seismograms underestimate the observed peak amplitudes at Yokohama station. This is primarily because the station is located in the direction of the nodal plane of the Love-wave radiation. As indicated by Yamanaka et al. (1992), a Quaternary basin exists in the Sagami Bay between the source location and the Kanto basin. We include the Sagami basin in our model by the approximation of a circular low-velocity region. Excellent agreement between observed and synthesized waveforms was achieved not only for amplitude but also for phase for the early parts of the wave trains at both stations. We conclude that the low velocity Quaternary basin in the Sagami Bay acts like a lens to focus surface wave energy resulting in high amplitudes. The later arriving waves, in particular the long duration observed at Tokyo station, however, cannot be adequately explained by this method. One possible reason for the failure of simulating the later phases is that this method disregards the secondary Love waves converted from S-waves and/or surface waves at a laterally discontinuous boundary. Although the surface wave Gaussian beam method cannot adequately predict the duration of observed seismograms, it provides us with a satisfactory prediction of amplitudes and phases for early arrivals in laterally slowly-varying media at drastically lower computation costs and less memory requirements than does other methods.

Abstract:
AbstractThe generation of trapped and radiating internal tides around Izu‐Oshima Island located off Sagami Bay, Japan, is investigated using the three-dimensional Stanford Unstructured Nonhydrostatic Terrain-following Adaptive Navier–Stokes Simulator (SUNTANS) that is validated with observations of isotherm displacements in shallow water. The model is forced by barotropic tides, which generate strong baroclinic internal tides in the study region. Model results showed that when diurnal K1 barotropic tides dominate, resonance of a trapped internal Kelvin wave leads to large-amplitude internal tides in shallow waters on the coast. This resonance produces diurnal motions that are much stronger than the semidiurnal motions. The weaker, freely propagating, semidiurnal internal tides are generated on the western side of the island, where the M2 internal tide beam angle matches the topographic slope. The internal wave energy flux due to the diurnal internal tides is much higher than that of the semidiurnal tides in the study region. Although the diurnal internal tide energy is trapped, this study shows that steepening of the Kelvin waves produces high-frequency internal tides that radiate from the island, thus acting as a mechanism to extract energy from the diurnal motions.

Spawning habitats of sardine and anchovy in eastern boundary systems are characterized in an attempt to understand the fluctuations observed in their abundance. These species have developed mechanisms that enable them to survive in these turbulent conditions. Spawning habitats were characterized by investigating the relationships between egg abundance and environmental data collected through two different survey programmes: SW APEL surveys (1978 -1985) and Nansen surveys (1999 - 2004). Single factor quotient techniques were used to define the selection of environmental conditions by these species for spawning.

Abstract:
Abstract: Small and Micro-Enterprises (SMEs) are known to form significant nodes inrural-Urban linkages. Consequently, these SMEs serve as strong nodes which link thesurrounding rural areas to Local, National and Regional Markets through forward andbackward linkages. By strengthening and opening up opportunities for SMEs ‘virtuous’circles of rural-Urban economic linkages are created. The study of the rural-Urban linkages activities is still in development. This thesistherefore seeks to add to the literature by generating and documenting information onthe role of SMEs in small towns in rural-Urban linkages. Kenya is an agricultural-Ledeconomy, hence the need to focus on small mountainous towns. The towns aresurrounded by rich agricultural areas and are highly populated, making them busy hubsof mobility and exchange. Therefore, Mt. Kenya region is the chosen area of study withSMEs in Sagana and Karatina towns chosen as centres representing small towns.Based on the study results, SMEs were found to play an relatively small role in forwardlinkages. Only 12% of goods and services coming to the small towns from the ruralareas were forwarded by the SMEs, and only 25% of these goods found their way toother markets. The study established that some factors such as to the marketing chaincreated by the Famers Sacco’s, the use of Information and CommunicationTechnologies and contracting farming could be contributing to the poor show of SMEs inforward linkages. The rural functions in urban SMEs were found to be real and instrumental inentrepreneurship development. They were not only vital in business survival in lowseasons but were also found have positive correlations with large capital base, highmonthly turnover, increased access to loan facilities, and large size of the enterprise.Previous studies have shown that the rural-Urban trade to be more than urban-Ruraltrade. However, the current study shows the latter is almost three times more. Theresults could be said to differ in case where the point of focus is the small trader in thesmall town as opposed to a general urban-Rural trade approach. Also the nature of thefarmers markets could determine the flow pattern between urban and rural supplies.Karatina and Sagana markets behaved more of international markets, where most of thetraded goods and supplies were not from the local catchments. This meant ruralpopulace depended on the towns not only for manufactured goods and professionalservices but also for agricultural produce

The thesis approachs the city of São Luis of Maranhão in the end nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Analyzes aspects of the imaginarium about the town located on an island and that see itself integrated into the mainland, the country and Europe. It discusses the prospect of American civilization from the thought of Rodó, Fecundo, Manoel Bonfim, Leopoldo Zea and the way the residents of São Luis sought recognition of the city as owner of civility. Analyzes how the people of São Luis – the “ludovicensis” - dealt with the marks of slavery like evidence of barbarism, and as the thought of the nineteenth century, should be eradicated. Approach the process that turned the popular manifestation “bumba meu boi” into a symbol of the culture of the city, before something barbaric, condemned the suburb of the island. It shows that preservation observed in the photo albums of the town was ???"fronts"??? , but safeguarded mansions of the nineteenth century and provided a new classification of São Luis as the fifth city in Brazil to receive the title of World Heritage Sites, a return, a new insert, a highlight among the cities. The analysis was performed from iconographic sources, maps, literature, and newspapers.

Abstract:
Starting with the study of the 1871 trial of the Algerian insurgency leaders judged in 1873 at the Constantine criminal court, this thesis reconstitutes the judicial saga of an uprising that some recognize as the greatest insurrectionary sequence Algeria ever knew in the nineteenth century. The analysis of the rich documentation exhumed from the Overseas Archives of Aix-en-Provence, the Bibliothèque Nationale de France (Paris) and the archives of the tribunal of Constantine could have reinstated the colonized society’s right to speak and to renew the understanding of the 1871 uprising, but it was without counting the complexity of the political challenges which transformed an insurrection trial into a theater, where the civil-military conflict had to be resolved. The first great civil trial of Algeria was going to transform a major insurrection into common law offenses justifying astonishing forms of sentences. In addressing issues related to the causes and actors of the insurgency, the present work Involved in the analysis of the social history of the nineteenth century Algerian elites and their characteristics, through their involvement in the uprising and the investigative questioning of various historical sources and anthropological materials. While the various historiographies attributed to the djouads’ noble elite or the rahmaniyya confraternity the authorship of the revolt, the present thesis endeavored to highlight the anti-colonist matrix of a popular insurrection

Abstract:
This article analyzes the issues of identity and social integration of Chinese youth in the Marche region. The focus on these two themes arises from the recent increase in the number of Chinese students in schools in this region. This change points to a need to study an unexplored phenomenon. In this regard, the intention of this contribution is, on the one hand, to observe the dynamics related to social integration of these young people and to understand how they navigate their multiple identities, and, on the other hand, to provide guidance for future research as well as useful tools to create a welcoming and inclusive environment for them to live in. Following a review of the literature, this article analyzes research results regarding data collected from 198 young people and 21 teachers, and concludes with insights into the identity and social integration problems confronting Chinese youth in the region.

Abstract:
The paper focuses on the issue of the impact of the Fascist regime’s own language on the activity of the administrative judge. After recalling the problem of the context in which the language of the administrative judge is framed, the investigation highlights some possible “symptoms” of a “sensibility” to be assessed on the level of stylistic and expressive formulas. If, in some cases, this language has been the subject of a particular criticism and attack, in others cases it is possible to highlight how a certain assonance emerges indirectly with the typical speech of the regime. In this perspective, it can be recognized that the linguistic “charm” of the regime, while not affecting the independence of judgment of the administrative judge, had a certain impact on the style of some decisions of the Italian Council of State. An analysis conducted on some paradigmatic cases is able to identify, with regard to a part of the jurisprudence developed after the Thirties, a real “climax” on the linguistic and expressive level.

Abstract:
Sea surface waves had been observed remotely by using a continuous wave (CW) X-band microwave Doppler radar at the off Hitatsuka of Sagami-bay in Japan. A new algorithm was applied to retrieve sea surface elevation from radar output Doppler signals. The sea surface waves observed by the microwave Doppler radar had been compared with the waves measured by a supersonic wave height meter. There were good correlations in both the wave height and the wave period between the waves observed by the microwave Doppler radar and that measured by a supersonic wave height meter. The correlation of wave heights was better than that of wave periods. The microwave irradiation width on sea surface does a role of space filter. It seems that the filtering effect is a kind of aliasing, the energy of short wavelength waves moves to low wave number region. The algorithm to retrieve a sea surface elevation is described by the relation of the water surface elevation and the orbital velocity of water particle on water surface that generated by water surface waves. A linear superposition method has been used to retrieve sea surface elevation. No empirical parameters are used in the algorithm, because the water surface elevation can be obtained from the water particle velocity on water surface by using the mathematical relation of the water surface elevation and the orbital motion of water particle. Water particle motion on sea surface is affected by sea surface wind, currents, and sea surface waves. Water particle motion generated by sea surface waves can be separated by the difference of the fluctuation scale of each physical process.

Abstract:
For long-wavelength (1.3- and 1.5-μm) high-bitrate (>400-Mbit/s) lightwave systems the highest receiver sensitivities have been achieved with III–V compound avalanche photodiodes with separate absorption and multiplication regions (SAM-APDs). Initial APDs of this type exhibited poor frequency response owing to charge accumulation at the heterojunction interfaces. A significant improvement in the bandwidth was achieved by introducing a transition region between the multiplication and absorption layers (SAGM-APD). Early SAGM-APDs exhibited bandwidths in the 1–3-GHz range and gain-bandwidth products as high as 18 GHz. Recently, the progression of new lightwave systems to higher and higher bit rates has stimulated efforts to further increase the bandwidth of these SAGM-APDs.

Abstract:
Previously we reported on the pulse1 and frequency response2 of InP/InGaAsP/InGaAs avalanche photodiodes with separate absorption, grading, and multiplication regions (SAGM-APD). In this paper we describe several modifications we have made to the device structure, shown schematically in Fig. 1, to achieve significant improvement in both the frequency and pulse response. The changes include (1) reduction of the total depletion width to decrease the transit time of the free carriers, (2) use of low-resistance substrates to reduce the RC time constant, (3) introduction of an additional transition layer to eliminate effectively hole trapping at the heterojunction interfaces, and (4) increasing the carrier concentration in the multiplication region to reduce avalanche buildup time.
