Abstract:
Results from several studies are presented which detail explorations of the physical and spectral properties of low luminosity active galactic nuclei. An initial Sagittarius A* general relativistic magnetohydrodynamic simulation and Monte Carlo radiation transport model suggests accretion rate changes as the dominant flaring method. A similar study on M87 introduces new methods to the Monte Carlo model for increased consistency in highly energetic sources. Again, accretion rate variation seems most appropriate to explain spectral transients. To more closely resolve the methods of particle

Zhang, Shuo. "Investigating the Physics of Hard X-ray Outbursts from the Galactic Center Supermassive Black Hole Sagittarius A*." Thesis, 2016. https://doi.org/10.7916/D8H1326P.

Abstract:
The Galactic center supermassive black hole (SMBH) Sagittarius A* (Sgr A*) is the closest such object and thus is an ideal target for investigation of galactic nuclei and their activity cycles. Its remarkable underluminous X-ray state is punctuated by outbursts on different time and energy scales. This thesis presents a study of past, current and possible future X-ray outburst activities from Sgr A*, using the hard X-ray telescope NuSTAR. Indication of substantial past Sgr A* activity, similar to that observed in low-luminosity active Galactic nuclei, has come from the Galactic center molecula

"Genetic analysis of native and introduced populations of the aquatic weed Sagittaria platyphylla – implications for biological control in Australia and South Africa." 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/10962/76991.

Abstract:
Sagittaria platyphylla (Engelm.) J.G. Sm. (Alismataceae) is an emergent aquatic plant native to southern USA. Imported into Australia and South Africa as an ornamental and aquarium plant, the species is now a serious invader of shallow freshwater wetlands, slow-flowing rivers, irrigation channels, drains and along the margins of lakes and reservoirs. As a first step towards initiating a classical biological control program, a population genetic study was conducted to determine the prospects of finding compatible biological control agents and to refine the search for natural enemies to source p

Chutter, Ashley. "Elemental abundance investigation of two candidate extragalactic globular clusters (NGC 5024, NGC 5466)." Thesis, 2008. http://hdl.handle.net/1828/1355.

Abstract:
High resolution spectra have been analyzed for two and three stars respectively in the candidate extragalactic globular clusters, NGC 5024 and NGC 5466, with the High-Resolution Spectrograph on the 9.2 m Hobby-Eberly Telescope. The goal of this investigation is to evaluate the proposed extragalactic origins of these two globular clusters. Evidence of a tidal tail in NGC 5466 (Belokurov et al., 2006) and the association of NGC 5024 with the Sagittarius stream (Martinez-Delgado et al., 2004) targeted the clusters as likely remnants of recent accretion events and thus potentially of extragalact
