The main objectives of this study were: (1) to develop a method of accurately and consistently counting daily increments; (2) to use the increments in otoliths counts to estimate age of the individuals; (3) to back-calculate hatch-dates to identify cohorts, and, (4) to analyze growth and mortality of sardine larvae and juveniles in the Southern Benguela region during early 2001.

Full textSpawning habitats of sardine and anchovy in eastern boundary systems are characterized in an attempt to understand the fluctuations observed in their abundance. These species have developed mechanisms that enable them to survive in these turbulent conditions. Spawning habitats were characterized by investigating the relationships between egg abundance and environmental data collected through two different survey programmes: SW APEL surveys (1978 -1985) and Nansen surveys (1999 - 2004). Single factor quotient techniques were used to define the selection of environmental conditions by these species for spawning.

Full textAbstract: Small and Micro-Enterprises (SMEs) are known to form significant nodes inrural-Urban linkages. Consequently, these SMEs serve as strong nodes which link thesurrounding rural areas to Local, National and Regional Markets through forward andbackward linkages. By strengthening and opening up opportunities for SMEs ‘virtuous’circles of rural-Urban economic linkages are created. The study of the rural-Urban linkages activities is still in development. This thesistherefore seeks to add to the literature by generating and documenting information onthe role of SMEs in small towns in rural-Urban linkages. Kenya is an agricultural-Ledeconomy, hence the need to focus on small mountainous towns. The towns aresurrounded by rich agricultural areas and are highly populated, making them busy hubsof mobility and exchange. Therefore, Mt. Kenya region is the chosen area of study withSMEs in Sagana and Karatina towns chosen as centres representing small towns.Based on the study results, SMEs were found to play an relatively small role in forwardlinkages. Only 12% of goods and services coming to the small towns from the ruralareas were forwarded by the SMEs, and only 25% of these goods found their way toother markets. The study established that some factors such as to the marketing chaincreated by the Famers Sacco’s, the use of Information and CommunicationTechnologies and contracting farming could be contributing to the poor show of SMEs inforward linkages. The rural functions in urban SMEs were found to be real and instrumental inentrepreneurship development. They were not only vital in business survival in lowseasons but were also found have positive correlations with large capital base, highmonthly turnover, increased access to loan facilities, and large size of the enterprise.Previous studies have shown that the rural-Urban trade to be more than urban-Ruraltrade. However, the current study shows the latter is almost three times more. Theresults could be said to differ in case where the point of focus is the small trader in thesmall town as opposed to a general urban-Rural trade approach. Also the nature of thefarmers markets could determine the flow pattern between urban and rural supplies.Karatina and Sagana markets behaved more of international markets, where most of thetraded goods and supplies were not from the local catchments. This meant ruralpopulace depended on the towns not only for manufactured goods and professionalservices but also for agricultural produce

The thesis approachs the city of São Luis of Maranhão in the end nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Analyzes aspects of the imaginarium about the town located on an island and that see itself integrated into the mainland, the country and Europe. It discusses the prospect of American civilization from the thought of Rodó, Fecundo, Manoel Bonfim, Leopoldo Zea and the way the residents of São Luis sought recognition of the city as owner of civility. Analyzes how the people of São Luis – the “ludovicensis” - dealt with the marks of slavery like evidence of barbarism, and as the thought of the nineteenth century, should be eradicated. Approach the process that turned the popular manifestation “bumba meu boi” into a symbol of the culture of the city, before something barbaric, condemned the suburb of the island. It shows that preservation observed in the photo albums of the town was ???"fronts"??? , but safeguarded mansions of the nineteenth century and provided a new classification of São Luis as the fifth city in Brazil to receive the title of World Heritage Sites, a return, a new insert, a highlight among the cities. The analysis was performed from iconographic sources, maps, literature, and newspapers.

Full textStarting with the study of the 1871 trial of the Algerian insurgency leaders judged in 1873 at the Constantine criminal court, this thesis reconstitutes the judicial saga of an uprising that some recognize as the greatest insurrectionary sequence Algeria ever knew in the nineteenth century. The analysis of the rich documentation exhumed from the Overseas Archives of Aix-en-Provence, the Bibliothèque Nationale de France (Paris) and the archives of the tribunal of Constantine could have reinstated the colonized society’s right to speak and to renew the understanding of the 1871 uprising, but it was without counting the complexity of the political challenges which transformed an insurrection trial into a theater, where the civil-military conflict had to be resolved. The first great civil trial of Algeria was going to transform a major insurrection into common law offenses justifying astonishing forms of sentences. In addressing issues related to the causes and actors of the insurgency, the present work Involved in the analysis of the social history of the nineteenth century Algerian elites and their characteristics, through their involvement in the uprising and the investigative questioning of various historical sources and anthropological materials. While the various historiographies attributed to the djouads’ noble elite or the rahmaniyya confraternity the authorship of the revolt, the present thesis endeavored to highlight the anti-colonist matrix of a popular insurrection
